The chaos between (straight) Louis, his bi sister in law who he was also sleeping with and his gay brother and the many, many, many lovers is just too much to make sense of in ur head
You should do an episode on the Palatine, Chalotte Elisabeth, the sister in law of Louis XIV, she's a very interesting character, especially in her letters ^^
Her letters make me cackle with laugher- such as her comments on her looks during a cold “a shat on carrot” and speaking about marriage and her giving birth
She was amazing and the only woman to have the metaphorical balls to turn her back on Louis XIV when he bribed her son into marrying his youngest daughter with Athenaïs. She slapped Philippe and didn't acknowledge Louis when he bowed to her.
The French court sounds so much more entertaining then the English one around this time, for real 😂😂😂. What really takes the cake is one mistress unleashing her pet BEARS (like ma’am?? 😭) in the other ones room, straight comedy. Such drama!
The English court was very interesting at this time, Charles 11 was the reigning monarch, he had as many if not more mistresses than Louis from The Duke of Buckinghams daughter, Barbara Villiers, to cockney actress Nell Gwynne, he also had several illegitimate children, his sister was Henriette of Orleans, Louis sister in law, wife to his brother " Monsieur" I have read countless books about this period of history, Louis the Sun King , wore heels because it was the fashion, the fashion was for the heels to be red, a status symbol, Much like Cuban heeled boots men wore in the sixties, only heard two lines of this flat voice, monark!! as opposed to monarch, totally clueless.

I can’t imagine the stress of knowing your lover could casually cheat on you at any whim. That there are dozens of young ladies - hundreds including non-nobles - constantly throwing themselves at him. I had a friend who dated a famously attractive athlete and though she trusted him, they couldn’t go out in public without having women come up to them and basically proposition him as though she wasn’t sitting right there. They eventually broke up. 😞 Versailles sounds like it would give me panic attacks.
Had a friend that had a gorgeous husband. She was a genuinely nice lady & handled it better than just about anybody I've ever seen. She would allude to it indirectly & just roll her eyes. I loved that, don't know why.
Françoise de Montespan was born Rochechouart de Mortemart one of a oldest aristocratic family of France. She liked to tease the king saying that her family was older than his. She had the famous Mortemart spirit, madame de Sévigné said of her that: "To the most surprising beauty, she joined the most lively, the finest, the best cultivated spirit, this hereditary spirit in her family".

Well no apparently she didn't know about the king's affair with Mme de maintenon... Because imagine that the king kept Madame de Montespan at court after the poison affair to shield rumors of his secret affair with Madame de Maintenon. So that no one knows that He was really with Maintenon. Only rumors. I had read in a biographical book on Madame de Maintenon that MarieTherese had only learned a few weeks before her death of Maintenon's secret affair with the king and when she gives her the ring it was before to know and just to thank her for it having reconciled with her husband the king! she didn't know their relation. Not to tell her : OK you can get married as soon as... Especially since it was unthinkable and almost impossible for a king to marry a woman below his rank. So the queen can't have just this idea of mariage. Sorry for the traduction it's Google

The chaos between (straight) Louis, his bi sister in law who he was also sleeping with and his gay brother and the many, many, many lovers is just too much to make sense of in ur head
I bet that 38 yrsold deflowering a 15 yrsold boy thingy played a part….
Is there a particular book you recommend?
She was amazing and the only woman to have the metaphorical balls to turn her back on Louis XIV when he bribed her son into marrying his youngest daughter with Athenaïs. She slapped Philippe and didn't acknowledge Louis when he bowed to her.
Elisabeth Charlotte* not Charlotte Elisabeth.
@@MegCazaletLetters of Princess Palatine !
I am impressed how Louis remembered all mistresses' names.
And the children he had with.
He probably didn’t tho 😂
Thanks for posting Lindsay, I'm so addicted to this 17th century tea!
The French court sounds so much more entertaining then the English one around this time, for real 😂😂😂. What really takes the cake is one mistress unleashing her pet BEARS (like ma’am?? 😭) in the other ones room, straight comedy. Such drama!
French court of Louis XIV must have been wild 😂😂 My poor head wouldn't be able to keep up with the shenanigans of the court
The English court was very interesting at this time, Charles 11 was the reigning monarch, he had as many if not more mistresses than Louis from The Duke of Buckinghams daughter, Barbara Villiers, to cockney actress Nell Gwynne, he also had several illegitimate children, his sister was Henriette of Orleans, Louis sister in law, wife to his brother " Monsieur" I have read countless books about this period of history, Louis the Sun King , wore heels because it was the fashion, the fashion was for the heels to be red, a status symbol,
Much like Cuban heeled boots men wore in the sixties, only heard two lines of this flat voice, monark!! as opposed to monarch, totally clueless.
Thanks!
Could you do a video about the life of madame de pompadour? I always thought she was so fascinating
Me too, especially after watching her doctor who episode
@@laurennicole9169 same here 😀
Its really interesting how she basically ran Versailles for an extended period of times and pushed her enemies aside like dominoes
I really admire Madame La Marquise de Pompadour!!
Perfect timing to enjoy my history moment over a hot cup of tea🍵
I think I've binged like 10 videos since finding this channel over the weekend. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge/skill with us, Lindsay!
I also love running over to tell my parents things I've learned that make them go, "wait really??"
You should do one about the lovers of Charles II of England and Scotland. I believe he got around quite a lot as well
the love of his life was maria mancinis sister, hortense
@@hannahtanski3911 more like "a love of his life"
@@hannahtanski3911 what about Nell
Lindsay! I love your French Accent for the names! 😌
Versailles sounds like it would give me panic attacks.
Had a friend that had a gorgeous husband. She was a genuinely nice lady & handled it better than just about anybody I've ever seen. She would allude to it indirectly & just roll her eyes. I loved that, don't know why.
Yesssss I love French history and was hoping you would do some proper videos on it! I just finished rewatching Versailles as well 😇❤️
Have you checked out The Kings of France? 🤔She’s a RUclipsr who goes into detail of the French royal family and other historical figures.😌
Versailles is not historically accurate but it is fun to watch
I want to rewatch it too 😁🙈🫣
@@ChibiProwl I shall take a look! I know a fair bit about Louis XIV, XV and XVI but there’s always more and other figures to learn about!
@@November_892 Some of it is very accurate but definitely not all of it, definitely a brilliant show!
that first mistress story was so fucked up omg
Françoise de Montespan was born Rochechouart de Mortemart one of a oldest aristocratic family of France. She liked to tease the king saying that her family was older than his.
She had the famous Mortemart spirit, madame de Sévigné said of her that:
"To the most surprising beauty, she joined the most lively, the finest, the best cultivated spirit, this hereditary spirit in her family".
Wrong. Montespan's name wss ACTUALLY *Françoise de Rochechouart* "Mortemart" was her father's TITLE. #DONTCopyWikipedia.
@@ThomasHarding1990 I don't need Wiki Something to know that this part of the Rochechouart family was called Rochechouart de Mortemart or simply Rochechouart Mortemart (Mortemart is indeed a title) to show the difference with the eldest branch of the Rochechouart family.
The members of the house of Rochechouart de Mortemart bore this name as Françoise de Rochechouart de Mortemart...
@@ThomasHarding1990de Mortemart was the junior branch of the family (the main one had died out by Montespan’s day). So yes, the family were the Rochechouarts of Mortemart.
I think when the Queen gave the ring to madame de maintenon it, it symbolize that the Queen was giving her blessing to her to marry Louis which I think is very touching
Well no apparently she didn't know about the king's affair with Mme de maintenon...
Because imagine that the king kept Madame de Montespan at court after the poison affair
to shield rumors of his secret affair with Madame de Maintenon. So that no one knows that He was really with Maintenon. Only rumors.
I had read in a biographical book on Madame de Maintenon that MarieTherese had only learned a few weeks before her death of Maintenon's secret affair with the king and when she gives her the ring it was before to know and
just to thank her for it
having reconciled with her husband the king!
she didn't know their relation.
Not to tell her : OK you can get married as soon as...
Especially since it was unthinkable and almost impossible for a king to marry a woman below his rank. So the queen can't have just this idea of mariage.
Sorry for the traduction it's Google
Through history and around the world, unfaithfulness from Royals is such a consistent topic I can only Imagine how many people actually have royal blood and are totally unaware of being of being somewhat/somehow royals.
Everyone
I love watching your videos. I have learned a hundred times more from you and your history Channel then I have ever learned in school in any history or class.
He definitely had a type because they all resemble each other
I guess it's the standard way of painting they had back then
Wow...his mother must have felt that she "cured" her son... lol!
Funnily enough, she worried that Louis was gay, but encouraged his brother Philippe to be effeminated and gay. Because she felt that a gay feminine brother will be less of a threat ^^'
I guess he really was either indeed CURED or probably
he might not have ever really needed that maybe it’s his younger brother that needed that well maybe🤔
Honestly I love your videos Lindsey they are educational and entertaining at the same time 🥰🥰🥰
Great video! I think it would be hard to be a royal mistress because you know that your wealth and Status depends on on the favor of the king, but you also know that the king's interest will fade eventually.
I hope you do Charles II and his girls soon. And the genealogical connection between him and William through Diana.
Also Camilla and Sarah Ferguson.
He was a most flamboyant king
20:30 An explanation: Isabelle was from the contested region of Lorraine/Lotringen between France and the German States. My guess is she spoke French with a German accent. But then so did the Princess Palatinate Elizabeth Charlotte, the sister-in-law to Louis XIV.
You mean *EliSabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate, Princess Palatine* #DONTCopyWikipedia.
Didn't Established Titles turn out to be a major scam? Saw it on The Click
I was about to ask why some of the illegitimate children were legitimized, while others were not. But it seems you will answer that in the next video. Must have been incredibly frustrating for those who were not.
"...she enjoyed the privilege of giving the Queen Mother her regular enema's". The dead pan delivery almost made me believe she DID enjoy it. LOL
Idk why people find history boring
Just look at all this TEA 🍵
Did anyone else notice how much the queen of Portugal looks exactly like the portrait of Kathryn Howard?
Oh it does!!
26:16 Wow, virtually identical!
Omg!!! 😱 this needs its own video!
What I understood from the documentaries is that men back then specially kings had to have mistresses. Having mistresses was a sign of virility and masculinity.
Yay I’m so glad you posted! I’ve been rewatching old videos and needed something new to have on repeat every night 😅
Great vlog as always! I lost Louis 14th and his lovers at the bakery. Mamma Mia! What a jungle of lovers, nannies and drama! That is a town in Greece btw. I can not even get ONE misstress… I am no king. It could be the reason… lol! Keep up your splendid work!
Catherine de Gramont's personality and backstory are perfect for nowdays historical shows.
I hope your feeling ok Lindsay, during the ad it sounded like you were struggling to speak. Thank you for the video but get better soon as the weather changes here in Canada!

What a Viper’s nest Versailles was.
Any place you have money & power there will be drama.
The English court had Henry viii & you know how THAT went.
It was a semi-insult at the time probably but man, The Grand She-Wolf is a GREAT nickname.
Happy to hear that the reforestation idea is going so well, esp since the airport personnel, have all stopped laughing! Great idea esp for those of 'low self-esteem'. Seriously though, glad that more attention is being given to support the health of the planet that supports us all!
Imaging having such a tremulous affair with Louis XIV that you retire to a nunnery to live out the rest of your life contemplating your affair and regretting it
Mm yes, to be so privileged enough to give the queen mother her regular enemas, can’t say I envy that😭
Kings in England used to have a "groom of the stool" (meaning toilet) for.botty-wiping and similar functions.
Being allowed to be that intimately close to a person when they are vulnerable like that indicates great trust from the monarch.
Grooms.of the Stool were very influential, and well rewarded for their pains, and so the position was very sought after.
@@lilymarinovic1644 yes I heard of the position of groom of the stool. And I can't say no matter how much privilege or anything I would get in the world I would not want to be wiping some guys butt. That's nasty
Not my idea of a good time. Repeat after me:For the love of God, eat some fruit!
@@nobodysbaby5048 to be fair, medical science of the he time thought too much raw fruit and veg was bad for.ypur health. After all, it was what peasants ate and they dropped like flies.

Hey, I really enjoy your content and I think you are a really good creator so I should warn you. Don't work with established titles. These titles aren't really given to anyone and you don't really own anything, it's like buying a star. It doesn't actually give you any right to use the title. There wouldn't be anything wrong with it if they were transparent about it. Plus there is no information about how much money goes to planting trees vs to the pockets of company's owner. I almost bought it for my brother. It's a waste of money...
Yay! Thank you so much for this video, it's something I really wanted to see!
Oh my gosh You make such good videos I have been a fan for 4 years😍
YESSSS I HAVE BEEN WAITING A LONG TIME FOR THIS!!!!
They make Peyton Place look tame. In modern times, Louis XIV would be understood as a predator of Underage girls.
I should think it be hard to be a courtesan in this court since king Louie the 14th seemed more in love with himself than any lady in his service
Luckily, I was not one of his mistress for three reasons.
1. I’m black
2. I was born in the early 2000s
3. I’m American
You are lucky dear, he could infect you with STDs and yuck 🤢 what smelly man he could be they never bathed at Versailles
Me too. And on top of that I’m like a foot taller than him, so that’s a long way to travel for a kiss
@@shostysboo short, smelly potential disease carrier ( not proper condoms and protection this era) hmm how women went all crazy about him OHHH I forgot.. king!!
Fun fact : it might have been possible as Louis XIV is suspected to be the father of "la mauresse de moret" a nun famous for having the favor of the king and for being black :)
However seeing as he died some time ago you indeed are not able to be one of his mistress
Sadly, race/ethnicity wouldn't save Sally Hemmings from such a fate.
The French Kings have always been known for their countless mistresses and illegitimate children, especially the Bourbons, Henri IV, his grandson Louis XIV, and Louis XV, the great-grandson of Louis XIV. These were the French Bourbons who had the most affairs with several mistresses. It would be interesting to have videos about Henri IV and Louis XV of France about their various mistresses and illegitimate children
I saw reports that Established Titles could be a scam...is this true? Love your content
Yes avoid at all costs
Surprisingly historically correct. I'm grateful you've mentioned La Voisin and her involvement in black masses and child sacrifice
I’ve been waiting for this!!!!!! Yessss!!!!!
A perfect Tuesday evening treat!
Hey there! I enjoy your videos and watch them every Tuesday. I wanted to let you know that established titles is actually not a reputable business. I just wanted to let you know about it and let you do research on it. I noticed you rep them a lot as promoters, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the scam going on with it. There are several videos on RUclips about it lately. I just wanted to let you know! I really do enjoy your videos and hope you continue to make such great content!!!
They should make a tv show on the lives of the Mancini sisters !
I feel like Im watching a very intense reality show but the 17th Century 😵💫
This King seems better then king Henry at least he didn't behead any of his wives or mistresses.
Elizabeth-Charlotte (Lisolette) knew how to throw (German) shade.
its so cool being early! great video as always Lindsey :)
Listening to these videos, I have come to realise that I live a boring and uneventful life. I want to keep it that way.
I have waited a lot for this topic.
Great episode, can't wait for the next one!
I’m upset that the TV series “Versailles” portrayed Madame de Maintenon the way they did. If they portrayed her as she historically was (and maybe didn’t go with the “man in the iron mask” narrative the way they did), they could’ve had a fourth season if they wanted to.
Being a mistress was the greatest position for a woman back then.
Being a wife was not bad either XD
Like, there's a lot of talks about Louis's mistresses, but his wife had more power than any of the mistresses while she was alive and helped him a lot with France itself ^^
Depends on who's mistress they were if they were the king's mistress then it's great if not then not really
@@iezzan7034 A count or a duke's mistress was not bad either, if they're not married to another more powerful man. A miller's mistress, yeah that's not a good position XD
Louis XIV was indeed lucky to have been born before the outbreak of AIDS.
He certainly had syphilis to worry about
They did have syphilis though back then, so definitely not risk free...

Louis XIV is my favorite king. Can't wait to watch this!
Not really. He persecuted protestants
That was not what I learnt about Marie Mancini at all from academic papers and books. I never liked medieval portraits (too "fluffy" for my taste) but her portrait was the one and only I ever thought as beautiful. Like real beautiful. Not sure it was just because Ferdinand's (the painter) style, he painted Hortense as well and I was only 'ok' with that one. She was Louis' 1st love and personally I think their separation by the Queen and Cardinal marked his coming of age and realization that great power always followed by great pain. They lived long and die only a few months a part, kinda makes me wanna believe that in the end, these 2 always love each other and Louis died heartbroken after hearing Marie's death. Anyway, that was all just my personal opinion.
"Sire, I am leaving and you weep, and yet you are king."
This is well after the medieval period.

Boom! So that's where "stupid as a basket" comes from -- I've heard historians use that phrase to refer to later mistress Madame du Barry, and here's the genesis of it, from the primary accounts of an earlier relative of the King.
