Thank you. This puts the literary fiction of Alexandre Dumas into historical perspective. As an American, I wonder how many Frenchmen believe the Dumas account to be historically accurate.
In general, fictions tend to shape people’s understanding of history, but I’m not sure original Dumas’ version shaped it more than every other very loose movie adaptations of his books, especially American ones:-) So many competing versions have probably confused people more than pushed them to adhere to Dumas’ creative story. However, although history french school programs focus more on recent periods (19th and 20th centuries), as you would expect, the Ancient Regime is still very much taught in primary school. And historical tv programs are very popular in France, so French people have access to quite an abundant amount of accurate historic facts and resources.

While I see why proxy marriages were performed, they had to be weird AF for the bride and groom. Imagine already technically be married to someone that you’re first meeting. Like even before you’ve laid eyes on one another or spoke even one word, you were married. The awkwardness had to be obvious and palpable for almost everyone. She made sure Louis wasn't even informed of Council meetings, which he should have been attending. When he found out one was being held, and went there, she stood up, grabbed his arm and dragged him from the room - utterly humiliating for a reigning king. No wonder he eventually staged a coup against her. She was an atrocious parent even by the standards of the time, and as the title says, a traitor. Marie de Medici was also the mother of the British queen Henrietta Maria the wife of Charles the First-that king's marriage into French autocratic royalty had important consequences for later English history as it signalized that the English monarchy was aligning itself with the Catholic world and that the English church was to have more of a Catholic slant than a Protestant one.Charles employed artists from the continent to design buildings in the baroque style that epitomized things like the idea of the divine right of kings.Inevitably there was a reaction to all this which ended up in the English Civil Wars, the trial and execution of the king and the victory of parliament and the decade long rule of Cromwell. There was a repetition of all this with James II who tried to do much the same thing as his father Charles and the result was somewhat similar but this time a limited monarchy was installed which is the type of monarchy that Britain and most other countries in Europe(and elsewhere)have today.
Thank you for watching. I have made a video about Henrietta Maria, you can watch it here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/StPTdDpYpmk/видео.html

Her depiction in "Henry IV." was funny and probably accurate.
Not... really not. It's a horrible film based on a novel of Heinrich Mann not on historical facts

Thank you for this amazing video. I love all your videos but this one was the best yet! Wow, what a a conniving, devious bully Marie de 'Medci was to her son Louis; sadistic and cruel too. I am surprised she didn't try to kill Louis XIII to remain in power and have dominion over him; if her revolts against him had successed, who knows, she may have put him in a cell to rot! I am very happy she was infamous as a poisonous Traitor, and was moved from pillar to post, in her later years! Who would want that power mad viper in their kingdom? Good she died alone and poor, just what she deserved. Xxxx
I'm glad you enjoyed this video. To me, she's one of the most intriguing (although vicious) characters from the French court. Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel in the past year !! Happy 2022 !

That's such a brilliant thing to have a list of! And from so many countries; you must know loads! I mostly know British ones, & certainly not enough to have 14 faves! I'd boringly say Nelly Gwyn... oh, & Euphemia Elphinstone, mistress of James V of Scotland (before he married Marie de Guise), cos I'm descended from their illegitimate son 😂
I'm too lazy/busy to google, lol, but I'd be interested to know which monarchs the people above had relationships with! I know Bessie Blount, Robert Dudley & James Hepburn, & I think Axel von Ferson was Catherine the Great's lover, but I'm confused by "Robert Darnley"???

While I see why proxy marriages were performed, they had to be weird AF for the bride and groom. Imagine already technically be married to someone that you’re first meeting. Like even before you’ve laid eyes on one another or spoke even one word, you were married. The awkwardness had to be obvious and palpable for almost everyone. I get second hand embarrassment thinking about it.
I think the whole ordeal of a marriage awkward back then… especially from the perspective of a woman. Thank, you for watching !

And she still managed to guilt-trip Louis all his life! He deserved so much better than her or his father.

Wow,She Sounds A Lot Like Many Queen Mother Regents In History,Like Isabella,Queen Of England,Nicknamed The "She-Wolf" Of France,Wife Of Edward II. She And Her Lover Had The King Imprisoned,Where He Died,Then She Became Regent For Her Son Edward III. When He Came Of Age,He Had Her Lover Roger Mortimer EXECUTED,Punished Her,But Forgave Her,And Welcomed Her Back To Court. It Was Probably The Only Way These Women Could Gain Power,Since There Have Been So Few Queen Regnants(Queens In Their Own Right)In History!!!
