  • On November 13, 2018, Sotheby's auctioned off over 100 jewels from the Bourbon-Parma family. One diamond tiara had been a wedding present from Emperor Franz Josef of Austria to his great-niece, Archduchess Maria Anna. It sold for 250,000 CHF to a buyer who was not me.
    The star of the show that night was Marie Antoinette’s pearl and diamond pendant, which sold for a mind-boggling 36,427,000 CHF. But I found myself wondering more about Maria Anna. Who was she? Why hadn’t I seen any pictures of her if she had such a fantastic jewel collection at her disposal?
    So I did what any self-respecting royal researcher would do. I told everyone else to get lost until I had an answer. Here's what I found out:

    ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
    ----------------------------------------------------
    I tell stories about tiaras and the fascinating royal women who wore them. Join me as I follow these tiaras across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and-sometimes-into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
    This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
    ABOUT ME
    -------------------
    I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
    Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

    Your use of Johann Strauss' Vienna Blood Waltz is an excellent choice as a background for this! Plus it inspired me to listen to all my Strauss favorites again; never a bad idea. Great video, as always!

    This is the first photo I’ve seen of poor Sophie, aside from the one of her and Franz Ferdinand’s fateful visit. She was quite lovely. I’m off to google more photographs of her and F. F.

      Yes, she was lovely! If you're interested in Sophie, you might like the book "The Assassination of the Archduke: Sarajevo 1914 and the Romance That Changed the World" by Greg King and Sue Woolmans. It has a lot of great info about their courtship and life together.

    Yeah, I get all this things about the tiaras in one hands. However, capitalism, being a highly corruptive and broken system, is a lot better than we used to have before! We need to remember that capitalistic world is a child of the 20th century, and before we've seen slavery, aristocrats that told us what to wear, speak and eat, and horrible life conditions. Today's world is far from perfect, but it this the best we have had since forever.
    P.S. I would love to have a tiara!!!

    • @TheGirlintheTiara
      @TheGirlintheTiara  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely. Even with all the problems in the world right now, I'm happy to be able to live, work, and play as I see fit (within reason, of course!), which would never have been possible in any previous century. I would love to have a tiara, too, but not so much as a symbol of past aristocratic privilege...just as a beautiful piece of art with a fascinating history. :)

      Sometimes museums buy the tiaras that come up at auction - I wish that happened more often, so we could see them. I hate the thought of them sitting unused and unseen in a vault. If I had one and couldn't wear it out (because I have no social life), I'd want to display it as art!
