Tony & Chelsea Northrup would the Lightroom and photoshop books both be for current programs downloaded (versions) I don't have the programs but if I get them and then these books would it be effective for that exact version?
How about the Sigma 24 - 105 that you recommend for the D750? Just bought a used D750 and thought the Sigma could do double duty. Have you tried the 24 -105 with the D500?
There are so many videos on youtube now trying too hard. They all seem to be all cinematic and more of a "check out my editing skills and cinematic music". This one is just straight to the facts, no long intro, no video and music interludes. Just a guy getting straight in to the details. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! 5 years later and I just now got one. At 13:00, the comments say "When it's wide open like that" but the image is a small aperture, then "When it's small like that" the aperture is wide open. I really appreciate this video. It isn't full of fluff and filler, but has very useful information on one specific camera. I also like the suggestions on the lenses as the video draws to a close.
I was spinning my head looking at that and thought I was in Alices Reastaurant ....... then it countered that idea with a concise opposite set of pictures later ..... I then felt normal again
Tony, I watched this a few months ago when I first got my D500 and keep coming back because there was so much information the first time that I didn't know what I needed and didn't need. Now I'm back to rewatch, and yep - like a good movie, you've put enough in here that I found something new to learn and use. Thanks!
Thank you Tony. This video is 6 years old and I am a TOTAL novice at 62 and my daughter has interests in Photography. I have always had a D50 since 2005 and I am diving in with my daughter with the D500 for me D7100 for her. This video sealed the deal on "who" I admire most regarding tutorials from this day forward. Yes I have seen you here and there for quite some time however this particular video is extremely important because you are able to connect with me a novice amature while delivering important information in a manner that makes me look forward to more. fact/ I do not link to other sites after watching RUclips stuff yet I am certain you have just become an exception that if you have books or tutorials out there, I will find them and purchase them because of this video you so kindly give us works for me. It is important to hold the attention keeping it fun at the same time keeping me anticipating more. I like that. great job Tony as I am only 19 minutes into this video and paused to write this. I feel like a kid now at xmas waiting to buy the D500 I have an eye on that I was certain I could NOT use ...that uncertainty has vanished.
Watched this video when I bought my D500 and learnt so much. Watched it a few time since and still learning from it even more stuff. It’s such a comprehensive guide to Nikon cameras
Cant thank you guys enough for these tutorial videos. So clear and concise. Just ordered a D500 (to replace my aging D7000) and this video is just the icing on the cake for me. Im like a ten year old on Chrimsas eve, cant wait to get my hands on it. Thank you so much!
OMG thank you so much for this video. I bought the Nikon D500 because I wanted a camera that would take good shots of my daughter doing her many activities. I was about to take it back to the store because I was so overwhelmed and couldn't figure out how to use it. This video cleared up a lot for me and I will be purchasing the books so that I can learn more.
Tony is always so calm and concise in these tutorials. I will have to watch this again as I am quite a slower learner and it is a lot to take in at once with all the menus and dials. The exposure reset will be great too. I think I will make it my thing to watch at least one a week. So helpful his wife is great too.
The reason you don't usually need the white balance corrections, is because you're typically shooting in raw, which is not color processed. White balance applies to JPG files or TIFF files where color is processed by the camera rather than later on raw import. The same applies to high ISO noise reduction... it doesn't apply to the raw files (you select it later when you import the raw images into Photoshop and/or Lightroom); that reduction applies to JPG or TIFF files.
Just brought the Nikon D500 and this video is fantastic to sit down with the camera and get to know it, not just once but multiple times, thank you Tony Northrup...
I thought watching this would be a good way to decide whether to upgrade to a d500....and have decided to do just that. This tutorial (and for my previous Nikon) is absolutely excellent. Note to self....must buy his book! Thanks Tony.
Wow! This has been the most helpful tutorial I've seen on any camera. You explained so many details about this technically complex camera patiently and clearly. It gives me confidence that I can master the D500. You are not only a wonderful photographer but also a great teacher.
Thank YOU so much for doing this tutorial! I know this video is 6 years old, but I finally for my d500 today and it is a new world compared to my d3200. So excited to get outside with it!
Hello Tony! I picked up a used Nikon D500 and used your tutorial to acclimate myself to all the new features and controls. Thank you this was so helpful.😃
I've been shooting the D500 for some time now and found this to be a good refresher tutorial. Hadn't used some of the features for some time and now found out why. Thanks!!
I just bought a D500 after having been out of photography since my Nikon 35mm film days. A pretty overwhelming camera.....until I watched this video. Absolutely fantastic tutorial! Many thanks......
I sent you guys a Tweet but I had to say something here also. I received the vertical grip you describe at 1:11:11 on Thursday and it just looks, fits and works perfectly. It would IMHO be very hard to tell that it is not a Nikon item! It is now just $68.86 and with an amazon Prime membership the 2 day shipping was free. Thanks for pointing this item out and even though I have been a long time Nikon shooter (began with the D1) I think that they have some GD nerve charging almost $400.00 bucks for this!
I just picked up the Pixel Vertax Vertical Grip for my D500 last week. A great investment. Instead of paying for a bunch of those ENEL15 batteries, I picked up a set of rechargeable AAs for under $20 and it really adds a lot of life. I do a lot of timelapses, so the need for me to be able to keep the camera running without touching it to remove and replace batteries is essential and that battery grip rocks.
First of all, thank you for your tutorial! Exposure compensation: I noticed that using the front dial without holding the +/- button as well as automatically reset +/- to zero only works in Aperture priority mode.
Despite my other comments, overall this tutorial was helpful in understanding a few things about this camera that I hadn't seen before or simply overlooked. Thank you for making the video.
Your review on this Camera which I just bought and have not set up it spot on 100% perfect. Thanks Tony . You went through each step so slow was fantastic! !!!
Great tutorial as always! Can really maximize the power and capabilities of my d500. Thank you!!! BTW, your learning books/e-books are not “cheap”. They are “inexpensive “ !!!
Tony, @ 28:57 you press the focus mode button, but, by setting "release button to turn dial" to ON you can let the button go, then adjust the settings more comfortably, BEST tip for Nikon users, especially if people have dexterity issues or arthritis, saves a lot of contortion of hands, etc.
I have to say this was so informative and look into the workings of this camera. I've had it for 2 months and learned so much in your video Kudos !!!! you guys ROCK ,
Just got a D500, so this was pretty helpful stuff. I always like Tony Northrop's stuff. However, I would like to make a comment on Custom settings banks on the camera. If you choose one of the banks, and set the "Image quality", "ISO sensitivity settings", "Active D-Lighting" and so on, and turn the camera off, those settings are retained for that bank. I photograph sport horses, at which time I turn off "Vignette control", "Auto ISO", "Auto distortion" and so on, and keep those settings in a camera bank I call Sport. Shortly after shooting a performance, I could be taking snapshots of riders with coaches, where I would be using "Vignette control" "Auto ISO" and so on, so I store those settings in a bank called Snapshots. So, I do find menu banks useful.
Thank you for this video! I just got my D500, after reading 117 pages of the 400 page manual, this was a welcome change, and so much faster to get the camera up and running!!!! Whooohooo for the auto reset on the exposure compensation!!!!!
Another great video Tony. This helped me set up my camera in a very short time, instead of going through everything for hours and trying them out. Cheers.
A very thorough review, thanks Tony and crew. I've had the camera since June, but I'm just starting to have enough free time to finally use it. Utilizing live view to get exposure compensation right is a nice trick I hadn't thought of. Thanks for that little gem.
I'll Always Love the Detroit Center of Creative Studies. "Thank you Sir" Your Vedio is very informative. Sincerely, Sundown from the Sunrise Studios. PS, I Love Heroes Hayden Panettiere. You've been an Unbelievably Breathtakingly Beautiful Professional Model since 1990!!!
Great tutorial Tony you have almost persuaded me to not switch from Canon but to also add Nikon , the only part in the video you might want to change your audio is around 12:48 you got the FStop backwards.
I know I'm late to the D500 party but I'm thinking about picking this camera up along with the Tamron 70-200 G2 tomorrow with the main focus being motorsports photography. Thanks for this indepth overview! I'm coming from a Nikon D40X.
Thank you so much for your great video. I just purchased a D500 to add to my body collection. I also have a D800. Have not seen a better, cogent explanation that is so easy to understand. Thom Hogan is great, but way too much detail. This is just what I need. Liked and subscribed. Keep 'em coming. BTW, just bought the Kindle book.
Very nice tutorial...I had this playing as I was opening the box to my D500. Great tips. First tip from me...start charging your battery, as soon as you open the box...it will take a while and no doubt you'll want to play. I appreciated the fact that this was not a here's the D500 (Little Brother) of the D5. OK, I get it...but I also saved about $4500...and the photos are still only as good as the photographer.
This information is priceless! Thank you so much for sharing. Will be buying your Lightroom classic cc video book since I’m kind of new to post processing.
Thanks for sharing, great tutorial. I still feel there's a market need for a sports f/2.8 70-200 APS-C specific lens. The recommended T200 is designed for full frame bodies.
Very good and well thought through tutorial, I have had this camera for a at least 2 years but there's still things I learnt from this, some things I didn't know I wanted but really did. Thanks! Also good tip on the lenses, have the tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and I love it! And I'm now looking at that sigma videzoom which look really nice!
Great Tutorial Tony and tonight I've just purchased a couple of your books. One comment on timelapse, you can set that in the video submenu as well and it gives you all the same settings as single shot however it creates a timelapse video for immediate playback.
Just ordered a d500 and this tutorial was excellent as always. Gives a good insight into the menu structure and I found it very informative. Also just a quick note, even though I do like your reviews Tony I would of liked to see the beautiful Chelsea in the video more. Thanks for the great videos.
Very well done and very helpful. Thanks. Obviously you did this extemporaneously, which is difficult, and even with the few 'minor' gaffs, (1 I think LOL) it's impressive how well you knew the camera and the subjects. This will be useful for all of us moving up to the D500.
I'm getting one of these in a few weeks, can't wait. Thanks for the video, but I think you had the explanation of the lens iris back to front at around the 13 min mark.
thank you tony for your easy simple way to explain how the D500 works, btw i bought your book and i love your video instructions as an added compliment to the book. you are the number 1 as a photography teacher
Very nice walkthrough of the features on the D500. I will take issue with you though when you say there really isn't anything comparable to Lightroom. I used it for years, but it cannot hold a candle to Capture One. That's not an opinion. It's just fact. Not even a close comparison. If you're looking for opinions, then we could talk Photoshop. I used it from 1.0 until the latest CC, but recently switched to Affinity Photo because it (in my opinion) has surpassed PS. I'm sure not everyone would agree with me on that, but I do think everyone who learned and used Capture One would agree it blows Lightroom totally out of the game. At any rate, I like and appreciate your videos and thank you for them.
Tony, awesome video!! I have upgraded to Nikon D5 and still learning all the functionality of this camera. Please do a tutorial on this camera and especially on AF modes. Thanks!
Thnak you For this Tutorial, I bough this Camera a month ago, and i'm using it with a Nikkor f3.5-5.6-18 to 200 and is this lens Combination is Ok but no the greatest I think I bougth your Stuning fotography guide and learning a lot from you Thank you. i will watch this tutorial several times until I really learn this camera well.
The lens you are using is a pretty non-professional lens. Why not invest some money and go for a better lens? Even certain GOOD third party lenses perform great woth the D500.
Thank you Kanak for you Input, I realise that this lens is not good as I tough, I'm planing to buy a Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Lens, what do you think of this Lens Combination Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Lens with the D500 Best Regards Julio Cesar
+Julio Cesar Roa I dont own one. But as far as i have heard from my mates, it is a Good Combination. Not able to tell you with perfection, I would reccomend you to do an online "research" on any lens before buying it... read reviews, watch videos etc. Also some websites like 'DXo Mark' are very useful in checking the quality of certain lenses
Good informative video, thank you. I use a Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + Nikon 1.4 TC 111 with my D500 for wildlife. This combination is incredibly lightweight but provides excellent results. The D500 is brilliant. It is my first Nikon and I am thoroughly impressed (I have owned 7 Canon cameras and 4 Olympus in the past). Just love the 300mm PF VR as well. This combination perfectly compliments my Olympus EM1 system.
Yes, I have read as much, but thank you for highlighting it. The problem for me is the weight - hence my choice of Olympus EM1's for my main system and the 300mm PF for my D500. I considered the Nikkor 80 - 400mm VR 11, as it is about the same weight as my Olympus 300mm f4 PRO, but I've been advised by owners of that lens not to use it with a 1.4 TC 111. I may well end up with a 200 - 500mm + 1.4 TC 111 for the extra reach I require at one of my favourite locations.
Great video. Glad I watched it. Lots to learn with and do with this camera. Also good options on accessories, tripods, lens, memory cards and extra batteries. Thanks.

Yes, they're both for the CC versions of the program which are updated regularly.
That sigma 50-100 link takes you to a cannon ef lens
Hey Tony/Chelsea, any thoughts on the new Tamron 10-24 HLD lens for wide angle? Can it compete.outperform the Nikon?
How about the Sigma 24 - 105 that you recommend for the D750? Just bought a used D750 and thought the Sigma could do double duty. Have you tried the 24 -105 with the D500?
This is amazing! Who else puts this kind of work into a FREE tutorial? A timeline of contents?? Thanks for the in depth and very useful tutorial.
my thoughts exactly. just bought an used one, really happy though and this tutorial is just amazing!!!

How do you like your D500?
Thank you Tony. This video is 6 years old and I am a TOTAL novice at 62 and my daughter has interests in Photography. I have always had a D50 since 2005 and I am diving in with my daughter with the D500 for me D7100 for her.
This video sealed the deal on "who" I admire most regarding tutorials from this day forward. THANK YOU.. I have fallen in love with my camera again... this is the best tutorial I have ever watched, easy to hear and directions are easy!
Watched this video when I bought my D500 and learnt so much. Watched it a few time since and still learning from it even more stuff. It’s such a comprehensive guide to Nikon cameras
I just bought my D500 and this tutorial is indispensable for all new D500 users. Thanks! As usual, a great instructional video.
Cant thank you guys enough for these tutorial videos. So clear and concise. Just ordered a D500 (to replace my aging D7000) and this video is just the icing on the cake for me. Im like a ten year old on Chrimsas eve, cant wait to get my hands on it. Thank you so much!
Just got d500 yesterday and was just about to look for tutorial and there you were
OMG thank you so much for this video. I bought the Nikon D500 because I wanted a camera that would take good shots of my daughter doing her many activities. I was about to take it back to the store because I was so overwhelmed and couldn't figure out how to use it. This video cleared up a lot for me and I will be purchasing the books so that I can learn more.
Thank you for sharing this. As an intermediate user, I found this exceptionally helping in setting up my D500
Brilliant and detailed. 6 years later your effort still has an impact! Thank you.
The same applies to high ISO noise reduction... it doesn't apply to the raw files (you select it later when you import the raw images into Photoshop and/or Lightroom); that reduction applies to JPG or TIFF files.
thank you
Tony, one of your best videos. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
I just got a D500 and without question this was the best video yet.
Damn tootin
Can't believe you took the time to cover ALL of this. Seriously impressed and greatfull.
This a lifesaver ... i was just known with the d5600 . D500 is another story . thanks !!!
This is the best tutorial I have found on the Nikon D500 camera.
You should never buy a non nikon accesory
Loving My new D500, a big jump from the D5100. Thanks for giving me some fantastic tips on how to use it.
I’m seriously considering getting one but what I get depends on if it will accept my F type lenses. If so I’ll be getting one
Excellent Tutorial , you just could not do it better, I cant believe how easy you have made this for me . certainly invest on your books .
Thank you😊
I just picked up the Pixel Vertax Vertical Grip for my D500 last week. A great investment. Instead of paying for a bunch of those ENEL15 batteries, I picked up a set of rechargeable AAs for under $20 and it really adds a lot of life.

D500 and Sigma 18-35 F1.8 - great combo!
You are all around the best in the photography world.
Excellent tutorial on the Nikon D500. Was the best I have seen of any tutorial I have watched.
Your review on this Camera which I just bought and have not set up it spot on 100% perfect.
Thanks Tony .
You went through each step so slow was fantastic! !!!
Buying the book just because this free tutorial so thorough and well produced.
this is absolutely great!! i just ordered my d500 (in 2021) and i’m way too excited for it!!

Glad to help!
I have to say this was so informative and look into the workings of this camera. I've had it for 2 months and learned so much in your video Kudos !!!! you guys ROCK ,
Its been a year but thank you soo much for the free tutorial. Appreciate a lot.
One of the best D500 overview I've seen so far, great job ! And thank you !
Thanks, glad to help!
@59:32 “i really don’t need any more buttons, so...” 😅😅😅 too funny!! i love this video!! watching it again before my d500 arrives tonight.
How do you like your D500?
Thank you.
Thanks, I live in Holland but you voice is so clear that I understand everything. Going to buy the d500 so your tutorial helps a lot. Thanks.
Just got a D500, so this was pretty helpful stuff. I always like Tony Northrop's stuff. However, I would like to make a comment on Custom settings banks on the camera. I see that you have started recommending Sigma 50-100, I will again request you to put up a review for all of us. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video! I just got my D500, after reading 117 pages of the 400 page manual, this was a welcome change, and so much faster to get the camera up and running!!!! Whooohooo for the auto reset on the exposure compensation!!!!!
Janice, where can I find the auto-reset for exposure compensation? I can't seem to find it. Please help! Thank you in advance! =o)
Nevermind Janice, I feel so foolish, the setting# was right there in my face for the video. =oP Found it, changed it. Thank you! =o)

Oops,
Your VIDEO is very informative for a Kindergarten Drop Out.
That's me.
Great tutorial Tony you have almost persuaded me to not switch from Canon but to also add Nikon , the only part in the video you might want to change your audio is around 12:48 you got the FStop backwards.
your a blessing this is sooo good I am on my 3ed time with this vido,I just love how you teach.

I like the Nikko 18x300 on our D500 if you are only looking for one lens.
If you want multiple lenses 35mm prime, 17x55 mm used and 18x300 mm
Thank you so much for your great video. I just purchased a D500 to add to my body collection. I also have a D800. Have not seen a better, cogent explanation that is so easy to understand. Thank You Tony for a great review and preview of the Nikon D500! I bought the D7500 but it's nowhere the quality of this D500!
Very nice and quite informative. Saves me from sifting through the manual to get the same information. I appreciate your efforts.
This information is priceless! Thank you so much for sharing. Will be buying your Lightroom classic cc video book since I’m kind of new to post processing.
Thanks, Alan, enjoy!
Thank you. Just received my D500 today and this helped me learn so much
Awesome video on the Nikon D500, I watched it 3 times so far.
This was incredibly helpful to get the basics of my new camera, thank you so much!!
just got my first mirror cam and its the d500
thank you soo much for this video
An in depth and absolutely fantastic tutorial. Very well explained.
Very well done and very helpful. Thanks. Obviously you did this extemporaneously, which is difficult, and even with the few 'minor' gaffs, (1 I think LOL) it's impressive how well you knew the camera and the subjects. This will be useful for all of us moving up to the D500.
Thank you for this video! It successfully transitioned me into a book purchase. =o)
This was very helpful
I'm getting one of these in a few weeks, can't wait. Thanks for the video, but I think you had the explanation of the lens iris back to front at around the 13 min mark.
Glad it was helpful. Enjoy the new camera!
I have been so intimidated by my new camera. Great video!! I'm ordering the books too!
thank you tony for your easy simple way to explain how the D500 works, btw i bought your book and i love your video instructions as an added compliment to the book. you are the number 1 as a photography teacher
Excellent explanation great source and easy to understand thank you to pushing forward the class of photography hobby
so pleased you did this video it has given me a much better understanding of this fantastic camera.
Thanks for the video, great info! You forgot to mention the two ports on the front left of the camera though
You've done a VERY professional job here! Well done! Hugs from Brazil.
EXCELLENT video/tutorial. Thank you for posting this for all to see and learn from. Certainly do appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks for this very informative video. Simply one of the best I have seen!!!
Tony, awesome video!! I have upgraded to Nikon D5 and still learning all the functionality of this camera. Please do a tutorial on this camera and especially on AF modes. Thanks!
Informative, I love Nikon D500.
Incredible. Would pay for this information. Thank you for your time and enthusiasm.
Thanks very much for this great video. Extremely useful for such a complex camera.
Thnak you For this Tutorial,
I bough this Camera a month ago, and i'm using it with a Nikkor f3.5-5.6-18 to 200 and is this lens Combination is Ok but no the greatest I think I bougth your Stuning fotography guide and learning a lot from you Thank you. i will watch this tutorial several times until I really learn this camera well.
The lens you are using is a pretty non-professional lens. Why not invest some money and go for a better lens? Even certain GOOD third party lenses perform great woth the D500.
Thank you Kanak for you Input, I realise that this lens is not good as I tough, I'm planing to buy a Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Lens, what do you think of this Lens Combination Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Lens with the D500
Best Regards
Julio Cesar
The D500 along with the Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 is also a great combination for wildlife
+pete draper ✌👍
Great video. Glad I watched it. Lots to learn with and do with this camera. Also good options on accessories, tripods, lens, memory cards and extra batteries. Thanks.
Excellent. AND for free?? Much appreciated!
