Is it just me or does Greg seem extra angry about this game? Maybe I'm just not remembering this accurately but I don't remember him being as pissed about Avengers which in many ways seems similar in terms of too many not fully developed ideas.
My take as a father of three: He has a newborn, which means that he’s probably not getting enough uninterrupted sleep. It can be easy to get very annoyed by little things during that period.

He consistently said it’s a 7 while the meta says it’s an 8. Not too far off point, just didn’t enjoy it as much as others.
His wife used to work at the studio i think...maybe something personal...left on bad terms.

My thought as well. When he was talking about how this is repetitive and doesn’t do anything well I just kept reminding myself how much he loves Avengers, the epitome of repetitive and not doing anything well, to the point where it was essentially forced to become an FTP game with micro transactions.
By him liking Marvel so much makes his opinion more valid I think

Yeah I don't understand this. Avengers has you grind the same repetitive battles over and over for lame, unfufilling rewards too so it compounds the repetition.
There's less depth in the Avengers combat than there is in GotG. Greg seems to only like live service or multiplayer games these days... Avengers, Predator, etc. Some really eccentric takes.

I still remember the time he said that he didn't like the character of Arthur Morgan from RDR 2 because he was "mean", yet he didn't have a problem playing as Trevor in GTA 5, who is literally a cannibal and a rapist...

I just beat the game after listening to this review. And I’m not here to bag on Greg, but I genuinely don’t understand where he was coming from. I loved this game.
I just beat the game too and I'm the exact opposite. I'm almost 100% with Greg. I do not know where the rest is coming from. E.g. flying the Milano feels sluggish and slow. When he's talking about going around Knowhere and all the NPCs don't really say anything of important, making Knowhere feel like a dead city. Or when he refers to the part after you beat Raker and you're just walking down the walkway and everyone stops to have a dialog while you and your team are doing such bad animated waves. I don't know how you can disagree with those points at least.
I think headspace is definitely a factor when reviewing something and I think Greg being a very very new father definitely impacted his views on this game. Way way too hard on this game when he wouldn’t usually be
Hey Barrett, you've been doing a great job ever since you took over directing Gamescast, especially with the B-roll. One small thing, though, is I wish there was a way we could still see the cast during it, like when we cut away from Mike's reaction to Greg's take on this game (as hilarious as that was) at the beginning. I don't know if there's an easy solution, but perhaps something to consider for the future if you happen to see this. Keep bossin' that baby!

Props to Mike for being the only member of the crew to actually define what a Guardians of the Galaxy experience should be (group misfits come together as found family). I kept thinking if no one was familiar with GOTG before this, nothing on this review was going to tell them when everyone kept saying "it's exactly what I was hoping for from a GOTG game."

Couldn't disagree with Greg more. Loved this game and I wasn't excited for it at all initially. Great game and pumped for sequels.
I understand some of the comparisons these guys are making but DO NOT go into this game expecting Last of us, mass effect, uncharted. I’m always against comparing games to other canes because I think it detracts from a game trying to be its own thing.
I guess comparison is only a bad thing if it makes your hyped up game sound bad. Comparison is necessary in any market, if only to give context and make an informed purchase. I bet I could sell you on literally any game if I never compared it to anything and showed that all those fancy features are actually worse in every way to other games.

EDIT: I beat the game and I have absolutely no idea what Greg is talking about lol. This game is such an incredibly good time. The writing is great and they absolutely NAIL the dynamic between the Guardians. This game has genuine laughs and tons of heart. It definitely has its issues (it’s pretty choppy and buggy), but I think it’s pretty great overall. And that soundtrack is something else. These crazy bastards got actual musicians to form a fake ‘Star Lord’ band to emulate 80s rock and gave us genuine bangers. This game is fire and I hope it does well so we get another one.

I’m so glad Guardians is getting pretty good reviews. I never got Avengers based off everything I saw and all of the reviews steering me away from it, so this makes me pumped. I want good single player campaigns from all my superheroes. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

I wish they would let Mike get a word in. Just sort of steer/manage the conversation by giving everyone a chance and not just talking over each other. Other than that, great discussion. I'm surprised how different Greg is from everyone. I think I'll give it a try but I have similar tastes to him so I'm a bit nervous

you guys are being a little too hard on the game. Jedi fallen order was not a ground breaking game and yet because it was a single player game and was made by ea it got great reviews. It was a good game and to me so is this. This game has so many great things. It looks stunning, has great story, banter is great and has great music and for marvel fans this game has a lot of small details so I think they should get credit for that and also not for making this a online multiplayer game.
I had to comeback after finally getting through this game and say wow am I shocked with Greg's take on this game. To me the story, dialog choices, voice acting, and art direction of the game are all on point here. This game is on the same level as the Insomniac Spiderman games when it comes to those elements. The combat is a bit simple, but it's still enjoyable mostly because its spread out and paced well. I'd only dock points for the combat honestly, but playing the actual game not once did I think about how I wished they looked more like the MCU characters nor was I bored. This is easily a solid 8 game. I'm not sure what game Greg played to have loved Avengers but not like this.
I'm truly shocked how much Greg didn't like this. I too am a fan of avengers. But fully admit that I wish It was like GOTG. This game is fantastic! One of my favourite games of the year.

I don't know what it's going to take for people to realize yes Greg is part of a PlayStation podcast.... But his views on games are not that great. Just saying I don't really agree with a lot of his opinions.

I felt the game took inspiration from the comics more then the films especially when it comes to starlords back story, Drax killing thanos and the many eater eggs straight from the comics
So Blessing's biggest complaint is essentially he makes bad decisions in game. Fair enough I suppose.
Those kind of decisions shouldn't fell that there are "bad decisions" tho

I have watched many playthrough s of this game by now. And I am STILL discovering new dialogue in response to choices made by different players. Even just one little line I missed is like woah! He didn't say that to me, etc.
Loving it so far (luckily have had it for the past few days), and currently on Chapter 9. Banter between the Guardians is great. Love the fact that its just a solid single player campaign, which feels like a mixture of Mass Effect (due to the choices you make that can impact the story being told) and Spider-man. Combat is simple but really fun. The SOUNDTRACK IS SOOOOO GOOD!! Definitely gonna be a sleeper hit for this year!
I'm very close to finishing the game and it's fantastic. How are the reviews so mixed i don't understand. Also any complains that enemies are supposedly bulletsponges only means abilities are not being used correctly. Im tearing through encounters with the various combos.

I've beaten Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and overall its a great game. The story, characters and gameplay are all fun and good and way way better than Marvel's Avengers. Downside for me was that its poorly optimized on Xbox One I ran into a lot of bugs.
Just treat gregs opinions like your grandpa playing video games and your be fine.
So to summarize... "it became the fact of like yah ok cool but then ohhh I get it right? and not what I wanted but it's like fine and I'm like ok right and yeah." Great review.
I'm curious to hear what the gang has to say. I've been playing the game for over a week now, and I fould the game being a solid 8/10. The absolute best part about it is certainly the voice acting and just hearing the dynamic between team. It's fun just to chat and see what happens. Also folks, check the bathroom from time to time. You might get some surprises 😁

Greg needs to play the game correctly, seems to me he is nitpicking every single aspect of the game. He does not pay attention and is quite cynical.

This game is amazing.
In my opinion this game is to Guardians of the Galaxy what Spider-Man PS4 is to Spider-Man. The game is just pure fun and I haven't laughed out loud in a video game like this since The Stick of Truth.
Greg didn't like this but loves the Avengers. Questionable.
I took a long break from Avengers after beating the first campaign on PS4, but finally went through it again on PS5 recently and it was definitely more fun the second time around. Still not worth full price, but I do like swinging that hammer around. 😂
I just finished moments ago and I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. It certainly had some small issues but the good far outweighed the bad. It was an interesting story and the gameplay was fun. The writing was outstanding. I was worried that it would feel like an MCU rip off and it wasn't, this stands as it's own GOTG. I actually like this Star Lord better than Chris Pratt's lol. I think this is better than Avengers, not as good as Spider-Man

Either you haven't played the same game as the rest of us, or witnessing the splendid miracle of birth and becoming a father instantly made you extremely JADED about gaming for some reason...
I think I’ve known this for a while but just further confirmation that I fundamentally don’t agree with Greg about games and seems like most of the industry is in the same boat going by review scores.
A few weeks ago he was pumping up Farcry 6. That is the most paint by numbers, expected Ubisoft and Farcry game. It does nothing unique, special or really that good. Characters and world are bland and what you’d expect. Gameplay and check list style loop is the same it’s been for over a decade. It’s sitting in mid 70’s on open critic and Metacritic, Greg acts like it’s a GOTY nominee or something.
Guardians of the Galaxy, is it perfect? No! But damn if it doesn’t try hard and was clearly made with passion and love. Writing is great, characters are awesome, soundtrack is fantastic, combat is fun but repetitive. Right now sitting at an 81 on Metacritic and seems to be one of the year’s biggest surprises. Greg acts like it’s mediocre trash (talks about it, how everyone else talks about Avengers). Isn’t even going to finish the platinum. He’s played total garbage for a lot longer to get the platinum before.
I just couldn’t disagree more with his opinions on most games. And I feel like he really tried to dominate the discussion here, when clearly he’s the minority in this discussion. Also feels like he was the main catalyst for the clickbait title on their other video calling this game “divisive”, which it clearly isn’t. It’s fine to not like a game but that shit’s trash and stupid and makes me trust the channel less. Stop doing clickbait titles.

I know every reviewer has their own things they want like and enjoy. I'm not sure that wanting games to be movies is one of those things that will appeal to me.

I think this Guardians is to Greg what Deathloop is to me right now... no clue how people like it so much... Cole and Julianna have charming banter but the weapon selection is very generic and there is literally one enemy type in the game so far (have not finished the game ... i feel im close tho and hope the ending makes me like it more.)
I thought this game was amazing it’s banter was actually funny which I never seem to find in games and ther heartfelt/emotional moments actually hit for me and pretty hard in place (there were watery eye moments) I can’t wait to see what they do next and hope this turns into a series

I respect everyone's opinion on this, but i highly recommend bumping the difficulty. It will fix all of your "no strategy needed in combat" complaints.

I played avengers for the first time and then Guardians of the Galaxy. Wow did that make that game so much better to me, the quality of story, the performance of the actors and the gameplay made for a so much better and fun game. Excited to see a sequel
Feel like Greg is being way too harsh on this game.. I thought the combat was a blast and I cared way more about the story than I ever imagined.. it’s definitely not perfect and is janky sometimes but I absolutely loved the game

This does seem like a similar one to Jedi Fallen Order. Some loved it and I thought it was a very 7 type of game. I felt like that one was a mix of Uncharted, Dark Souls, and a Metroidvania. It's funny because Greg keeps citing the 70% thing here and loved Jedi Fallen Order, but I felt like that was very much a 70% everywhere type of game. I guess it depends on your familiarity with the games it pulls from. I'm a fan of From Software games, so the weaker implementations of their stuff in that game felt rough. Greg isn't so that would be an issue for him as much. Maybe it is similar here depending on your familiarity with Uncharted/Mass Effect/Spider Man.
That's honestly how I feel about this situation also! I understand it might not be incredible, but in the way Jedi Fallen Order was a hit that came out of nowhere even though it wasn't perfect, I see a similar situation here!

I think the crux of part of the problem with getting reviews before the games out is because these guys I’m guessing arnt playing the day 1 patch. Greg’s talking about how many bugs he’s had and I’m nearly through the game and have had 0 but I have the newest patch. It’s still possible 2 people with the same patch can have different bug experiences but I don’t think that’s the case here.
Yeah, I mean before he started talking about bugs, Blessing mentioned that it was probably because he was playing before the patch.
I thought that was a very good conversation about this game and from what I've seen so far, I can see this from both sides for sure. I personally didn't expect much from this when I saw the Square Enix E3 presenation. But now I'm gonna play it because this definitely looks like my type of game.

I just got this game yesterday with the holding sale.on ps store and I'm 3 to 4 hours in and I love this game . Combat is a 7 outta 10 for me but other than that I'm lovin it McDonald's style. Greg your opinions are valid sir but overall to nit picky for me I'm with snow bike on this 100% great story great banter great visuals this game is fuckin eye candy. I have never played mass effect or star wars, I can see the naughty dog in it but as a AAA experience it's got me sucked in. Go get this game.

I finally got around to playing this game and it is a solid 8 (combat is a bit repetitive and there are a few bugs), as pretty much everyone else pointed out, it's really weird hearing Greg's take on this.

I get what Greg means but I also feel much better about it. It's a 7/10 game but the best 7 I've ever played. Outside of it's story and character interactions there's very little it does well, it's a game built on a foundation of mechanics that are good enough but it's remarkably great at distracting you from that. I adore this game, but it's definitely flawed, however the flaws rarely get in the way of enjoying it.
