The holes in your wall would actually be structurally needed for water drainage, to keep the wall from being pushed out by a buildup of hydraulic pressure. Nowadays they add perforated plastic piping behind retaining walls to drain the excess water, but 'holes' were the original prefered way.(the end caps you have in place now, are also correct as they would have been attached to internal framing to help keep the wall from bulging outward)
Instead of using big bricks (like 1x6x5 panels) to create the road in the middle of the city at an angle, you could use small bricks (1x2 bricks, plates and tiles) for the road. The toleranz of the lego bricks allows them to make a road which actually bends, creating a smooth curve. This will eliminate the chunky feel between the different angled road pieces and it will also get ret of the gaps between the sections
That makes sence. I just thought the current slope looks very unnatural, but I do understand you not wanting to use illegal building techniques. The current chunky slope kinda reminds me of old city build simulators
That's exactly how I did in my previous town and it looks very cool. I don't even think you can call that illegal, as it is not putting any particular strain on the bricks, but just taking advantage of the gaps.
@@brickstudiosYT I don't think it is actually illegal, as you are not putting any extra strain on the bricks, but just using the natural gaps due to production tolerances. However, if you want to go with the sloped sections, try to use the cheese slopes on both ends to try to close the gaps and some brackets to push the bricks half a plate forward.
This city is coming along so well but don’t forget bins, drains, benches and things like that! You could also add in a sewer pipe or system underneath and try putting actual things down there like drainage and pipes!Hope this city comes along well!
Maybe adding some brick built graffiti and some stickers could help make the wall more interesting. Another idea is adding a brown bar piece coming out of one of the headlight bricks to add a drainage pipe, theres a lot of footpath areas with bridges and walls like that in my town, could add some nice realism. Loving the city so far.
Ultimately up to you as it's your build but a couple suggestions: - Add a couple of planter boxes to the sidewalks to give the city less of a "industrial" look. - Gate arms for the railroad crossings could be separate from the flashers, I think it would look more realistic. This can be accomplished with technic parts to create a counterweight for the gate. There's a couple of designs on Rebrickable that would work well. - I know the river is partially built already, but the blue water is giving a tropical look that doesn't blend well. I would recommend using black plates for the center of the riverbed, and either brown or dark tan for the shorelines. Clear tiles could go on top. Really intrigued by this build and can't wait to see additional progress!
That’s a good idea either black or dark green under the translucent blue plates would make the water look better. Also feel like the train track should be raised over the water
6:30 you should use 1x2 bricks, plates, and tiles, to make a curved road there instead. It would probably break up the boxiness of that area and pair nicely with the bridge 👌. 1x2 bricks can curve if you have enough of them as there is a small gap between each brick 👍. Love the citys progress so far ❤ looking forward to see how it turns out 😀
I think you'd want the sidewalk to have a stairway up to the upper part. Also, get some little yellow flowers for dandelion in the sidewalks? I think having little chunks that are a slightly darker or lighter color, little 'broken' corners and things would help with the organic feel of the sidewalks as well, make it seem like they weren't all poured at the same time, had repairs done to them, that sort of thing. I also know that at least in Chicago, there tend to be a lot of planter boxes on the sidewalks between the road and the main thoroughfaire, so designing some of those might be fun- they're generally done by the buildings, so are different in different places. Keep building ad having fun, though! I think I'm not the only person enjoying LEGO building vicariously through this project. As for the road slope gaps... maybe something like getting a large grey sail and rolling it around a pair of antennae to put in there? Or even a white one, as a sort of 'caution, change in slope' line in the street. Don't think that would be considered illegal construction techniques.
19:46 Maybe you could use the regular SNOT brick in a color like Medium Nougat. It's close enough in color that when covered by the big limb piece, it could just look like a shadow. That combined with adding the smaller 1x1 leaf plates on top of the bigger limb element could help to further add detail and cover up the SNOT brick. Alternatively, you could stick a 2L bar (part 78258) in Reddish Brown through the headlight brick and the limb piece to let it sit just slightly above the stud so it isn't illegally bending anymore, and it could look like a branch inside of the plants. Adding smaller leaves on top would also further cover this up if needed.
20:11 Just put the headlight bricks on their back and add a 1x1 plate to the indented part (which is the top when you put them on their back). That gives a non-recessed stud on the side. Keep in mind that they will now protrude from the back of your wall, so reposition them to not interfere with the road behind it.
You could decrease the angle of the middle ramp piece and angle the top one a bit more downwards to make that gap smaller. Might add a small gap on the top but should look a lot smoother with two smaller gaps than one big. Edit: or maybe add some angle to the bottom one since that one is the smoothest right now.
For the plants on the wall, you can use one of the sprout pieces (either carrot top or three leaf sprout) as a bar to hold the leaf piece, and you can push the bar in until the leaf is flush with the wall.
You did a REALLY good job doing this and I have a suggestion you should make a waterfall coming from the top layer! If you are reading this I have officially wasted your time.
13:41 They’re a bit tall for grass, I would make them flowers instead. 24:36 Just a suggestion, make the water tiles go in the direction of the River flow. 😊
The Lego city is looking great! A suggestion I have is since you can't put the leaves on the bridge I would suggest using a 1×1 green flower piece. It may be small but it could work as well. Great work as well!
19:50 you can place the indented one on it’s back and put a 1x1 on the stud, it has the diameter of a regular brick and is flush with the wall on the stud size, with the antistud sticking out on the back of the wall
For your railroad crossing sign 10:07 , you can use the LEGO Plate 3 x 3, Cross #15397. Then tile with two 1 x 1 #3070, two 1 x 2 #3069, and one 1 x 3 #63864.
For the gaps in the slope road, you could build the ends out of wedge plates and bricks (2x4 brick 41767 seems to be the best option for DBG) so they can slide closer together.
lower the supports by 1 or 2 plates in the road to close the gap or raise them to widen the gap for cheese slopes, use slider plates underneath to support the cheese slopes also use carrot tops to pin the leaves to the wall
To attach the greenery on the brickwork you can use either green bars or those brown stick ones with little curves on the one end. then you could have the greenery flat with the wall :) bit looking really good!
greenery on the wall potential idea - maybe use a stem piece to connect the leaves to the indent, that way the leaves are locked in and can be pushed down the stem to be flush whilst not causing stress on any pieces! Even though its slightly a different green as i don't believe they make it in DG (I may be wrong there though!), all foliage is different shades so it won't look out of place!
didnt watch the whole video yet but i think you should alternate the lamp posts . Now they look kinda too ''robotic'' by being parralel like modern street lights . Also if you use leds in them one day they could make shadow squares in the middle of the road
Would be cool having a lego store in the city, but not just the sets and pick a brick but allso the giant sculptures and models for display (Just use lego minifiguress)
I really like this, but i have a few small criticisms that might look better: Firstly, for the grass, you could try to use varying size/color pieces (darker shades) to create the randomness and feel of grass, so it doesn’t look as uniform. Second, for the water, the flat tiles on top might look good if you also gave them two-tones, to simulate the illusion of small waves and ripples in the water. Also, i really like that road incline, and for that gap in the top, (if it isnt illegal) i wonder if 1x1 cheese wedges could fit face-down to minimize the gap. Anyway, nice build!
Idea for the river- small island in the middle of the river. Maybe 4 to 12 studs of water on one side, and 12 to 16 on the other? Then 10 to 16 for the island... ish
Stick a green or brown pole into the indented bricks near the arch and connect the first leaf pieces. Just push the pole in so it’s not sticking out of the side of the wall that’s visible.
I have a suggestion. Replace the black railway sleepers with either lightgray ones (for concrete) or brown ones (for wood). make them 2studs wide each and also space them out by 2 studs
9:42 I can assure you those sidewalks do not look weird at all and are actually very similar to real-life super steep streets. Reminds me of the sidewalks you find in San Francisco

They don't fit in the gap sadly

@@brickstudiosYT what about the 2x1x2/3 slope? Part 61409. Different angle to fit in that road gap perhaps?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you've been putting in sewer grates anywhere.
I've thought about it, but since the roads are brick built sideways I haven't found a way to make a perfect circle for a Lego dish piece to fit in.
I think, it is much better to make the clip on the fence 2 studs away from each other to make it look like realistic 😊
27:22 You should put a hidden feature where you shine the light under the bridge and you see Tennage Mutant Ninja Turtles

use rouded plates for curvy roads,
stick a bar in the wall and the GREEN for it to not be illegal
For the indented headlight bricks: You could use the trans green light saber pieces through the hole of that and your leaf piece. Perfectly legal!
For the ramp on the street, you might be able to make it all one section while using rounded plates and bricks to add a couple of gapless bends.
the greenery on the sides of the bridge could still be attached with 1x3 posts going through the "vines" piece and the indented 1x1.
