      @@jenniferdove9215 when Dame Margaret Greville passed away, the tiara was passed down to her dear friend the Queen Mother until her death in 2002, upon which the tiara went to Queen Elizabeth II. The tiara is not exactly a Kokoshnik, but styled as a Kokoshnik with stunning Pave cut diamonds.
      Princess Eugenie was expected to wear the York tiara, but opted for the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara specifically to honor her mother's Irish heritage.

    • @hippiebippie8870

      @@jenniferdove9215 there are two tiaras, that we know of, that Lady Greville left to Queen Elizabeth Queen Mum. One is the Greville Bucheron Honey Comb tiara, an all diamond piece that was a favorite by the Queen Mum and now worn by Camilla... The other tiara is an emerald kokoshnik tiara that no royal member had worn in public before Princess Eugenie wore it on her wedding day. That emerald kokoshnik is called the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik.
      There was also a pair of earrings of mixed cut diamonds that was given to the Queen called the Greville Pear Drops and a ruby and diamond floral necklace called the Greville Ruby Necklace that she also received as a wedding gift that Kate has worn recently

    • @XenusMama
      @XenusMama 2 года назад +2

      Princess Eugenie made many bold statements for her 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank. She wore a custom-designed Peter Pilotto wedding dress that showed off her childhood scoliosis scar; she didn't select a traditional long veil, as is customary for royal weddings; and she borrowed the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara from her grandmother, the Queen. Though ardent fans of the royal family are likely familiar with this tradition, it is still worth noting that the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara was the first one that Princess Eugenie had ever worn. In the royal family, tiaras are customarily reserved for married women.

    The Emerald tiara becomes strangely significant when you remember that Ella’s niece, Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna of Russia, the Tsar’s second daughter, was being considered as a bride for Alexander of Yugoslavia, and wrote letters to him during the war.. small royal world haha, and when you consider that Mignon’s older brother Carol was considered as a match for Olga

    • @TheGirlintheTiara
      @TheGirlintheTiara  3 года назад +1

      There's so much depth to that story - thanks for adding those details! I knew Carol and Olga were a possible match (which she scuttled when they visited the Romanian royal family in 1914). But I didn't know about Tatiana and Alexander of Yugoslavia - that's super interesting. Wow, very small royal world, as you said. :)

    • @BluePenguin200

      @@TheGirlintheTiara No problem!:) I’m already obsessed with your videos and cannot wait for more! Alexander’s father asked Nicholas II for one of the Grand Duchesses to marry Alexander, but Nicholas said he would let his daughters choose whom they would marry, but acknowledged that he noticed Alexander particularly gazing at Tatiana during family gatherings. I believe this was around 1914, or at least during the First World War, since they wrote letters throughout her captivity, and so it’s likely that she at least considered it. Just wanted to add some more! The Belgian and Danish Royal families around 1910 actually also hoped that either Maria or Anastasia would marry their heirs to their thrones, a fact which is quite forgotten too (due to the two being close in age to Leopold III and Frederick IX)

    • @TheGirlintheTiara

      @@BluePenguin200 Thank you for all this additional detail - it's fantastic! Do you happen to remember which sources mentioned Alexander and Tatiana? If I don't have them, I need to add them to my collection. (Another Ikea bookshelf order will be placed in 5, 4, 3, 2...) ;)

      @@TheGirlintheTiara Helen Rappaport I think at least briefly mentions Alexander in her book about the Romanovs sisters, stating: “Tatiana was also the object of an informal approach by Nikola Pasic, the Serbian prime minister, on behalf of the King, for his son Prince Alexander. “ I’m not sure if she mentions any more about him, since I don’t own that book, but it’s possible.
      James A. Moncure states in “Research Guide to European Historical Biography”: “As a young man Alexander showed no real interest in women […] but it was likewise rumoured that Tatiana, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, adored him.”
      Tatiana’s diary entry from January 17, 1914 also states:
      “Had lessons in the morning. Dined with Papà, Aunt Ella, Alexander P[etrovich] of Serbia (Ioannchik’s brother-in-law) and Kostya.”
      There may be more sources, some of them I believe are in Serbian, but I’m sure if you do enough digging you’ll find some:) There are possibly more diary entries to look into as well. It’s also said that Alexander was distraught over her assassination. There does exist a Draft Letter to the Tsar, from Serbia’s prime minister that mentions the negotiation of marriage, for one of the daughters of the tsar, and Nicholas’ written response was about how he’ll let his daughters choose, but that he noticed Alexander looking at Tatiana during family dinners:) I believe Alexander, Tatiana, and Nicholas’ Wikipedia pages have some sources in footnotes too

I'm in touch with a lady who helps Helen Azar translate and publish the Romanov girls' diaries, so I'll reach out to her and see if she can add any more info for us. I don't know why I'm so fascinated by the Tatiana/Alexander connection. And boy howdy, no one could blame Alexander for looking at her during those family dinners - she was gorgeous!

    this is very off topic, but the info about the children in the concentration camps reminded me of it. The three children (two boys and one girl) of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (whose killing started WWI) were living in Austria when the Anschluss happened. The two men were openly opposed to Hitler, so he threw them into concentration camps. At the end of the war they were both freed, although they had health problems the rest of their lives.
    Ella and Sergei were unhappy because Sergei was cold, unemotional, archconservative, hyper-religious, and was yet another Romanov male who liked hanging out in the single-sex Russian banyas.

    • @TheGirlintheTiara
      @TheGirlintheTiara  3 года назад +3

      Funny you should mention the children of Franz Ferdinand - this morning, I just started reading a book about what happened to them (Hitler and Habsburgs). It's fascinating so far. According to the author, after the Anschluss, those two men were the first Hitler ordered into a camp. He was clearly making a statement with that order. I'm enjoying that book so far.

      So glad you enjoyed the video! The connection to Luxembourg comes through Grand Duke Adolph's only daughter, Hilda. She had a kokoshnik tiara, which she wore as the Grand Duchess of Baden. So Hilda's kokoshnik never actually belonged to a reigning Grand Duchess of Luxembourg - but they *do* have another tiara that might be of Russian origin (through Adolph's first wife) and has the familiar kokoshnik shape. That one's referred to as Grand Duchess Adelaide's tiara. You can see it here: www.luxarazzi.com/2012/10/the-grand-duchess-adelaide-tiara.html

    "Stab a bitch..." I laughed out loud. And you're the first I've heard note the lack of Russian blood in the Romanovs. German prince Peter of Holstein-Gottorp's mother was a daughter of Peter the Great, making him the heir of the childless Empress Elizabeth of Russia. He was married to Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg who deposed him, murdered him, and became Catherine the Great. Peter had been sickly and alcoholic, tortured animals and was probably impotent. Their child, Paul, was likely fathered by a Polish count known to be Catherine's lover. I think I'm safe in saying each subsequent generation of the now Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov dynasty married protestant German princesses. Penultimate Tsar Alexander III married princess Dagmar of Denmark--her blood and royal house were also German. Despite all this...the Russian Imperials who disliked the last Tsarina, Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt, called her "the German." They were all German. Bizarre.
