Shane Burcaw is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Aylward graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 670,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

My wife and I have been together for 15 years this year. Sadly she is disabled due to arthritis, pretty much confined to a wheelchair and requires assistance from a support worker when I'm at work. She's an inspiration to me though as she is able to still raise our children (both of which are also disabled) and allow them to continue to grow. At times I feel like I'm a bit useless as I'm not around as often as I wish I was (due to work mostly), but she assures me that I'm doing the best I can. I look at things quite differently than most people, our marriage is not conventional, our family is not normal, but honestly, I've seen normal and normal is boring. A true partnership with my wife and also my kids is what I truly value. 🙂

My story is just like yours basically. We met online, we were 55 both just divorced & NOT looking for a spouse at all. We dated 10 years & finally married in 2012. I wish we hadn't wasted those 10 years but both of us were scared of another failure. I was married 38 years he was married 34 years & neither was happy. God put us together for sure. He's been my long term care giver due to many health issues for me. I don't know what in the world I would do without him. He's my best friend, soul mate, and the absolute love of my life. Thank you Lord.

I think it is good to bring awareness to it rather than shy away from it and if people who followed my channel were getting harassed, I would wanna know. Me and my husband were in a long distance relationship for 3 years, Australia and Canada! We saw each other every 6 months while we were both in college. After 3 years in I had finished school and moved to Canada, we got married and have a beautiful daughter. It was definitely tough at times but we both worked really hard to make it work and are so grateful to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary next week.

@@nobodysperfect06 we actually met in person while he was traveling in Australia so we dated for a few months before he went back to Canada. So it was something that we both had to talk about and commit to.
@@courtneymurphy5832 I was kind of venting sarcastically because I've always hated the gender role that men are expected to talk to women first or make the first move in starting a relationship, I assume that's how you got every boyfriend
@@nobodysperfect06 I'm not quite sure what page you are on, you are contradicting yourself saying you don't like gender roles in a relationship and then making personal judgements about me based on my gender? My original comment was to show that long distance relationship can and do last and end in a long lasting relationship. I always hated when people would assume it would not work out for us.
