The age thing is pretty much a modern limitation. Historically there were lots of children crowned as the official ruler, but usually with their mother actually running things as Queen Regent until they were old enough to actually do the job. Zelda definitely doesn't have the problem of being too young or uneducated to take on the role.

This is a really interesting question! I like the conclusion, that all Zelda's eventually become queens.

I was thinking if the Kingdom of Hyrule didn't exist anymore because it was destroyed by The Calamity, the monarchy was destroyed as well. But then Zelda wouldn't be a princess either.

I think because she’s just waiting for the kingdom to be fixed then she’ll become queen, because everyone still calls her princess

My guess would be that she needs to be married in order to be made queen. Although, after the calamity caused the kingdom to go from being united to separate city-states, it could be Zelda wanted to rebuild connections with the people of Hyrule before re-establishing the central government.

    She's sometimes Princess Regent
The Coronation isn't when you become King/Queen - that's just when you take your vows of service - you're the ruler in the next second from the death of the previous monarch.

Zelda actually did love Link. If you get all of Kass' shrines, he'll be standing near the shrine in Rito village and tell the story of his teacher, where he said that she only had eyes for her knight (Link). Plus also in BOTW, if you get the last memory, her power only ever activates when Link is on the verge of death to protect him.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean they marry imo. Link may not feel the same way. :)

@@TheGeekApprentice Fair enough, although TOTK's story made it seem like they were plenty close (Like Zelda living in his Hateno home, having two sets of plates on the table there, and having Link's headband in a treasure chest in her hidey hole behind that house).

    • @TheGeekApprentice

@@Yukielia Oh they're definitely close! I just don't think Link feels the same. He has a duty, that's all. I don't see Zelda living in that home as "living together." As Link just as easily could've given his home to her and he stays elsewhere. Two plates could be for looks/visitors :) I know many want them to be a couple, but to me there's not enough evidence of it going both ways.
However, I 100% understand why many see them as eventually being a couple :)

A little background.. There are two types of queen's... a Queen Consort and a Queen Regnant.
Queen Consorts - they marry a king and have no real power to rule and govern. Once the King passes so to does the Queens Place on the throne - she becomes a dowager.
Queen Regnant - this is a Queen who rules in her own right - think about the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Now.... to the game.... Zelda would be ruling Hyule in her own right, and wouldn't need to be married to take the crown (Queen Victoria married after becoming Queen). I would like to think it is a Matriarchal Monarchy (the woman is the power) and the husband is only "King" in name only.
Rhoam had the power after his wife's death because Zelda was so young and needed to focus on awakening her power

This is just an idea and not necessarily my perspective on why she isn't the Queen yet, but, perhaps it could be that there is no need for her to assume the title of Queen because her position as the ruler of Hyrule is respected by all, as was the Kings, her fathers. If no one(excluding Ganondorf) is contesting her right to rule, then being crowned the Queen might not be necessary in order for her to fulfill her role as the leader of Hyrule. I found the quote below on reddit in a post asking "Why wasnt the husband of Queen Elizabeth II a king?" which is where I'm getting this idea from, this was one person's response:
"It’s really a very interesting question. The titles are not completely symmetrical with regard to the genders, and there is a subtle kind of sexism at work.
The most direct answer is this: Because if there were both a King and Queen, the King would automatically be assumed to be more important and powerful.
Therefore, Queen Elizabeth’s husband, Phillip, is “merely” a Prince and a Duke, thereby assuring that he is NOT more important than her.
You also need to understand that a monarchy is just what the word implies: RULE BY ONE. Dual monarchies (joint rule by both a King and Queen) have happened, but they are the exceptions, not the rule.
Currently, Queen Elizabeth II is the monarch. Her husband, Phillip is merely her consort. Although the Queen’s powers are largely symbolic, they still matter."
If the same symbolic sort of power the Hylian Royal family has over Hyrule can be compared to the Royal Family of the UK; mainly there as a figurehead, a representative of the people and a symbol of the unity of Hyules different races of people, to give the final word on the bigger problems the realm might face, like war. If that were the case then Zelda might be comfortable with being Princess as her people already look to her to fill the role her father had been previously fulfilling without questioning her right to do so.
Phew, that was a lot, sorry about that, but I find this subject really interesting and have thought about it a lot over the years as well lol

the real reason is branding- the zelda series isn't likely to ever have a queen zelda because the games have always featured her as "princess." she can't become queen or be referred to as such when the brand has always positioned her as princess. it's the same reason you'll never see a queen peach in the mario games.

We need a geme with Zelda being the Queen and link being and adult in his 40's or 50's. It would be awesome seeing Link and Zelda as mentors of a new generation of heroes. But we won't be getting that for sure... :(

That would be a good setup for a harder game with Link as a veteran warrior instead of a scrappy youth.

5 minutes in, and it makes me want a BOTW3 to see if she'll have make amends with another kingdom through marriage - though that story concept is very unlike Zelda stories, so I'm thinking more along the lines of her needing to "win back" her people in a BOTW3, that sounds a little more likely than a marriage drama story.
Now done with video - I always thought the coronation process would be after BOTW, but you've brought up really good points about there needing to be a "religious figure of Hylia" as well as possibly being married already. I'll have to check out the royal bloodline theory you made, because my original theory before TOTK came out was that - Zelda's Zonai lineage came through her mother, and that her father was the Hylian one. (My Zelda's Mother Ch 4 theory video) But now after TOTK, Zonai and royal Hylian bloodlines seem to be intertwined together since Rauru and Sonia. The game even considering those bloodlines one in the same? Even though much people and possibly Nintendo don't think a BOTW3 is "necessary," it would be really cool to see some story tie-ins with an Age of Calamity sequel. Nonetheless, I'm glad to have been educated on the coronation process.

There’s still a lot to do, so a coronation isn’t high on Zelda’s list of things to do. She will probably be coronated when she gets married (to Link) so everyone has to get together once.

@kit76149 She’s very close to him, yes. :) That’s about it. Also, it could be not reciprocated. And no, they don’t live together in that sense, I don’t believe.
