Even in Belgium i grew up watching the Sissi movies on tv every year around christmas time. As a kid i remember it being almost like a disney story, the beautiful young princess getting married etc.
It's weird how I'd never heard of Sisi until a couple years ago when I got really into reading about 19th century eastern/central Europe. A shame, her life is fascinating if terribly depressing - those Wittlesbachs never seem to have a good time, do they?
9:07 Elisabeth might have had Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Shirley Manson of Garbage (one of my favorite bands) had that. "I would spend two hours crying in the toilet - and whatever the result, I always thought I looked disgusting. I would look in the mirror every morning and be upset." - Shirley Manson
If I remember correctly, the assassin had planned to kill the Duke of Orleans, but failed when his target left earlier than expected. He then targeted the Empress after hearing she was residing in a hotel in the same area.
Very interesting short summary of Elizabeth's life. However a few flaws. Firstly Elizabeth did not have an affair with count Andrassy as she hated making love. Therefore she encouraged her husband to have a longtime affair with Katharina Schratt, who was as well kind of a soul mate to the emperor as his wife was unable to do so. The story of the death of crown prince Rudolf and baroness Mary Vetsera is all but a Romeo and Julia story. Mary was one of Rudolfs many affairs and there is more than one reason to believe that he already had enough from her and wanted closure. Some historians believe that the journey to Mayerling should bring this affair to an end. Whatever happened there, it was no death out of love without fulfillment (maybe but just maybe on her side). There are many theories what may have happened at Mayerling on this could winter night but all have one in common: The crown prince of Austria-Hungary did not die for love!
I've been watching the series about her on Netflix, which is a dramatic series so takes artistic liberties. It's interesting that she isn't as well known as Catherine the Great, especially since it was her family ruling right before WWI
Not as known?? She is one of the most famous royals of Europe ever 😂 when someone has a huge wedding dress people will even say “she had one of those Sissi dresses.” There’s also movies about her which have been massive hits for decades in many European countries.
I remember reading an article about Princess Sissi and I found out that her aunt Princess Sophia made her life miserable. An example is when she took Sissi's firstborn from her right after she gave birth and kept the child away from her.
I always feel such disgust for the way so many princesses and queens were treated, I know that in many ways their lives were much better compared to the average person of their times but I still
Psychosomatic symptoms? Definitely! I have them as well and man does it feel good to get away from your stressors. Those doctors did a huge favor to Sisi prescribing her vacation 😊 Also I have a theory that her son ended up offing himself because of his upbringing. I’ve heard many children who end up mental health issues because their mothers do not care for them (while still being physically around).
As of German and Austrian descent.. I feel really connected to her in a strange way… I’m OBSESSED w my hair and my appearance.. I thought I was the only peers in of Germanic blood who did the same thing? 😂 Anyone feel the same you
Very interesting video! However, allow me to make a correction: princess Sophie, later Archduchess Sophie, was not a princess of Greece and Denmark, as mentioned in 0:51. This is a completely different royal line
Being a royal wife is often tough, but poor Sisi, had it really bad. The first time I read about her history, at school in A Level European History, I felt so sad for her. 😥
8:39 "Here I Go Again" by White Snake is an awesome music video! We used to listen to that song all the time when I was a freshman at Doane University.
Sisi, Lady Di and Marie Antoinette have one thing in common..they all broke out from the golden cage in order to be more free....i understand them and its kinda remarkable.
A lot of the marital and familial arrangements remind me of the film Pride and Prejudice (2005), which I just watched again last night. Fantastic film!
I guess it wasn't common knowledge back then that being 96 lbs. at 5'8" would cause her beloved hair to thin considerably. But, maybe they had an early version of Rogaine 🤔.
Technically, the wife of an emperor/king doesn’t reign. She is just the wife of the emperor/king and mother of the ruler’s children. Same role as the late Prince Phillip, the late QEII’s husband. She was Empress of Austria/Queen of Hungary, but Franz Joseph was the one with the power (allegedly… he was a mama’s boy and let his mother have too much say in ruling Austria). If Elisabeth did have power, she could’ve told her monster-in-law to take a hike and shove it, lol.

Um, why are you claiming, at the beginning of the video, that Empress Elisabeth was a "ruler" who "reigned"? She was not a ruler at all and was only married to the actual ruler, Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Well that’s an eating disorder if I’ve ever seen one 8:24 I get why she didn’t want people taking pictures of her. Sucks to be uncomfortable in / unaccepting of your own body.
