I sang Downtown on the Epcot stage with Miss Petula many years ago. She saw me in the audience singing along with EVERY song. But when she finished her performance she hadn't sang my favorite which, of course, is Downtown. So I shouted out that she couldn't leave until she had! Then she invited me on stage to sing it with her! I will never ever ever forget that! What a thrill. Must tell you, we were both in our 60's! She was and will always be my favorite singer from the 1960's!!! (and the Beatles!)

I played this song for my father a few years before he passed away. It was a year after both of his parents had died. He never spoke of any fond memories of the two of them, at all. Having lived his life a product of divorce and institutionalized by bouncing in and out of reform schools and various correctional facilities up until age 21, my father never had anything much pleasant to say about his childhood. I was going through iTunes and came across this song (I liked it because of a Seinfeld episode). As the song played, I saw and heard my dad recount and relive a long forgotten memory, in the mid sixties, of a maybe 6 or 7 year old him cruising down with his mother and father all singing along to this song. He told me it was the one time he remembered them as a happy family, tears streaming down his face. This remains the most tender and beautiful moment I ever had with my father. Whenever I get down in the dumps, I listen to this song and remember my father, and how precious and fleeting "family" truly is. Thanks for listening.

Wow. Sounds eerily familiar except for us not singing along. Probably my earliest memory is riding in the back seat with my brother and sister with mom and dad in front and this song playing as we drove in downtown Northfield. Think I was about 4. Dad passed away about a year later. Still reminds me of that moment in the car whenever I hear the song.

Or maybe it's just because it's the first song that left an impression on me when I was 4 or 5. I can still picture where I was when I first heard it.

My young Mom and Dad, all the relatives - they encouraged me to sing for them. They are all gone now but that feeling lives on.......I went on to become a professional stage performer.......who’d would’ve thought!

Downtown was the best. There were no big suburb's or suburban shopping centers yet. Almost everyone lived in the city. The only place to find everything was at the big downtown department stores. I really miss those. 8 floors, every floor a different department. The elevators were run manually by real people who would announce what was on each floor or you could ask them for help. While waiting for the elevator, the doors had windows, you could see the counterweights side up and down. Most of the stores were within a couple of blocks that you could walk to. Bus routes covered every neighborhood. You just walked to the bus stop, took it downtown, and did your shopping. At Christmas time when my parents took myself and my brothers and sisters downtown it was like magic. Christmas lights everywhere. The big department stores had moving Christmas displays in the big street display windows. Sidewalks crammed with shoppers. Cops directing traffic at each corner. Too bad it's all gone.

OMG you just filled in the rest of the memories for me! We used to go to the old Spiegel store in downtown Chicago and order things. Then we had to wait weeks for it to get delivered to our house. Don't forget the penny candy stores back in those days. Our parents would give us a dime, park in front of the store, and let us go in by ourselves to spend our dime! My favorite was the wafer like shell that looked like a space ship.

My mom as I recall was and is a beautiful woman and loving mother, she always dressed up when going out with my dad and had bright golded blond hair and looked amazing from my earliest memories of her. When I see this video of petula clark her hair and face remind me of my mom from many years. My mom is a classy lady who set the bar for women I've known in my life. We had a stereo hifi in 1969, one of those long low cabinets, my dad was into the old big band records but i remember we had a tijuana brass album, But I still remember downtown and other songs. And tin bath, yes. If you are talking about one of those old galvanized tubs? I remember we lived in a house and my mom would heat up water to put in it and we would have a bath. I think it was the house before we lived in the next one that had a claw foot tub where when we turned the water on sometimes it would come out all rusting from the old plumbing and we had to wait for the water to clear. We lived in an old farmhouse that was turned into a rental when the owners moved into town but still farmed the property. Even had farmer relatives that had modern plumbing but a still using outhouse out by the chicken coops! We'd go into town and eat at the coffee shop at the department store for a treat or go to town and get a cherry coke at the soda fountain and next door was the meat market with wood shavings on the floor. Remember when there would be fans like ceiling fans above the store doors out on the sidewalk. Me reminiscing too much here LOL. But loved those days!

When you're alone, and life is making you lonely
    You can always go
    Downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
    Seems to help, I know
    Downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
    How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, no finer place for sure
    Downtown everything's waiting for you
    Downtown
Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
    There are movie shows
    Downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
    Where they never close
    Downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with him too before the night is over
    Happy again
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, where all the lights are bright
    Downtown, waiting for you tonight
Downtown, you're gonna be alright now
    Downtown, downtown
    Downtown
    Downtown
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
    Guide them along
So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, don't wait a minute for
    Downtown, everything's waiting for you
    Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown
Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown

This is the first record (a 45) I ever, ever purchased. I was thirteen years old. And I heard it on what was known then as a Germanium radio. No battery, and no electricity required to operate it. It came with a wire and a clip you would attach to metal with earphones (tiny) for listening. I would attach the clip to the metal springs on my bed. Berserk, totally berserk. But it was mesmerizing (the song, and the experience). A memory though happy in remembrance, melancholy now. Thank you sir. And that was Bronx, N.Y.. And Downtown Manhattan meant the world to me.

Glad you recognized it, because I did a poor job of describing it. And you are actually thus far the first person I have heard from that experienced this radio. You know, in retrospect I believe though we cherish the memories, none of us were prepared to make the most out of them at the time. Thanks for sharing JH

I should have added that how remarkable that you had likely the same magic bestowed upon you by this musical number through the rarity of a Germanium Radio. It just puts a stamp upon my passage through time. Again, thanks JH.

you gotta look at the world as if you just got out of a bunker where you were trapped for 10 years by yourself or with a few others, and then see behind the scruffiness and the phones and interrupt the people in what they are doing by shouting a cheerful "hi" at them and then see how they respond. Just keep shouting "Hi" and waving at each person as you walk down the street filled with people until eventually someone responds, and then engage them in a meaningful conversation about something positive and interesting like panda conservation or what they think about butterflies or something about themselves like what foreign country they have visited and what they did there or their pets or ask them about music. Some basic things that most humans can and will have in common with you and will talk about is: music, animals, nature, travel and food. And sometimes dancing.

I grew up in a small town in NJ that had about 10 stores: a candy store, pizza place, butcher, deli, real estate and hardware. But us kids said even before this song came out, "I'm going downtown to get some M&Ms" What struck my chord (and probably anyone's) about this song is that downtown can be anywhere and, compared to sitting in the house, downtown can be exciting anywhere you live---it doesn't have to be swinging London in 1964.

Actually James, "Downtown" is a lot closer to you than you may realise. Recording executives in New York had rejected all of the compositions of British Composer Tony Hatch. Disconsolate, Hatch walked up 7th Avenue, down Broadway and over to 8th. He had just passed Madison Square Garden when the neon lights of New York's theater district came on and this tune began to form in his head. The only thing Tony Hatch got wrong that day, the Theatre district is in mid-town Manhattan while all the while Tony thought he was "Downtown". The rest as they say is history!

There are trees and seats. Everyone is always so happy there, and I've had so many good times there I'm starting to think of it as my 'downtown'.
