    I'm aware that a lot of the lights I'm showing here are a bit on the pricey side (The Aputure MC being my new favourite!) However, if you reach out in the comments, i'll have suggestions for *cheaper* options available.

    • @530jeffro

      Yes, listing any cheaper alternatives would be greatly appreciated. Anyone sitting at your table is truly lucky, by the way. Phenomenal.

      @@530jeffro Thanks so much for watching! There are a lot of options for getting some colored lighting. The ones in the video are all battery powered and compact, so they're great for portability. If you go down in price you may have a few more cables to plug in and they may not have smart phone control.
      Ambient lights
      On another video on the channel, i mostly light a table with a couple of those Wave lights ruclips.net/video/1Ru0OIpbH70/видео.html . RGB flood lights are good too, but they dont have as soft/diffused lighting. The wave lights and flood lights can range from $20-$30 (AUS dollars). I have also seen something like some RGB ring lights from Neewer with a remote control that could have some softer diffusion.
      Spot lights
      There are cheaper brand of lumecubes, such as Ulanzi, but i have also used something like this pin spot before for a focus area, the edges on the spotlight area will be a bit harder www.amazon.com/dp/B075WSTGVK/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_R330KF2DQKYW28PKCYZH

    Those are all great tips!
    My biggest problem with fancy light during a game session is that you necessarily have to have a fully darkened room to work with. This is not a problem during winter (dark half of year). But after summer time switch all lights are less usable in my place. My gaming table is located in such a place that it's nearly impossible to have it dark enough.
    This is why I look at your wonders with envy. :P Therefore I put more stress on music.
    But I've tried and got a RGB ambient light (as you've shown). It is great for my Wampire game, with blue hue over the room.
    P.S.
    I'm sending your channel to my friends. This needs a lot more views!

      Yeah those Lumecubes are great lights, I'll often set and forget those, so not a lot of adjusting during a game (and they do have a smartphone app control). If you'd like a bunch of more affordable options, just give a hollar in the comments. For instance, small LED spotlights for Christmas village displays can get a similar effect.

      If you're aiming for something bigger but still portable, one of my favorites is using a microphone stand geni.us/BMzAq and super clamps geni.us/qhs7VT. The stand get some decent height on it (and the boom can be rotated to become a T bar), just make sure to have a sand bag on the bottom to keep it from falling. Nylon clamps are also good to keep cables organised.

    I love all your lighting set ups and have experimented with room lighting. I would love some advice as to suggestions to keep character sheets readable- my instant thought is LED USB reading lights- have you ever explored this or do you have any tips for solving this problem?

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад

      Thanks buddy! The lighting in this video will work in an average lit room, but obviously will be more dramatic in a darkened/dim room. For pen/paper visibility around the table i have used Pin spots mounted on the ceiling to create small lit areas for their dice and reading.
      Another less complicated alternative is some flat reading lights. They dont spill light as much as regular reading lights do (i think you can get them in different sizes) www.amazon.com/dp/B083NT67VK/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_CNHRF3FVJVFBA9WN7KC5

    Awesome videos, thanks heaps! I've got RGBW PAR light after watching it and am wondering if it is possible to create an irregular lightning flash effect using the remote or menu commands on the back of the light itself without having to use a DMX controller? Cheers :)

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  Год назад

      Thanks for watching! If your light has a sound mode you could have it next to a speaker playing lightning sounds and the sounds would trigger the flashes (although it might change colour while flashing). That said, the real benefit of DMX lights is using them with a controller for animations and scenes. If you're looking for something simpler to control, something like the pocket RGB panel has preset lighting animations like lightning, fire, police sirens etc. The one I use is the Aputure MC RGBWW. There might be cheaper alternative brands that have similar modes, but I've found the MC to have really decent brightness and animations.

    Loved your Video, already got some ideas from your other videos :) !
    I was thinking of getting one of those DJ Water Effect lights for my Board, but what would you recommend for an Industrial Light mood? Something like the Metal Hallways in Alien, with flickering Yellow/Orange Lights. I wanted to get some Tealights before and wrap some painter's mesh tape from a distance to get some of the grid patterns onto the board, with the light flickering in the back, but the tealights are way too weak to be casting good light from a distance.

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much! This is an awesome question, big fan of the alien movies so i got a good picture of what you mean. The tealights in this video arent bad for this, they even have a strobe feature which pulses on and off. I've also seen some potentially brighter strobing LED's that are Deep sea fishing lures, but i'm not sure how big/small they are.
      Could also work some LED lighting strips under some knitting mesh if you...actually reminds me of some sci fi terrain i was making on the crazy crafter livestream ruclips.net/video/l_7g2ubXyCU/видео.html I had 3d printed a bunch of sci fi bits from miscast

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад +2

      Ah the smoke 😄 I assume you're talking about the smoke machine fog chiller. I use a water based fog fluid and I've had very little if any residue on my terrain, with any residue only building up in the cooling chamber or near the main pipe exit covered by cheese cloth.
      If you have the terrain on some cardstock or paper, you might see some outlines of where the terrain was placed. However on standard neoprene or vinyl battlemats, I haven't seen any discolouration or residue.

    Would any of these lighting techniques still be beneficial in a room with full, white, fluorescent-esce room lighting?
    I play at a local game store, so I don't have control over darkening the ambient lighting of the room.

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! If the game environment is lit mostly like a common office, my guess is it would be more muted with most of the coloured lighting effecting what ever's closest to the lights. So, less dramatic than in the examples in this video.

  •  3 года назад +1

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад +1

      Yeah these are a no name brand. These are selfie stands for smartphones, the important aspect about them is they need a 1/4 inch thread to attach the lights to. Some of these types of stands have detachable smartphone mounts so you can access that screw. Have any suggestions for alternatives to the Neewer SL70-APP?
    I'm okay without some of the fancier features (I can go without app integration). I've seen some similar looking options floating around on amazon in the ~$30~ range. I just don't know which option would be best for a D&D purpose, or what aspects I should be looking for to help me decide between similar options.

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  2 года назад +1

      For sure there are some cheaper options out there. The main reason I like the app controlled ones is it's easier to adjust color brightness, and means you don't have to touch the light after it's placed. That said, if you're not fussed about fiddling with the light, searching amazon for "RGBW Video Panel Light" will show a bunch of options. Other than looking at the reviews, some things i would consider when looking would be:
      RGB and White Color modes
      Animated Lighting Effects
      Dimmable
      Threaded Tripod mounting point
      Battery Life (and if it can still be active when usb charging)
      Light Diffusion (Some lights either have a frosted panel, or an attachable diffuser)

    Would you say that 2 ambient lights and a focus light are the essential or can we get away with less and still have great results?

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад +1

      It really depends on the look you're after. I think in this video I'm showing some key principles, so you can totally pick and choose what works for your setup. If I were to chose a bare minimum however, I would keep some way of lighting the board with 2 ambient lights, I've also done this on the channel with 2 of those wave light's if you're after a cheaper option.
      The ambient light setup here is playing off the lighting principle of a key light and a fill light, meaning if you just had one light there would be a lot of shadow. The second light is filling in those shadows a bit more. That said, 1 light can produce a very dramatic look.

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад

      Thank you, yeah you might be able to still find some floating around. They are discontinued from Neewer as they're now pushing their SL80's. Bit sad cause those SL70's were a bit more affordable...maybe because they were trying to clear that stock. The SL80 is still a good light, but at that higher price I would pay that bit extra to get the aputure MC. A lot more robust in terms of control and quality.

    Have you had players complain they had to look into those spot or ambient lights all the time, while sitting at the table ?

    • @Atmoseeker
      @Atmoseeker  3 года назад +1

      No complaints personally, but I've been able to minimize player glare by having them angled more down (parallel to the board) than up or away from the players. Changing the height of the lights can help too. The aputure MC comes with a rubber diffuser as well that helps minimize glare too, (some other models include that feature as well. )
