Life is especially fragile when you become complacent in the Ocean. Swimming at a drop off so a 2.5 k breach can happen in rough water where people are fishing. Screams "Sharkey water". He was is the right place at the right time. No mistaken identity. Shark saw a slow moving human and decided for salad (human) instead of Cheesecake (seals). I got that analogy from another person on one of these threads. Canceling the charity event in wake of his death would go against all Simon stood for. He would have been heartbroken to know they set up Drum Lines and killed two tiger sharks in the process (of course that's all we were told was collateral damage). Rest in peace Simon Nellist. You were a son, a fiancee and a great advocate for marine life. Sorry to see it end so suddenly and brutally. But when we go into their habitat we are at their will.
@@lydiaparker1778 salad or cheesecake? I've never been a huge cheesecake fan. Salads are good as long as there's steak or chicken in it, otherwise I'm hungry a half hour later... Nothing about that water looks inviting to me. I did scuba dive in Hawaii with a group of others and remember reading the paper the day before and seeing an article about a guy who'd had his shoulder ripped off by a tiger shark. "Great" I thought... But this is Australia and there's not only great whites, but box jellies and another tiny but deadly type of jellyfish the size of your thumbnail out there- (irukandji)... I often read from commeters providing stats like- "you have a 1 in 3.5 million chance of being killed by a shark", but... 3.5 million people aren't swimming where Simon swam. I guarantee that if 3.5 million were to swim in that same water, there'd be more than just one fatality.
@@nebula1924 looking at that water and all I see are videos of great whites breaching at the foam seal cutouts. No thank you. Deep water, Rocky. Nope nope nope hell no. This clip, and the one of the 23 year old in Egypt who’s eaten on video are two of the harder shark attack videos anyone could ever watch.. RIP to both people 😞
The one in Egypt is the most graphic, horrifying shark attack I've ever seen. You see every single unedited thing that happened to that poor man. To hear him screaming for his father, is heartbreaking..
It's crazy how they're probably the most extreme shark attacks on video we have, and both happened this year months apart from each other... same with the kid who jumped off the ship in the bahamas where people think they saw a shark.. either way there were sharks in those waters that ate him prob minutes, if not seconds after the video.. Crazy how all the shark death videos are starting to come up.. everyone having a cellphone, and ready to film is showing whats been happening for centuries. Shark "experts" want to act like they don't eat us whole, they indeed do... "they only take a bite cause they're curious/confused". Yeah, ok. I'm staying out of the sea. Thanks anyway.
This might be the first recording of a shark actually eating a human that resulted in a death. Scary enough to be eaten by a shark. But to have it recorded takes it up a level of horrifying.
@@Modus888-if9yj right, it's like I always say; once we enter the Waters Oceans Lakes or Sea's we are no longer top of the food chain, we become part of it
To say sharks don't like the taste of humans is the same as saying humans don't like the taste of chicken. Some do, some don't. You can't group them all together. Also there have been too many people eaten by sharks to even suggest they don't like the taste.
I’m pretty sure that that very misconception is from a lack of understanding of how nature works. I love seeing GWS but no way in hell would I ever go into the ocean and swim with them.
especially people that are dumb enough to swim in a GWS hunting ground, EXACTLY where the sharks are hunting or too arrogant to know they are swimming straight through a kill zone..Ive ceen underwater photgraphy and a topographic map of the bottom here. not many many better sites in Australia to find hunting white sharks
I don’t understand how you could possibly think it would be safe to swim in an area like that. Especially if people are fishing and releasing the smell of bait in the water.
Also, they are probably throwing back anything they catch that is too small (in open sea). Not an area that I would be swimming in. But the guy was British, and doing this sort of thing would be a lot safer in England.
There are open water swimming races each season through the same area. He was practicing for that event. That was the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963.
@@theredflannelchannel7820Does that mean everytime there's a thunderstorm you should stay inside ? Because your more likely to be killed by a lightning strike. Than a shark attack.
I frequent that beach/ bay and swim around where the attack happened. Sadly this guy was at the wrong place at the wrong time, plenty of grey nurse sharks. a few weeks before this attack, I witnessed a young boy and his father lose their lives about 20 meters away from the shark attack spot

An Apex predator out to eat you is not. Also, the primal fear of being eaten alive far outweighs the fear of crashing your car. They are not even remotely the same thing.

There was a 12 foot Tiger shark that was reported roaming the area. Still haunts me that I could've been its meal that day.

All of you “insensitive” mfs can shut up. That’s the ocean not our land. When you drive a car the agreement is stay in your lane and you won’t get hit. There is no agreement between man and shark
In Australia it's rare to see anyone going further than 20m deep at the beach, it's like Australian basic instinct to know the dangers lurking in the ocean. You can look down the beach on a 40c degree day and see thousands of people only waist deep in the water. There is the odd person here or there that swims up and down the coast 50m out, but I always think they're testing fate. We also have a shark Patrol in summer. Light planes and helicopters funded by the South Australian government will patrol up and down metropolitan Adelaide and the Fluerio peninsula for sharks too close to the beach. Not unusual to see the chopper herding a shark back into the depths of the ocean.
Northern gulf coast of Florida. We never go in more than waist deep. Since 1970, I’ve only see two sharks come close enough to shore to where they would be a threat to people, and both (one was a hammer head, about 5 feet long) swam away when they saw humans. If I want to do actual swimming, I’ll do it in a pool.
@@nottoday.9503 Hammerheads aren't scary, even the beastly Great Hammerheads that come through the Keys aren't a danger to people. If anything, they're so laser-focused in on scanning for real prey they don't want to bother with exploratory bites on people swimming around. Waistdeep water is still easily deep enough to get a shark bite. I've actually known 2 people that got bit at New Smyrna, both while standing on sandbars in water up to their thighs. 1 guy was playing with his 6 year old son at the time, the Spinner Shark took a quick chomp right above the back of his knee just after he put his kid up on his shoulders, it let go almost immediately though & only left a partial bite mark. The other guy got a quick grab at his calf with what was believed to also be a Spinner, he lost a piece of his calf muscle though, about the size of a dime. Funny thing is the dad who got a partial bite said it hurt immediately & when he looked back & could see the shark at the surface of the water, his gut reaction was to simply get pissed & he remembers saying "what's your problem" out loud. The guy who got a tiny piece taken out of his calf didn't feel any immediate sharp pain, he said it was more like a really horrible Charley Horse while you're sleeping, which then turned into feeling like his leg got electrocuted, but it didn't fully hurt until the next day.
So much for the mistaken for a seal argument. These shark-hugging "scientists" telling people what an apex predator can and cant, should and shouldn't do, like theyre supposed to discriminate humans because we have feelings and families to go home to. Ive heard a lot of people ride attacks like this one off to mistaken identity but thats complete BS to me. When a Shark is hungry and your out there all on your own moving slower then a injured seal theyre gonna take full advantage of what they prercieve as a easy meal. After the initial attack the shark had to have known he tasted nothing like seals or any other oceanic animals they predate on normally and yet it still came back to finish em off. Now maybe some are legit mistaken identity incidents but not as many as we are made to believe. This mistaken identity BS in a way gives off a false sense of security. Its like saying "the Shark didnt mean to kill you, It thought you were a seal ect." When In reality the majority of attacks are opportunistic predation or territorial. And knowing that should affect your behavior when in the Ocean. Knowing that if you give them the opportunity they can and will attack/eat you opposed to appearing less "seal-like".

RI P buddy, condolences to your family and friends. Swimming so far from shore in AUSTRALIA is compared to going for a jog in the African Savannah with lions, hyenas.....HORRIBLE IDEA.
I know this guy has lived here for a long time and knew the coast that he swam in but do you think because he didn’t grow up here he didn’t understand the dangers of swimming in these areas. From a very young age we are taught not to swim in open waters with rock formations surrounding the shore. You might swim it 100 times and be fine but it only takes 1 time to be in the wrong place and it’s not going to end well.
In 1978, at age 5, the first movie I saw on videodisc was JAWS. I lived off of Lake Michigan, in Muskegon, and was terrified to go into the water after that. My dad would laugh and say something about the lake not being saltwater, which didn’t ease my 5-year-old fears, not one bit. My mother lives in Myrtle Beach, and I catch all kinds of hell because I still won’t set so much as a toe in the water. People always rattle off some unpersuasive statistic - probably the same stats this poor guy rattled off to people like me - to which I reply “You know what my odds of getting eaten by a shark are if I DON’T go into the water? NADA, zero, ZILCH. I like those odds.” As Bill Burr said, swimming in the ocean is like running naked, barefoot and blindfold through the jungle. I’ll take my chances on good ol’ fashion soil and pavement, thank you very much.
Someone has already said it, but in my opinion this video does destroy the ‘mistaken identity’ narrative that has been widely accepted surrounding shark attacks. I think it’s a matter of size, a smaller shark won’t attack a human because an adult human is larger than they’re willing to risk, but once a shark reaches a certain size, we become fair game. Shark scientists say sharks will bite a human then release because they don’t like the taste, well this video disproves that. The shark attacked, then cam back to fully gobble the person up. Sharks hunt by detecting electrical pulses emitted by a preys heartbeat, meaning anything with a heart is a target, including us. Also, while this might be the first ever video of a full human consumption by a shark, there are records of it happening before.
That means he can't swim back to shore with no arms and no legs... he can only wait until the shark comes back to finish him off . Did he raise his head up just before the shark came back ?
Those who say sharks are not attracted to human blood The shark took a a bite first and again came back for more I don’t think shark will skip an easy meal if it was hungry

God DAMN son, this is way more difficult to watch than I assumed it would be. As an avid shark enthusiast for my entire life (at 33 yrs old), this is far and away the most brutal, shark-relates video I've ever seen. As some others have commented, this may very well be the first and only video of a shark ACTUALLY consuming someone. Not just the initial attack, and then we know from reports that the victim was later partially or fully consumed, but the actual predation is IN the video. Fuck me this is horrifying. It was on another video where I saw the comment that led me here, and that comment said the white was a 17-footer. Now (and this is just my opinion), that shark doesn't look to me to be 17ft long. Judging from the dorsal and the tail, even though the shark is clearly turning when we see the fins, it still doesn't look THAT monstrous. But hell, if there's a report and it verifies that length, then wow. This will probably remain one of the rarest videos ever to be taken. Not just an attack, but a great white. Not just a white, but a massive one. Not just an attack, but someone being fully consumed. It just... there's no words. This is nightmarish.
Not to mention if someone is fishing and he reels in a fish… marine predators that react to those ripples in the water. A fish struggling for example. Many fisherman get their catch eaten for that reason. We fished the oceans clean. We can all eat tuna each and every one of us can go out right now and buy tuna. Yet orkas are attacking sailboats because they can’t find tuna and tuna is endangered. You think they don’t see industrial fishing boats scooping up all the fish? They can’t attack steel boats so they attack sailboats as a act of rebellion. Now mind you I don’t think this shark is out to get humans like orcas they are not that intelligent … but a big hungry shark will easily eat any of us … if it’s for survival and I suspect with their source of food being taken we might start seeing this more and more.. as for this case.. as horrible as it is.. I think the biggest mistake he made was swimming where the fisherman was.. that fisherman is a good fisherman if he’s fishing in the same spot as a MASSIVE GREAT WHITE! I would say if he concluded the fishing is good here and so did the shark… I conclude that man is probably an excellent fisherman …

From what we can observe in this video the white shark came from deep water and hit Simon on his left side, disembowelling him, (you can see the bleeding and his entrails if you freeze the video).

It’s because we can all buy tuna right now…. And they can’t …

I’m here watching and nothings going to change that. That being said I think I’m not capable of filming or even thinking about pulling my phone out and recording. Who does that? No compassion no laws no empathy no mercy. That “oh my God” was from the terror he saw in that moment..
