I was supposed to be looking for someone else. But when I Googled Eleonora's name, I stared in disbelief at what came up: a bunch of references to a vampire princess.
WTactualF.
Turns out, I was about to stumble down a historical rabbit hole that involved a real-life vampire panic, a woman with a fascinating life, and one of my favorite books of all time.
Hang onto your hats, folks.

I tell stories about tiaras and the fascinating royal women who wore them. Join me as I follow these tiaras across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and-sometimes-into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.

I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

Erzbest Bathory the 'blood countess ' was the possible inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula as was Vlad the Templar .
Yes, I've seen lots of mentions of Vlad as an inspiration! A couple other sources I saw mentioned another possible inspiration: his mother's experience during a typhoid epidemic (the bloodless look of the victims' corpses, in particular). It's a very interesting topic.
She's not mentioned in Stoker's notes, which have resurfaced a couple of years back. The name 'Dracula' is, but there's no suggestion Stoker dove in to Vlad the Impaler's life. He simply liked the name better than "Count Wampire" - something we should be grateful for.

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked Eleonora's story - I love her. You know, it's funny about the tiara...I almost went and got one, but I'd already recorded a couple segments, and then I thought it would be weird if a tiara just magically appeared. Maybe next time I'll do it, just to surprise you. 👑

Yes, Brazil has some fascinating royal women - I remember reading a book that talked about Leopoldina when I was a little girl, and I've never forgotten her. I also stumbled onto Amélie of Leuchtenberg, who married Pedro I. That whole family is very interesting to me!

You're very welcome! After researching this, Prague is definitely on my must-see list. Were you able to go inside the St. Vitus Cathedral? I really want to go see Jan Nepomucky's tomb and say thank you, just like Adam and Eleonora did.

Vlad Tsepes was the inspiration for Dracula. He was a member of the order of Draculae, the word actually meant Dragon, it only got it's "devil" link much later, probably around the time of Stoker's book.
That's why it was so odd to see Eleonora described as a possible inspiration. Vlad Tsepes was one of the primary inspirations, and I've also seen several recent studies that link imagery in the book to Stoker's mother's descriptions of a typhoid epidemic during her childhood. An interesting topic, for sure.

I didn't realise they tried to impose her as inspiration for Dracula (which is generally agreed to be between Vlad Tepes and Erzsebet Bathory), but instead that she was inspiration for the poem 'Lenore' which is generally taken as super early proto-vampire literature

Did the Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed/Ecsedi Báthory Erzsébet get a similar treatment, do you think? Sorry if there’s already a video on this. I’m a new subscriber, so haven’t seen all of the content yet.
I haven't researched Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, so I can't say for sure. I don't believe anything relating to vampirism was on the list of crimes she was charged with. That was an exaggeration that happened later - a rumor that she had been murdering young women and bathing in their blood to retain her youthful appearance. At the time, investigations centered on the terrible ways she tortured men and women to death. I don't think anyone thought a sickness was turning her into a vampire, which was the rumor with Eleonora.
Fun fact Bohemia is in the Czech Republic. That's where we get the term Bohemian as an term for free spirit and a definition of style.

I'm incredibly shy, so recording these posts seemed much easier than filming myself, lecture-style. You are welcome ! I am a bit older and learned that most nice and modest people do not realise their qualities as easyly as some ruffians would. Which is a pitty, because life goes fast and you miss chances and perhaps nice opportunities.

The invention of the internet has given us all so much! I'm grateful to live in this age, when I can make recordings and blog posts and videos and use them to connect with people. one small correction: charles VI. had already had a son, his first child with his wife Elizabeth. This child however died in infancy (as far as I know in the first two years after his birth). So yes, the only living children were daughters :-)
Concerning th "Austrian Empire" (very short summary, since this is a bit complicated): Austria was an Achrchduchy (invented title since the 14th century because of the Habsburg Rudolf's IV. forgery "pirivilegium maius" - was legalized by another Habsburg about a century later). The Archedukes also later became Kings of Bohemia and Hungary. The title "emperor" comes from the Holy Roman Empire whose elected king (elected until the Habsburgs made it hereditary) could also adopt the title of empereror and ruled over all other lands in his domain. After charls VI. his daughther Maria Theresia could inherit all crown exept the Holy Roman Crown because of the "Pragmatische Sanktion", which was heavily contested at the beginning of her reign and resultet in war (Schlesische Kriege). The title of Holy Roman Emperor could only be passed down to male heirs. Since there were none, Maria Theresias husbend was crowned as emperor. So MT was an Archduchess and Queen but technically only empress by marriage.

RUclips to the rescue! I looked up all the names I didn't know how to pronounce to find videos where native speakers pronounced them. Jan Nepomucký came up multiple times in a filmed city tour of Prague - it was hard to call that homework because it was fun to watch! :)

Vampire princes🤩
I love converting these historical currencies for context. These gilders at the time of Eleonora would've been 2.5 grammes of "fine gold". So her dowry would've been the equivalent of 2,972,000 Yankee greenbacks at the time of the market closing today, 29 September 2023. A thing you didn't mention, the Emperor paid her what we'd call a "weregeld" in English of 5,000 gilders. That's a nice retirement fund. Keep in mind your average European day labourer from this period would have been making a whole 700 2023 dollars per year if he really busted his hump.

They sure picked a weird woman to make a vampire. No slight to Eleonora, but what exactly is vampiric about dying of cervical cancer in your late 50s/early 60s in the 1700s? A lot of nobility died similarly, not to mention ordinary folks. And if the heart being separate from the body is the smoking gun, wouldn't her husband be a vampire too? Very strange.
I'm with you...the whole vampire thing makes no sense. She was eccentric, sure, what with all those miracle cures she tried. Eccentric women didn't fare well in terms of gossip in...well, most centuries, but especially before modern medicine could explain those symptoms.

I think she's right to say "quote" and "end quote". Not everyone is reading along with the video; some are just listening and it is very helpful in that regard.

@@TheGirlintheTiara you don't have that problem, just find a way to phrase it so it's easy for the less discerning listener to figure out,e.g according to her/she was known to have said "Jimmy was a happy boy,always playful" so on and so forth,your smart ,you'll figure it out but for us historians it's very annoying to hear quote,en quote spoken aloud

Great content but you can actually give away with just narration. It's kind of an overkill with having what you are saying also displayed in the video. It would be more engaging if you provide more pictures or videos than words you are already narrating. Also, the random video clip inserts of yourself is kind of awkward?

This channel is going down the tubes. What with the face shots of the narrator sliced in in totally inappropriate places, sticking out her tongue (yuck) and using the words "shitty" and "dragged his ass" this channel has completely lost its dignity. Maybe the narrator/creator will rethink the way she's handling the topics these days.
One small gripe. Please don't describe anything in the 18th century as a "rock and roll" lifestyle. It sounds really bizarre. Otherwise, it's a really good vid. 👍

On the contrary, I like the modernization of various terms to describe things in history, it makes us understand it in a more modern context! The swearing also helps.
TryinaD It's not not just modernisation it's also Americanisation even though the subject matter is specifically European. It would be equally strange if you described the tenure of a popular early US president as bringing la belle epoque to Washington. Most Americans would go "huh?" This channel is so good that I'm sure its viewership goes well beyond the US.

@@Clodaghbob I’m pretty sure I’ve heard that to describe American history though, going both ways is perfectly fine as long as the people understand (like if it was a lecture on Washington to European audiences, and vice versa in this case) I wouldn’t expect lessons in Chinese history to use untranslated concepts after all.
You probably should also look up localization vs translation, that’s also another way this works well.
