my biggest complaint with the movies is similar to your last point, i hated how they diminished the impact of the mutts in the very end of the first hunger games. i still remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when i first read how the mutt dogs looked like the dead tributes, how they HAD THEIR EYES and s l o w l y ripped Cato to shreds. literally horrifying. and then the movies were just bad CGI lol

How are people saying Collins miswrote the third book by making katniss a bit bipolar? She had underlying grief about her dad, an enormous weight on her shoulders by protecting her family since she was eleven, she’d gone through the hunger games, TWICE, and she was worried about Peeta. Miswriting would be to make her normal

Contradiction: I think Jennifer Lawrence was the best possible actress to play Katniss. Suzanne Collins and director Gary Ross both saw her audition for the role and were immediately sure that Jennifer is the perfect actress to play Katniss because of her talent and personality. Ross described Jennifer's talent as: "Her audition blew me away. She brought me to tears. When Michael Jordan walks into your room and shows you what he can do with a basket ball, you know what kind of talent is on front of you. That was what Jennifer did to me. You find such talent just once in a generation." Collins said about Jennifer: "She is the perfect cast as Katniss. Although she is taller, older and better fed than the character in the book, Jennifer has a fire inside her that Katniss has. Katniss is a girl that inspires a nation to do a revolution and you have to pick an actress with a personality so strong that the audience thinks: Yes, this person could inspire a revolution."

I totally agree with you. Except about the part you didn´t like Jennifer, cause I love her as Katniss, but that´s okay. I also think that mockingjay is a amazing book, not the most pleasant reading experience BUT IT´S BECAUSE IT´S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PLEASANT TO READ, it had to disturbing, difficult and harrowing. Katniss´s mind was broken and so her narrative had to be told that way. Prim also had to died, and of course it was devastating to see that, but it completed a full circle (it all started with her and ended with her as well in some ways) and it contributed to reaffirm the message that in a conflict not all the good ones are going to make it and the bad ones are going to die. The twist with coin just being as bad as snow it´s clever and realistic too. I remember reading and being so shocked about the idea of a symbolic hunger games, and only reading it older I fully understand the meaning behind that moment. And, the last but not least, I absolutely love katniss and peeta relationship and the way it wrapped it up in the end. I can´t deny that I was a little hesitant to watch this video afraid that I could hear some negative comments about their romance ... ( I respect that of course, it´s just that their relationship means so much to me that I was a litthe consider about it ). I totally don´t think that this story is about the romance at all, but I just think it´s so beautiful the subtle and intricate ways that it´s developed throughout the books. The strong bond that they create because of the games and the trauma and the ways they both represent hope, safe and strength for one another it´s really sensitive and fits perfectly in the story. And also the fact that katniss chose peeta ( I don´t like to use that word, like he was something to be picked, and actually she had already "chosen" him way before the end, but let´s use to shorten my thought) reassures the message the author was trying to convey that we all should be anti war and spread hope and rebirth and instead of fire and destruction .This comment went on way too long that I predicted but I also love being able to talk more about the hunger games, that it´s also my absolute favorite series.

Out of the two I prefer Peeta. Gale was just too into his own interests. Agree about mockingjay. I enjoyed the movies but they are not the greatest adaptations. The mockingjay pin thing was so ridiculous. Catching Fire had a good atmosphere. Great filming. But I hate all they cut out. All her interactions with Cinna. Anything about Haymitches games ect. I think it was summed up perfectly in the books why Peeta was the better choice for Katniss. Gale was too much like herself, too much fire and anger within her and that she didn't need more of that. What she needed to survive was Peeta, someone who in a way is her opposite. Someone who is gentle and calm and who can naturally provide reassurance. Peeta's so damn loyal that he was driven into madness using images of the person he loves, only for him to find his way out of the madness against the odds and back to Katniss. Also liked Haymitch's line of "You could live a hundred lifetimes and never deserve that boy" which I think sums it up perfectly.

We had "federative" in name for a while, before breaking it off. Now we are both republics. If by tomorrow somebody pulled a coup and turned our countries into dictatorship, we would still be republics, just not democracies anymore.

I just finished reading TBOSBAS and I loved it, it had so much to say! I then watched your reaction to the book after I finished and had very similar thoughts about the book! It was so refreshing to find this video after watching your TBOSBAS video, because you are so spot on yet again! As a fellow Hunger Games fan, I really really appreciate and love your videos! Many people miss what Suzanne is actually writing about, and why she is writing about what she is. To me, Suzanne's work is very reminiscent of George Orwell's work (and rightfully so, Collins' has gone on to say Orwell was and continues to be a huge source of inspiration for her work), in the sense that, yes it is fiction, however it is more speculative fiction then anything else. Especially for TBOSBAS! Like another one of my favorites, The Handmaids Tale by Margret Atwood, so much of Hunger Games is rooted in history. Many plot points and many character arc's are rooted in what has already happened in the world somewhere and that is what makes the books so genius. War is real. War is terrible for everyone. In war, nobody wins. There are survivors, sure but there are never any winners, emotionally at least. That is the main message I took away from the books. They are an anti-war statement. They are social commentaries about what we have already and continue to go through as a society. Our government does not care about our well being and do not actually believe in the ideology, government officials often preach about and they never have.
The Hunger Games provides an out look on what we are going through right now. We are already living in Panem. Take Black Lives Matter for instance. Black people who have been oppressed and tortured and murdered by white people-in any societal practice-, are saying, ENOUGH! Violence cannot happen anymore. Violence is a cycle. Similar to a game.

@@TheGeekApprentice The facts? The facts of what? The fact is, The Hunger Games (and most dystopian fiction) DOES provide a third party outlook on how current day America parallels ideology that is in the novels. Like I mentioned above, this goes for most dystopian fiction bc to write a dystopia, you have to ground your work in reality/history people are familiar with.
As far as Black Lives Matter is concerned, the idea of changing a system to make it fair and equal is the entire plot of the novels. While I recognize, the BLM movement is not fiction and not some dystopian tale, the BLM movement I think is very relevant for discussing why Collins' wrote the novels.

I understand that the pin being a symbol of 'home' is much more meaningful and prevalent in the books because of its history.
But I just don't see it's importance coming from someone who isn't even very close to Katniss. Why would she care who's it was first.
I also like the theory that either Lucy Gray or her little sister is actually Greasy Sae, now *that* would be meaningful.

I really like your takes! Also I agree so much about Peeta! Idk sometimes I wonder if some people prefer Gale because they think his actor is hotter, but Peeta is so much better for Katniss. Also Mockingjay is actually my favorite book because of how raw and realistic a portrayal it is of PTSD.
My only disagreements is that I like Jennifer Lawrence's performance, and that I don't think the movies should've been rated R. I understand if the books had been 100% accurately recreated as movies they would have been, but a lot of teens would not have been able to see the movies if they had been rated R And I think the story is so powerful and important and that making it accessible to teenagers is important. Also, I think that a movie can take violence just as seriously and have an equally powerful message without being explicit.

It's funny, I can't watch Jennifer Lawrence in anything else BUT the Hunger Games. Amend that, she hasn't been good in anything else. She's highly over-rated. But I thought she was cast well in the role and did a good job. I wasn't worried about the appearance difference so much b/c it's hard to portray starving people without actually starving them. I mean they did it with Peeta in Mocking Jay but he was just sitting there so CGI was easier to tackle when it came to making him look worse for wear. But yeah, totally agree about the pin and the way the first movie ended. Anyone who didn't read the book wouldn't understand Peeta's anger toward Katniss when the movie Catching Fire started. It seemed like it came out of nowhere b/c he didn't get that revelation of Katniss' real feeling towards him.

Thank you, I enjoyed this video. It does take some courage to put your unpopular opinions out there. I have many myself. I do agree with you about the first film. Although the director did a great job in giving the audience a pretty good sensation of what it would have felt like to physically be in the hunger games (wonderful job of that), there was so much of the story that was missed. I did not read the books before seeing the first film so I’m with you. I was often confused and knew I really didn’t know what was happening. The relationship between Katniss and Peeta went right over my head at that time. Peeta came off as a player and not very sincere at all...I thought they really needed more info there...including some indication at the end that he was not faking his feelings for Katniss and that it all left him very broken in the end. Never got that before the books. But I do disagree that Jennifer Lawrence was not a good fit for the role. I understand that physically, you are correct...she is not that character...but I believe she did portray Katniss very well...I believed it. But, that’s ok. I get what you are saying. Many things you mentioned didn’t really bother me much, like using the correct terms or if Katniss still had her scar on her arm, but I understand your frustration. :)

Totally agree, that would have been really simple and totally true to the source material. Maybe even a line somewhere, Prim saying "I saw your friend Madge today"...obviously in a suitable context, but just something!! The way she got the pin in the movie just takes all the meaning and impact our of it completely.

I agreed with all these unpopular opinions except for the one about Jennifer Lawrence. I think she was the perfect fit for Katniss and Jennifer Lawrences personality to me seems very real. She also just seems to be being herself and I think that she has a good personality.

  • @pinheadarmy2805

I wouldn't say that the way Katniss received the pin in the movie was "uninspiring, boring and stupid". Clearly, they didn't have enough time in the film to go into Marge's story (sad but understandable) so, they eliminated her character, which I think was the right call. However, the fact that in the movie Katniss receives the pin from Greasy Sae is a nice touch. We know that everyone in the Seam is poor, so if you ask yourself why Greasy Sae tells Katniss to simply keep the pin for free, the answer is unexpectedly touching and inspiring - it's the Reaping day, and the elderly lady sympathizes with Katniss, a teen, who may be reaped that very day. So maybe in the movies a pin started being "a lucky charm for protection" even before Katniss gave it to Prim. Sure it's not as in depth and complex as in the books, but also quite sweet in it's own right :)

I haven’t watched the full the thing but according to so,e comments you mention something about katniss amd peetas relationship. In my opinion, peeta was perfect for katniss amd here why. She never interacts with any other males that don’t die at the end or just isn’t her age. Finnick dies, and all the othee tributes from the 74th hunger games and quarter quell either hate her or are too old.
Another thing is gale only liked the strong katniss. He liked katniss when she was willing to be fearless and bold. He liked the katniss that always tried to protect others. But when katniss was either scared or wanted the feeling of comfort, gale always wasn’t here for her. Especially after her games, gale would never know how to comfort her and how to cope with her trauma.
Peeta on the other hand loved evry singke katniss. He like the strong, smart, tired, happy, scared, fearless, injured, traumatized, evry katniss. He also was in the area with her causing them both to be able to help each other when they get flashbacks. Peeta also helped katniss character develope. Katniss realizes that her being the one scared and needing comfort is ok amd being sad, or a angry he,led her grow as a character. She also found something she loved that’s as the her family and was happy for once after the games

I agree with everything you said except for the casting of Katniss, I think Jennifer was a good choice to play Katniss Everdeen but oh well. And I was also certainly irritated and confused with the fact that they didn't include Madge in the movies, it took away all (well most) origin and dept to the mocking jay pin which importantly plays a huge part of the whole story and rebellion. But also a rated R is a bit of a over exaggeration because I personally read the books in elementary school (and all of my childhood friends) and the book was way more gruesome than the movies as you said. But even if they had made it equally gory I still don't think it should be marked as R-rated.

I don’t agree with the films not being bloody enough. For starters, in the first book katniss barely describes the blood bath and if anything were getting more gore like throat slittings and stuff. Also glimmers death was pretty spot on and disturbing like u couldn’t do that better. In catching fire, she barely sees any deaths apart from a few careers which are fine. Apart from the last book which was a bit more bloody, the films had more gore.

You have so much of a deeper understanding than most people care to make and it is so refreshing. Also I would've loved for them to make it gory enough for an R rating. Especially in Mockingjay when they're blowing up kids and the capitol citizens are getting hurt with the rebels. It really shows how apathetic some of the characters are and why some decisions were made. Always look forward to your opinion about THG!! Also where did you get the vest thing?

The newest book is by far (IMO) the best book in the series. The movie adaptation though will be not as good because of Hollywood. Isabella fuhrmam who plays clove in the first movie actually auditioned to play katniss but I’m glad she got clove instead of katniss. Event though katniss was a teenager, just like Isabella is, amd the description is pretty much Isabelle, we have to rember that katniss also has a little sister. Willow shields plays prim amd willow has always looked mature for her age in my opinion. I also think that because katniss had to take the role of being a mother, she matured quickly for, lack of sleep, stress, anxiety, amd because the death of her father and her mothers depression. Jennifer Lawrence, looks young for her age but also isn’t immature but at the same time also resembles katniss

I remember first watching the first HG film, I was so, so anxious about the Glimmer scene like I was not ready to see it, I covered my eyes at that part (I was like 12 lol) so upon rewatching it, I was kinda relieved that it wasn't as bad as the books. But I get it, it lowers the stakes of the films immensely.

Interesting comments. i agree with a couple of them. First, how Katniss got the pin. My impression was that the director simply didn't want to introduce even more characters and complexity to the story. Second, although I am a Jennifer Lawrence fan, I thought she was simply too old for the part. Other than Shailene Woodley, I don't know who else had enough acting credentials to do the part. Maybe the young actress who was Clove?

To be fair, "republic" and "democracy" aren't necessarily mutually exclusive terms; a republic is a state in which the power is (at least in theory) held by the people and entrusted to a group of representatives, while a democracy is a nation which is governed (either directly or indirectly) by popular vote. A pure democracy (where everyone votes on every decision) wouldn't work on a continental scale, and a republic without democratic elections would quickly cease to represent the people. It's clear from Plutarch's conversation that he is referring to a republic of democratically elected representatives, with the idea that the power ultimately rests in the hands of the people. Personally, I think the use of the word "democracy" in the last film (which, full disclosure, I still haven't seen) is less the result of an agenda than the fact that most people see the terms "democracy" and "republic" as essentially interchangeable.

I find it so interesting that you didn't like Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. If anything, I would have thought her too old looking - if there was anything bad to say about her. But I can respect your opinion. Side note: We probably differ on a lot of things, but I LOVE your reviews, I have been here watching for the past 4 hours, a lot of your Hunger Games reviews (as well as the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) - and I think you are so articulate and spot on to the themes and issues within. Anyhow, I guess, I want you to know, you still have a fan of yours that absolutely loves J.Law - I am literally a lush and seeing her frivolous and drunk, for the most part, all of the time outside of film is relaxing and I feel like I just know her even though I don't lol. I don't know if that makes sense! Anyway --- Moving on! I also find it intriguing how you use the same themes and issues within the books and the movies to platform your opinions on how maintstream media presents their content. While I agree, there are many news shows that can't seem to tell you the news without giving an opinion, I think it's important that we showcase those opinions - AS NEWS - in a way - so that we see other people reacting to the news in the same ways we might, and rightly so, in your defense, a news channel should also vary the people they have relaying the news AND their opinions on the said content.
P.S. I really disliked how the first film screwed up Buttercup, and now that I have finally shown the series to my 8 year old daughter - while I watched it I got upset about it - as well as the mocking jay pin... GRRRR!!! It meant so much more than "Oh, you like this pin girl? Have it, you'll probably die soon."
Much love though, a new fan of yours,

Arrived here from your videos about the new book, and girl you got yourself a new fan! Loved your review of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and totally resonate with your unpopular opinions here (not so unpopular after all hahah, but I'm a radical myself). All except for one point: I love Jeniffer Lawrence as an actor, but I agree with your assessment that she wouldn't have been my first choice to play Katniss. Yes she's a talented actress and all, but in my opinion she did not embody the energy and persona that I imagined of Katniss in the books.
Another interesting point to note, is that I've always loved Mockingjay without really knowing why. Your mention of the political tones and the deeper meaning within the book made me realise why :D And I can't help but rewatch your videos, because you talk about themes in the book that are often overlooked, and are so articulate in presenting these ideas to us.
Kudos on the great content, looking forward to more. Subscribed!

i think jennifer lawrence was the best actress cast out of all the others that could have had the role, what i dislike so much is the whitewashing they did with her character, only call casting white women to play her, when she is blatantly described with olive skin in the book
and i think you CAN actually watch only the movies and understand whats going on fully. the first movie especially as flawed as it is is great with its subtle world building and by catching fire you can feel the oppression and the rest is self explanatory to anyone with a brain. the books just add that extra SPICE and it does make the story better
