- Part 2: • Empress Maria Theresa'...
Maria Theresa was one of the most powerful women in history. She reformed and modernized her empire all while having 16 children, 11 of whom were daughters, all named Maria. While the boys were educated to be world leaders the girls were taught to be good consorts and obedient wives though they often choose not to be. 5 died tragically young, two rested power from their husbands and ruled states, three became great patrons of the arts and one, Marie Antionette became Queen of France and lost her head in the revolution.
In this episode:
Maria Carolina
Maria Johanna Gabriela
Maria Josepha
Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples and Sicily
Maria Antonia, Queen of France

The bisexual one is my idol. She was a great ruler loved by her people amidst the French revolution.
For everyone curious, they were all named Maria in the honor of Mary, mother of Jesus. The name was supposed to protect them. And also, they were not all referred to as “Maria”, but with their middle names instead (eg. Antonia, Carolina, Elisabeth, Josepha etc.)
my mother was French Canadian and had three daughters we were all Mary _________ for the reason that Luka has stated. My Uncle was Joseph Jean Pierre and his son was Joseph Jean Paul but we called them Uncle Peter and Paul. The Joseph was in honor of Mary's husband Joseph but I don't know what the Jean was for
Cool! I didn’t know that!
Luka Pecanac my best friend in junior high was Mary Ellen Walton. Not a day went by that someone didn’t shout “goodnight Mary Ellen” or “goodnight Johnboy” in the hallway. Anyhow all women in her family were named Mary with their middle name starting with E. However they all went by both names. They were Catholic. For those who are too young to get the reference there was a show called The Waltons and most shows had them saying goodnight to each other...a sister was named Mary Ellen and the oldest son was Johnboy.

The art style makes all the daughters look so similar it’s odd when some are considered beautiful but some aren’t.
Yeah, I was noticing that. How could anyone tell them apart in the art work? It's only in the personal sketches and such, is when you see personal definable facial features. I rather look at those, then the fancy Royal ones. I get to see who they really are, and not just what the artist and the crown wanted me to see.
Like..... Did you know that Ann Boleyn was kinda unattractive? Even for her time. She had a giant mole on her neck! But we never see that, because of the artistic rendering.
@Altoid Bazingá you are very correct, an artist could be convicted if they produced an "improper portrait" many traits are added and removed to conform to the standards of the day.

Fun fact about Maria Amalia that I have to share:
Despite not getting married to the man she fell in love with, Maria Amalia certainly didn't let history repeat itself and gave her oldest daughter, Carolina, permission to marry the man Carolina loved, Prince Maximilian of Saxony (even though he wasn't an heir to a throne).
That's just awesome.
Amalia most likely remembered what she had to go through in terms of marriage, so she must have wanted to at least spare her daughter what she had endured. I like that story though, that Amalia let her daughter choose to marry who she wanted because Amalia herself had been denied that choice. She's my favorite out of Maria Theresa's daughters
@@twilight-princess240 She's also my favorite, hearing that story in particular was just heartwarming.
Can you image being labeled the most eligible to marry and then suddenly because your family waited too long to be completely unable to be married off??? That's rough
And getting kicked out
I will go out of Quarantine as a very educated woman I guess.

Wow! Marie Antoinette may be the most famous, but her sisters also lead very colorful lives. I love Maria Amalia's life, she was the rebellious daughter who refused to be her mother's puppet.
Her mother was actually quite a loving one. She was just raised with royal values. What is ordinary to us was unthinkable to her standards of living and how a person of status should live
@@UIAL570 She was rather controlling, but then again, the paranoia of ruling a nation can do that to someone.
Popping out 16 children! And then having five of them die very young. Poor lady.
^someone doesn't know how vaginas work^
Ok
@Flibbertigibbet6 it wasn't funny. I'm of the opinion that anything CAN be funny but your joke just wasn't 🤷♀️
@Flibbertigibbet6 fair. I think, and maybe this is too in depth for a RUclips comment but I'm self quarantined bc of Corvid-19 anyway - but the context is important. Of course I can't imply that you're a misogynist from one joke - but context is so important for a joke to work. One, like, biologically it is the male/sperm that actually dictates the gender of the offspring. So thinking about how this poor lady had 16 kids and it wasn't even her fault that they weren't eligible heirs is already not very funny of a subject. AND THEN, on tOP OF THAT, the fact that for most of history daughters/women were valued as less is also not that funny. So like, if we're talking about punching up and down, the joke just goes nowhere. If half of your audience is women, which it probably is skewed more towards women on this channel, ya' gotta think about the audience. Yeah it's just a RUclips comment but this like applies to everything. You can be edgy, but you gotta be tastefully edgy. Put that zest on there. Hopefully I don't die of coronavirus bye.
@Flibbertigibbet6 not an excuse - I expect HIGH QUALITY HUMOR IN THE COMMENTS.
Isn’t that sad that the prettiest daughter had all those issues in marrying not to her fault! And then that she got sick and “lost” her beauty. So much for being a beautiful person on the inside! So sad.....
Yeah but In the end she partied hard so art lease there is that
I think Maria Elisabeth had the best life of them all. She did what she liked and had no real responsibilities too except a few ones when her brother Leopold assigned her some responsibilities.
@@toadsupportgroup9839 Mimi had a "blissful marriage and bonny court". Doesn't sound so bad.
@@MonicaTanAnLeng yes but she went from being the most eligible to losing her looks and at that point she couldn't marry at all anymore. Why do you think she partied and gained so much weight? Because she was happy with her life? I highly doubt that. Her life was tragic.
@@ruth078, Maria Elisabeth was unhappy because she wasn’t given any position by her mother and brother Joseph II, not because she was unmarried. Leopold II made that clear in his diary after their brother Maximilian was assured the Archbishop-Elector position. Liesl threw a huge tantrum right after that because everyone in the family was appointed to some kind of position, whether direct or through marriage, whereas she wasn’t. It was a position she was after, not marriage. And there could have been, like in Prague or in Hungary. Even with the centralization policy. And she particularly didn’t want to be left as a “nobody” in Joseph II’s court, a brother who was not nice to her. It was clear to her that there were possible concessions but her mother and brother won’t do it. In Innsbruck, she was in some sort of First Lady social role, and when Leopold assumed the family head role, she was given a more prominent role and a bigger allowance. You see the old Elisabeth back in Innsbruck vs the one in Vienna after the smallpox. And gaining weight later on was a family trait - their parents and most of the siblings got fat, and not necessarily because they were miserable. And she still had royal suitors, post smallpox. Karl of Zweibrucken - hahaha- and her cousin Benedetto of Savoy. Karl could not be considered due to the Bavaria issue (just like in sister Amalia’s case) and MT and Joseph did not want to be generous to a Liesl-Benedetto match, like they did with Mimi and her penniless prince. And Amalia and Liesl liked parties so that habit was already there, pre smallpox. She also sort of adopted a baby girl.
“Maria, did you steal my dress?!”

Wait you're telling me a 3 year old said "I commend myself oh my God" ...????
While it might be a bit exaggerated, most three year olds are pretty keen when it comes to parroting things. No doubt she had heard it said before somewhere
I wonder about that too! You beat me to posting it lol!
Baylie Crowley Yeah, I was thinking that too. An older dying relative must have said it.
@Sue Taft I'm not saying that she wouldn't have been self aware enough to say those exact words. She probably had heard someone say them in a bedtime story, or at someone's bedside. She was self aware enough to recognize that this was an appropriate situation to use and parrot that phrase, most three year olds would be.
Like....I don't get how that's a controversial or wild thing to say, kids parrot stuff all the time when they think it fits a moment. It might be exaggerated too, who knows?
Sue Taft Not like that. How would she know those exact words? Her father probably told her she would be an angel soon and to say her prayers. I don’t know how Catholics do these things but Jews have to say quick prayers before they die. I remember watching a video on the St Jude website and there was a five-year-old boy who’s parents told him he would be an angel soon and he remained calm. It probably went something like that but in a different context. At that age, she cannot know those exact words automatically. Take Baylie’s word for it.
I think Amalia and I would have gotten along famously
Why?

I have to add that saying Maria Elisabeth had no real interests is parroting what most authors say. She was hugely talented in music, able to play music at a highly technical level, and many of the musical pieces she owned is now with the state (Austria). She was a very gifted soprano too. Maria Amalia and her.
Can you imagine having 10 siblings that all have the same name as you? I feel like that's the ultimate "I'm going to have tons of children and not really care about any of them on a personal level." move.
Their first name's dedicated to the Virgin Mary. All of Maria Theresa's children's first daughters are named after her... except Maria Amalia's for obvious reasons.
They didn't actually get called by their first name. It's like all having the same last name. They went by middle name.
Mimi was definitely doing her sister in law and then she convinced her other brother to give her his son, omg good for her! I love how everyone was mad at Maria Amalia for being willful and bold but she actually ended up being a perfect political match for her quiet husband who just wanted to play with his kids all day. I bet he was thrilled to let her lead the country, most people don't neatly fit into their gender roles and many people lack the temperament needed to lead a country!
Hard to keep track of all these Maria’s
Think of it as a title .. with emphasis on the second or some other pet name - like Liezl, Toni, etc.
I think the worst part is when she recycled the name Elizabeth. I think it would be a slap in the face to her dead daughter. But that is just my opinion.

It's heart breaking to loose so many children, then they have to keep going on to have more because it's their duty.
Maria Elisabeth’s story seems the most sad; getting smallpox and ruining her beauty.
How could the daughters of a powerful empress not live lavishly when they controlled all that land...Marie Antoinette lived as a French queen, when her time arrived to be crowned, and then retreated with her kids away from court so she wouldn't have to appear always "puffed up" and "dressed to the nines" as the women in Versailles had to. Marie Antoinette was a foreigner in France even with the title of queen!
Normally, queens were always foreigners, since kings had to marry princesses.

I’m a little bit confused about the timeline in this video how could Marie Antoinnette have visited her sisters in the convent if they didn’t move to the convent until their mother was dead? Their mother was definitely alive when Marie Antoinette went to France to become the queen.
Youd be correct, as Marie's mother sent her many letters expressing disappointment that Marie wasnt producing children, amoung other things.
There’s two convents in question, I think.
It was another convent -- the more prestigious one that Maria Theresa wanted her to be abbess of.

In my family´s art collection are two original oil paintings from this time period since many generations. One is from 1759 and shows Maria Anna when she was around 20 years old. The other one is from 1766 and shows Marie Antoinette at the age of 11.
This paintings are completely unknown in public circles.
The painting of Marie Antoinette is truly lightening up the room, everything that meets the eye emanates refined, serene harmony, while the one of Maria Anna is giving you an impression of loneliness, sadness and resignation.
Marie Antoinette was painted by Johann Sigismund Friedrich, 2. Fürst von Khevenhüller-Metsch, a Habsburg family friend and Envoy of the Austrian Emperor in Portugal and Torino. The painter of Maria Anna is unknown. I would very much like to show you this beautiful paintings but unfortunately it is not possible to post them here.

Greetings from Germany :)
What a lovely treasure to have!
Wow! Those are priceless!

Wow!
Well, Maria Amalia is what the queen got for being a manipulative mother:))
Agree. Maria Theresa was likely so angry at her own ‘failures’ in Parma, she didn’t even want to hear anything about it (circa 1777-78).
Amalia's my favorite out of all the Archduchesses. She always had my sympathy because of her abysmal relationship with Maria Theresa, and my sympathy for her only grew after I discovered that she was married against her will to the Duke of Parma. I always wonder if her relationship with Maria Theresa might have improved at least a little had she been allowed to marry for love like her sister Maria Christina. Oh well, we'll never know. But I do find it interesting that despite her terrible relationship with Maria Theresa, Amalia was kind of like her in the sense that she was the real ruler of Parma like her mother in Austria. It was something interesting to learn and worth noticing.
However, the daughter I have the most complex feelings for is Maria Christina. Initially, I had liked her to a degree, seeing as how she was a huge sponsor of the arts and the like, but once I found out she was Maria Theresa's favorite and how the favoritism was painfully obvious...well, all I can say is that my opinion changed drastically. It's because if there's one thing I absolutely can't stand, it's favoritism that a parent has towards only one of their children. But then I realized that even if Christina was the obvious favorite, to the point where she was able to marry for love while her sisters could not, it really isn't her fault. She didn't choose to be her mother's favorite, and really, any of the kids could have been Maria Theresa's favorite. The favorite just so happened to be Christina. So in the end, even if I still don't like Christina to a degree because of her being her mother's obvious favorite and I understand how her siblings felt towards her because of it, I remind myself that it's really Maria Theresa's fault for even playing favorites in the first place, not because Christina wanted to be the favorite. Everything in the world is full of gray borders, after all. Nothing's black and white.
Don’t worry, Maria Amalia loved her husband very much. Role of Karl of Zweibrucken was greatly exaggerated in the books. Yes, it wasn’t Mimi’s fault she was the favorite but she was really unpleasant to her siblings and even to their mother. One would think that with all those advantages, she can be more generous in spirit but she wasn’t. And that made me dislike her. Her dowry was not from her mother but from her brother Joseph’s inheritance from their father. Joseph was the sole heir and he allotted part of it for the establishment of his siblings. Mimi got half of the amount allotted.
@@MonicaTanAnLeng she write a lot
Judith Navarro, thank you. Read that Amalia wrote a lot of poems and letters. Can you please elaborate a bit on what she wrote about?
@@MonicaTanAnLeng No she did not, and nor should she be expected to, considering that the marriage was arranged. It is well known that Amalia hade her mother for forcing her in to an arranged marriage. Amalia is worthy of great admiration, oposing a repressing system of arranged marriage denying women sexual freedom, by having lovers. Within that system, she was a true role model.
@@kimm.8800, I read her letters to close friends as translated in a 1932 biography on her. The letters were from several Italian noble families’ archives, if I remember it right. She loved her husband despite being in an arranged marriage. Their marriage wasn’t without problems but it was clear that she did.
Maria Amalia was an absolute legend!
Why didn’t we have a “Maria Theresa’s Grandchildren” series? She had plenty.
Maria Anna needs a movie or mini series about her. She'd be quite the role model for young girls
People love Marie Antoinette precisely because she was average. She was a parody of Versailles. The idea of a political figure being intellectually unimpressive and thinking about gossip, clothes, food, and perfume, intrigues people. Her admirers love that she is average and yet at the centre of attention. She was the truth of the aristocratic system and I think deep down she knew what her purpose was.
Maria Anna would not gravitate toward that kind of materialistic environment if Versailles. She represents the ideal of the aristocracy. The best and brightest in Europe. The noble breed.
Always a pleasure to watch this channel!! Thank you so much for your hard work ❤️
In the 1941 movie "The Hamilton Woman" starring Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier queen Maria Carolina of Naples(daughter of Maria Theresa) is described as the real king of Naples not her husband king Ferdinand. This is because she was the effective ruler of the kingdom who introduced liberal reforms -that is when she had to backtrack because of the French Revolution and the execution of her sister Marie Antoinette.
