Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G Review

- Lisa Gade reviews Samsung’s new more affordable “fan edition” Galaxy S20 Android smartphone, the S20 FE 5G. It’s priced at $699 (though already discounted to $599) and is available in 6 colors. The phone has a 6.5” FHD+ flat OLED display with an Infinity selfie camera and fingerprint scanner. It has a “glasstic” back that’s plastic but made to look (err, somewhat) like matte glass. The S20 FE runs Android 10 with One UI 2.5 on the same Snapdragon 865 processor (Exynos in some countries, 4G model is Exynos, Samsung hasn't provided us with much detail about worldwide CPU distribution) as the rest of the S20 family. It has 6GB RAM, 128GB storage and a microSD card slot. The phone has 12MP ultra-wide, 12MP main and 8MP telephoto cameras on the back, is IP68 water resistant and is available on most carriers as well as unlocked. It supports low, mid and mmWave 5G.
Get it at Samsung.com: shop-links.co/...
Get it on Amazon: amzn.to/2G7ldan
All, sorry Samsung didn't provide us with a specific list of regions and countries outside the US that get the Exynos CPU. They simply said some regions outside US will get Exynos. Check Samsung's website for your country or your carrier's to see which processor is sold in your country.
All regions that sell 5G version, it is SD865 and 4G models are Exy990. Not market dependent in that terms.

Oh Man.. I like your shirt... where can I buy that?
Hi Lisa, are you able to confirm the model number on your review unit and the amount of ram/storage on it please? There seems to be a confusion on the amount of ram on the US 5G model on Samsung US site as they don't specify on their pre order page.
I have been saying now for years, I wish phone manufacturers would use plastic again to make the backs. Just because it is plastic doesn't mean it is cheap, frankly I'm tired of feeling like I need to treat my device like jewelry because they make them all out of glass.
or have someone finally invent glassteel that was spoken about in Star Trek: The Voyage Home.
Fully agreed. I would even forgo the wireless charging if the phones were more durable and made from metal like they were a few years ago. It is insane that you buy a phone for nearly 1500 EUR that looks beautiful, but all of that beauty is always hidden by a fugly case. Why not just make it rugged from the beginning? In the end a phone is carried everywhere, placed everywhere, used everywhere (including bathroom) and the chance of it falling is rather high.

And how!! Who ever thought glass was good for phone backs??
I really loved my Moto G4 because the back was made of flexible rubber coated plastic and it sure took a beating... if only we could have flagship specs with the kind of durability these older phones had..
Accidents happen and even the most careful such as myself eventually have to deal with it lol

Really? I thought she talks way to fast and her speech isn't very clear. Great review though.
Lisa’s teeshirt game is always on point.
John Dienst or incredibly personal.
Yunno!
I wish people could get over this glass back issue. Once fitted with a case no one will see if its glass or glastic. Give me the glastic back anyday if it means i pay less for the phone.
The back looked fine when I checked it out at Costco. Unfortunately the front camera’s reflective look makes it hard to ignore. It’s a shame because I would have bought this otherwise 😡. It makes a big difference when watching videos. A black selfie camera would have been better.
@@phillippascual9959 should I buy this soon?
😂😂😂 how about we need more interesting phones being made again because all of the new phones are the same and boring lol
better battery life, better price and with the 120hz.Let's go s20FE >>>note 20
This is my exact thinking.
Most importantly much more affordable
Different category, dude. The s spen is very valuable to some people, like signing your rent or bills and etc from your phone.
@@fyahburn2349 Which is exactly why Samsung didn't have any problem with overpricing it like hell. If you want the Note 20, wait a couple months
@@xxirion As far as I know they've released this in every market with the Snapdragon, but like Europe there's possibly a cheaper 4G Exynos and a higher priced 5G Snapdragon
As an Australian I'm going for this solely for the fact that they finnaly decided to put a Snapdragon is our 5G variant
If I didn't already have an S20+ I'd be doing the same thing.
Same already ordered from Samsung :)
Yeah for European Samsung enthusiasts, this is big news.
People in the US are excited about it, but I think a lot of that is with the marketing. This is pretty much in line with the S10 light and note 10 light series. In fact those are priced even more aggressively low.
but, I don't think they have dex and they're just not really supported by Samsung like the newer ones. We're they grandfathered in to 3 year update promise.
David Lee compared it to A. series. I guess a lot of it comes down to how bad that you want a strong refresh rate and Samsung branding
Actually I prefer plastic back than the fragile glass back. Now I can not use a case 👍
wow people with sense do exist
Agreed. Glass backs are not premium, they're stupid.
I'm in the opposite camp to me plastic is horrible, thin flimsy and scratches within seconds of being used. Sure glass cracks but don't drop your phone or monkey grip it like I do then you won't ever worry about cracking the back.
@@BoxCarBoy12 Corning does not like your comment.
Same here. I prefer a plastic or metal back. The phones I used in the early 90s were very tough, they would bounce off hard floors with barely a scuff.
whoops doops doops
the 4g version ships with the exynos, the 5g one features the sd865 everywhere, which is a huge yes yes for europe because they could not get an s20 phone with a snapdragon before
also i am quite sure that the telephoto is 8, not 12mp
4g version is cheaper...it still a good option even with exynos...it's not that bad...bad compared to sd 865
aditya ramesh the preorder put the at the same price,so the sd 5G version, still better.
"We're gonna look at it now."
Iconic line👌
If my year-old S10e weren't still awesome, durable, and if it didn't possess all the software functionalities of the S20 FE, I'd get the S20 FE right away. The FE camera set-up is drool-worthy though. It's a great buy!
Great review very informative! Thank you!
Hows the battery life of your S10e?
@@deebzeal8204 I'm a moderate user (occasional RUclips vids, email checks, browsing, Instagram) so it lasts about 10-11 hours.
I'm looking to upgrade. Have the 10e as well but battery doesn't last the whole day for me with moderate use ~5hrs.
I just bought one yesterday and update to one ui 3. I love the phone very much
Solid straight forward review
Good idea and price point for this phone specially since the 5G version is snapdragon everywhere. However locally (thailand) the S20 is cheaper than the FE, and the S20+ is only 40 USD more than the FE.. So for realistic pricing differences between the ranges i think we have to wait 3/4 months. Local pricing : FE 20990, S20 18990, S20+ 22500. For preorder you get the 5G version for 20990, after that 22990. They will sell zero phones here unless they reduce to 15990. Ill keep my Oneplus 7 Pro a little while longer. Thanks for the review, fantastic as always :-)
First time here to this channel - LOVE the t-shirt - new subscriber...
Nice one Lisa and .Yeah... no glass on the back is beneficial . I was hoping some reviewer would talk about how bright this phones gets and how the Taptic engine is.
I got an S9+ renewed over a year ago for $350 on amazon and Im actually trading it in at the Samsung store for $350 towards the S20 FE and I got a $70 giftcard for samsung accessories. seemed like a no brainer to me, now I just have to wait for it to get here. If you don't have a trade in, Amazon is the way to go with the $100 discount
That's a good deal I did the same with iPhone 6s
Hey Lisa good to see you another great review hope you doing well
You've been helping me choose my Samsung phones since the Galaxy S (Captivate). Just wanted to thank you for your time, I really appreciate your very informative reviews!
Would this be a good upgrade from iPhone 8 Plus? Seriously considering it. Thanks for your reviews!
Yep... If you never dropped your phone and cracked it in a while 2020 is here to deliver...

My Note8 flew off my motorcycle at about 60mph and I found this deal at Coatco for the s20 fe 5g for $349...Definitely NOT disappointed.
Great review! This phone is better than the Note 20 regular because it has a micro SD slot and cheaper. I'm glad you're not under the embargo. I'm pretty sure all the other reviewers will be out this week.
Reminds me of the approach they took w the S10e, which I preferred over the full S10 flagships, and am still using
Michael Dietsche Yes in terms of price, but keep in mind that the FE is a _much_ larger device than the S10e, which will be a turn-off for some people.
I’d say that the FE is more analogous to the Galaxy S10 Lite (which was way overpriced when it first released, and as a result didn’t sell that well) - except that the FE is a FAR superior phone to the S10 Lite.
It’s very hard to beat the FE @ $599 given its specs & feature set; it may in fact be my next phone since the specs and build quality of the upcoming Pixel 5 seem disappointingly underwhelming. 😩🤣
Although I love this phone for the price, a real 'fan edition' phone would have a headphone jack.
I got the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5g, and it´s actually better than I expected it to be! The battery life is great. The resolution is great. The FPS on mobile games is great. I really have no issues with this phone. (Other than that the phone case selection for it is rather slim). But yeah, that´s all there really is to say. It´s just a great phone.
The telephoto camera of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE should be superior to the S20 / S20+:
Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ does not have a real telephoto camera. According to notebookcheck it has a zoom factor of only 1.06x, while the S20 FE has a zoom factor of about 3.0x.
The S20 has a telephoto camera with 64 MP, an f/2.0 aperture and a sensor size of 1/1.72-inch.
The S20 FE has a telephoto camera with 8 MP, an f/2.0 aperture and a sensor size of ~1/4.5-inch.
So if I use the S20 / S20+ in 3x zoom (i.e. cropping into the sensor), there should be 1/9 of the original sensor size and pixels left (a bit more because of the small real zoom factor). So you end up at 64 / 9 = 7.11 MP with a sensor size of 1/16.0-inch.
In conclusion, the S20 FE should have significantly less noise starting at a 3x zoom than the S20 / S20+.
Great review and love rhe t-shirts and the consistent depth of coverage.
This is literally the way forward, no compramizes here over the s20. The glass is irrelevant, as you said you anyway cover it almost instantly. Resolution is nice, but honestly not a huge difference at these screen sizes. Brightness, refresh and colours worth more than resoly
My ☁️ red FE is a beastly phone. Amazon Black Friday deal, 549.00 bucks. Folks, it's no-brainer time. The 865 is blazing fast. The 120hz display, speed wise & clarity of the screen is fan-tab-ulous. You can't go wrong at this price? Is the S20+ 6hundred bucks better, HELL NO, Lisa, great review!
Actually all FE 5G models are Snapdragon even overseas. Just the LTE is exynos
Not for India as far as I know, looked at comments of some videos and many people are complaining cuz there is no 5G version for India, but for that price I personally think Exynos is acceptable
@@chowjunyi963 Do you even have 5G in India yet?
@@franklingoodwin 5G isn't in my country as well, only for 1 or 2 states but Samsung still offered the 5G version
@@chowjunyi963 They probably should've only offered the Exynos in India (or given the choice of Exynos with 4G and Snapdragon with 5G like they do here in the UK). 5G probably won't really be a thing most Indians will be able to use until 2024 at the earliest. I live in London in the UK, we've had it over a year now and most places still don't have 5G reception (and most of the places that do have spotty coverage)
@@franklingoodwin 5G isn't in my country as well, only for 1 or 2 states but Samsung still offered the 5G version
Lisa you've got it wrong. If you get the 5G variant wherever you get it in the world you get the Snapdragon 865 this is why those RUclipsrs in Europe are so stoked as a fan edition this should have a headphone jack but it doesn't number three it isn't the same camera as the s20 ultra it has similar features but the resolution is lower. You don't have 10 times optical zoom but you do have three times. The 4G variant of this phone is running the exynos chip the 5G is running the Snapdragon it does have reverse wireless charging and wireless charging even though it's plastic. I'd rather have the headphone jack than wireless charging if it's a fan edition it should have a quad DAC. It only has 1080 resolution screen but as it is at 120 hertz. For the same price you can have a note 9 that has a higher PPI has a higher resolution screen and has a headphone jack.
I bought this one like a month ago. I was using a glass back phone(S6 Edge) before it. I hate protective cases so never using them. And I don't understand why people bragging about "Plastic" back when they are covering them with thick low quality plastic cases. I'm very glad I choose this one cause I hate fingerprints on the back with my old phone.
Also In real life it doesn't look like cheap. It is really like a premium looking plastic. Easy to hold than glass. Less weight.
More like old Nokia phones like N9 and Lumia 1020 which I used both and loved their polycarbonate feeling.
I think I'm getting old so I'm not into the new and flagship phones anymore. As a designer myself they need to look good. But they also needs to be usable.
That's why I used S6 Edge for years. I'm only using social media apps and e-mail so even that phone can do anything. Unfortunately battery lost it's performance and power button lost it's spring.
Btw. Samsung gifted Galaxy Buds+ free with this phone in my country so it was a nice bonus. Because the lack of the headphone jack I'm thinking about buying the buds anyway(Old sony headphones are crying at the back :D).
My phone came with the exynos chip but I'm not playing any game on my phone(PC Master Race) so speed wise it is really fast. I think you can't tell the difference unless you play games.
120hz display is fantastic. As a 144hz monitor user 60hz is getting old and kinda slow mo for me :D
Backplate charging is awesome. I already have a Samsung Gear S2 Classic(For me the best looking. New ones are too bulky) and with the buds addition that feature is a must. All phones need to something like that in 2020.
Finally yes front camera has a metalling looking ring around it but it's not too obvious looking. I already forget about it.
Bought it few days ago and love it, same one❤👍😊
The upcoming S21 should use Exynos globally with Cortex X1 cores.
We all know Exynos can outperform others if they really wanted to
After replacing 5 glass backcover of my note 9, I'm glad that we have choose now.
Butterfingers
My note 9 is the first time ive had issues. 3 screens. Yup, larger, slippery and butterfingers.
This device especially hits the Pixel 5 right in the chops.
Lisa I've been watching you for years. This is my first comment. So I had a Samsung Note 8 multiple issues with the camera. Sprint was nice enough to opt to give me a S9 plus instead. My phone is paid off. I'm itching to upgrade but I know I can hold off another year at most. If you were me and were going to upgrade now... What model would you get? My scenario I can't afford the full retail price it would have to be paid over time with Sprint aka t-mobile .... What model would you upgrade to coming from an s9plus. And fyi my ultimate favorite phone will always be my HTC One M7.... I still have my HTC Nexus 9 still chugging along no issue from 2014😊. I'm still holding out HTC will do one last chance at survival.
I would pay 7-900 USD to add a 3.5mm, dual sims & ssd, and Snapdragon (Region where I live it's random between Exyncrap & Snap).
I impressed with features and price. Not looking forward to taking out a second mortgage for the Note 20 Ultra for expandable memory and a stylus. A Note 20 basic would be adequate but it does not come with expandable memory.
i'll be picking up my S20 FE 5G UW from verizon tomorrow .
it's only gonna add $18 to my monthly bill .....
it'll be replaceing a pixle 2XL that still works perfectly fine but google decided to not support it already ! :( ....
thanks for sharing your experience . take care , jeff
You are mistaken when u say that the Snapdragon is only for the US market. For the FE, there will be 2 variants around the world. Snapdragon for 5G editions for where 5G is available & exynos for 4G editions. In my region we are getting both.
I really enjoyed your review...the reverse wireless button usually has to be enabled..once you swipe down and to the left..you will see buttons available that you can add to your phone
Actually, it's not the same set of Cameras as the S20.
It has 12MP Wide
12MP Ultrawide and
8MP Telephoto Camera and it's not all
Exynos in all International Markets, when you get the 5G Model you'll get the
SD865.
So that's that.
Even though I got a good deal for my s20+ with an s9 trade in. Flagships are way too expensive. whenever I upgrade again. I'll wait for the "fe" edition.
yes i agree. i recently just got a note 20 ultra for a very good deal. still i paid $800 plus tax on the full 1400 after s9 trade in. its still too damn high!
What deal did you get with s9 trade in? I have an s9 and am looking get the best deal for the s20+
@@christiandavidmerz you can only score that deal if you have Verizon unfortunately
@@christiandavidmerz normally it's $300 but I got a $400 "email exclusive" and In top of that Samsung was giving out $300 akg headphones which sound absolutely amazing. As a regular S20 owner I am quite upset. Luckily I didn't pay $1,000 I paid about $740 after combining a bunch of discounts, but still. Better battery life, bigger screen, better camera (real 3x optical vs hybrid) on the FE for $600. I'm miffed not gonna lie.
Great review, as usual. Love the shirt. Thank you Lisa.
Good review. I have one of these and like it. I'm thinking this might be the last high-end phone I'll be able to get with a MicroSD card slot. Manufacturers need to realize a lot of users want that feature. I didn't notice your shirt until the end. :)
Watching on my white S20 FE 5G. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of 3.5mm audio but I bought an adapter so I can use my headphones which I prefer over my Bluetooth earphones. Aside from that, it's a great phone - one of the best at this price point. Also bought one for my wife.
It's really a bummer that a "fan edition" phone lacks a 3.5mm jack. 😒👎

I have an A20 (miss my old P10), I really want to upgrade to this but I am not sure if I should get this or stay with my A20 for another year or two.
Depends what you're doing with your phone. If you'd like gaming, high-end camera and superb performance, then go for it if you can afford it. If A20 can suffice for your needs, no need to upgrade. But I feel like this phone will be a hit, I'm upgrading to it.

The Samsung Galaxy A21 features a good display (In terms of the aspect ratio and punch hole) paired with the underwhelming Helio P35 chipset. Hi I have the S10 lite 4g from 2019 with snapdragon 855 in dark blue, great phone, but no telephoto no 5g only 60 hertz refresh screen mono speaker no IP 68, but a great phone with great battery at 4500 mah, so I’m gonna definitely get the S20FE 5g in a couple of months time when Samsung has an offer on it, great video thanks peace ✌️
"I'm not a Samsung shill". LOL! Excellent and to the point as always Lisa. I was comparing this with the A71 - same battery but a beefer CPU. Interestingly though one area where Samsung cheapens things is with the BT spec. The A71 and this share the same spec where the Note 20 Ultra has extra features. Meanwhile the Pixel 5 and One Plus 8 and Nord have similar specs as the Note 20 Ultra. Amazing where they decide to cheapen things. I think the FE colors are nice generally and agree with the plastic back to save money esp when I throw a case on it.

Was hoping for the usual in depth review that Lisa usually does as I ordered this phone. For example It's a "super amoled" not a "dynamic amoled" yet still supports HDR+? HDR support in general has been useless outside any app besides RUclips. This is the first galaxy that I don't have with a headphone jack. Would like to know if I can use an adapter. Hoping 5g will help to stream hi res music.
My only complaint and I cannot believe no one actually mentioned it is the fast that this phone only has 6GB of RAM, even on the 5G version. It will be enough for most tasks today, but I do not think it is future proofing this phone.
Yes! Always the best reviews without any of the pomp and circumstance. You are a gift to RUclips, Lisa. Can't wait to see what you think of the new Pixels, too. My Pixel 4 is burning a trade-in hole in my pocket. Oh, and another great shirt!

newfnshow031 Wait for the Galaxy A72 and see if that mid range will have 3.5mm, if it does it is a winner! I'm looking at either the Samsung S20 FE 5G or an iPhone 12 (upgrading from iPhone 6S+). I've had Samsung phones in the past, and they were great at first, but they never seemed to last past 12-18 months. Either the battery was shot and couldn't be replaced, or the software/hardware became glitchy and bricked the phone for any practical use other than as a paperweight. So, I left Samsung and tried an iPhone. It's not as fun/flashy as the Samsung, but after 4 years it's still running like new. Anybody think Samsung's reliability has caught up in the past 4 years or so?
I had a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate years ago and swore I'd never use a Samsung phone again. Typing this now on my S9 that I've had since like May of 2018. About to pass it down to my daughter once my S20 FE shows up.
Samsung is at the top of the phone game right now.
@@joojoobomb - Yeah, I ended up getting the S20 FE myself and it's been pretty good thus far. Hope it lasts a while.
Ok this is my next phone. RIP Note 8
I wish Samsung made an equivalent of non-pro version of iPhone or Pixel a series. One or two cameras as good as the ones on the flagships but with plastic body, flat screen etc.
Its a real shame the pixel 5 and maybe the 4a 5G are allegedly the same price as the FE. To me there's no question, I would get the FE over either of those two.
My S7 slipped out of my hand mid lockdown and the case opened up as it fell and landed screen first and made a nice little crack on it 😭 I've had it since new in 2016 and its been fine throughout
Here in Australia, we didn't get the snapdragon processor for the Note 20 ultra which i was really looking forward to, we got the exynos 990 which feel like a rip off that its 2 generations old, so ill def be getting the S20 FE Edition 5G
In the European 5G version it also has the snapdragon 865 as well
FYI - The glass on the screen is gorilla glass 3 for the FE.
The cameras are not the same as the S20 and from the limited camera reviews available at this point, the image quality seems quite different. Otherwise, great review as always.
Side note, it's frustrating that Samsung put expandable storage in this phone but not the Note 20. Pretty greedy on Samsung's part.
So the pricing strategy of S20 FE 4G Exynos vs 5G SD865 version means Samsung admitted they gouched the exynos markets with their exynos S20 and Note 20 series!
I really like the Plastic back... Way better than glass...

Definitely the navy colour is 😋
I got the Cloud Red and it looks pretty cool. Even my wife likes the color better than her red iPhone XR.
Any reason why the video quality of this review maxes out at 360p?😕
RUclips hasn't finished processing it.
Stop watching from your low resolution iPhone 6 SE 2020.lol
@@fyahburn2349 I actually was watching it on my Note9 which maxes out at 1440p. sabishihito's reply makes more sense than your poor attempt at trolling.
Nice Sum up Lisa , for those of us living in the global regions that wanted the slightly better snapdragon 865 5g/ chipset , this is a nice package(although i would have liked the bigger display ) , and with a bonus flat screen ( i really dislike curved edge screens ....got three of them :( ).
And another plus with the plastic back , the device is a tad lighter.
Its sort of funny how people go from stuff in the old days that is good and practical to things like heavy easily breakable curvy glass backs , and people say the glass is more premium :) ( humans are just weird ) .
Samsung could have really put the cherry on top by just adding a 3.5 mm headphone jack , then it really would have been a fan edition .
you do get the snapdragon 865 if you go for the 5g model no matter where
lisa's utterance was erroneous
I thought the cameras were different? Seems like a lot of misinfo in this video
Yeah. Actually, it's not the same set of Cameras as the S20.
It has 12MP Wide
12MP Ultrawide and
8MP Telephoto Camera and it's not all
Exynos in all International Markets, when you get the 5G Model you'll get the
SD865.
So that's that.
In Europe, and other Exynos countries look like we have Exynos for the 4G variant and SnapDragon for the 5G, finally a Galaxy with Snapdragon here, and I definetively prefer a good plastic back than a glass back, I would only prefer over it a premium metal back, but unfourtunately I probably don't see those in a while because the "wireless charging" that I could live without, only degrades faster the battery for a very very slightly comfortable charging while not doing nothing with the phone if you want to use it you'll need be wired anyways, and for the bed, USB-C are double sided is very easy to plug it corectly, TL;DR I prefer metal over glass, I even would pay a slight extra even it does mean losing the wireless charging
The bezel is really thick though. Although, on the balance, the price is good if you don't want used S20/+ or wait for OnePlus 8T
Radtech At this point I think Cook is saving “thin bezels” for the next design iteration after the square corner in iPhone 12, 13, 14
Great video and lov'in the T-Shirt Lisa !
