Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
When I was young I dated someone with disability and was bound by a wheelchair.
We had a lot of fun, played chess a lot. I admired his strength and acceptance of his limitations. We would have dinners together, studied, still in Highschool. His parents moved and that was the end of the relationship. We stayed in contact through letters and phone calls. His parents contacted me when he died and sent me his chess board. I never had a better friend.
Having fun is different then a relationship.

I don’t typically comment on videos, but I was reading through the comments and i just felt I had to. While I agree Hannah does seem like an amazing person, it bothers me SO much that people refer to her in a saintly way as though Shane doesn’t contribute in many other significant and profound ways to her life! Just because Shane has different abilities does not mean he does not bring just as much to Hannah’s life as she does to his!
That’s how I feel the more I read the comments, it’s in our nature I guess to just assume she’s got more to offer because he is disabled and can’t physically see what he brings to the table.
Physically she does and theres nothing wrong with that either.

I’m so glad you said this! You took the words out of my mouth. She fell in love with him not felt sorry for him and if so that would not make her kind. But it is beautiful that they can get past these challenges. Relationships have plenty of challenges on their own so this is a bit more but I’m sure there’s benefit for her as well.

My wife of 22 years had a stroke 3 1/2 years ago and now is paralyzed on her left side. I truly appreciate how you both deal with the everyday challenges of life. It wasn’t easy for me to take care of my wife early on but as time goes by things start to get better. God bless and stay happy. 😊
Get your wife physical therapy. I also have an stroke and was right paralyzed. I went through a year of therapy. I use also water therapy. If you see me now you do not say I was paralyzed. But i tell you it was every day with therapy.

What caused the stroke might I ask? It's one of my worse fear
God bless you for not only staying by your wife’s side but also for caring for her. That’s beautiful! A lot of people are selfish and leave the ones they love when times get hard but life isn’t guaranteed for ANY of us and the same thing could happen to any one of us. So always remember we are not invincible and what goes around comes around.

Nah dude he is funny and if you don't see that it's because you're clouded with negativity about him - which is obvious based on all of your comments. But it's forgivable. I don't think you understand what it is to overlook a physical shortcoming in someone you love because you respect them. Women are a lot better about doing this than men are because they value emotional safety in a relationship over just being with someone hot.

A person who still has a MIND in the absence of a functional body can STILL make quite a lot of use of themselves and offer a LOT to another human being.
His personality, his sense of humor, his looks (top and up is totally normal), and especially his humility and the humbleness created by living with a broken body, are ALL assets to HER.
He contributes PLENTY to their life together.

The fact that people are so shocked or amazed to see an interabled couple happily living out their lives together just goes to show that PEOPLE REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MARRIAGE IS… a marriage is about selflessly loving and serving each other, just like Hannah and Shane.
Most people wrongly think that marriage or a spouse will “complete” them, boost their ego, or make them happy… but really it’s about taking care of each other for the rest of our lives and being companions 💕❤️

My husband and I care for each other. But we also like to boost each others ego now and then (nothing wrong with that). It’s all part of making one another feel good whilst providing companionship.
I hope so much that my son has someone like this to love him and take care of him when he's older. This is something parents with disabled children dream about for their child

Long long story short...my sister was in accident at 12 years old. Coma and sent hime to basically die. Came out of coma after 6 months while at home. She had to learn everything all over. It left her severally handicapped. Every morning my job was putting on her foot braces. And the phrase "my toe, push it down". Took me back to our morning routine. After 50 years she sadly passed away last year. Thank you for taking me back. And may God Bless You and your family.

Les and Peace - My speculation is you're basing these two lives off things you've experienced, the definition of what you "perceive" or "believe" to be what love is, what you've seen others experience and the fact that love like theirs is "extremely rare", so it's understanding you think the way you do.
We're not them, (therefore we didn't have same experiences in life, we don't perceive, believe, feel, and think like them), and we don't live their lives to state "factually" if what they share together is satisfying to each or to know for certain what they think or emotionally feel.
However what they do share and type of love they do "present" in their videos is what is called "agape" love, "it's the highest form of love", it's not very common. These two love each other's spirits therefore it's beyond the measures of physical. The only way to get an understanding and glimpse is to be able to sit down and talk with them or anyone else that have their kind of dynamics and situations. Peace, good will and love to you both..

My wife left me since being disabled was too hard for her to handle. She just waited until we got married to leave. I’m sorry you’ve experienced similar. It’s a hard world out there, I’d rather be single than feel like anyone who likes me is an instant martyr.

Its absurd. I have a rare genetic condition that caused me a ton of health issues. I met my late husband at 13, we began dating at 14. By 19 i could no longer eat food and was kept alive with Intravenous nutrition through a picc line and became severely malnouished and emaciated. Like Eugenia Cooney emaciated. He was a healthy, attractive young man who became a firefighter, he could of had anyone but he wanted to be with me, even with all my health issues and limitations. Id be hospitalized for weeks at a time and he would move in to the hospital room, never leaving me for more than a few hours to take a shower or grab some food. I got to a point where walking from my room to the kitchen would make me so dizzy. I was getting constant blood infections, going into septic shock, it sucked. He never ever left. He was amazing.
You fall in love with someone for who they are. When we would be stuck in the hospital, we had so much fun because we were together. He didnt want to go out and party, he wanted to be with me. I felt so much guilt for this.
Im not saying my condition is equal to Shane's, although honestly he seems much more active and able than I was at my sickest. Im guessing that is because i was emaciated and in horrific pain 24-7.
My husband changed my picc line bandages, helped me set up my nightly TPN infusions, hook up my IV pole.
Sadly just as I was getting better, while I was hospitalized, he was in a tragic accident and died. He was my world and not a sociopath.

You called Hannah a sociopath. I am saying, if Hannah is a sociopath for dating and marrying someone with a health condition, would that make my late husband one too? 🙄 I know so many people with various disabilities who are married. Its not giving anyone false hope. There are plenty of people in this world, not everyone is superficial enough to not date a disabled person. You can find a abled body person to marry, but as the years go by, life can happen, you age, you get sick. Do you just leave? My aunts husband was just diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. She has a 15 year old and a 17 year old and now her husband cant even work. Forgets what hes doing, where hes going.
I just...maybe its because ive been very sick, because ive needed my spouse to help me do things when i was at my sickest, but your reasoning for thinking this is fake, strikes me as incredibly immature and naive. The human body is fragile and fickle. You may marry someone who seems perfectly healthy but life is unfair, diseases develop, accidents happen and if youve never loved someone so much, so deeply, that you cannot imagine life without them, that even if they were hit by a bus tomorrow and became paralyzed from the neck down, you would still love and stick by them, i feel really bad for you.
A girl i went to high school with, she has six children(including twin toddlers) and her husband was just diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. He went from being the primary income for the home, a man who played baseball and was active and coached his kids soccer team, to being confined to a wheelchair, having seizures, in awful pain, losing weight, dying and alls she wants is more time with him. In your mind, she should of left once he couldnt provide financially or walk? Like....i just dont see how you believe loving and committing a able bodied person, means they will remain that abled bodied person. At some point, disability or serious health issues will strike so if your loving someone for superficial reasons, your screwed
I imagine sharing their lives with us the viewers sometimes brings added joy to their lives as well and encourages them even on tough days!
The reality is that he has a personality that catches. It is a soul full of strength and positive energy and transmits it at all times. For me, they are two souls who met again at this time and their love goes beyond barriers and obstacles. Like two magnets. They attract and complement each other. Long live love.

I just discovered your channel and I have to say I appreciate this visual of a morning routine. Even without it I would’ve guessed this is how it would’ve been every morning. I think sometimes we take for granted the way life is for able body people. I was incapacitated for over a month and my caregiver, my husband, bend over backwards to make me comfortable and just exist on a daily basis. Once I was healthy. I will never forget the feeling of gratitude that I had for his compassionand selfishness, you are very much an inspiration on acceptance and life.

Such a beautiful relationship reminds me of a dear friend that has sadly passed away 2 years ago but she had MD and was totally bed ridden her hubby Mike took care of her but there was a lot more to their relationship than the “ physical stuff “ they got married in 1995 and had the most amazing relationship my prayer is that you two share many many years of love and happiness ❤❤❤❤

@@angelav4568 THANK YOU!!! it’s really harmful for the disabled partner; it elevates the abled partner to this pedestal whereas the the disabled partner is just left in the dust, and sometimes is seen to be a burden. it can really affect our mental health.

I have only recently discovered the 2 of you and have watched probably 4 videos and 2 podcasts and I want to tell you that I love your relationship. I also love Shane's sense of humor although sometimes I do have trouble hearing him. You both take life as you have to and just keep going. I'm sure you have some very scary and nerve racking moments, but you get through them together. Keep up the great work and the great videos coming.

There are good people out there, they’re just a bit hard to find! A Good relationship Has to be based on mutual respect, friendship, and love. ps also I was a caregiver for my dear, sweet, late wife for 34 months involving among other things a spinal cord injury, so I literally had to do everything for her, I cannot begin to tell you how close that brought me to her.
Still blows me away, the patience and love she has still. There are people that can't even stand when driving and having to slow down for a person who is turning, or a pet, or their elderly parents, or an infant etc... and here she is in love and willing to do anything for her man, including care giving💝

I work in the field of development disability and in all these years I've learned the human experience is universal. People want love, community, love, transportation. People who support people with dd love their jobs bc they love people. It's a great often fun profession and yes love is love. This couple seems to compliment eachother well. Shane has a great dry sense of humor.

One of my goldens takes an allergy pill each morning too. But he takes them without cheese or anything. He's so easy going! Hannah you are one of the most loving people I've ever seen.
she seems VERY happy and healthy. seems to me like Shane benefits her life too, in relationship wise. my mom married my able bodied father who was horrible to her and abused her and us kids. I can see that she genuinely seems happy and her face is full of light and love and happiness. that says a lot. a lot of people choose partners that can be considered settling. i dont think hannah settled with her choice, and I’m happy for her and proud of her.

Nice to see something like this. When I worked for people that become or were born disabled, both had different, even strong opinions about the spouse being the caregiver or not. Personally, I would rather be cared for by my stud muffin and I would rather be the one to give him his coffee or have a say in his skin care. So much LOVE!!!
