- Women in History begins with the story of Anna of Austria, Queen of Spain. Anna was the eldest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and his first cousin, Maria of Spain. She was born in Spain during her maternal grandfather, Emperor Charles V's reign, but moved to Vienna when she was four years old. History tells us Anna was a popular lady at Court. Anna's engagement was announced to her uncle Philip II in February 1569, and they married by proxy in May 1570.
Anna of Austria now the Queen of Spain was characterised as lively and cheery, and she managed to lighten the mood at the Spanish court. Anna kept herself primarily busy with needlework. Anna and Philip's marriage is regarded as pleasant. She was allegedly Philip's favourite wife as well as her father's favourite child. Diplomats said that the monarch was madly in love with his young wife.
Badajoz was the temporary setting for the court in 1580 due to Philip II's claim to the Portuguese crown. She died of influenza there, eight months after giving birth to her final child, Maria, who outlived her mother by three years. Anna was buried at Badajoz at first, but her corpse was eventually moved to El Escorial.

OMG I cannot believe that the narration is AI. 'Her' voice is lovely! Technology has certainly advanced in recent years. Voices used to be staccato. Please let's have more foreign royalty. So many interesting stories to tell of lesser known royalty.
More coming soon Laraine! Thanks 😊
It was after this era that the inbreeding in the Hapsburg line really started to have an effect.
Superb as always great narration from the lady also, look forward to more, thank you. 👍
Thanks Robert
@@HistoryRoadshow a plesure as always😊
I love this channel!
Great channel!
Thanks Christine 😊
Everybody says that a possible marriage was impossible between Richard III and Elizabeth of York because they were uncle and niece. This marriage between uncle and niece was, however, deemed perfectly acceptable. Philip had his faults but his four wives seemed very fond of him.
Narration❤️
Every portrait of Anna looks exactly like my mother
Music too loud/distracting otherwise good content. Have subscribed.
Great little video & info!
Quick question: Where is John?! Are we no longer going to have his short lectures?
I'm still here Ann 🖐 and back on your screen this weekend. The real reason is I've got quite a bit of building work going on. I can't always record in the studio, hence you get the delightful Sandra, albeit as I'm sure you're aware AI. Glad you enjoyed this new video, lot's more to come on ladies from the era. 😊
Is this a new series running alongside your usual weekly videos? If so great, will all videos be short like this or will they vary in length depending on the female subject. Also I thought Jon was the main/only person involved in the History Roadshow
Just a change of direction, still be running as normal on Sunday, but spreading the folio a bit wider to introduce new characters from history. This season of videos are all based on women from history within the 16th century. Thanks Shane hope you enjoy? 😊
@@HistoryRoadshow Great to see growth. So will your female History Roadshow partner be presenting the series?
Beautiful woman, but however a very short life!
Philip adored his wife Isabel but didn’t know he loved Anna even more. I guess Anna was more receptive in the bedroom.
Who is John Marshall who does some of the narrations! His voice is wonderful!
That's me! Thanks 😊
The voice sounds like a young Judy Dench.
Am l missing something? Where is Jon? Great video, just perplexed... 🤔
Old video Ann, I tried AI voice on that one! Thanks for watching 😊
Maternal grandfather? Being the daughter of Maximilian II, Charles was also her paternal grandfather. Hol up
Also if she was Maximilian II's daughter, wouldn't they be cousins?
Married her uncle gross.

I was confused lol for us in France Anne d'Autriche is the wife of king Louis XIII and the mother of Louis XIV...
The series is about women of the 16th century. Louis XIII was 17th 😊
I thought the same, until I saw it was about women in the 16th century. So I thought there must be another one, very confusing when more than one person has the same title/name, especially when they were not even 100 years apart. I looked up Henry IV once and got the English and the French one, but 200 years separate those two 🙂
There’s a video about the other one on the channel The Kings Of France.
Yeah, that was my first thought, but this was really interesting.
