    I fist read it when I was about 13 (I'm 20 now). It was definitely extremely graphic, but it is still one of the best series I've ever read. I don't regret reading it at all when I was that young, and now, I have come to appreciate its complexities even more. I also relate to not liking Katniss at first, mainly because -- now that I am older -- I discovered that she reminds me too much of myself.

    The very first time I read the trilogy I already knew that it wasn't a live story. It's a lesson it's trying to teach us about the CONSEQUENCES OF WAR. I was only 15 when I read it and I knew that its about reality, and that's why I LOVE the series so much bc it's realistic even though it's a fictional story

      And when I first got the novels for my birthday when I was around 7 I was in my room reading them and I automatically widened my eyes at some points in the story like Peeta’s brainwashing and then Prim’s death and then when I found out Katniss was fake Pregnant in Catching Fire I was immediately into the story and needless to say I was super shocked and I thought that Katniss and Peeta would die but of course since their was a 3rd book I immediately picked the 3rd book after I finished the 2nd book

      I've read it every year since I was 17 and learn/discover something new each time. So, I see no harm in reading it again at 15. :) You'll find as you grow, mature, and evolve throughout your life that your experience of the story will change with you. It could be cool to read it now at 15, then again at 20 and have two very different perspectives. :D

      The more you know about the history of various countries, the more you will cherish the Hunger Games books and movies, because every little aspect of the politics of the trilogy already happened in some country. The trilogy is a summary of several thousand years of human history and reminds us to *not* repeat the same mistakes again.

    I understand you completely omg, I first read the books in 2012 when I’d just turned 14, about a month before the first movie came out. And my life changed forever after that, even though they were books I would usually never ever have picked up at that time in my life but pretty much all I focused on was how much I adored Everlark. Which as a 22 year old now it’s embarrassing for me to admit, almost too lmao. But also Katniss’s personality hit me so hard as I see a lot of my own traits in her, to this day.
    I definitely don’t remember taking much in as I was so young and I couldn’t fathom something so graphic.
    But again now in 2020 at 22 and especially after reading The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes also, I find them very difficult to read/watch cause they’re so violent and I’ve had to put the books aside when reading for a little while sometimes cause they’re so much at once because my god, they are LITERAL CHILDREN. Now they make me 100 times more emotional too but for different reasons.
    Suzanne Collins is a bloody exemplary author. It’s crazy how much I understand about the reality of it now I’ve matured so much over time and life experiences and to view them without an obsessive teenage fandom brain and without all the hype of the movies being released, if that makes sense. And how much I understand the other characters now, not just Katniss and how I understand how the other characters think and do things, rather than being like “ew all Gale does is get in the way” And after as you said, maturing with Katniss. (I’ll always have a piece of my heart that belongs with Everlark though, it just be like that. But again for totally different reasons. After delving deeper I now understand how they need each others personality elements and shared past to have that deep connection rather than viewing it like I was a member of the Capitol audience watching the ‘show’.)
    You’ve spoke my entire brain, pretty much! I love this video. I also wrote a novel comment, I’ve realised 😂

    • @Cat-oj5oj
      @Cat-oj5oj 4 года назад +1

      You just summarised my experience perfectly! I also read the books for the first time when I was 14, and am now 22. I'm rereading them for the first time since then and oh my god, the nuances my older brain is picking up on!! I also made my whole first read about Everlark - they're still my favourite fictional couple of all time, but I'll admit that 14 year old me did focus too much on the romance and some of the story's key messages were lost on me. What's funny is that now, I'm seeing characters in a whole new light, even Gale, whom I hated before but I still don't like. However, I empathise with him, Haymitch and Effie more as an older reader. I also now understand why I loved Everlark so much as a teen. It wasn't just that Peeta was a nice guy crushing on the girl next door. It's that when Katniss 'chooses' a guy, she's not choosing him but rather a set of ideals. War or peace. Fire or earth. Hate or love. God, I just love this series!

    • @Brittaanaay
      @Brittaanaay 4 года назад +3

      Catherine Taylor GIRL YES TO ALL OF THIS. And ofc everlark are just elite, no other fictional couple ever comes close to them or any male character even close to my love of Peeta. I love how you said that about Gale too like I surprised myself in parts by empathising with him when I used to hate the guy like especially when he first saw District 12 again in mockingjay after he’d tried to save everyone and get them out like that HURT.
      It’s genuinely like an entire new experience reading them now cause you notice so much and things hit my heart so so much harder that I’d never have really gave much thought 8 years ago. And omg I gotta stop talking about it cause once I start I ain’t gonna stop😂

    • @Cat-oj5oj
      @Cat-oj5oj 4 года назад +3

      @@Brittaanaay ahaha I feel the same, I could go on and on and on about this series - I've had to join the Hunger Games reddit page just so I can read and contribute to discussions 😂 And yes Everlark is the Elite™ YA pairing. The way their relationship develops slowly but surely and their personalities are so layered. I relate SO MUCH to Katniss's fear of romantic love, she literally lies to herself about feeling anything at all for Peeta even though the author tells you so clearly that she does care about him. Even after the CF Beach Kiss™, I noticed on reread that Katniss says she wakes up with a giddy feeling that's 'somehow connected to Peeta.'. Girl, that's called a crush lmaooo 😂 You have to read between the lines to understand Katniss. I've never felt as understood by anyone as I did her. 😭

I've read the series many times since but it's been a while (I'm 21 now) and this video REALLY made me want to reread them. The prequel was so moving to me and I thought it was because of my obsession with the series but now I'm thinking its because of my age! Can't wait to reread and see what else I learn from them.

    I first read the Hunger Games trilogy when I was 10 and I could totally relate to your 17 year old self (I re-read it a couple of times in the same year too), but I didn't fully understand the truth and messages behind the words, like your younger self, I loved the sweet and romantic moments, often squealing from the adorableness. But I didn't see through the darkness and corruption of the stories. I knew what the concept of the games were, the slaughtering of children, but I never viewed the books as the dark and gruesome tale that it truely was. Now I am 14 and I just recently re-read the books for the first time in 4 years and I now begin to realize and analyze the deeper meanings and can understand the dept and darkness of the books (especially the war).

    For every saying that Katniss was too "unlikeable" in the 3rd book, I think it's because she just went two death games and a literal war. I'm pretty sure that if you almost starved to death, had people trying to literally kill you, and witness your loved ones die, you'd be a little prickly too. Forget hormones, I think she's just got a case of 'I've just been through a war and my sister died'.

    I have to say that in this video I finally had an understanding of how old you are and I must say you look a lot younger than what you must be. Please don't take that as a negative in any way. I myself have been one of those people that have looked younger throughout my whole life and when you get to be my age (which is nigh away from 45), it will come in handy. My stepdaughter is now just reading The Hunger Games 1st book. She is mentally advanced for her age so yes, I am allowing her to read it at 11 years old. Also, I just discovered that there is a hunger games exhibit here in Las Vegas, Nevada where I live, down at one of the casinos!! I have begged my husband to take me in a couple weeks for my birthday. I'm just debating if I want to take my stepdaughter too since she has not seen the movies yet and is still only 3/4 of the way through the 1st book. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy your channel although I don't know anything about video games lol. Idk why but it just never bothered me its violence and dark themes and story. Probably because I just couldn’t relate to Katniss at all in terms of what she had to go through

    I’ve always thought the hunger games was a very brutal series. When it first came out my parents refused to let me read or watch it and I do understand why now that I’m older.
    I do believe your point and it is honestly quite obvious if you think about it. However I believe that a large reason that we don’t take this story as seriously as we should due to the movies. Don’t get me wrong, the movies were a fantastic adaptation but because they aged up the characters so much, it took away from the horror of the games. Jennifer Lawrence was 22 in 2012, although she was an amazing actor and played katniss very well, I think because they didn’t get 16 year olds to play 16 year olds and so on, it took away from the terror of the story because they all look like adults. Amanda Stenburg ( who played rue) was 16! She was playing a 12 year old. I do get they wanted experienced actors and no one was at fault but it think they made it seem a little less terrible

It sort of scarred me seeing those traumatic moments all play out and I haven't touched the books since. As much as I want to have as much fun with a series I treasured so much the way it happened with the Twilight renaissance, I just can't bring myself to revisit THG too much, it is very dark and the ending is very bittersweet.

      You could always try listening to the audio books. The narrators performances for audio books can really help you understand exactly what tones, emotions and meanings the author was trying to get across. The narrator for The Hunger Games is pretty good for what she's got to work with but is a little lacking in some characters voices, especially Peta's voice. She makes him sound sorta like he has a mental problem, as if he's kinda slow or something. In all, she does a good job though. I work completely alone at my job so I listen to a lot of audio books and discovered how amazing they are and how incredible some of the narrators are. It's like going on epic adventures in my head while I work lol

    Honestly my first true, (actually reading and watching the series rather than getting the basics from passing comments and stuff like that), exposure to the story of the Hunger Games was Mocking Jay part 1, when my middle school class somehow convinced our small Christian Academy to let us go see the movie because we were “reading” it in class.
    (I think I was 12-maybe 14....?..then....regardless it was in between that time frame.)
    After that I watched the previous films and then Mocking Jay part 2 when it came out.
    But I read the books in their entirety when on a family vacation in Georgia and boy did I love it.
    Though it was one of the few series I’ve read, where I remember that I felt so shaken up and honestly scared to some extent when I finished it.
    (It honestly reminded me of when I had previously read through the entire book of Revaluation in the Bible.....twice....back to back....because it was the topic of discussion and I was encouraged to read it and all.....)
    It was put together so well and I ended up loving the movies more despite all their flaws.
    Anyway......I like how realistic it is and that it doesn’t sauger coat anything.
    It was quite the story and one I still love.
    Also great video!
    👍

    I so agree with you! It was terrifyingly true as how evil the government can get with too more power over its peoole. That is far from fiction! Such an amazing series!

    Compared to the other YA dystopian books it inspired (i.e. Divergent and The Maze Runner), The Hunger Games has been standing the test of time rather well. :)

      I think if you liked them the first time you read them I truly think you would benefit from rereading them in a couple of years. I hated them the first time I read them when I was 12 but now as a 20 year old, rereading them for the first time is truly amazing. I'm so engulfed in the story and in how the world came to be this way. You will keep on missing things especially when you reread them in your teens but as you get older you will discover new things again and again. So don't worry about missing things. I missed a lot of it when I read them for the first time too.

    I read the full trilogy for my first time at 20 after being suggested to me by my at the time girlfriend. Now with Ballad and Snakes under my belt I do plan on reading the trilogy again to also put the information from Ballad into context. I just finished a rewatching of the films today.
    Want to get through Cursed though before that drops to Netflix.

I'm from a small community in the Appalachian foothills and now live in Kentucky, Middle School Mac was just happy and absolutely over the moon with the idea of a competent, tough Appalachian as the main character in a popular book when a lot of the time it's the exact opposite

    I definitely agree that the world of the hunger games is really not far off the world today - the nation of panem simply being a microcosm of global society as a whole. You can really start to understand this if you think of the whole of western europe/north america as being like the capitol - we all live relitavely priveliged lives never need to worry about not having enough to eat and just like the citizens of the capitol many ppls lives are consumed by silly materialistic consumerism like fashion trends ect. Poor nations like africa, the middle east , india and south east asia being like the districts - ppl in these countries live an almost slave like existence paid tiny amounts often to provide resources for the rich western countries all contributing to the consumerist lives we lead. Countries like china are almost exactly like panem - incredibly authoritarian government run by a single party that maintains a tight grip on power through intensive control of information and total surveillance of its citizens using facial recognition cameras almost everywhere that use AI algorithms to constantly monitor ppl movements.. ect .. china has become the cheap labour source of the world with the elite at the top basically getting rich off the backs of millions of ppl basically working in sweatshops and factories producing clothes and goods which can be sold to the west cheaply .. the big american companies that use china as a source of cheap labour sort of turn a blind eye to how the whole thing is managed as long as they can make money.. So yeh the world is like the hunger games world but the reason most ppl dont realise it is because they are already living in the capitol and not living in africa south america or the middle east.. the US even sends its army all over the world to these poorer countries (there are like hundreds of us army bases all round the world) under the pretext of the world needing its presence to maintaini 'peace'... sounds very similar to the idea of peacekeepers doesnt it...

    But seriously, I'm 12 years old, I've read Hunger Games, I mean it affected me but I'm sure that in few years if I read Hunger Games again, I will feel really amazed.
    I've also read the balladi of snakes and songbirds. It didn't really hit me, and now I get it why. But if I'll read it again in ten years, I really hope I can feel the book, the songs, the love.

      I watched the first movie, then read the first book, then watched the second and third movie, and then after a couple of years I decided to basically binge them over the course of two days. Now, 9 years after I read the first book, I'm finally reading all the books and annotating them and writing reviews for them. I'm halfway through the last book. For me it was just a matter of giving it more time, they skip over so much detail in the movies so just because you watched them first doesn't take anything away from the books in my opninion.

    If you allow me to be a nuisance one last time, my Christmas wish this year is that you blindly watch the Avatar animated series... From watching your videos I know it's perfect for you. I won't insist again, but if you ever do watch it you'll see why I think it's right up your alley, it's not what it looks like, and it's definitely not anime, it's a western cartoon, I know you'll love it. Geek Apprentice, you said at the end you’d never think the idea of the movies could come true and I’m wondering if you still think that same way? For me, I’d say I don’t think that they could “never” be a reality bc just like the capitol erased history that is slowly starting to happen in the world. Tearing down statues, removing parts of schools bc of “offensive” names, changing science to fit narratives. Sadly to me, things are only pointing in the direction of this dystopian world, and we need some serious rocking to get it turned around. Bc you said if we keep learning from our past which means learning from our mistakes. We aren’t allowed to do that anymore bc things like the horrors of the civil war and slavery will soon be forgotten as all the statues of figureheads from the war are being removed. We are nearing an age where generations will never know that there was once slavery and that brave men had to fight to end it. Maybe people will think of the idea of slavery and start it up again not knowing what devastation it caused in the past. It’s truly scary the amount of information we are throwing out the window
