Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Guys I hope you don't find this too weird. I found your channel on
RUclips 4 days ago and I have spent many hours going through your

comments about your stuff. I'm a 70 year old male with cerebral palsy.
Your videos have been a review of the life I've lived, and the
challenges I've faced, like NOTHING I have ever encountered before. I
have sat here for hours shouting at the computer screen "Yes, that
happens. Yes, that's how it works, Yes, I've heard that, Yes that has

I want to defend the crying older lady. That generation was forced to discard or place children with disabilities in foster/residential homes. They were told those kids would be a burden and have no meaningful life. So when they see "normalcy" it gives them hope and love and renews them. They are just like "o my god this can happen". We are friends with an interable couple and the old ladies at church would always gush over them. And one of them told me how her brother had been put in an institution. So while it is "weird" I think for many its just the realization that they were told wrong and may have had some kind of trauma/stigma with disabilities.

I have a stepson that was born with a bilateral arm deformity and a lot of people stare. My son would get really defensive for him but my stepson wasn’t bothered so I had to have a talk with my son about saving his irritation for times when Seth was upset and not making him upset when he isn’t offended. People are curious but some are rude and there is no excuse for that.

Hi. I know you commented 11 months ago.A female surfer lost her arm from a shark attack. She went back surfing. Most of the time it's adults that are
ignorant as of just being rude and just not informed how to ask questions. Awhile back Mom and I were waiting in line for the bathroom in. Florida. Woman taps me on the shoulder and asked to the back of my head " What happened to you?" I turned around and said " I'm faking it!" Loud enough my Mom infants of me told me to be nice. That was about a dozen times people asked me in a matter of days. Sometimes I felt like making a great story up. Let them be inticed with the B S. , then say only kidding ! There are so many people that got happily married that don't have legs And arms. Little stumps for arm and has hands and no legs but feet all but coming out of their pelvis. I told him I didn't think he needed another drink. He says "no I'm okay, I just fell off a truck", so I tell him I'm not going to be able to serve him. His friend then explains to me that years ago he fell off of a truck causing a brain injury and showed me the scar on his head from where they had to do surgery. I literally wanted to die, I felt horrible ans paid for his beer myself. Luckily they were all were very nice about it and even had a good laugh.

My oldest daughter has a bachelor’s from UCI and my son was a computer science prodigy at 12 years old- building computers from scratch as well as full animation and coding websites. With that being said I find it sad as well as scary that people are so shallow and flawed that they feel that because Shane has different "ABILITIES" than they do that he is incapable of finding love and having someone genuinely love him for EXACTLY WHO HE IS like he loves them FOR WHO THEY ARE, please know that you are not the one with the issue AT ALL the person with that extremely flawed perception is 10000000% the problem, in which case I pray they get help and are able to change their way of thinking and seeing life! You are both truly beautiful and amazing souls, with that being said you are both helping people with open minds as well as open hearts to have the incredible opportunity to see two beautiful souls with different " ABILITIES" as well as totally different ways of living and experiencing life, be perfectly capable of falling head over heals in love, showing support to each other, loyalty, trust and respect to one another for just being who they are! I am so grateful for human beings like the two of you, because you are helping others peoples souls, minds, and their over all person to grow and learn to look beyond the physical and to find the true beauty within a person! I can not imagine the mean and awful back lash that you must receive on social media from the sad, miserable, or ignorant people sitting on their electronics passing judgement and dishing out useless, mean, and hurtful criticism! I pray that one day my 5 children are able to find a beautiful, genuine, and amazing love like the two of you have been able to find I pray for that daily! You are both truly inspirational and incredible, I am so thankful to be able to watch you both grow as individuals as well as team and a couple!!!! Thank you for all that you are doing regaurdless of all of the hateful things people say, you are both doing something truly amazing by just simply showing those with different "ABILITIES" that there is hope for them in finding someone that will love them forall that they are as an individual with no regard of what others think about it! I just found y’all and I’m loving your channel. So much positivity is refreshing to see!! I feel ya on the bullying topic. My brother has CP and we are in our late 50’s. Kids used to point at him a lot too and it was awkward for him. I’ve watched, as he’s gotten older, how much he has become more comfortable handling those awkward moments with children. He will answer their questions. The thing that irritates me, are the adults who either ignore their children, like they didn’t just say something so rude, rather than gently correcting them and educating them. I think some folks just get used to living in their own bubble and don’t know what to say. One of the best things that has come about with time, is increased accessibility for mobility challenged people. RUclips and the internet is such a great vehicle for raising awareness. Y’all are a bright spot on here and I am looking forward to watching more and more!! Blessings from Texas!!

I have a reverse story for you.
When my grandaughter was about 3 and a half we took her to the mall. There was a woman pushing an older lady in a regular conventional wheelchair. My grandaughter stood starining at the wheelchair.
The woman pushed the chair next to Where we were standing and very nastily bent toward my gradaughter and not nicely said, " Rude child. Do you not know it is rude staring at people that are disabled" she scared my grandaughter and pissed me off. For one thing, my grandaughter was little more than a baby.
I looked at the woman and as nice as I could I said, "She is staring at the wheelchair, Her father is paralized and this chair is nothing like the one he has. His is low to the ground and he moves it by pushing the wheels,"
I seen the woman could move her legs, she must have just had a medical condition that made it hard for her to walk that much, my grandaughters father was paralyzed from just above the naval.
The lady just turned red and walked away. No apology. It made me furious.

People are strange and maybe you are judging as well, you see I am DISABLED AND CAN MOVE MY LEGS BUT CAN'T WALK. So don't assume that an individual who can move their legs aren't disabled. The social security administration agrees I'm disabled. Just as you found the caregiver offensive and rude, which she was, but when you love someone who is in a wheelchair and DISABLED you become extremely sensitive to your loved ones feelings. Perhaps they had a rough day or your 3 yr old is tall and she thought she was older. Who knows but PLEASE REMEMBER SOME DISABILITES ARE NOT VISIBLE AND SOMEONE PARALYZED IS NO MORE OR LESS DESERVING OF ONES COMPASSION. ALL DISABILITIES ARE DESERVING OF KINDNESS. you are passive aggressive and It is evident in your writing.

Anyway I was in the city one day and I couldn’t find the building I needed to go for, yet another, job interview. There was a man, probably in his 50s there, walking the other way, so in passing I asked if he knew where the ANZ bank was as the bank was the bottom floor of the building. The man proceeds to drop to the ground, on one knee, I was a bit stressed at this point, thinking am I about to cop a random proposal, and he gave the directions, promptly, to my guide dog. My dog stood there wagging her tail slowly, something she does when confused.

He still has the same sense of humor! It puts my own disability in perspecitve and it gives me a really nice feeling reading his younger voice but also knowing that one day he won't have the short life expectancy he was expecting, he will have true love with Hannah(and of course Chloe) and the Jaco Arm to help out if he ever gets his head stuck or needs to open a door. As someone with a chronic illness I have struggled with feelings of being unlovable. I think many of us struggle to know we are loved with all of our imperfections and we get these ideas in our heads that some qualities are less lovable than others. I think the woman in your first story may have just got a reality check that everyone deserves love and she may or may not have realized that she was incorrect about some of her internal belief systems and they have been why she was so shocked. I imagine there are things in her life that have led her (and many of us) to believe we are not good enough in life just as we are. Seeing how wrong we are about who deserves love gives us hope that we are lovable too.

Depends on the liquor laws of the area. I live in Texas, and here a minor can consume alcohol in a public setting (such as a restaurant) IF AND ONLY IF their parent is present. So if the waiter thought that Shane was Hannah's son, he would have been a) willing to get him some alcohol as long as Hannah (the supposed "parent") was present, and b) been willing to get Shane a lollipop if requested. Depending on local liquor laws, of course.

@@dianeaishamonday9125 Yes ma'am, you are correct. However, this wasn't at a restaurant. A minor can't go in the store and purchase beer. And this was the case here, except it was a drive thru store.

I buy & wrap my own gifts to myself so I have something under the tree. I am still surprised when I open the package. Typically from my 2 dogs to myself. Are you getting the Noreaster that is hitting your side of the states? Your BFF from Montana. 😊

I am doing that this Christmas, too. Just called the local bookstore and asked them to wrap what I will buy this afternoon, it felt a bit weird but the bookstore owner just laughed like a happy Santa. And I believe I will be surprised, too, because when I looked in my bag of gifts I squeezed a gift and was like, What IS this!? haha. So it will be me & my cat. Merry xmas!

Love is so beautiful, and i have not known love in 5 years since I gave up on love so that i do not become a burden on anyone with my blood disorder. but when i see you two it fills my heart with joy and I found my self, I love to see people in love and happy, it full fills my heart, it gives me strength, it helps me to know there is a god. Love is love, a girl with a girl, boy with boy man and woman, different needs and nationalities, that is what true love is expressing and no shame in the game. You guys are young and serve a great strong example to the world. My daughter is about her age and my son is about his age and my daughter is married and my son is too and he has a baby...... so when i see you both, is like as if either she was my child or he was my son and i learned to sincerely love you both as my kids. I respect the both of you, honestly such great great people.

I hope you go back and don't hold the bad experience of one family, who probably are not even locals, against the whole town. My hubby is from there and we were married there 25 years ago. We would love to show you some of our favite spots!
