While it might be a bit exaggerated, most three year olds are pretty keen when it comes to parroting things. No doubt she had heard it said before somewhere
@Sue Taft I'm not saying that she wouldn't have been self aware enough to say those exact words. She probably had heard someone say them in a bedtime story, or at someone's bedside. Sue Taft Not like that. How would she know those exact words? Her father probably told her she would be an angel soon and to say her prayers. I don’t know how Catholics do these things but Jews have to say quick prayers before they die. I remember watching a video on the St Jude website and there was a five-year-old boy who’s parents told him he would be an angel soon and he remained calm. It probably went something like that but in a different context. At that age, she cannot know those exact words automatically. Take Baylie’s word for it.

Mimi was definitely doing her sister in law and then she convinced her other brother to give her his son, omg good for her! I love how everyone was mad at Maria Amalia for being willful and bold but she actually ended up being a perfect political match for her quiet husband who just wanted to play with his kids all day. I bet he was thrilled to let her lead the country, most people don't neatly fit into their gender roles and many people lack the temperament needed to lead a country!
Sitting atop the throne mother calls "Maria darling come forth" a dozen eyes suddenly pop open as they all scramble over on all fours. "Yes mama" say all the Maria's in unison.
I think the worst part is when she recycled the name Elizabeth. I think it would be a slap in the face to her dead daughter. But that is just my opinion.
I have to add that saying Maria Elisabeth had no real interests is parroting what most authors say. She was hugely talented in music, able to play music at a highly technical level, and many of the musical pieces she owned is now with the state (Austria). She was a very gifted soprano too. Maria Amalia and her.
fun fact: my mother adored Maria Theresia and had two daughters. One of them she named Christina Theresia. I am her. My sisters second name is Maria. I really like the reference...
I’m a little bit confused about the timeline in this video how could Marie Antoinnette have visited her sisters in the convent if they didn’t move to the convent until their mother was dead? Their mother was definitely alive when Marie Antoinette went to France to become the queen.
The Little Renegade, this entire doc. was very full of unverifiable information, not very well researched. I checked the Wiki page link, and....crickets....

Their first name's dedicated to the Virgin Mary. All of Maria Theresa's children's first daughters are named after her... except Maria Amalia's for obvious reasons.
How could the daughters of a powerful empress not live lavishly when they controlled all that land...Marie Antoinette lived as a French queen, when her time arrived to be crowned, and then retreated with her kids away from court so she wouldn't have to appear always "puffed up" and "dressed to the nines" as the women in Versailles had to. Marie Antoinette was a foreigner in France even with the title of queen!
Thank you for the upload. In my family´s art collection are two original oil paintings from this time period since many generations. One is from 1759 and shows Maria Anna when she was around 20 years old. The other one is from 1766 and shows Marie Antoinette at the age of 11. This paintings are completely unknown in public circles. The painting of Marie Antoinette is truly lightening up the room, everything that meets the eye emanates refined, serene harmony, while the one of Maria Anna is giving you an impression of loneliness, sadness and resignation. Marie Antoinette was painted by Johann Sigismund Friedrich, 2. Fürst von Khevenhüller-Metsch, a Habsburg family friend and Envoy of the Austrian Emperor in Portugal and Torino. The painter of Maria Anna is unknown. I would very much like to show you this beautiful paintings but unfortunately it is not possible to post them here. (Apologies for my poor English) Greetings from Germany :)
Thank you Lindsay! As an Italian I love to see videos talking about important Italian people. There are not many videos about her, I'm curious to see yours since she's my second favourite Medici.
Do you think Marianna’s ‘pneumonia’ could have actually been active pulmonary tuberculosis (sometimes rarely not fatal), which then went on to Pott’s disease? (Hence the spinal trouble)
Actually, Maria Christina’s monument (from Albert) is a cenotaph. Maria Christina is buried in the Imperial crypt in Vienna, beside Albert. You can actually see the little coffin of her daughter, Maria Christina Theresa, in the Maria Theresien crypt.
Amalia's my favorite out of all the Archduchesses. She always had my sympathy because of her abysmal relationship with Maria Theresa, and my sympathy for her only grew after I discovered that she was married against her will to the Duke of Parma. I always wonder if her relationship with Maria Theresa might have improved at least a little had she been allowed to marry for love like her sister Maria Christina. Oh well, we'll never know. But I do find it interesting that despite her terrible relationship with Maria Theresa, Amalia was kind of like her in the sense that she was the real ruler of Parma like her mother in Austria. It was something interesting to learn and worth noticing. However, the daughter I have the most complex feelings for is Maria Christina. Initially, I had liked her to a degree, seeing as how she was a huge sponsor of the arts and the like, but once I found out she was Maria Theresa's favorite and how the favoritism was painfully obvious...well, all I can say is that my opinion changed drastically. It's because if there's one thing I absolutely can't stand, it's favoritism that a parent has towards only one of their children. But then I realized that even if Christina was the obvious favorite, to the point where she was able to marry for love while her sisters could not, it really isn't her fault. She didn't choose to be her mother's favorite, and really, any of the kids could have been Maria Theresa's favorite. The favorite just so happened to be Christina. So in the end, even if I still don't like Christina to a degree because of her being her mother's obvious favorite and I understand how her siblings felt towards her because of it, I remind myself that it's really Maria Theresa's fault for even playing favorites in the first place, not because Christina wanted to be the favorite. Everything in the world is full of gray borders, after all. Nothing's black and white.
Don’t worry, Maria Amalia loved her husband very much. Role of Karl of Zweibrucken was greatly exaggerated in the books. Yes, it wasn’t Mimi’s fault she was the favorite but she was really unpleasant to her siblings and even to their mother. One would think that with all those advantages, she can be more generous in spirit but she wasn’t. And that made me dislike her. Her dowry was not from her mother but from her brother Joseph’s inheritance from their father. Joseph was the sole heir and he allotted part of it for the establishment of his siblings. Mimi got half of the amount allotted.
@@MonicaTanAnLeng No she did not, and nor should she be expected to, considering that the marriage was arranged. It is well known that Amalia hade her mother for forcing her in to an arranged marriage. Amalia is worthy of great admiration, oposing a repressing system of arranged marriage denying women sexual freedom, by having lovers. Within that system, she was a true role model.
@@kimm.8800, I read her letters to close friends as translated in a 1932 biography on her. The letters were from several Italian noble families’ archives, if I remember it right. She loved her husband despite being in an arranged marriage. Their marriage wasn’t without problems but it was clear that she did.
Catholics .. and, oddly enough, at one time, also Jews. Miriam and Maria, are often cognomen 'titles' rather than personal names; by Roman and Hebrew conventions, names tended to have a meaning .. rather than just an appealing sound (for the mother). Devotion to Mary, Mother of the Lord Jesus, was very popular and this added to the convention - where males, as well as females, had or took Mary somewhere among their names even in one family .. Mario, for instance.
I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say I love your content. I am not sure why I've been interested in history more lately, but I have and your channel is so awesome.
How could Marie Antoinette have visited her sister in the convent on the way to France in 1770 when Marianna didn't enter the convent until after their mother died in 1780?
Thank you for this beautiful video. I found out I am related to Empress Maria Theresa and many other European royals and enjoy learning about them and European history.
This custom involves Catholic baptisms. Their actual names follow Maria; in France, it's Marie. (For men, it's Joseph.) My own Christian name was Marie Stephanie at my baptism, but my given name is Stephanie Marie (i.e. my middle name is Marie). It's still common among French Canadians. So, no, the Empress did not, in fact, name all her daughters Maria.
@@bbbb-db9gr You are confusing Mary's. The last name of Jesus'mother Mary (formally Miriam) is not known (or, at least, widely accepted). Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus' followers. Who she was is highly disputed today. She has been labeled everything from a prostitute to Jesus' wife.

Wait you're telling me a 3 year old said "I commend myself oh my God" ...????
While it might be a bit exaggerated, most three year olds are pretty keen when it comes to parroting things. No doubt she had heard it said before somewhere
I wonder about that too! You beat me to posting it lol!
Baylie Crowley Yeah, I was thinking that too. An older dying relative must have said it.
@Sue Taft I'm not saying that she wouldn't have been self aware enough to say those exact words. She probably had heard someone say them in a bedtime story, or at someone's bedside. She was self aware enough to recognize that this was an appropriate situation to use and parrot that phrase, most three year olds would be.
Like....I don't get how that's a controversial or wild thing to say, kids parrot stuff all the time when they think it fits a moment. It might be exaggerated too, who knows?
Sue Taft Not like that. How would she know those exact words? Her father probably told her she would be an angel soon and to say her prayers. I don’t know how Catholics do these things but Jews have to say quick prayers before they die. I remember watching a video on the St Jude website and there was a five-year-old boy who’s parents told him he would be an angel soon and he remained calm. It probably went something like that but in a different context. At that age, she cannot know those exact words automatically. Take Baylie’s word for it.
That 3 year old was more articulate with her last words then I have ever been, in my entire life
“By this time she was 24 and was considered rather old to still be unmarried”......while my 21st century 26 year old single self eats Doritos in bed while watching this 😭

I was unmarried and still a virgin at 30... I would be viewed as a spinster I suppose.

Hard to keep track of all these Maria’s
Think of it as a title .. with emphasis on the second or some other pet name - like Liezl, Toni, etc.
I think the worst part is when she recycled the name Elizabeth. I think it would be a slap in the face to her dead daughter. But that is just my opinion.
Joseph Blood yep
@@janejones7638 and Carolina, the name was used three times
Maria Amalia was always my favourite! I loved her willfulness and stayed true to herself.
I have to add that saying Maria Elisabeth had no real interests is parroting what most authors say. She was hugely talented in music, able to play music at a highly technical level, and many of the musical pieces she owned is now with the state (Austria). She was a very gifted soprano too. Maria Amalia and her.
It’s so sad that women were only valued for their looks and ability to produce heirs. :(
Pretty much similar to today except for the producing heirs part...
That's how it was back then hell, it was like that in all countries.

sad for some liberated women of today. They were happy too. If someone show them women on the streets from

fun fact:
my mother adored Maria Theresia and had two daughters.
Youd be correct, as Marie's mother sent her many letters expressing disappointment that Marie wasnt producing children, amoung other things.
There’s two convents in question, I think.
It was another convent -- the more prestigious one that Maria Theresa wanted her to be abbess of.
The Little Renegade, this entire doc. was very full of unverifiable information, not very well researched. I checked the Wiki page link, and....crickets....
YES thank God someone else noticed this
Can you imagine having 10 siblings that all have the same name as you? I feel like that's the ultimate "I'm going to have tons of children and not really care about any of them on a personal level." move.
Their first name's dedicated to the Virgin Mary. All of Maria Theresa's children's first daughters are named after her... except Maria Amalia's for obvious reasons.
They didn't actually get called by their first name. It's like all having the same last name. They went by middle name.
I just realized, I've been with this channel for four years!
It's heart breaking to loose so many children, then they have to keep going on to have more because it's their duty.
Normally, queens were always foreigners, since kings had to marry princesses.
maria amalia was definitely awesome, and had her own mind, not allowing her mother to control her life, respect! :D
Maria Elisabeth’s story seems the most sad; getting smallpox and ruining her beauty.

Do you think Marianna’s ‘pneumonia’ could have actually been active pulmonary tuberculosis (sometimes rarely not fatal), which then went on to Pott’s disease? (Hence the spinal trouble)
Yes! I thought so too. Things were commonly miss diagnosed in those times.
Mimi: the one time a royal lady had her cake and ate it too. You go girl!
@@MonicaTanAnLeng she write a lot
Judith Navarro, thank you. Read that Amalia wrote a lot of poems and letters. Can you please elaborate a bit on what she wrote about?
Who names all their daughters, all 11, Maria though?
Catholics .. and, oddly enough, at one time, also Jews. Miriam and Maria, are often cognomen 'titles' rather than personal names; by Roman and Hebrew conventions, names tended to have a meaning .. rather than just an appealing sound (for the mother). Devotion to Mary, Mother of the Lord Jesus, was very popular and this added to the convention - where males, as well as females, had or took Mary somewhere among their names even in one family .. Mario, for instance.

How could Marie Antoinette have visited her sister in the convent on the way to France in 1770 when Marianna didn't enter the convent until after their mother died in 1780?
Her other sister was in convent by 1770.

You cannot make this stuff up, it's so wild.
Thanks again for another interesting and brilliant video Lindsay! Cant wait for part 2 :)
Just curious, was there a particular reason why all the daughters were named Maria first?
@@sandilou2U You are right about the confusion. Maria Magdalene means Maria from Magdala, that was a place . The bible tells the story that she followed Jesus after he healed her. She stood by him at the cross and belongs to the women who found the emty grave, becoming the first apostola.

@@managerkaren7043 XVIII century gowns weren't comfortable, believe me. I dare to say that they were even less comfortable than XIX century gowns. Maybe the only good part was that the busts they were weren't as tight as the victorian corsets, but I'm not sure because they are shaped differently.
@@raf015_2 you're right. Those dresses from the 18th & 19th centuries...they're beautiful, sure, but as a young woman (I'm almost 19), I wouldn't want to have my bones and organs practically crushed from all the pressure that comes with corsets. I'd also want to breathe. So no thank you.
I would want to wear them for a short time only. To people like us used to modern clothes I’m sure they would be uncomfortable, heavy, and difficult to move/sit down/do anything in.
Mariana's enthusiasm for collecting different types of coins reminded me of the game Murder in the Alps, in which the player collected various types of coins in different locations. Surprisingly, the setting of the game is set in early 20th century Zurich, Austria.

Well this batch (and some others have few children apart form Amalia who has 8). But there is more to come. Leopold especially had ridiculous number of children and Maria Carolina and Ferdinand has plenty too.

In the 1941 movie "The Hamilton Woman" starring Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier queen Maria Carolina of Naples(daughter of Maria Theresa) is described as the real king of Naples not her husband king Ferdinand. This is because she was the effective ruler of the kingdom who introduced liberal reforms -that is when she had to backtrack because of the French Revolution and the execution of her sister Marie Antoinette.
