Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

As a parent of a daughter with cerebral palsy and an autistic son. I thank you for loving him for who he is. Love has no boundaries. This is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my entire life.
Yes! My 4 year old has CP and epilepsy... I hope she finds this love one day that they share. Also being with my husband that's disabled, I love that Hannah still makes Shane do stuff with her like cook and work, etc. Instead of becoming the "caretaker" role which is really easy to step into when your in that kind of relationship... She plays many roles in their relationship and does it so effortlessly. I only hope one day that my daughter can find someone like that that can boost her confidence in not being taken care of but knowing she's able and capable to make her continue to grow and push her to be the best self she can be.
This is the most beautiful love story. My daughter has lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Addison’s disease and my son-in-law serious Addison’s and wounds as the result of war. Their is so much love between them and neither has become the caretaker of the other. The are living their life together, facing everything together, conquering obstacles together.
*waves* I'm a parent of two sons, one with cerebral palsy and one with autism too!

As someone who's disabled as well I hope to find a love like this. You can just see it on your faces how much you two are in love and are an absolutely stunning couple with hearts of gold and hearts filled with love. I admire both of you. I'm disabled and thought no one would love me or find me beautiful until I met my husband 25 years ago. He told me once that he never saw my disability ever. He just saw a beautiful woman who was the one for him. We both love each other tremendously. As I'm getting older and need more help he tells me that he married me in sickness and in health and that he takes his vows seriously. I wouldn't want it any other way. Hugs to you both.

As a wife of a disabled husband AND a Mother of a disabled child, I completely agree with you!!! I give it to Disney that they've been widening their horizons since years back but their growth is still pretty slow... I hope one day they do make movies about disabled children (and it was okay how you said it, I get you meant it from a place of love and the term was correct)... Though kids and adults focus so much of the disabled part and it gets made fun of in our society now, we need to start really normalizing this that it's okay... Hopefully my 4 year old can grow up and see a disabled Disney princess and can feel the love from that knowing she is more than ABLE to become a princess even though she already is in my eyes 💜 But I absolutely LOVED your comment.

We had been married for 14-yrs when i fainted- breaking my neck and I became paralyzed. We just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary last July, and its a wonderful life - i just know that you two will enjoy many happy years together - unless of course Shane tires of Hannah’s arresting beauty or Hannah becomes immune to Shane’s clever wit and endless charm. Howdy from Texas. I want to say how lovely it is to see 2 people actually in love with each other and it really touches my heart. I am a male in my mid 60's and retired from a few decades working law enforcement and do not easily show emotion but I have watched several of your videos the past few days and have been openly crying tears of joy and laughter at the way you treat each other, play off each others actions and show the signs of true love to each other. I love u both so much! My brother became a quadriplegic on a vent from the neck down at the age of 26. He became extremely depressed. After watching some of ur videos, He started to have some hope again. U even gave me so much hope. I saw a change in him after he watched ur channel. So thank u so much for sharing ur beautiful lives w us bc u never know the difference it can be making in ppls lives. He was my best friend, we were very close. I was also his nurse after much training but sadly he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away 2.5 years ago. Still, thank u for helping to make his life even a little better! U guys are a wonderful couple and I’m so happy for u both! May u continue to share love and happiness for many, many more years to come.

@@martitagzz I don't believe it's fake. But as a disabled person myself, this woman is incredibly special. 9 out of 10 women don't even look at you as a romantic option when you are in a wheelchair. That's just a fact of life. It just is. That he (with his rather severe disability) found her is a miracle that happens very rarely. But it does happen.

@@ct1762 I agree chemistry is important. Chemistry is what 1st attracts us to someone. I find a sense of humor contributes somewhat to that. After the initial honeymoon phase is over, it's being in agreement as to what 2 people want for thier futures that matters also.
In tears. I've been married to my partner for 28 years. Because of circumstances, we never got to have our wedding party like we wanted to have. It's not really a big deal and our relationship has been mostly wonderful, but there is a sadness to never have the chance to celebrate our love with friends and family. I'm glad you got to have that.
Do it now!! My best friend and her boyfriend moved far away and got married in a park the next week with just a justice of the peace. 10 years later they threw a big wedding like party to share with their friends and family. I got to go stay several days beforehand to help just like a real wedding and it was awesome. Just do it. Celebrate your relationship, family and friends. ❤️ You are worth it.

Oh my god I literally started crying. People have told me that “when you know you know” and I’m 29 and finally in that position. I never thought it was going to happen. While there are always thing to work through, the undeniable love is evident. The way you both look at each other is the way we look at each other. Truly inspirational. Me too, I have Muscular Dystrophy and I have the same kind of humor towards it. I was like well least he has a sense of humor. Some disabled people I've met are bitter because of it. You have to maintain a sense of humor or you're going to be a miserable and bitter person. I can tell he and I would get along, we would be great friends because we have the same time of sense of humor and attitude towards it.

As a Mom of a disabled Daughter, and Wife of a disabled Husband, I've got to say that Hannah juggles so many roles and does it not only gracefully but effortlessly. I have no clue how she does it and stays so beautiful. But what people don't see that the camera captures is that Hannah is not only madly in love with Shane, but of course she's his caretaker and ultimately bestfriend. All I could see in that wedding video was 2 bestfriends sharing an amazing loving bond that's so strong that it's unbreakable!! I never comment on these things. Never cry for other ppl's joy but I have tears streaming. Ur description of ur 1st flights brought back so many emotions. I had the same thing, me from Quebec Canada him from Kansas US and at first sight we knew that was it. Never got the big wedding. Disability, paralysis and years of hospitals got in the way. How can all those haters not see, not understand how genuine ur relationship is? Its so clearly obvious. I've never been so happy for ppl I don't know. Here's to many MANY happy years.

Hey you guys, just wanted to say that you guys are an inspiration to many including me. I was born with Cerebral Palsy left hemiplegia. Being born with a disability tends to be a challenge at times especially when finding that special someone who will love you for who you are no matter the disability you have. However, one day there will be that special someone who will actually love you for who you are. Thanks for sharing this video as it has lifted me and my hopes in finding that special someone!!!
