"The story is kinda a mess because it's not Kojima"
A wild statement.
Kojima’s world is so ludicrous that it’s basically a trap for anyone else trying to make a game using it.
I'd rather have Sony and Microsoft make these acquisitions than Tencent
Console wars are over. The content wars have commenced.
Janet has been such a great add to this podcast. I was worried adding a third chair would throw off the rhythm Greg and Ble$$ had developed but Janet brings so much more to this podcast. I can’t imagine it without her
Agreed
I remember when Sony was trying to buy Digital Extremes, makers of Warframe, but they lost bidding to Tencent. Sony has been wanting a multiplatform live service game developers, so Bungie is more a response to failing with Digital Extremes
How effin desperate You need to be, to buy Bungie and Destiny, so Your platform had a game as a service dev and title? Dev, that already said „Bye” to two publishers and a title with many problems, huge FOMO and history of pissing off gamers.
@@Mr_Paw_revised Why are you so heated Sony made this acquistion for bungies and knowledge with GAAS while also being able to leverage Destiny for television and movies. I do agree that somwhere down the line Bungie is going to buy out of their contract because theyre weird like that
@@thegoat2985 It was in a light tone, I should add this -> 😆 I’m not mad, I wish them well, but I see this as a weird move. With little work from both sides, some good will and limiting own ego it can be of great benefit to both sides. But there is so many hurdles along the way…
@@Mr_Paw_revised they left MS cause they wanted to make new IP and MS just wanted Halo. The buyout price was pretty cheap as well. Activision was just a publishing agreement and Activision are toxic as hell
@@voidler Yeah, I know, those were probably the reasons. Still, they didn’t hesitate to do it. Even if current deal with Sony can make such move impossible, they can be difficult to work with. That’s why Sony is trying to keep all workers by offering them bonus if they stay at the company. $1.3B just for bonuses, that’s a lot of money.
If You look at this, Sony and Microsoft bought two companies with a lot of baggage. It will take some time to make it work.
I am in the same boat Janet is in. I had a party with someone, that person left the party, and I realised I was in a party now on my own. So when I need screenshots somewhere else, I just use that party and download onto my phone.
I am not a car guy ... and I saw the GT7 state of play and man, I ended up pre-ordering it! 😆
Does anyone know the link for the fantasy critic league? I really want to see the scores
This was a great ass episode lmao, yalls chemistry kills me.
I think Bless's predicted top story for 2022 would be NFT's is going to go out the window: 2022 looks to be acquisitions as the top story.
With that said I really hope the industry doesn't devolve into an escalation of acquisitions from Xbox and Playstation. I don't see that being healthy for anyone in the industry.
The only acquisitions I want at this point are for dormant IP, like Sony buying Konami to make MGS/Castlevania. It's why I'm okay with MS buying Activision bc Crash, Spyro, Tony Hawk have a way better chance for more content now that those studios shouldn't be forced to work on CoD.
Another interesting thing is Bungie's multiplayer is no longer in competition with the other games within playstation studios. If they succeed others within their portfolio succeed because playstation studios is now succeeding as a whole as well as that being the case with other companies. What I can see is them creating a multi-party effort involving all of the studios. Bringing back playstation home actually as a hub to access all of these games and interact with people socially I think would be awesome but that's just me. Having your avatar go and jump through a portal that starts up the destiny game for instance would be really cool.
Also I think sparatacus is tied to their patent, they had issued patent 17/107329 that allows for high-speed save data storage which was probably the biggest blocker for them for a while now
Every gaming company wants a massively popular live service game like Fortnite. MS is trying with halo and just bought warzone for this. It’s constant revenue and can grow if done right. Destiny for a newer IP did pretty well as GAAS. I’m sure PlayStation will try to push this more and use the expertise to work on the other multiplayer games they have in the works: deviation studios / firewalk studios. A top GAAS game is a very important revenue stream all these companies are looking for. They won’t make this IP exclusive because how else do you get Fortnite numbers. At the same time you can make it the best place to play on PlayStation with full dlc included in ps plus / Spartacus to keep those subs up.
Microsoft has Minecraft already.
And their other live service games are really successful aswell, obviously not Fortnite numbers, but there is a huge variety that fill certain niches.
Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, The Elder Scrolls Online, even Age of Empires and Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Grounded also has a lot of potential if they commit to it.
Redfall and Forza Motorsport also look to be live service games coming this year.
This isn't even including the Activision-Blizzard things like World of Warcraft, CoD Warzone, Starcraft, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch.
Sony is smart buying Bungie, live service games are something they are seriously lacking, they have none at the moment.
@@nicktubby9710 I wouldn’t say forza is a live service game, well not in the way that I’m thinking of (f2p with dlc). But you’re right about halo, Minecraft, sea of thieves, Minecraft being the most successful. Warzone and overwatch, are very successful, not sure where wow is these days. But either way you’re right, every company needs some popular live service game as a revenue stream. Will any of these including destiny/bungee IP reach Fortnite levels, time will tell but that’s what these companies are striving for.
it’s interesting to do a GT specific State of Play. I feel like the people who will buy it already know they will, and not much will sell new people on it
i think after GT sport had no campaign, people wanna double check that they’re gonna nail it this time.
Funnily enough I preordered after seeing the state of play. It was enough to make me want to play it - been on the fence since the announcement.
@@angelocampagna3355 oh interesting! that’s good to know, maybe I should give the SoP a watch
This one is gonna be massive.... a lot of people are coming back to GT now that it has a full campaign. People are thirsty for that.
PSILY is infinitely better with 3 chairs. Keep up the great work!
thank god I wasn’t alone when I was searching for captures in the app. I also felt like I was losing my mind
It Takes Two Movie who doesn't want to see that Elephant scene in live action.
barrett's waaa made me cackle
When do you guys think the deal will go through buy? Season after witch queen to have “PlayStation” on the loading screen
I'm really looking forward to GT7. Admittedly I am the person with a wheel, pedals, and shifter. I think they may be focusing on the game because Sony knows HFW will sell well so I think they want to push GT7 instead. Plus it looks incredible with near photo realistic visuals so it shows off the PS5 well.
Great episode guys🔥what a great time to be a gamer 🙌
I'm not a fan of Destiny so I am thinking exactly Janet. I am very excited to see what comes from Bungie in the future.
I have huge hopes for Destiny bc we all know Sony at least makes great single player stories
every interview they’ve done on Witch Queen makes it seem like Bungie wants to build better campaigns, so I am really excited for Witch Queen and beyond
This was a great PSILY
Greg “I prefer not to say” Miller. MY GUY
Gran Turismo 7 (or any other sim racing titles) targets specific people, it's ok if you are not into motorsport. It's my most anticipated game of the year though.
They are kind of overlooking the fact that it's not really that 'niche' - GT averages about 10m sales per main entry over the series. It's in line with Uncharted in terms of popularity
I enjoyed the Tiny Tina Assault on Dragon Keep, but I'm pretty sure it was part of the Borderlands 2 Handsome Collection. That game was also a PS Plus title.
Yeah, this is my issue with it; the DLC part was already given away on PS Plus as part of a larger package, so for those who downloaded B2HC (which would likely have been a lot of subscribers) already have this.
Just for the screenshot part, I initially just my stuff to one of those hey how you doing are you lonely bots. I eventually just made an alternate free account just to send screenshots
What if Spartacus isn’t a game pass killer but then teaming up with the Spartan and adding game pass to the top tier of PS+?
I worked with a lady who worked for a podiatrist with last name Foot lol.
I like how consolidation isn't a referenced issue now? Besides Barret
Janet, playoffs?! Playoffs?! You kidding me? Playoffs?!
Exciting times ahead
That was me bless I made the gang up on each other comment 🤣...it's true tho
I think these purchases keep each other in check. Maybe Sony thinks twice about timed exclusivity with Destiny with the risk being losing cod or warzone. This applies for Microsoft also. They think twice about timed exclusivity of cod at the risk of losing Destiny. It will be interesting to see if Sony relents on the timed exclusivity. One thing I see is this purchase solidified the inevitable that Sony will eventually do date & day in Spartacus because the live service games will fund the other studios.
"Gran Turismo is a niche within a niche"
Gran Turismo is the best selling PlayStation franchise of all time
That's based on longevity. Saying GT is the best selling PS franchise of all time says nothing about it's popularity in the present.
@@radiospines - Depends a lot. For non gamers, I bet GT is way more popular than Uncharted, Ghost and so on.
@@nolifebrGran Turismo 6 sold about 5M. Sport sold about 9M.
Sony's 3 highest selling games:
TLOU 24M
Spiderman 20M
UC4 16M
The last GT game to pass 10M was GT5 ... which was in 2010
@@nolifebr It's in line with Uncharted - GT high point is similar to Uncharted, on average it's done better. PS4 wasn't a great generation for GT though.
Bungie currently have 900 employees and are now going to expand. Crazy!
Sony is going to take their assets of gunplay and multiplayet mechanics to start a exclusive fps game for sony to beat cod. It'll likely be military fast pace and maybe even Sci fi. Like cod with an alien invasion or zombie like enemy. But making it realistic like last of us. That's what I'd do anyway
@@steve87j cod have aliens? or you mean they going to make game like resistance but bigger as cod and bettelfield?
@@rinkumultani6515 like cod realism but with aliens. Resistance was ww2 I think. I imagine a realistic modern shooter with a Sci fi element would be able to wipe cod off the map.
They actually have 1.15k according the o LinkedIn
I message an old friend who's no longer active to download my screenshots
Janet seems far less worried about consolidation than she was last week...for some reason...can't imagine what that reason is.
Funny that...
Because... it's one studio and not a huge publisher?
The scale of this and the terms of the purchase are a huge factor. If Microsoft came out tomorrow and said all future Bethesda games would be everywhere, and activision would sit outside the Microsoft Studios hierarchy as their own independent entity in the organization (with a new board so kotick is out), then the consolidation WOULD be less of a concern. It would still be a concern though, because both those PUBLISHERS are huge. Bungie is a single game and single revenue stream.
I literally said this was an example of me being right to worry that third party is in danger. But after a year of Janet isn’t a real PlayStation fan I’ll take the Stan accusations just as a change of pace.
The new Sony Online Entertainment
The fact that you debated wether bungie is the best studio🙃
Let’s gooooooooooo!
There was a leaked document floating around - a while ago - about what's going to be coming to PSNow, it had Horizon Forbidden West on it (for this year). I don't think I've heard Playstation come out and say whether they are going to start putting new released titles on the streaming service. So, how likely are we going to play the Horizon sequeal close to its release, if not same date?
I share direct to Twitter, save the screenshot on my phone then delete the tweet lmao
I do this sometimes too lol
They will be able to take and learn a lot about online services and multiplayer games from bungee
I use an old account to party with just to send images on app
I hope that future acquisitions can be as open about staying multiplatform. I don't see this stopping until the other independent publishers and devs are bought up. Better Sony or Microsoft aquire them than Amazon, Google or god forbid, Meta.
Ghost of tsushima legends did release standalone though....
At 8:08, did Greg say "this is 'penis,' I love you"?
can they really not say they are playing Sifu?
We need a Resistance so bad
Going by how they got a best in class shooter / GAAS developer in Bungie being in the North America region
( Sony Just bought discord )
Going by the same mindset
Japanese region Best in class fighting game developer in Arc System Works ( Sony just bought EVO )
European region best in class RPG developer in CDPR ( Sony needs more RPGs to go with Horizon Bloodborne Returnal )
Sony Stated they will be growing Bungie ( hiring spree ) so they can develop and publish more of there games under the SIE umbrella ( making Bungie a publisher )
Arc System Works and CDPR both fit this mold dev teams who publish there own games who can benefit from Sony growing them into there own publishers under the SIE umbrella
I can also see Kojima Productions following this role under Sony Interactive Entertainment
While capcom square konami are already publishers which is something Microsoft would do in acquisitions
They say multiplat but do they really just mean dual platform? Pc and PlayStation.
The language is clear on this from the Bungie press release and the Jim Ryan interview. Bungie can go wherever they want. No weasel words like “desire”,etc.
Sony never does two or more state of play specific game streams. Horizon alrdy got one last year for 20 plus minutes. everyone gets one usually before they release the game shortly after.
yes I think they are going be, at least top 2
Not a fan of Bungie remaining independent and multiplatform, and Sony going so heavily on GaaS. Also Jim saying they're moving to being multiplatform, what the fuck.
This gives you more choices not fewer, you just need to take off the zero sum "console wars" hat. It'll be alright. Horizon and God of War aren't diminished because they're also on the PC. They're still wonderful games.
Hey gang!
That destiny pun was on purpose.
If your vantage point with these acquisitions is “how will this hurt Microsoft…how will this hurt Sony” and you are purely a stan then you aren’t a gamer. Just go mess with stocks. I think these moves while massive are probably in the long run great for gamers. The worry of outliers gobbling up the competition instead of the big 3 is concerning and I think Sony and Microsoft know that.
I was confused why Bungie went away from vehicle combat, some of the best chaos in Halo comes from vehicles, hope they get back on track.
There is vehicle combat in Destiny 2
If only they coulda helped the Avengers team
I think Playstation strategy could be like:
- Continue to make blockbuster games with playstation studios, putting them on PC with Spartacus later on (not day and date);
- Start making deals with third party more often for content on Spartacus, and Jim already said, they are going to make more acquisitions as well;
- expand known IP's to different types of games (probably multiplayer) like you guys said to grow subscribers (and that's what this deal with Bungie is all about), and to different types of media, like HBO's TLOU, Uncharted movie etc.
I agree with Janet when she said that Spartacus is probably going to not exactly change the "Playstation way", but will expand how they do business.
Xbox was seriously lacking inteernal developers, but it's not Sony Vs Microsoft, It's companies with game history versus Google, Apple, and Amazon. Who have more money than both to dump into gaming. Google and Amazon are trying and they are failing shafting gamers. Sony and Microsoft are going to end up working together to lock things down.
Ultimately that's where I see it going. I can see Microsoft pulling out of console hardware but having a deal to put Game Pass on PlayStations.
Everyone needs to really get in line with this thinking. We won’t have our precious tribalism (I’m joking btw) if Jeff buys everything up. These were probably good moves for gamers.
@@gumgumleobazooka Microsoft has been pushing for years to open up gaming for everyone, Sony has been reluctant since it's riding high.
This will give Sony the FPS, multiplayer division it needs to diversify its successful narrative driven 3rd person games. Infact you really hope Sony doesn’t mean into the God if War/TLOU too much. As someone who hasn’t been able to hop in next gen man…really feels like I need to hold of until 2023 at least to see how the landscape is changing. I went Xbox last time and regretted it, after getting a PS4 was thinking Sony all the way until I finally gotten Gamepass last year. VR2 being affordable and the next step might be an icebreaker especially with more Sony acquisitions coming
OMG what is this energy and why is it what the world needs right now!?
At 8:06 he definitely calls it penis I love you.
I’m not a Destiny fan at all and I game mainly on my Xbox. However, because I’m a fan of gaming and not a toxic fanboy of any one company, I’m really happy that this is obviously a positive move for Bungie and Sony/PS and I hope one day I can enjoy any new content/games they produce. The best thing is that, even if I don’t, I wish them all the best because competition drives innovation (provided it’s kept in check and done correctly).
They should keep most of the single player stuff fully exclusive.....especially the core PS Studios. However if they buy... From or Capcom or Square...those could be on PS and PC, with maybe a small delay for PC.
Hardware is the heart of PlayStation and if the console dies or shrinks, then PlayStation will never reach its potential.
Multiplayer / GAAS stuff can be day and date with PC. Don't mind that.
Nice
Hear me out.... Chris Pratt would be perfect casting for Cody.
Redacted is elden ring right?
I am anticipating a story driven shooter from Bungie under the PlayStation banner.
That would be interesting. I'm anticipating just more Destiny lol
@@codyrostronart I don't think PS would buy bungie just for Destiny. I do think we'll be seeing some interesting games... hopefully
@@fragr33f74 they mentioned a new IP but I think this has more to do with online infrastructure than any individual game.
Destiny is going to have a movie or show? The game that didn't have time to explain why it doesn't have time to explain?
If we're talking multiplayer games from the first party, I'd love a title in the Horizon-verse with the framework of a Monster Hunter game.
so we not getting hyped for horizon in three week
The real question now is when does Kinda Funny acquire Janet Garcia to act as an independent partner?
The absolute difference in this title and the KF titles about xbox + activision is hilarious.
Tough to compare anything to Activision/Blizzard. Bungie is just one studio. Activision/Blizzard is a majority of the gaming world. One is certainly more seismic than the other.
My only worry with seemingly everything PlayStation studio hiring for big triple AAA multiplayer experiences, how would be they all be able to survive and succeed? Especially with being exclusive?
A note to ask: do you think it’s weird how no one has ‘criticised’ Xbox now for making their games exclusives, yet Sony has kept bungie multi-platform? The media always led to believe Sony were the bad guys
That's what happens when you have ridiculous amounts of money. Not only can buy 3rd party publishers like they're going out of style, you can hire the best pr machines to spin whatever narrative you want with things like..."Microsoft isn't inching their way towards a monopoly. They are helping the employees, who were working for an evil company and preventing the other big bad companies (because we're one of the good ones, don't you know..) from buying up all of these 3rs party studios. We're not doing this solely for our monetary interest, regardless of where this takes the industry, it's for the players".......
Bungie was so good at creating a Games as a Service game (Destiny, Destiny 2), that PlayStation bought them to help teach the rest of their studios how to do it. The future of PlayStation is now these live streaming games, probably all available through Project Spartacus.
Highly unlikely - yes GAAS will become more prevalent on the platform but Sony is the master of the 3rd person action/adventure and that is the foundation Sony is built upon.
@@oOTheSilenceOo Absolutely they are, but there's no reason why there can't be an overlap of the two. Insomniac, Sucker Punch, and Naughty Dog all have multiplayer type games in the works. PlayStation is evolving. Single player won't go away, but they are certainly working towards a different future.
Ignore the genre of the games Bungie could bring to sony, its ALL about multiplayer and their netcode foundations which are top class. Going all out on single player one-and-done titles hamstrung sony's ability to compete in the evolving world of current games and ongoing income generation. Bungie is a way they can turn that side of the business around, plus get some much needed first party FPS cred back.
That’s not happening at all
Single Player games aren’t going anywhere
GaaS/MP games will become a thing going forward
But there’s a huge player base that doesn’t care for it
Janet been blaming her family for not finishing Sackboy for over a year. When's the last time she asked them to play? I played through with 3 and sometimes 4 people. Not that difficult. C'mon now.
Wasn’t ready to be called out like this but you’re right. It has been a while since I asked lol
GT7 is going to be great. Best racing series.
Honestly Janet has been such a great addition to the pod! The pre-TOS banter was top.
Exclusive content in Destiny won't go down well. If it's just Xbox it won't matter because they would be use to it after all the timed exclusive content in D1 but it's also PC now as well and every content maker for Destiny is PC. Personally don't think it well go down well.
I can't lie, apart from the OG Halo series (Where a lot of that team has left) and Destiny (Which is one of my most played games of all time so I can confidently say is a VERY mixed bag quality wise) I am not too confident in Bungies future with PS. Destiny 2 set the series back with its launch imo setting the series back even though it has made large strides since then. The not exclusive Part is MASSIVE, seems like more of a partnership deal i.e PS and COD in the past (I know its not the same) but what does this really do for the PS brand except add some more revenue for future Destiny sales and future IP, I dunno.
One of the key people from those Halo days is now running 343 (and seems to have bad blood with the Bungie that remains) and he just so happens to be their narrative person, so that is a bit of a roadblock in the way of them doing something really narrative focused.
What have they made in the last 20 years that wasn't Halo or Destiny? BTW the not exclusive part isn't a partnership, they are owned by Sony. It's Sony telling fans & Microsoft that's how they want Microsoft to do things with Blizzard, Activision & Bethesda.
@@Redswipe my point exactly
How you describe Bungie is literally how you can describe Activision
Same could be said about all of Activision Blizzard.
I know Greg’s take on a destiny show is an opinion, but he has no idea about how much Lore is in the game, kind of upsetting how there wasn’t more research done about destiny’s Lore before this conversation took place. The media applications for Destiny are honestly endless, I know he doesn’t play the game, but it’s a bit disappointing. Not trying to start shit, I love Greg, have for years, but maybe Paris should of been invited for this one.
We’re going beyond consoles- Jim Ryan. Welcome to pc day and date for all games.
It’s definitely how you compete in the space. The PC market is massive and growing largely every year.
Mabey in a good couple of years
That would be amazing. Even less of a time window would be great to see.
I’m planting my flag on this hill HFW will be on pc 6 months after ps5 release and then you’ll see it day and date for god of war

Not a Sony player but this acquisition as an Xbox player had me smiling at first reaction. I feel like Sony has games coming I want to play. No offense, I don't like all that story driven narrative stuff. I like game mechanics.
Bungie becoming owned by Sony, one would hope that Destiny 3 launches with more satisfying content then the first 2 games launched with.
Destiny 3 isnt a thing. Destiny 2 has a 10 year roadmap and they have a new IP in the works that wants to cross over into movies and television.
It will now guaranteed

Wonder what the Redacted game blessing is playing 🤔
Same! Came to the comments to see if anyone had guesses as to what it could be lol
Elden Ring perhaps
@@kdiamond12 ooo you might be right
Doesn't Sifu drop next week? That would be my guess.
I haven't played Destiny and I know it's huge, but I didn't even think about Sony making all of Destiny's expansions available on Spartacus or included on each console. That would be a huge get and probably a great way to get people to flock to spartacus. Keep it available everywhere, but make it free on PS.
I'm surprised that Bungie staying independent wasn't touched on that much. That's unprecedented not only for Sony, but for company acquisitions in general!
Its because they are playing to fan boys.
@@dstephengantt6096 Understood on that, happens with any "branded" podcast unfortunately. But I don't even see how it'd be relevant to not talk about even when playing to fanboys
@@imadetheuniverse4fun yet they clearly didn't do it for a reason and Sped through that part of the article they read. Greg opened the show with a single question. " is bungie the best playstation studio?" Dispite both playstation and bungie saying that bungie is still independent.
I would love to see Bungie remake the Killzone franchise with Guerilla Game's help/supervision.
Bungie would slot in well below naughty dog, insomniac, santa monica, and sucker punch. If this aquisition was a decade ago we could discuss them being #1
Bungie has VERY favourable terms in their contact, if the reports are correct. Guaranteed multiplatform for future IPs and the option to self-publish? No PS studio has those terms.
Bungie is confirmed to not be a part of Sony WWS and remain an independent subsidiary, though.
I think its a bit unfair to other great Sony properties like Naughty Dog that they can't also do multiplatform games.
Not really lol sony needs exclusives and I'm pretty sure naughty dog is happy working and focusing on one system
@@slmm__6959 I agree. PlayStation Studios games need to stay exclusive. Those games are built with PlayStations in mind, with the haptics and 3D audio
@@keithnmoore2 exactly why Nintendo is selling like crazy cause you can't play those anywhere else, sony needs to go back to the ps4 strategy
Spartacus on Xbox/PC and Gamepass on PS. It's kinda making more sense now. Both companies can hit number goals a lot sooner by spreading across all platforms.
The New Destiny 2 Dlc just passed 1 Million Pre Orders. pretty sure destiny is making bank for bungie.
destiny only has roughly 1-3mil active users. 30 million was kinda funny.. haha pun.
Playstation needs to take the worlds that they make and expand them. Instead of just having their 3rd person story driven games come out once every 5 years, why don’t they have multiplayer games that are in those universes but are different.
Like why doesn’t Guerrila take the mechanics and the open world of Horizon and make a big open world multiplayer game like GTA Online and allow you to buy different outfits, machines, weapons, property etc that expand over time with updates like they do in GTA. They can also radically change those world like Fortnite over time by adding a ”story” to those worlds.
I agree with you
But GG just started horizon series tbh I do expect that from them especially after this bungie acquisition
I could be wrong but I think Guerrilla originally wanted Horizon to have a multiplayer experience. It already has Monster Hunter elements to it so make that into a multiplayer game and it’ll be great
You make it sound like it's a good and simple thing.
It's not.
3:23 kinda interrupted Janet rudely to make an obnoxiously loud statement. Let the woman talk.
