    *Helpful info. Please like so that potential buyers read this*
    I tried preordering a few and their customer service was piss poor. Thy never provided a contact number that worked and e-mailing resulted in zero support other than the only answers being "we don't know" (when asked about how long the preorder special would run, what shipping would cost, how long until items would be shipped, maintenance options, etc). Needless to say I abandoned all hope in the task and was disappointed to find out that due to a web app, if my internet goes down then the device just becomes a paperweight (not to mention the sketchy possibility that you might need to pay to use the online app - can't be sure as no one could answer that question). My advice is let other people be the guinea pigs and make a plan for something tried, tested and lest lurk-in-the-shadows-y.

      I canceled my pre-order a year ago because they kept pushing delivery back and back, and kept adding new features I wasn't looking for. I was disappointed after waiting 16 months past the kickstarter, but at least I got my money back quickly.

      You can buy a MUCH more powerful, MUCH bigger, MUCH better built, NON-cloud device for HALF as much from China, and have money left over for a LOT of upgrades and consumables.
      Look up "K40" and "Bluebox" laser cutters, there's a large community built around hacking and improving them.
      They start at around $500 delivered, and $2000 will easily get you 200, maybe 300W of laser power.

    1:25 it is not possible to use fibre optics with a CO2 Laser since the wavelength of a CO2 laser is different then the wavelength of for example a solid-state laser (which can use fibre optics). So using mirrors is the only possibility to direct the beam.

    • @rexgambit6835
      @rexgambit6835 6 лет назад +1

      I am sorry but you are misinformed. A fiber can be made for different optical wavelength. Fibers that can carry CO2 laser wavelengths are very common in biomedical.

      @Brainwash110 6 лет назад

      Really? Never heard that before. All the books I read and also at work I only was told you need mirrors for CO2 Lasers. Can you give me an example for such a machine? Couldn't find anything on google when I searched for CO2 Laser with optic fibres.

    DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE PIE RECIPE
    2 cups white sugar
    5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    4 egg yolks
    1/4 cup butter
    1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
    4 egg whites
    1/4 cup white sugar
    -Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    -In a saucepan, whisk together 2 cups sugar, cocoa and flour. Blend in evaporated milk and vanilla. Beat egg yolks, and stir into pan. Add the butter or margarine. Heat, stirring constantly just until butter is melted. Pour filling into unbaked pie shell.
    -Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until pie is not "wobbly" when shaken.
    -Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add 1/4 cup sugar, beating constantly, until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue on pie.
    -Return pie to oven, and bake until meringue is golden.
    ENJOY!

    Having used a couple normal laser cutters, they are already easy as hell to use. Only things you need to do differently is use CorelDraw instead of an online web app and focus the laser before cutting. It's real simple.

    Well, you can pay for it now, but it's still a pre-order. Their estimate is June of 2018, but I mean, they planned to ship in December 2015 originally and are still being delayed, so who knows when, or if, we'll ever actually see these things.

    • @MorRobots
      @MorRobots 6 лет назад +1

      I'm going to ask (read in a polite tone)....why?
      For $8k you could have picked up a number of equal and or superior cutters on the used market and or built you own.
      Example: buildyourcnc.com/blackToothLaserCutterAndEngraver.aspx
      This kit fully loaded is $2k and has everything you need to adapt the build for multiple use cases (4'x8' setups, fixtures, ect).
      I would understand if the whole time is money thing was at play, but at 4x the cost of a DIY option and 2x a used industrial cutter, I don't see the savings.

    • @brentbousquet
      @brentbousquet 6 лет назад +1

      MorRobots well I didn't pay that much for it because it was cheaper during the kick starter. Also it can do more things than they talked about here that no other lasers can do. Biggest thing for me is it's hassle free. I have a diy cnc mill so I'm pretty confident I could have made a laser too but with this I took it out of the box and it just worked. My guess is they want to be like apple. Most people who buy a Mac get it because it just works and that's what this is.

      Also, outsourcing has its own risks, including control of intellectual property and quality. There are still people who prefer domestically manufactured goods.

    • @SeptrothFFXI
      @SeptrothFFXI 6 лет назад +3

      Jonathan I have a laser and do jobs with it and you would have to buy ALOT of engraving and cutting before you could afford even $8k. My typical laser job labor is $20-$30 to do award plaques, 20 names tags is $35 + cermark if it's not anodized aluminum. Hope by "a few" your talking like 4000 name tags or award trophies. Material cost is not counted because you have to buy that too. It ends up Much cheaper to just buy it from someone with a laser unless you are doing ALOT of cutting. Places like ponoko and emachineshop or similar charge a small fortune 5-10x or more what a small family owned laser business will charge you. TBH I don't know who buys from them because it is so expensive.

    • @SeptrothFFXI
      @SeptrothFFXI 6 лет назад +1

      Aereto Aereto outsourcing does not always mean out of the country it can just mean down the street. Most shops are willing to sign NDAs on projects if their large enough. Quality of parts in the laser cutting/engraving world is based on the files provided to the company doing the laser cutting. If you use a local shop you could get stuff done same day. Hell sometimes I do while you wait on simple jobs that the artwork is sent in ahead of time.

      Equally powerful 40W laser cutters are all over eBay and Aliexpress/Alibaba.
      Oh, and they're ~$400-500. And they even give you a FREE EXHAUST OPTION(a $1000 option on this piece of junk, lol).
      For the price they want, you can buy an industrial, 200W+ machine that will cut thick wood and acrylic, even do lithopanes on glass.

  • @rosecovell930
    @rosecovell930 5 лет назад +1

    The pricing shown here is not what's on the glowforge site. It's actually cheaper by a few thousand. For the Pro it's not $8,000 but $6,000. For the basic it's $2,500.

  • @0ZeldaFreak
    @0ZeldaFreak 6 лет назад

    I saw a laser cutter in a video and I wanted one but the price is an issue. Also I want sure if it is noob friendly. I mean I want something simple. From my side, I only want easy maintenance, like a normal printer.
    3D Printing is a good thing but sometimes you need something better. Printing large objects are not cheap and you need a bigger printer. Wood is a good choice. Small details are hard to do by hand, when you're not good. I made a Hyrule Crest into a wood log and it was not easy. I didn't went that deep and even used a dremel. I made some mistakes but it still looks good. I mean you can build something that looks handmade or you can build something that looks perfect.

      So with the two most important features I was looking for, how does it handle 1/4 inch plywood and passthrough on the pro model? Some of the rest I could give them, and for thin pieces of wood, sure, but those two were where I was very skeptical on.

    • @brentbousquet
      @brentbousquet 6 лет назад

      Epic Sauce 1/4 hasn't been a problem for me but for what I do with it I almost never cut anything that thick. As far as the passthrough that's all in the software which they aren't done with yet so I haven't tried it out. But I will say just having it there is really nice because you can stick stuff in that's way too long without having to cut it.if you want one now the muse is great but this does have some great features. I will also say being able to engrave on curved surfaces has been amazingly easy.

    1000$ for ventilation !? You can buy not one, but two AC units for that price. How can ventilation for this little device be so expensive ? Are filters made of gold ?

    • @rjc0234
      @rjc0234 6 лет назад +21

      but does your AC unit dump the heat into your house? no it dumps it outside. laser cutters give of some seriously toxic chemicals, so its probably contains stuff more valuable than gold! (not to mention the likely 20%+ extra fee for convenience of not having to do research)

    • @rodionraskoljnikov3803
      @rodionraskoljnikov3803 6 лет назад +5

      +rcj0234 So, if they offered a simpler ventilation system where you had a tube that you put through a window like you do for portable AC units they could lower the cost dramatically. Or is that illegal and they MUST use expensive filters because of the chemicals ? Do those filters have to be disposed in special facilities when they are not usable anymore ?

    • @longshot726
      @longshot726 6 лет назад +1

      Most of the cheaper laser cutters use a vent tube like you would find with a portable AC unit. Even more expensive ones just dump the fumes outside with ventilation piping though these are generally permanent fixtures. There are though units that act like a portable welding fume hood which uses sets of filters to extract toxins generated by the laser cutting process.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 лет назад +7

      Well, that's then a problem that they even sell the 1K cheaper model that DOESN'T have that vent system. Obviously it's not all materials that release toxic fumes when laser cut/engraved, but I sure wouldn't like to be on a room with the 4K model doing acrylic.
      I would guess that they forbid/don't advise you to use it with some specific materials then

      I wasn't in the Kickstarter, I pre-ordered mine on 16th of October 2016. Not sure in what batch I should have been. It was just so disappointing to receive delay after delay, so I decided to cancel.
      Also I got more experience with more high end lasers, like a trotec. Currently using a shared one in a makerspace, so I'm satisfied for now. Maybe one day I will buy one for myself.

    you could probably get all the features of the pro version for the price of the mid tier if you did the mods yourself on the low tier!

    Luke...you can't use fiberoptics with CO2 lasers... The 10μm wavelength would be absorbed in those

    I had this thing on preorder for nearly 2 years before I decided to cancel and get my money back. They still wouldn't have shipped it to me yet, so honestly I don't trust them anymore. There is another company that sells basically the same thing, but I'm pretty sure they can actually deliver.

    Just like 3D printers; it is $8000 now, but will be under $1000 in a couple years.

    • @steampunkskunk3638

      Danyal A. They will drop in price but not that much. Laser cutters have been around for a lot longer than 3D printers, the price on them stabilised a long time ago. This one is overpriced but has a lot of new features that Luke did not mention... It also sounds like a lot of these new features are not working yet.

    • @danyala.1659
      @danyala.1659 6 лет назад

      More use cases, more manufacturers, more supply, lower price. I would expect it to be $4000 or less in 5 years.

      @Spirit532 6 лет назад +2

      You can buy a slightly less feature-rich machine, with the same or more powerful laser tube, a more robust mechanical system, proper ventilation(and exhaust that isn't a $1000 extra option) for around ~$500 on eBay or Ali(express or baba, doesn't matter).
      Just search for "40W CO2" or "100W CO2", and so on.
      They've been around for years.

    The filter is not built into the pro version. It’s still a separate unit that goes underneath and is still not ready for the consumer. I have a pro and we received ours a few months ago without a filter as of yet. Still waiting.

    Umm... Buy CNC mill (Like shapeoko 3 or x-carve) and buy a laser to replace the router... just bit cheaper and you have a cnc mill as well. Just my thoughts on the mater

    Some of the features seem cool but this is a severely underpowered laser. 45 watts means that you will be limited on the material that you can use. Pretty sure that thing will have trouble with 1/4" and thicker acrylic. I woodman with the Trotec Speedy 300,and while it's way more expensive, it's more flexible with what you can do with it.
