Janet is right though about Game Pass, this is not the Xbox of a year or so ago even. They are finding success now and a lot of it, more than ever before which is different from the Xbox that wanted Game Pass on Playstation a year+ ago.
Between that and FPS boost and back compat commitment, its been hard to justify purchasing games on my PS5.

I decided to pick up a Series X this gen largely due to Game Pass and that PS5 didn’t have a must have exclusive for me (that I can’t play on my PS4 Pro). I’ll pick up a PS5 once GoW Ragnarok comes out. Haven’t had an Xbox since the 360 and so far I’m loving what Xbox have done this gen. Having access to games like Flight Simulator, Halo Infinite and Hitman trilogy have been a bargain on Gamepass, I’ve got more games on the go than what the cost of the Series X if I bought the games full price. Sony have a lot to do to match that value proposition and I’m sure they will in due time, competition is great for us gamers.

1:31:21 Blessing, how can you think the opposite. To use simple numbers, if two companies have 50/50 split of the market, they both sell games and sell consoles. If one dies, and there's still an appitite for games from the audience, they will then use the other service and buy their games from there.
If Xbox had a magic wand, Playstation would disapeaar and vice versa. I think it's incredibly niave to think otherwise. Everyone want's to be the one stop shop for the products they make.

This is an episode I wished an actual analyst was brought on board. A lot of subjective thinking without an understanding of the business models or how the numbers are broken out.
Janet just a fact correction. The type of EA Play service that is apart of GamePass is the base version that only has a time cap on new game releases but allows 10-hour trials and is only included in GamePass Ultimate. Just wanted to clarify that for you.
I was going to say, I've played multiple games to completion through ea play/gamepass and I've never encountered a time restraint on anything!

The key to making guardians of the Galaxy combat fun is increasing the difficulty. It becomes more strategic. Similar for most games as normal modes in modern times is easy mode.

As a huge Xbox fan I don't think Sony has to respond, especially if CoD is not exclusive. If CoD remains multiplatform I don't think Game Pass alone will convince many PS fans to get an Xbox.

To add to what Blessing was saying, in that future of subscriptions, what if Game Pass becomes available on PS, and Project Spartacus is then available on Xbox? That would be a good future to live in. You can support the companies you like the most by buying the box, like you can buy a Chromecast or a Fire Stick (and others), but with the subscription services you can support all the developers and not be denied access to games because of the box you bought, like it today with the exclusives.

@@MrXmoda I own both... heck most systems but yeah I get a little too excited about this stuff :) . At the end of the day it is just games, but I think my excitement for what Janet was saying is I sometimes feel I am in the twilight zone for how people talk about Phil when the company is buying up studios. Like I get it, they are saying and so far doing all the right things to get the gamers on their side, but acquisitions are rarely done so it can help competition. I just appreciated her take on it calling it out.
@@simplymincy I can admit I definitely lean more into the xbox/pc eco system than my PS and Switch so for me personally it has been really nice as Phil Spencer has risen to be inarguably the best leader for Xbox and what other game companies should strive toward. All the praise for Phil and his team I feel has been warranted and most of the negatives are just about what could happen down the line and not what Phil is and has been doing the past years.
@@MrXmoda Totally agree. All his actions thus far as you said have been great for gamers. I think my distrust comes from working in the web startup world and seeing these same charismatic people do all the right things at first to win over customers then crush the competition with monopoly like practices. I also think Xbox one left such a bad taste in peoples mouth that they are desperate to get back the faith of the community. So, I am hoping you are right and that he truly sees Nintendo and Sony as partners in gaming and will continue to cut deals so gamers win as a whole. At the end those 3 companies have to work and keep pushing each other. Otherwise it will just be Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple which is not a great future imo.
To me I think less people are likely to purchase a SECONDARY console for Call of Duty except for those who are hardcore Call of Duty players. I personally feel Call of Duty is always a best seller is because that’s the one game out of touch parents or romantic partners have heard of and the one game most employees at stores will recommend.
So I feel like they may see less people running to Game Pass for Call of Duty specifically may be a lot less than they are expecting.
Not sure Blessing will see this, but to anyone playing Nier Replicant ver1.22 sure Ending D might seem like doing a lot (really not too much though to be honest) for just a cutscene, but most importantly for this remake is it enables you to go after Ending E which is an extremely significant chunk of gameplay and one of the best sequences in the series, more than just cutscenes that can be watched on RUclips!

Janet’s explanation of EA Play being timed trials in gamepass is wrong isn’t it? I’ve never encountered a timer from EA games with the exception of the yearly Madden trial you get a few days before release but that’s something different entirely
Ye I haven't seen any time trials. Its just the back catalogue rather than any brand new games.

In terms of CoD, the perfect in-between would be to make them, say, every year and a half or two, and have every other CoD be exclusive, but every other title be multi-platform. So, make some exclusive, and others multi-platform. I think that would be a win-win, and slowly push people to goto xbox so as not to miss out on the exclusive ones, without pissing off those that refuse to buy an xbox bc they are still getting CoD.

You guys should probably look into how much Sony makes off software sales, before going on these long nonsensical segments on the show speculating about Sony bringing Game Pass to its platforms. If i remember correctly, software sales were around 30% of total SONY, not PLAYSTATION, annual revenue.
There is no way they are going to cannibalize that stream of revenue, for a split between them and MS, while risking market share to MS.
Also, Sony is not going to just acquire another publisher or (set of) studio(s) simply off reaction to this acquisition by MS. This type of stuff takes weeks to months of planning and analysis before executing.
They will most likely get more aggressive with timed exclusives, and maybe acquire more support studios. They don't have the money or infrastructure to acquire a whole publisher. They can sell equity or take on debt, but ultimately it would be a very risky move.
So Microsoft will make 70% of every sale of Activision game on Playstation. It's a losing battle that will slowly devour them. It's either accept Game Pass and sell the game as well. Or lose out on the biggest money maker on your platform.
Correction, EA play on Gamepass is the full version of EA Play.

To clarify, EA's back catalog of games is on game pass already with EA play.
Just me or is Janet wrong when she says EA Play is only a 'lite' version in Game Pass and not the full version. I have it, its the full version. No time limits and you even get the 10% discount on new games
Yeah, it's the full "standard" version that costs $30 a year, includes full games after a few months to a year and includes trials of brand new games. There is a separate $100 a year subscription for EA Play Pro that gets you access to deluxe versions of new games as well - I don't know if that version is on consoles or just PC.

I have been hearing a lot about the massive loss Call Of Duty is. But, I have also been hearing about how stale COD has become. All PlayStation needs to do is make a COD competitor that does what COD hasn’t: great story telling, atmosphere, attention to detail, and not the same old crap. Then add to it by making a real quality FPS on PS VR 2. Sony should be putting their money there and then not have to worry about COD
It's just the typical console fanboy nonsense. XBox users have been saying COD is garbage for years, but now that Microsoft owns Activision, it's suddenly the "greatest game ever." I totally agree though. All Sony has to do is create a competitor, reboot SOCOM or something.

Warzone will remain on PS. Warzone made $5m per day last year. That's how XB will recoup cost. Mainstay games with stop being annual, and be Exclusive. It'll be a best of both worlds scenario for XB.

I think a lot of people are over estimating the need for CoD to be on Playstation. Sure right now it matter because of the huge gap in last gen console sales, but I would be willing to bet by 2023 CoD release + Warzone 2 we are looking at only a next gen release and last gen sales mean nothing anymore. We aren't seeing the same kinda gap we saw last gen on sales so far and with it being so early in the gen (and shortages) it's still easy enough to convince those who need to upgrade to just choose Xbox/PC if they mainly play CoD.
What is PS gonna do once Xbox starts pumping out exclusive after exclusive from all these amazing studios in a couple years? They can’t compete with Gamepass and Microsoft’s ability to buy any studio they want. Especially with CoD being exclusive in a couple years, I’m worried for PS tbh.
Pumping exclusive after exclusive agreed. Amazing? Meh. Diablo 3 was hot trash for the longest time. Overwatch has gone downhill WoW is losing its players left right and center and isn't on consoles. FFXIV is but not MS. Cod I haven't played in ages since I play Destiny 2. Just because it sells to the casuals doesn't make it quality. Also remember MS is going to make them exclusive and on gamepass. Needs to pay staff fund equipment studios to work in. Don't come crying when some of your favorite studios close doors because they may not perform to new standards. Until I actually see all these studios succeed, I'm gonna be taking this with a grain of salt. Also renting games big ouff for me. I like to own my content. If MS goes all digital rent mode in the future with cloud. Maybe it works. But people have been trying since early 2000 and no success. Sooooooooo we shall see.
@@Marc-master-of-the-reef Diablo 3 hot trash? Literally was the 10th biggest selling game of ALL TIME btw until it lost its seat to Skyrim with a re-release. It was not close to being trash, it had a bad Auction house system. Overwatch went downhill because the teams moved to OW2 and were being mistreated for YEARS. WoW "losing its players" has meant it just went down to 4 mil subs when its second below it FF14 is around 1.5mil right now.
It selling to casuals DOES mean its fucking quality, they ALL get GotY awards and are all touted as some of the highest rated games ever made.
CoD is Playstation's biggest seller, not any of their exclusives but Call of Duty and by a fucking mile. I am talking 10's of millions who buy Playstation just for CoD then might get a Sony exclusive.

They have Blizzard who famously are compared to Nintendo when it comes to polish and we just found out they were doing that under duress. Now all those fucks are gone and they will get more funding than they ever have. Blizzard will make insane games under Xbox.

So I don't see an XBox GP with PS5 versions of games, I think it's far more likely that there could be a cloud gaming app like one that could be run on a smart TV etc that has a PS version that can run on a PS5.

I was on the same page as Janet for all of this episode it seemed. Xbox puts on the friendly face while remaining very competitive. (They’re not doing anything wrong, it’s just funny how they’re perceived)
They never said they were not competitive. They are marketing play anywhere on Xbox, pc and xcloud while only paying for the game once. Very consumer friendly. Then attached with gamepass. Xbox strategy is way better than PS this generation.
I played 794 hours on PlayStation 5 in 2021.
I personally do not play any of the games under the Activision umbrella. On top of that I prefer the first party line up that Playstation already has. With this in mind, I am not at all concerned about Microsoft's purchases. If anything I see it as a waste of money.

MW2019 was arguably the best COD since MW2 / BLOPS. Warzone was a cultural phenomenon. The word "gulag" was used everywhere in pop culture. Cold War and Vanguard struggled a bit because they were caught between generations, and were developed during quarantine via WFH, so they were weaker entries than MW2019. However, they are still solid games, and Vanguard is actually a lot better than Cold War.
But, the overall discussion around COD is still as big as it ever was, and this is mainly due to Warzone. There's so many influencers and popular streamers that have moved from Siege, Apex Legends, Valorant, Battlefield, Halo to Warzone Caldera late last year and have actually stayed there (unlike Halo Infinite which was more of a fad in the competitive shooter space) due to the introduction of the new map and new anti-cheat.
There's been a big push by gaming media lately to delegitimize COD by complaining about the annual releases being too much, or too much of the same, but its all bullshit when you see how popular this franchise still is. There's no one else in the shooter space doing as much as them, as consistently as them.
MW2019 sold well due to warzone being a huge success and free to play, the modern warfare name, and the pandemic happening shortly after its release, but as someone who is quite in tune with the cod community, most people absolutely hated that game on its release. It was catered entirely to new players in its game design (extremely loud footsteps with no perk to decrease volume, doors everywhere, skill based matchmaking, etc)
@@dickdanson your whole argument goes out the window when you realize Warzone launched months after MW2019 released.
A lot of people did criticize the slower, more tactical, and campy gameplay style of MW2019, but that sentiment changed quickly once they added more maps. When Cold War released, people said they wanted more MW2019. Same thing when Vanguard released.
MW2019 is still very active today despite the recent issues.

@@dickdanson I'm aware of all this. But like I said, the multiplayer suite for MW2019 is still very active and populated to this date. And likewise with Cold War and Vanguard.
I'm not disagreeing with you, Warzone definitely was a huge driver in sales. But it's still COD at the end of the day and theyre still one of the best AAA shooters on the market.

The only way Sony competes directly with Xbox is they need a partnership or be bought by Google. Google has the money to buy buy studios and they have infrustruture. Playstation has the console and IPs that Google needs to be successful in gaming.
Can any of you playstation fans tell me if its possible to easily go between two consoles with the saves transfering like an xbox makes so seamless
gotta pay for it and transfer everything in the cloud before you sell your ps4. other option is to buy a usb stick to make a physical backup to keep the data for yourself before you sell the ps4. gotta do one of those 2 things tho. no free option exists.

I think playstation should carry on the way they are doing it, they have made smart acquisitions in 2021 with partners they know and trust. However if Cod is removed from Playstation, they should see what fps they could get from different studios/publishers as exclusives/ timed exclusives e.g. the next Battlefront if that is in development.
