Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

As a disabled man myself from England, I love watching your channel, although I am fairly new to it. Shane's dry sense of humour has me in stitches. I think what you have is so beautiful and inspiring. If only I could meet someone like Hannah myself. Elizabeth your daughter is a real credit to you.

It's good to see that there are people in this world who are just genuinely kind and loving people. Liz gets a lot of credit. To raise a child that looks at a person for who they are, regardless of a disability. Being a mother if a 20 year old son who has a walking disability. It gives me hope that someday he will find a young women like Hannah who will love him and look past the disability. Thanks for the great example you guys are that Love has no boundaries
I understand your sentiment, but the language you're using is a form of ableism. It's not "regardless" or "looking past" his disability, because these terms are basically saying that disabilities are inherently negative, which isn't true (: Shane and Hannah have talked about this a bunch.

I often wondered what Shane's parents reaction was to him saying he was moving across the country to be with Hannah.
I also wonder about Shane's parents. They're not mentioned much as so far as I know. I would love to see them too and hear their opinion.
@@kampover I think this is because last year Pa and Ma Bercow had some weirdos call their house ranting about Shane and Hannah's wedding. They feature heavily in his first book if you want to know more about them.

Liz is such an amazing mom. You can tell how much she cares for her daughter without suffocating her. Their bond is 🤞🏼. She raised Hannah in to the strong and kind hearted woman she is.
And the way she connects with Shane in such a loving way, welcoming him and taking him in to their warm family.
That level of mutual acceptance is the best feeling ever!

It made me emotional to see Liz talk about accessibility. It really highlights how we really don’t understand what someone goes through until we put ourselves in that person shoes. So happy to see Liz be a advocate for accessibility. That is what is needed to make change. Folks in the privileged group of things need to be the ones speaking up!

Maybe, instead of condemning designers of airplanes, houses, etc, we should expect designers of wheelchairs, etc. to think about the limitations of existing structures, and design devices and prostheses so that they will work within the existing designs. That seems more efficient than redesigning and reconstructing everything to accommodate a very small segment of society. Maybe disabled people, instead of advocating for government mandates, should engage in entrepreneurial ventures to create devices that will enable them to overcome the barriers they face.

A mother’s love is the best. You can see the love for Hannah and Shane written all over her face. And she is so happy with their relationship. Now I know where Hannah gets her great personality from. I TOTALLY understand the frustration of handicap accessible places. My husband had a massive stroke at age 65 and I found out very quickly how difficult it was to get his wheelchair around. And DON'T DARE take the handicap spot without having a placard. I get really pissed off! He is now waiting for a power wheelchair, so I'm shopping for a wheelchair van. It's a whole new world and people have no clue how hard it is.
This was so healing to watch. “Nothing but happy memories” may this be true for all families some day. I love knowing families like this exist. Thank you ❤
It is quite apparent that Liz is a genuine, authentic person. It appears to be a family trait! I believe this is one of the many reasons she’s such a popular favorite among your viewers. People long for “real” people in their lives. She, and her family certainly fit that profile. Thanks fir having her on.

Even if she is his caretaker she wouldn’t get more than $1,000/month - which is nothing considering her probably has to go to several specialist appointments a month, buy medical supplies, etc. Whether you want to believe it or not, two people can fall in love and not do it for financial gain.

People look at others from the outside, instead of looking at others as characters. We are not the bodies we have but the soul that keeps this body going. Nothing wrong with him in my eyes. I do not deal with people who write negatively, they are demons. We live in a huge garden we have differences, we have soul, we have languages, taste, nationalities, colors, we are the most imperfect perfection..... we are the best creation.

That's truly amazing! As a wheelchair bound person I appreciate this so much and I wish more businesses thought and felt the same way! I mean honestly it's not a hard fix! A ramp, that's it, that's the easiest fix that most need to enjoy your business! So again thank you for making your business accessible!!

Hannah, your mom is so wonderful and accepting of your feelings, values and what's important to you. I WISH I grew up w/2 parents like that. From my perspective, it's something to really be grateful for. You're lucky to have that.

It shouldn't need to be. That's the problem. Disabled people worldwide have been failed. It seems like most of the progress we've made has been rolled back.
Here’s the thing......the world is largely, non-disabled. OF COURSE, we should try to make our world acccommodating to our disabled population as much as possible. But one cannot deny the simple fact that we live in a (mostly) non disabled world. Some grace needs to be given, and an understanding that, we need to improve access to disable people. There’s a certain amount of tolerance up must come into play here. And patience. I am a special education teacher, and I believe that we are making progress. We are getting there.
Please, no. The last thing I’d want to see as a disabled person is another video of “OMG LOOK AT ME BEING A GOOD ABLE-BODIED PERSON BECAUSE I TREAT DISABLED PEOPLE LIKE THE SNOWFLAKES I THINK THEY ARE”
Please, no, just no. We need more videos that don’t revolve around disability. You want acceptance? Show similarities, not differences.
Sooooo loved the question about accessibility!!! My mom was in a wheelchair my entire life. There were so many places she couldn’t come into. The best thing that happened was private companies that started a “free” transportation service in Chicago. It was actually paid by Medicaid and Medicare and she started being able to “take me places” in about 8th grade or so!!! I bought my first house thinking about accessibility and she was gone by then.
Shane you are so blessed to have loved ones around you. I am disabled and having fallen a few times, I know how terrifying it is. Thankfully you weren’t seriously injured and weren’t alone.
Everyone always asks what was Hannah's parents first thoughts on Shane, but what about Shane's parents first thoughts on Hannah? Especially considering his previous relationships that ended due to his disability.

This just reminded me of one of the most ANGERING moments of my high school career and even life. We had a choir competition at another high school and when we got there, we all realized there was NO WHEELCHAIR RAMP. And I had to carry one of my classmates up the stairs while our teacher carried up her wheelchair. At a public high school.
Most people would leave them on the ground and have the choir above them / behind them on the stage thinking they are “including them”…

Damn dude. I had one of the worst childhood experiences growing up with alcoholism, drug addiction, abuse, and neglect. If only everyone could have a mother as caring AND open minded as Liz, the world would be so entirely different. I can tell a lot about her by just watching this video. My daughter lost friends because her son was totally disabled, their lost she was the best mom
Then they weren't real friends to begin with! Now she has room in her life for genuine & kind people!
Then they wasn’t her true friends from the start. Friends support one another no matter what the situation is. So she’s better off and I’m sure one day they will regret the decision that they made. My daughter is disabled and I’m lucky to have a true friend that stick with me through thick and then. I’m sure one day your daughter will have that one true friend.
Same here. When my son was diagnosed with an incurable fatal neuromuscular disease (in addition to being severely autistic), all of my friends slowly backed away.
Kimberly Williamson I agree. My daughter doesn’t really have friends. It seemed when we found out about the disease (muscular dystrophy) her friends slowly left her side as it got harder for her to do things on her own. Now with her in a wheelchair that no one wanted to take the effort to hang out and do things with her and having to deal with someone in a wheelchair. It’s sad how you think you had friends but when you need them the most they aren’t there for you. It breaks my heart seeing my daughter with no friends and calls me her best friend. I’m honored that I’am but she really needed that one true friend. But she does have a boyfriend and he helps her so I’m happy that she does have a guy that loves her.

Thank you for your comment. I’ve observed that the hateful comments are not just from bitter lonely men . I’ve seen more than a few hateful comments and even a video from women being mean and nasty to them. I think many human beings in general are cynical that unconditional love exists given the state of the world we live n. But Hannah and Shane prove that Love alone prevails.

Oh god swim meets. I don't think people who haven't ever done competitive swimming understand what level of dedication it takes to attend meets all the time as both a swimmer and a parent. Getting up at 4, 5am, to get to the meet on time, packing for the meet, not getting home until midnight, all for 2-3 minutes in the water at most... it's hard. And to do that weekend after weekend, and to travel is ... just dedication. To the sport and to the child. I didn't even think about that until Liz mentioned it but dang. Go Liz.

@@shaneluke346 Hannah’s dad as well as Shane’s parents have been on videos before but they generally are private when it comes to social media and we should respect that.
