Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Don’t be too downhearted when I received my test results they it would be a miracle if we could conceive a child but a few months later I was on the way to being the happiest dad in the world , and now my miracle just turned 16:) I wish you all the best for you both:)
There is always a chance as long as you’re not sterile. I had testicular cancer and had a sperm count in the low 100ks and I’m the father of 2 boys. A sliver of a chance is still a chance. Good luck.
If you REALLY Want kids then it doesn’t matter if it’s from a sperm donor or adoption. If that matters to you than you don’t really want kids. I said what I said 🤷♂️

@@tylerkerr8967 most adoptions agencies are just legalized human trafficking. There are major ethical issues with adopting and adoption is NOT a solution for infertility trauma. DO NOT adopt if your intention or reasoning for it is anything else other then wanting to help a child.

One of my favorite lines was from Frasier when they were trying to conceive. Niles was diagnosed with slow sperm and they found out they got pregnant right away. He says, "but my slow sperm!" And his wife says, "I must have fast eggs!" 😅 Hoping you have fast eggs!

We accepted that “fact” when I was married at 25 years old. After 5 years of marriage, SURPRISE !!
I became pregnant with identical Twin boys. On the day my boys were born, my inspirational calendar on my desk said.
“Never under estimate anyone. Miracles happen every day.”

That is wonderful! Im actually right now struggling with infertility for many years. Endometriosis as well! It destroyed my insides…especially my ovaries. Now I got diagnosed with a low ovarian reserve (low count of eggs) and feeling hopeless. Already had one round of insemination and one ivf round, both failed. I have no faith.
Not a miracle, just low chances per round.
I have endometriosis stage four. Was told at 17 I wouldn’t have kids. Accepted this as fact. Got pregnant at 22. Now 28 w a happy five year old.
My last job was in a fertility clinic. Patients either collected in the clinic or at home. The specimen had to arrive with an hour, since after that the sperm starts dying. It's worth getting a second opinion at a specialty clinic. Best of luck to you both on your journey. 🥰
That was one of my thoughts. I would do it at a clinic. A friend of mine and her husband did it. She said he had to go in a room with a pile of saucy magazines and a little plastic pot.
AGREED! needs to be tested ASAP! I work in a laboratory. I would never trust an at home kit for this. Good luck you two!

I've known people who have adopted children and all the sudden they became pregnant...of course all of the kiddos are their kiddos..love
I perform fertility testing and the specimen ideally needs to be tested within 30 mins of collection, and if that's not possible, then it needs to at least stay at body temp until it can be tested. So don't get discouraged by the mail in kit!

Agreed. My friend drove the specimen to the doctor’s office immediately to check the sperms viability. The mail in kit seems “iffy” but, perhaps technology has improved. Best of luck!
Yes shane needs to see a real dr to test correctly...
From what I've seen they have a preservation solution to stabilise the sperm, as long as the procedure is strictly followed to avoid contaminating your sample and in one or two days the own Clia-certified laboratory will send the results. I haven't really used it, but people say it's as good as a clinical study. But the contamination issue makes me wonder... People at home don't always follow properly even the most basic instructions.
Well, Shane, as someone who had their fertility test done in a clinic, you're lucky. Also, if it makes you feel better, I scored as "slightly below average" and my son just turned 4-years-old. Don't give up hope because there are always options and help.
Your "slightly below average" sperm had some good swimmers among them, and one very determined little guy who made it into the egg. Hooray! 😁
My husbands result was zero sperm cells and I hope every month that we’ll conceive

My partner was told he was sterile years ago.... but here we are with a 4yr old & one on the way. ❤️ There is always hope !

My husband & I struggled with fertility too. We did all the testing & it’s frustrating and stressful, and it took an emotional toll on both of us. It took us several years, but we were able to conceive and have a healthy baby. Our daughter is now 10 year old. I wish you both the best with your fertility journey. Sending you lots of love.

My parents adopted me and immediately found out that they were expecting their first biological child, my brother. Some things happen for a reason. I am confident that the two of you will have a family in exactly the way it is meant to be.

My neighbour tried conceiving for 8 years and thought that they couldnt succeed then opted for adoption...after they adopted a boy they got pregnant with a baby gal... it was so amazing...prayer for the couple
Very close to the exact results except that my husband wasn’t in a wheelchair. We tried IUI and the nurse that performed the procedure said,” wow! Your count is is low, I dont think it is going to work for you.” BUT the sperm spinning nurse said, “It only takes one!!” That ONE got me two beautiful and perfect sons…during two different IUI’s….three years apart!
One son is now 18, the other is 16. It only takes ONE!” Hang in there!! It’s possible!!!
Nurses have no business commenting on things like that.

I would definitely test in a physical lab/doctor's office. My husband had a SA when we were trying to conceive, and the doctor's were adamant about the importance of time. The "specimen" needed to be tested within an hour of giving the sample, or there was a much higher chance of the sperm dying/inaccurate results. I highly recommend going into a doctor's office and collecting the sample there and giving it directly to the lab to begin testing.

Well if the sperm are dying in an hour they most likely would do the same inside her body. It can take up to 3 days to conceive after sex.

Yes I agree with you ……. It’s hard to believe so many factors affect the results . Wow. My daughter and her hubby r going through fertility tests right now. They r concerned about a condition her hubby has that can be passed down to their child. So they r having to make some hard decisions. I support and otherwise mind my own business. I wish this couple all the best Makes life very interesting I think. I was told I would never have kids and ended up with two wonderful girls.

Exactly. A man is how you act. It's nothing to do with, sperm count, dick size none of that nonsense. It's being grown enough to show when you're upset, but being strong enough to do something about it. It's about not giving up on something that's easily fixed or until there's no other option. I can't imagine what it feels like to be told your fertility is low but, every man should know you're no less of a man.
WHEN you do have your baby, I wish for you a healthy pregnancy, and easy delivery and happy healthy baby.

My grandma was told she wouldn't have anymore after my aunt, my mother was born 15yrs later, my grandma was 44.

We are also an interabled couple who have male-factor infertility and are on a journey to have a healthy, growing family. We worked with a reproductive endo and our numbers all bumped up to a much more "normal" level. If you haven't considered a consult, I highly recommend it!

I got pregnant using the mosie baby! I went a decade thinking I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant. I’m now holding my 6 month old baby as I type this. Only took 4 tries! I’m so thankful and can’t say enough good things!

I hope this dosen't sound weird but I think its really refreshing to see you being so honest about this because so little discussion takes place about disability and fertility. My education treated it like a taboo subject, and seeing you both helps undo the damage those schools caused because of their abelist tendencies. Hear hear!! I was fortunate enough to have progressive professors that taught it all - including how to put on condoms (I guess for the females that didn't have any experience with them) - & how to teach masturbation. And this was in the late 80s!
Just because you're alternative-abled doesn't mean you don't have the need or desire for sexual relations or biological family.

P.S. Something to perhaps consider is a vibrating cushion insert for the wheelchair to stimulate circulation in the "nether" regions. They operate on the same principle as a massaging recliner, but in cushion form.

My grandparents adopted my dad in the 1950s, and they were having issues having children. Then after they adopted him they had 5 biological children, four boys and 1 girl. Godbless and may yals dreams of a family come true.

My husband and I struggled with fertility issues. We tried naturally for almost 10 years. Did many IUI attempts (all failed). He was ok, I had thyroid issues. Twelve years in I found out I was pregnant! We had one. Our ability to conceive one was a gift from God.. for sure~ a son.
I was told I was infertile. Ended up getting pregnant on birth control and not discovering I was pregnant until I was nearly 6 months along because I was so confident that I couldn’t get pregnant. Now I have a happy and healthy beautiful 2 year old daughter. So yeah as many have said, always hope
I think it's great you are talking about this. I feel that normalizing conversations around fertility and the struggles that can come from trying to conceive can help so many couples that feel alone. I think this is also great for removing social stigma and the assumption that people in wheelchairs and other differently abled persons can't have children. I totally enjoy your videos and look forward to watching your journey :)
TMI: It took over 7 years, frequent visits to an infertility doctor and 2 surgeries for me to conceive. The first surgery was exploratory and the second was to remove the scar tissue which was preventing a pregnancy. With me being female of course different causes but same result. This is a very difficult season to go through.
It appears y'all have the information you need and a plan of action for improving the probability of a successful pregnancy. I pray you are so blessed in the very near future 🙏 ❤
Did you have a hysterosalpingogram?
I did and it didn’t show any blockage, but was told to try that month bc there could be an undetected blockage.
I got pregnant that month but miscarried 2 months later. Another 8 months later I finally got pregnant with my youngest. 🥰 I loved being pregnant, but Im sure glad to be passed this stage in my life. 😊
@@youserguide I am sorry for the loss of your 2 children but so happy you were blessed with children! Infertility is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy (don't care for that phrase but it seems to fit).
No. We found my body over produces scar tissue. I had an appendectomy when I was 12 yo which is what they believe was the event that produced the extra tissue. After not being able to conceive we went to a specialist. The laparatomy (exploratory) showed scar tissue was wrapped around each fallopian tube pulling them away from where they needed to be to release the egg to the proper place to accept sperm. A laparoscopy (the "hysterectomy-type incision ") allowed the surgeon to remove the scar tissue and the fallopian tubes dropped into the proper place. I was blessed that the scar tissue was not inside the fallopian tubes so at that point I was good to go.
During the time I was searching for answers I was amazed to find out how many different medical issues can cause infertility. I also learned just what a miracle getting pregnant is.
I had to have multiple hysteroscopies due to asherman syndrome which was severe intrauterine adhesions that blocked my Fallopian tubes and after removed would come back with a vengeance taking over more and more space stopping me from having even periods. After multiple surgeries that seemed failed I miraculously became pregnant with my youngest. After burying 3 babies and thankfully having 2 angel girls now.

I went through chemotherapy in college and was devastated at the thought of losing my fertility. Years later, I went in for a routine PET/CT and was told my appointment was canceled because of my lab results. I was thinking I had bad kidney values or something. The PA called to say my hcg was slightly elevated and I just needed to retest before my scan could be rescheduled. They figured it was a fluke/normal fluctuations. My second set of labs were higher. I was pregnant. Everyone was shocked. I had 2 more children the following 2 years. Blessings and love to you both!

I remember when I was 23 my ex and I were trying to have a baby. It took me a year.
Finally I started to get fertility testing and I got pregnant. One of the tests came back as a real concern to my ob/gyn . I can’t recall what it was called but after we made love I had to go to check the live sperm mixed with my own and my doctor told me that my secretions killed the sperm. He said there was some type of medication that could neutralize what ever was causing this to not do it anymore. Guys, this was over 40 years ago!! After all of that I now have 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren.
I’m sure everything is going to be fine. And I’m glad you’re going to retest because obviously the situation can change. It did for me.
A year isn’t really a long time. Doctors say that you should try for at least a year before seeking medical advice now.

Don’t get discouraged. The doctor told my daughter she would never have children. She has two beautiful kids. Now ages 11 and 12.
I know in this world it is too much to expect everyone to be respectful and loving but in the case of Squirmy and Grubs I wish it were true. These two people have more gumption than any I know and I want them to have the things that others take for granted. I was born disabled 75 years ago. Later my husband and I took a chance and had two wonderful perfect children. Now I have a grandson. Miracles do happen.

Thank you for sharing this 🖤 The one thing that doesn't get talked about enough is disabled/interabled intimacy and family planning. It's important to have as much information as possible available for other disabled/interabled couples. Thank you for reminding everyone that no matter your physical limitations, you can live a full life. You can be happy, you can have a great group of friends, you can have incredible adventures, you can find love, you can be intimate, you can get married, and you can have a family of your own. So excited to be included in y’all’s journey to parenthood! ❤️ Maybe IVF would be a good option if Shane’s unable to raise those numbers? I think there also might be medications that can help with that too! There still are lots of options going forward! It wouldn’t hurt to get a fertility doctor and establish a relationship so they can help y’all navigate this journey.

We have had an almost 5 year journey trying to have a baby due to my age (I’m 42) and my husband’s low testosterone (he’s a wounded warrior and the wheelchair thing is absolutely a consideration!) so we had great odds and almost gave up, but we have a beautiful 5 month old. Don’t discount that it can happen!

I'm 31 and haven't found mine and it bothers me at times. But then I remember that my mother found hers when she was 30 and they spent the rest of there lives together.

Don't let it discourage you. My husband and I faced infertility issues. For five years we had no signs of hope.We were on the verge of starting fertility meds. In 2020 when the whole world was falling apart around me, I found out that finally, finally I was pregnant with our miracle rainbow baby. Our daughter Irulan (Ear-uh-len) arrived at a tiny 3lbs 13oz but perfectly and utterly healthy. You've got all of us praying/sending you love.

Absolutely! He started working out more often, completely cut back on alcohol, ate healthier meals and took mens fertility vitamins. Although the journey seemed never ending while going through it, we were able to conceive naturally!

To my shock and horror, years ago, my husband announced to his coworkers, after a few adult beverages, "The swim team is good to go, but the pool needs some work!" I was told my odds of conception were slim, but after 8 years, and lots of practice, we naturally conceived. Have faith! It will happen when the time is right!

Oh surprise I had numerous miscarriages 2 boys, 1 ectopic, and 3 girls (1982-2011), and they are not sure how... Hope my good fortune rubs off on you.
Sorry you endured the miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies but glad in the end it all worked out for you....
I know a married couple that tried to have a baby for a couple years, but no results. Fertility testing showed that the husband had a low sperm count and that they probably could not have children. They now have 9 naturally conceived children. No fertility treatments were used at all.

So glad you guys are tackling this openly with us. I suffered from infertility and not many people were talking about it back then 15-20 years ago. Even now, people will say they are having fertility issues but nothing else is ever shared. This can help many people to seek ways to move forward with finding out what the issue could be.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this lovely couple. Shane looks good but I can see he has lost a little more muscle mass. I work in fertility and hoping for the best. They’ve come so far in IVF treatments and no matter what happens these two have sooo much love to give whether it’s their biological baby or if they take another route… that child will be blessed with nothing but endless love!!!!

I was really hoping that something would be straight forward for you both ! We tried to get pregnant for a couple of years and through tests etc discovered that I only had an extremely low chance of conceiving naturally . We were then on the waiting list to receive IVF treatment on the NHS ( UK) . After 3 years we stopped trying to get pregnant as it was really stressful . So stopped trying and several weeks after became pregnant !!!! 2 years later I had another baby . Not bad for someone given 5 % chance of conceiving. Don’t give up and try not to become obsessed and stressed . Sending you lots of love and prayers x 🙏❤️x
My father had slow swimmers but my parents conceived naturally and I’m here 64 years later. I know I was very much wanted and hoped for.
