- Eleonor of Habsburg was the prototype of the ideal renaissance princess, born and raised to serve her family in any given situation, even if that went against her personal desires.
From a young age, she was considered by her relatives as a valuable asset to the Habsburg dynasty and throughout her life she always behaved as a devoted and obedient daughter, sister and wife, with great pride and without any complains.
Many times in her life time, Eleonor was forced to do as she was told, sometimes making huge personal sacrifices. But, beyond being just a piece in the pollical chest game, Eleonor was also a Queen, twice, and a refined and educated woman, who had a knowledge of Europe much deeper than other royal women of her time.
From Flanders, where Eleonor was born and raised, to the Iberian Peninsula that she discovered in her youth and retired in her old age, and France, where Eleonor was queen for 17 years, surrounded by a court where she was seen as the sister of the enemy.
So, on this video, I’m going to try to find how did Eleonor become queen of France, as well as the personal dream she cherished throughout her reign there.

In Spanish we call her “la reina obediente” which means the obedient queen as she often put down her own desires to satisfy her brother

Except Joanna "the Mad" was NOT mad but Phillip was an emotional/sexually abusive sadist. Check out the highly detailed book "Isabella: The Warrior Queen" by Kirsten Downey. The focus on Joanna's life is explored in depth roughly from chapter 23rd. Her father was a flagrant egotistical sadist as well who deeply resented resented the power his wife had and held that grudge till he died. HIGHLY recommend that book.
I never said in the video she was in fact mad, i used the expression Juanna "the mad" because this was the epithet given to her (rightly or wrongly) in her life time and used ever since. It is scientifically correct (from the point of view of history, as it is a part of her life story that cant be erased, even if she wasn't) and allows me to identity her in a simple and direct way.
As to her supposed madness, I agree with modern historians that point out that she wasn't mad like she was portrayed in historiography for centuries. But it impossible to deny that she probably suffered from some kind of mental health issue (depression maybe?) that it s now impossible to know for sure.
Only a professional could analyze her case. but that now is impossible.
Our society is much more open today to talk about mental health without stigmatizing the people who struggle with it, i think we should apply the same principle to the past.
Just because she might struggled with her mental health in a period of her life, doesn't mean that she was mad. But on the other side, doesn't mean that she was completely free from these issues.
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle (even that is questionable), but we will never have any certainty about this question, only theories (hopefully backed by science and not fantasies).
On the other hand, it's good to see that people are interested in this subject!

@@adriannespring8598 I think she was suffering from a severe form of depression disorder that can occurred after giving birth and they didn’t understand medical health issues in those days either!

Absolutely but literally read the book I suggested, during her lifetime her husband and father spread outright lies about her to oust her from power as Queen of Castile because they wanted the resource control she was in the way of. There's firsthand accounts of people meeting her and being mystified of the "mad" reports when she was in fact perfectly sane only not as outgoing & domineering as her mother.

Eleonor of Austria is said to have died of a broken heart, because when she finally met her daughter Maria of Portugal, the Princess acted indiferent, cold and with anger towards her mother… she died not long after that sad meeting…

The peasants also practiced arranged marriages (they were usually more geographically close, for obvs. reasons), so it's not exactly like they're free to just do whatever themselves. I think a lot of people would have been willing to sell out their children to live in splendor.
I found from reading a lot of the hapsburgs most or all of them were a nice and gentle family. Which can be hard to find with a lot of other European monarchs
Perhaps but I sure wish they’d known the dangers of interbreeding. You could in no way call them an attractive family. Catherine of Aragon must have got off lucky. Though, In later aged portraits , she was starting to get what looked like a tad of a hapsburg jawline. It’s a wonder the whole lot of them were t away with the squirrels. Think this was quite early into the ‘keep it in the family’ line. Not sure about Joanna. I’ve heard a very convincing case that she was t. Hmmm 🤔. @@gonefishing167 that’s true a lot of them probably were away with the squarrels look at don Carlos who was Philip of spains son. He wasn’t mentally well or physically and then Carlos 11 of spain . They sure didn’t know the dangers of interbreeding. It was interesting I was reading up on Eleanor when she married her 1 st husband Manuel they had a daughter Catherine and manuel had had another son John 11 of Portugal from a previous marriage. John of Portugal had considered marrying his half sister Catherine. That would have been awful. They didn’t know much but yes the hapsburg jaw most of them had

it is rare for women in the Renaissance period to have a happy ending, so it is nice to see eleanor have one by being able to finally reunite with her daughter
But her daughter turned her back on Leonor at the end, she refused to live together with her, that affected her health a lot and died shortly after they met.

Great upload. I didn’t know about her, history favours kings over queens. She lived a fascinating life.
I highly recommend the book: "Isabella A Warrior Queen" by Kirsten Downey for an incredibly in depth examination of the women's history in that family.

This is such a heartbreaking story and one I'm so glad I now know. I have been interested in similar videos on this and other royal documentary channels, for several years now. And I am always stunned by some of the details concerning royal families intrigue and drama. This story just made me sad.

Charles was Joanna's co-ruler actually. Since medical confinement wasn't a thing yet for the mentally ill he decided to keep Joanna where she was since it's for her safety as well.
Wow! Eleonor looks almost the spitting image of my mother. My mother has deepset or, what they called "Bedroom Eyyes" in Italy. My mother is full blooded Italian. If they were not so far apart in time, I would swear we were related. My mother's family on her mother's side are Nobility, and her father's mother was the daughter of a princess. So, maybe?
Her mother wasn't as "Mad" as she is made out to be.
