- Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria was born on February 13, 1743, in Vienna, Austria. She was the second daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. Maria Elisabeth was known for her intelligence and beauty. She was often described as the most beautiful of all the Habsburg princesses.
In 1760, Maria Elisabeth was engaged to her cousin, Charles III of Spain. However, the marriage was never consummated, as Charles preferred men and had numerous male lovers. Maria Elisabeth never married and remained in her mother's court, where she played an active role in cultural and artistic affairs.
Maria Elisabeth was a patron of the arts and was particularly interested in music. She was a talented musician and played the harpsichord and the lute. She also supported the work of composers such as Christoph Willibald Gluck and Christoph Wagenseil.
Maria Elisabeth was a devout Catholic and devoted much of her time to charitable works. She founded a convent in Vienna and established a school for poor children. She died on September 22, 1808, at the age of 65. Maria Elisabeth is remembered as a cultured and compassionate woman who played an important role in the artistic and cultural life of the Habsburg court.

She was the most musically talented among her sisters as well. Her music collection was quite impressive too.
She had a very full and productive life, especially for the time period in which she lived! Wonderful to learn so much about her!!
Glad you enjoyed it Janet, thank you 😊
Love this era of history. The portraits are so lovely!
Thanks Lynsey 😊
❤❤❤❤ thank you
Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you Jon. Very interesting video. No need to be beautiful in order to have a fulfilled life 😉 Thank you
That's what I day to myself Anita! Thanks as always 😊

@@jamesmcgreenmine6329 everybody knows now what you do for a living, thank you 😅
Shorter than expected but interesting as always nonetheless 😊
Can be hard at times to work out and remember who is who due to the similarity of names and titles 🤔 🤯
Great use of portraits and images, fascinating and beautiful. Very romanticised in appearance, kinda makes you want to jump into them and be part of that world 🥰 😍
I think one of the most confusing videos was Sophia Dorothea, four Georges and two Sophia's 🤔 Anyhow, yes this was a bit shorter than you'd expect, but the others in her story play a very short role and added nothing to her overall life. Thanks as always Shane. 😊
I love learning new stuff. Great episode. Keep them coming.
Thank you Mary Ann 😊
This particular video was most interesting and educational. I always knew about Marie Antoinette and her brother Joseph, but very little about the other siblings. At least she had a strong and independent personality, otherwise she would have fallen apart as a result of the devastating effects of smallpox. Smallpox was a horrendous disease, as well as tuberculosis. Some distant past family members died of tuberculosis, leaving their three daughters orphans at a very young age. You don't forget that sort of family history. Thank you again
Thanks as always Cassandra 😊
Wow!
Pretty much all of Empress Maria Theresa daughters are kind of lumped into the princess Maria's, except for Maria Antonia who became Marie Antoinette. Thank you so much for giving us more details about about this princess I didn't really know much about her
I've still not done a video on Antoinette, maybe in the future, but your correct in saying that these other sons and daughters also have a life worth telling. Thanks Agnes 😊
Smallpox really did some damage to women of the time. Beautiful graphics. Love this time period.
If she hadn't had the disease than who knows! Thanks as always Jane 😊
How nice to hear about a member of the Austrian Hapsburg family who isn’t Maria Theresea and Marie Antoinette! Please tell us about the rest of Empress Maria Theresea’s many children.
I'll see what I can do Monica, thanks 😊
Interesting character. The political intrigues around the Royal marriage merry go round in Europe always fascinates.
Always intriguing looking into the lives of others Niven. Thank you 😊
I’d love one Maria Carolina of Naples or her sister Amalia
Noted, thanks 😊
That would have been a strange situation if she had married the French King. She would have been her sister's step grandmother!
Anything for power back then Ali, thanks as always 😊
@@HistoryRoadshow yes definitely
It was common for situations like that with royalty Germaine of Foix had a child with her Step Grandson 😅
You never disappoint, Jon. Great video!
Thank you Trish 😊
Good afternoon Jon! Is there any possobillity of an episode about Nicholas Culpeper? I'm studying herbal medicine and Mr Culpeper is one of the most wellknown! Thank you for allowing me to ask as well as continuing learning!
Can't promise anytime soon! But I'll take a look, thanks Cheryl 😊
I wish she had married early with a loving husband and kids of her own. Though it was a fulfilled life but her beauty was way beyond her looks. Sad times for girls when they were viewed as a commodity.
Probably not much changed over the years ahead. She did however have a decent life. Thanks Ambreen 😊
Question Jon ❓❓❓
When do you plan on doing another Live? It's been a while
Good question, due to the fact I've been producing two videos a week it's difficult to fit one in at the minute, but I'll do my best to get back to Lives soon!
♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️
Maria Theresia was the wife of the Roman Emporer. There was no title of 'Empress'. But more important she had real power as archduchess of Austria, queen of Hungar, Bohemia, etc etc. Her husband only had a cpmletly powerlss title.
Innsbruck, at least she had a good view.
Thanks SuS 😊
She wasy second favorite. So sad the display of the horrors of small pox.
That sentence @4:30 makes no sense. After Elizabeth's mother died her brother asked her to leave court and she was appointed cannoness by her mother? Didn't you state her mother was dead?
Kropferte Liesl! 😅 she really must have had a good portion of humour!
