- Check out our in-depth interview about the Glowforge laser cutter here: www.tested.com/tech/548192-goi...
Earlier this month, we introduced the Glowforge, a new laser cutter that's designed to be accessible and easy to use in the home or workshop. A lot of you had questions about how it worked, and we wanted to learn more about it as well. So we were invited back to Glowforge's headquarters to get some more demos of its unique features, like the ability to draw anything with a pen and have it etched or cut on your material of choice. We also sat down with Glowforge CEO Dan Shapiro to get more details on the Glowforges limits and potential.

I hate it when I develop a huge urge to buy a piece of equipment I have no need for whatsoever.
+Neumah ya, but I'm sure you could find use for it
*Don't do it*. The stories say that 3D printing and laser cutting can be dangerously addictive, and when it's this easy who's to say that you'll ever be able to stop...
+Neumah Need is overrated, focus more on your wants...
+Neumah take the dive like i have done ;)

I would love to try that machine out - it's right up my alley
That settlers board was beautiful! Fun game. Neat glowforge product.
Great follow up interview! Love the "look what I can do in 5 minutes"
The idea of adding a camera to the lid, and use the streaming video to align a work piece is an amazing idea!!! I've messed so much work by eye-balling something, and it's off by a few MM.
I love the camera print alignment idea - super cool.
AAAGGHHH I want that Settlers board! Beautiful!
wow i never watched tested videos in about a year, and your face has cleared up! it used to have acne scars, but now it looks normal :D
Great video, well done Tested!
I've got mine ordered :) can't wait to get hold of it
Decided to buy an LS-1416 from Boss Laser. Due to 60W cutting capability - glad I did!
Read the full interview it discusses why they originally called it the 3D laser printer in previous videos.
Amazing stuff, keep bringing it!
innovators... these people are genius. thanks for the lesson
My question was, what separates this from a traditional engraver? This answered that question. Thank you!
Amazing. I hope this gadget is also for home use.
Been in this business for a long time. The sysytem packaging is nice, the camera alignment is interesting. There are better software print driver software and graphic packages out there from what little I saw in this video (which is well done) . Someone told me this is a very low cost unit, but he also said it is a DC excited CO2 tube which isn't the best engine for every application. Looks like this guy has something going on here, but before purchasing it, I'd be clear about where spare parts come from, service/support capabilities etc...
Holy shit i am so excited for this! i just ordered one.
holy crap that settlers of catan board looks amazing
Is it possible to put a sheet of the Falcon kit in there to cut through fully so no need to cut out manually? Can this be done on the fly following the existing cuts and making them deeper? And leave cuts that are not deep alone. Or does the whole need to be scanned and the unleep cut lines to be deleted from that digital image?
Wow just so Amazing Thank you for sharing
The Illustrator plugin just took this from "this thing is cool" to "I have to have one of these".
can we use this machine to cut gold silver brass with precise cutting only
Pre-ordered the basic.
I pre-ordered based on Will's excitment. I really hope I find some great uses for it! I am really interested in methods of etching/coloring/marking thin metals...
+howpeculiar Not sure you can use it with metal? i may be wrong.
+xXFIREWIREXx It looks like it can change anodized aluminum appearance, and work with metals like stainless steel. I am still learning, but it looks like there are chemicals you can use to make it possible to change the appearance of the metals using the 40W laser. Even if I can't, there are tons of neat things I can picture using it for! Like everyone that has ordered, I guess I will throw my $100 off referral link out there
glowforge.com/referred/?kid=TtTOL8
+howpeculiar you can mark on metal if you use a moly lube or cermark
+xXFIREWIREXx
It works with metal just fine... Just doesn't CUT it.
+sethmo38 Looks like CerMark and TherMark are exaclty what I was thinking about! Thanks!
And just like a first year apprentice cut something out of the middle of a sheet! Maybe just eyeballing and looking for the red dot has some use?
i still want one
useful video, thanks
when will this product be out?
i seen the date on uploaded video and that was a year ago :/
quick question lets say I wanted to engrave a picture on a pcs of acrylic how do I do it without it cutting thruw?
What software can/should I use for a CNC machine and a laser machine?
This is so cool
I make corsets. Would this cut though layers of fabric?
all I can say is: AWESOME
Given the "cloud" processing, if Glowforge fails as a business, will the cutter continue to work? Or will it be an expensive paperweight?
That is a cool machine.
+RetroWeld I've been a fan of your channel for awhile now. Just wanted to say thanks for making such awesome videos!
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
A lot of peoples links weren't working for me so if anyone is still looking for a fresh link here is mine to save $100 + the already 50% off, no this is not spam there really is a discount as you can see it's linking you to glowforge's actual website glowforge.com/referred/?kid=lAX5Cw
se puede comprar la maquina desde españa, y cuanto cuesta mandarlo, y el precio total? y si se estropea como se repara y los materiales? gracias
They've got a laser cutter where my dad works. (Not sure if it's one of these?) It's pretty cool for making little key chain trinkets.
+Kael maybe you can buy good machine from mine, zbjxsales@gmail.com
It seems to cut just about everything else, but does it etch and cut metal? And if it does cut meta,l how thick can it cut the metal?
can the glowforge laser cutter cut and crease cardstock to make a small box?
does it work for laser invitations too? how long would take for 200pcs?
Can you put wood in there and apply a Danish oil finish?
How would you do engraving on wood. say a bowl or box
I WANT THIS NOW!!!! I CAN MAKE A PROJECT FOR MY SCHOOL LIKE THE EIFEL TOWER MYNE!!!!!!
what all can it cut and engrave? metal glass... etc
What happens if a material catches fire? Like in the video it kinda flamed up. Are there safety features?
Is this machine the one with the cloud based interface?
My question that it only show paper, glass and wood, those these cut porcelanate o other material
I'm a simple man, I see tools that help me with my hobby, I buy
I clicked and it's $6000, nevermind
just for curiosity how much it really cost, how difficult it is?????
does it work on stainless steel?
What is the largest project that will fit in this machine?
I swear, the glowforge ad came up when I clicked this video!!
i want this glowforge laser cutter
Can you cut thick fabric with this
What will it Cost wehen ist finished?, the pre-Order Prize is 2300$ will it be cheaper?
Those guys at glowfordge might book a room for you guys the next time you pay a visit i bet XD
Was about to order it, but >400$ shipping costs makes it a little too expensive in total for me.
Tell someone who cares, Eli.
What's the problem of me not buying it. Looks like you actually care a little too much.
+Eli Prenten And the initial $2000 price tag didn't?
+Riptide paying 20% just to ship it is more deterring because its just moving the machine from one place to another and not the actual product
Riptide 2000 and 2400 is quite a difference. Especially because there are high import taxes where I live so it would total in about $3000 just for the base model.
Not even talking about sending it back if something is broken...
Question: IF at some point Glowforge were to go out of business (not anytime soon) can the machine still function without any of the web/cloud based services it uses? Can I use it offline if needed? (Even if it is limited to traditional laser cuter functions without any of the fancy camera/auto settings)
Edit: Read the extra Q/A's, I don't like the "Flash custom firmware" answer. I would like some type of basic raster/vector cutting drivers to use as a backup directly from them.
+insanegammer109 It would become an expensive door stop, unless they release the software so you can run it on your own server.
Will it work with CorelDraw?
WANT! MIGHTY, MIGHTY NEED!
still waiting for ours - summer of 2017. Should have bought a ebay one.
I want to see it do a pint glass
Will this machine cut vinyl for heat transfers?
we produce cutting plotter can do it ,if you interest, welcome contact me:

>> But does it work with Linux Ubuntu OS ?
Can anyone explain to me, what was so exiting in this product, even 5 years ago?
I’m not getting.
I can’t understand what was all this admiration about
BTW, I’ve bought my 120W laser (1400x900mm) in 2013 (8 y.a.!) for just $5,5K USD
I have officially ordered one of these. I'm very excited, but nervous. $2k is a big investment for me. Hopefully it works as advertised and someone can quickly tackle the offline contingency, though with 12mil in pre-sales there is a lot of runway.
can this cut metal
Does it work with aluminum?
Could you use a glowforge to make more glowforge's?
Does it use co2 gas and a water pump key me know how to set it up
I wish there was a company doing this in Europe cause the shipping and import duty more than doubles the price of this. Also if you don't preorder the price of the printer doubles again.
But can it cut a mirror from the reflective side?
i wish i can buy it :(
WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE TSHIRTS NORM!!!
Can it cut pearl?
can this machine cut thin metal sheets? like 1 mm?
Absolutely nope! For cutting metal you need at least 500W and this is only 45W on the PRO version. This is just for crafts
A Tested video shorter than 10 minutes, impossible!
does anyone know of a smaller version for stencil stuff which doesnt cost that much
cricut maker?
So did Adam order one yet? :)
+Cornelius Sneed probably.
***** probably
+Cornelius Sneed Adam already has an actual industrial laser cutter.
+TheEmerald I believe he just borrowed it from someone
I have 2 questions: Can I use it to cut leather? What size is the cutting area?
+Dale Erwin It cuts leather, that's why I bought it. Working area is 12"x20" basic version and 20" by infinite length pro version.
(Save $100 glowforge.com/referred/?kid=UrfCQ4)
+Alexander Neverov maybe you can buy cheaper one from mine, also we surpport many different work area machine zbjxsales@gmail.com
When I first visited the GF site, the had 100k in preorders. Now the got 11.5mil.
+UBranMuffin ohh!!!!!
when and where can you buy it ?
Add my whatsapp :+86 18576470650
cool
was thinking a bout gitting one to make a better muse trap.. may be a more human way to git them with death ray....
This device is a WORLD CHANGER, RADICAL REDISTRIBUTION OF PRODUCTION ONR MILLION THUNBS UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How large of and image can you cut
+Aneesah Moore maybe you can buy one from mine,I can support any size work area. zbjxsales@gmail.com
was about to buy one (not because I need one) but the 1000$ of shipping costs to switzerland is kind of a turn off...
it would be perfect if the machine was self-contained. No cloud computing or anything similar, let the machine calculate everything. (I know it would be more expensive but at least when they eventually drop the service, you won't own an overpriced brick)
Again, I want one! Don't need one . . .
+Edward Leachman me too
+Edward Leachman If you don't get it might regret it later lol.
glowforge.com/referred/?kid=UrfCQ4 $100 off
that settlers board O.O
how much
Another concern is vapor and particulates deposited on the output window/lens of the beam delivery system. Debris here, will burn onto the output optic. Cannot be cleaned, once burned in. Normally this would be purged with a blanket of flowing gas. Seems unlikely he could do that, on this low cost device. Perhaps uses a negative pressure plenum to try and evacuate gases, as that is cheaper. The High Voltage power supply that drives the tube, is hard to make reliable, also.Cycling off and on, produces much stress. Field replacement of a dead laser is probably not possible, without a skilled laser technician to do it. Certainly no warranty after DIY repair of $500 glass laser. May have to go to factory for repair. Cleaning and alignment is always difficult for laser systems. Problem with this entire unit is, he is trying to deliver an industrial level of technology, at a consumer price. This is difficult. Best thing is to wait and see how this survives in the field. You will find out soon enough, on the net. Still , best of luck to him. It is an ambitious undertaking.
Unfortunately, they don't have an answer for the "what happens if you go away in 5 years" question. That's not a what if, but a when.
"We haven't decided yet. We'll publish a reference version because the firmware on there honestly doesn't even understand G-code. It's very low level. It's not something where you flip a switch in and it'll work offline. But we want to make sure people can get access to configure the Wi-Fi on board and other parameters. It'll be a framework to get started. We actually do the motion plan in the cloud, so what comes down isn't even G-code."
The local firmware doesn't do much of anything except move the head, and as they said, it's not a G-code parser or anything. My assumption is it's super low-power and incapable of doing any calculations like that locally.
+Pete Brown Very quickly they will realise to keep the back end running you will have to pay for every cut you make even if you make multiples of the same thing - and if they cease trading you own a useless box - I'm out
+Colin McNair Right. It costs real money to run a cloud service. They've presumably built into the up-front price enough to run the service for X months or years. After that, they need to sell more product to keep the service running. They could either sell new units, subscriptions, or something else. Lots of ways to do that.
If it turns out they aren't selling enough new product to fund cloud usage of the original product, then they stop investing in this first product. Given it's a cloud service, it's very easy for them to terminate support in the cloud for this product to encourage people to move to a newer model. If the intelligence is all client-side, you don't have that problem. I don't believe they've committed to any timeframe for supporting the product.
I'm not saying they're doing anything malicious, it's just that running a cloud service is a lot more of a commitment than most companies and individuals realize, and startups come and go.
+Pete Brown Exactly. Although it's relatively inexpensive for a laser cutter, I'd much rather have the peace of mind to not have to worry that one day my internet would go out and leave with a $2000 box. There are too many what ifs. If they fully flesh out the offline mode, I wouldn't mind paying slightly more for it, but right now there's just too many doubts lingering. What if their servers get DDoSed, what if some undersea cable somewhere gets broken by an unexpected earthquake, what if the laser cutter has some vulnerabilities.... Lots of things could go wrong.
+Pete Brown This! Exactly this! I've been telling this to people ever since this became a hype. A lot of things make sense to run from the cloud, but for something that can completely break a piece of hardware if cloud support is removed? No, sorry, that's a terrible idea. I'm a bit waiting for the backlash of a) this not being all they advertise it to be, because frankly it isn't, and b) lack of future support.
However, who knows, maybe they'll be bought by one of the bigger actors, like Epilog, and something good could come of it. Until then I can't with a clear mind recommend anyone to get this, even though I'm happy to see that there is some lateral thinking going on in a business that sorely needs it.
It takes less computing power to parse G-code and do motion planning than it does to connect to the cloud. They've just put as much as they can in the cloud to stop anyone from cloning it. Which also means that making it work standalone would basically mean designing your own control software from scratch.
I've wanted to do this to make a chocolate megalodon tooth!
How do you use the printer to make a fossil tooth chocolate?
I’d love one, and the price isn’t terrible, but I could NEVER buy one that didn’t provide for the software to run locally.
Believe it or not, there are areas where full-time internet access is NOT ubiquitous, or it can be really* low bandwidth, or spotty for continuous access.
I would like to ask one thing, has TESTED been paid any money by the Glowforge creators? Or if this is just a true interest in the tech.
will this cut fabric
Hi sir,we have laser cutting machine for cutting fabric,we have in this field since 2006 with competitive price, pls add my whatsapp:=86 18576470650.
I want one so bad but have absolutely no use for it or the space
Is the laser removable so that I can mount it to my starship and use it as a laser gun for battles in the near future?
