Jenna Ortega is killing this role. For the record, she did most of her stunts, she learned to play on cello, learned the fencing and fighting too, and some other things you'll see later. She choreographed a whole scene in episode 4.
When they were filming Jenna didn’t blink in one of the scenes and Tim loved it so he told her to keep doing that. Throughout the show, she doesn’t blink most of the time, like maybe 96% of the time. The only time she blinks is when she’s caught off guard or uncomfortable

I did NOT expect to love this show as much as I do. Like a lot of 90’s kids the first exposure to the Addams Family was from the old cartoon on Cartoon Network. I loved it because it celebrated the weird, the creepy, and the spooky. And as a loner kid I gravitated toward that, especially to Wednesday. She was an adorable little goth badass who lived life her own way. And Jenna Ortega PERFECTLY portrays her. Also this episode has my favorite cover of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones since Westworld.
Tim Burton directed the first 4 episodes of the series. Makes me wish he had directed the live action Addams Family movies, but I'm glad with what we have.

I started watching on a whim and I couldn’t stop after the first episode and binge watched the entire show in one day. Jenna Ortega kills it along with all the other actors and it was a pleasant surprise to see Gwendolyn Christie. I think you’ll love it!

So they didn't set a hard goal of no blinking, but Jenna was asked to blink as little as possible for effect. That's why most of the shots have her not blinking. But some do, especially when Wednesday is off guard or uncomfortable.
The fencing scene started really good, but in the first blood round they started using techniques for much heavier blades and stopped using fencing moves. Notice they were doing big swings from the shoulder? Those are telegraphed moves and are able to be blocked or parried easily. Fencing is done either with the entire body to get the range for a thrust, or from the wrist and elbow, because you can recover your guard much quicker than swinging from the shoulder.
The original Addams Family TV show aired in 1964. It was a B/W sitcom that ran for two seasons. You didn't show it in this video, but when she and Tyler are talking at the harvest festival and he says she's kind of kooky, then she replies that she prefers "spooky", that's from the theme song to the show. There are also a series of shorts on RUclips called Adult Wednesday Addams, but they were unauthorized so the woman who made them was forced to stop.
Someone took what Jenna said out of context and suckers believe she never blinks, lol. She blinks, especially if the character is nervous. She made a point of not blinking a lot but everyone blinks, even Wednesday Addams.
On re-watch Jenna Ortega does blink in this episode, but there is a purpose to it. She blinks when she is surprised by the therapist mentioning her novels. Wednesday is caught off guard and is genuinely uncomfortable, so she blinks... about three times... it's either that or it was one of the few times there wasn't a good take without her blinking, but still considering Ortega's incredibly subtle acting throughout the show, I am inclined to believe it was a deliberate choice on her part.
If you want to be MOST impressed by Jenna Ortega- who is a phenomenal young actress- watch (and react to) The Fallout. She got nominated for Best Actress Midseason HCA. A fantastic movie. She was also in YOU- a very popular Netflix Show. And she's one of the main characters in the new Scream movies.

She only cries as a child when her scorpion was murdered and when Thing got hurt. It takes a lot her show affection for her friends and family. 😂😂😂
I love the fact that you knew about the virtually almost no blinking before going in. According to things I've read, Tim Burton and Jenna worked together to really bring wednesday to life and really make her character be as wednesday as she possibly could be, in doing so, Burton taught Jenna a specific way to hold her head ( I cannot remember for the life of me what the technique is called* lol) and in holding her head a certain way and opening her eyes slightly wider than a human Normally would. Jenna said she was so focused on that that in times of rolling while she was in front of the camera, she rarely blinked. She wasn't even aware @ first that in doing that technique she was super focused and essentially forgot to blink lol but yeah I'm sure editing played a small factor as well, but yeah it's pretty cool how she discovered that later on that while the camera was on her she barely ever blinks. She's such an amazing actress, and so dedicated to her craft. I saw other ppl already have told you all the different things she learned how to do just for this ONE role It's amazing! She's really a wonder! I hope you guys love this show as much as we all have fallen in love with it. Me, personally, I binge watched all 8 eps after my 10 year old niece showed me half of ep one. Jenna’s head is tilted forward, and she then sorta look from below her eyebrows in the ‘Kubrick Stare’ and it works! And, yes, Jenna is amazing and absolutely dedicated to her craft. In all the things she does, and stuff she learns in very short times, she makes me think her IQ is crazy high..

Jenna blinks sometimes. But it is fairly rare. Also notice that after the first scene, she hardly ever moves her arms as she walks. This is reinforces the creepiness of her character.
It's funny you brought up the intro-to-cliques scene from 10 Things I Hate About You since the actor leading the new kid around in that scene was the same that played Wednesday's first bf at camp in Addams Family Values. btw- the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon/Separation was appropriate when the original study was done back in the 70s/80s, and it''s gotten smaller every time they've repeated it. As a collegiate Saber Fencer, it confuses me that the Nevermore fencing team is using Sabers for Foil, or Epee, "point (stab)" fencing. Sabers are for "slash" fencing, and they seem to be mixing the styles. I guess it's dramatic license.

Jenna’s head is tilted forward, and she then sorta look from below her eyebrows in the ‘Kubrick Stare’ and it works! And, yes, Jenna is amazing and absolutely dedicated to her craft. In all the things she does, and stuff she learns in very short times, she makes me think her IQ is crazy high..

Jenna blinks sometimes. But it is fairly rare. Also notice that after the first scene, she hardly ever moves her arms as she walks. This is reinforces the creepiness of her character.

It's funny you brought up the intro-to-cliques scene from 10 Things I Hate About You since the actor leading the new kid around in that scene was the same that played Wednesday's first bf at camp in Addams Family Values. btw- the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon/Separation was appropriate when the original study was done back in the 70s/80s, and it''s gotten smaller every time they've repeated it. I think we're down to 2.8 degrees now lol.

The dorm mother who gave her the black dalia is Christina Ricci, the actress who played Wednesday in the 90s movies. She said Christina and her never discussed the role so that Jenna could put her own spin on it.
Wednesday got one of the best rooms in the building because it was her mom's room and her mom was the best student in the school back in her day. In a way, being in the room was just another reminder to Wednesday that she was in her mother's shadow.

As a collegiate Saber Fencer, it confuses me that the Nevermore fencing team is using Sabers for Foil, or Epee, "point (stab)" fencing. Sabers are for "slash" fencing, and they seem to be mixing the styles. I guess it's dramatic license.
The ONE problem I have with this show is there is no mention of Pubert.
