Just to clarify, this video is to theorize WHY the company felt the need to send an entire colony to lv426. The events of alien take place in 2122, the events of Romulus take place in 2142 and sometimes in 2150, Hadley's hope is established. Which shows the company got desperate, after the events of Romulus and presumably losing all test subjects during the events of the film. They then decide to establish an entire colony so they have HUNDREDS of specimens to work from.
To be honest I think its a mildly illogical gap filling ret-con, given that in Ripleys debrief the execs were unaware, Burke was sent (along with marines) to find out and opportunistically get a specimen and that nothing was really stopping WY from making a totally secret site (a bit like the USM Auriga in Alien Res.) with no Colonial Marines sniffing about.

The only real evidence we have WY knew was Mother and Special Order 937- to me this suggests WY did not want colonial entanglement and oversight- which then makes Burkes motivation to try the same for a sample in Aliens logical (he even says so). It was only after Ripley gave her testimony and HH transmissions ceased Burke and the Marines got involved- why make a colony a Petri dish you knew would draw attention from the people (Colonial Admin) you don't want to have there? Just make a black site, disappear people and be free to do what you like.
Given that Weyland-Yutani is portrayed as a huge corporation it could just be that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.
Sure but you dont operate completely independent. LV426 would have been flagged in their system to stay way. Nobody would need to a give a reason.
This is absolutely common in large corporations and gov agencies doing RND. You split people up into different cogs and only let individual people know what they need to know to do their job.
I was just thinking that myself. Hell, NASA and the US military in general has managed to loose some of the technical data of some of their old rocket and military technology in the past and has had to spend a lot of money to basically re-engineering part of it. If that's just one government on one planet I could see it being an even bigger problem across an interstellar mega corporation.
I think the whole mythos and horror of the weyland youtani corporation is that they ALWAYS knew about the xenomorph creature through out its existence as a corporation
It could be part of power struggle within the company, if it has a board of directors who all want a larger share of the company, then they could all be working against each other in order to succeed. I mean Weyland-Yutani is described as a mega-corporation with a large grip on human society - sort of like how the CCP governs China.
If you've ever played Alien: Isolation, which I believe Fox has actually acknowledged to be part of the actual film canon, then Weyland-Yutani already knowing about the Xenomorphs in Alien: Romulus is a no-brainer, since Romulus is supposed to be set 20 years after Alien, which would therefore place it only 5 years after Isolation's events.

I could be misremembering, but aren't Weyland Yutani executives widely keeping secrets from each other to protect their percentage? If that is the case, different parts of the company could be experimenting with xenomorphs without the others knowing.
Yeah, I thought this was established in Alien 3, but where the company got specimens is questionable.
If you look at the out-takes of Aliens there is a sequence where Newts parents are sent out to the derelict on WY orders (after Ripleys debrief IIRC).
The comic that details what happened after is pretty good, too.
Basically, they kept sending people, only for more to get facehugged and the colony was slowly overrun.

Aliens Special Edition has this in. It means that the colony and derelict are not too far as the family went in a rover. Always felt it was strange that they built the colony close (ish) to the derelict, suggesting some knowledge or some coincidence (because the plot 😂).
Not wey Yu orders, it was Burke. He sent them out there. Ripley confronts him about it in front of the others and that’s when he unleashes the facehuggers in the room she’s sleeping in with Newt. The likelihood was Burke was acting totally independent because in the beginning of the film all the other wey yu executives were laughing and mocking Ripley for reporting what happened on the Nostromo, Burke was the only one that believed her and after her story he had the coordinates of the derelict. Thats when he sent Newts family out there. Once again it doesn’t mean the whole company knew, same with the original Alien. You have to remember Wey Yu is an interstellar powerhouse at this point so there are so many moving parts they probably can’t keep track.

It's all in the novel, Alien: River of Pain, it tells the story of the colony on LV-426 leading up to the exposure to the xenomorphs on the derelict ship on Acheron. Weyland-Yutani did send those colonists to the planet knowing of the danger. It was all intentional.
Knew it.
They did know.

I wish there was a final Ripley movie where Alien 3 and Resurrection are not canon. And that Ripley after the events of Aliens alongside an older Newt and and very scarred Hicks expose and fully destroy Weyland Yutani.

Burke mentions it repeatedly about financing, setup, etc.
We never learn how they knew, but we are given every reason to believe it was known and it was the entire reason they were stationed there.
How else does Burke learn about the derelict ship to send the family to at first?

Burke finds out off Ripley....he doesn't send newts family till after Ripleys debrief, it's in the film.
Prometheus and Covenant broke continuity because the crew of the Nostromo said that the Engineer / Pilot / Space Jockey was fossilized, about a 1000yrs old I think, and that had died from a chest burster? If David created the Xenomorphs, then why was there a mural of a Xenomorph aboard the Engineers ship in one of the prequels, that ship had been there for a very long time?
Because those movies were crap and they only ruin the mystery with bad ideas.

It was never suggested David created “the” alien/xenomorph. Hell it’s evident that his protomorph was just his own version of it and not the same as what was born from the derelict from the OG movie.

Different writers over the years have messed things up a bit ...
But Aliens seems to clearly suggest that WY didn't know about the crashed derelict until Ripley was found. Then somebody in the weapons division got excited and told Burke to check out the co-ordinates by sending some colonists on a treasure hunt. The colony is wiped out, and Burke is sent with the marines to do what Ash failed at ... get a sample of some kind.
If anything I always got the impression that different divisions of WY were working against each other. The board room that Ripley spoke to might have been genuinely unaware of the derelict and aliens ... but the weapons division were secretly in the know and BADLY wanted a sample despite the risk to all of humanity.
THIS makes the most sense when it comes to why WY seemed to be so slow at times, and would spend years waiting between opportunities to hunt for Xeno's .... The company as a WHOLE weren't after these things ... it was just certain separate divisions and a select few people in power, mostly linked to weapons development. ... So yeah, with that in mind they COULD have sent the colonists to the planet ... with one hand knowing the danger, but the other hand blissfully unaware ...
I just hope this film isnt ruined with DISNEY'S "vision"

OR...Here is my theory. Perhaps Weyland-Yutani knew about Xenomorphs BUT Carter Burke being a low/mid level management type did NOT know that the company already knew Aliens existed so he sent the colonist to look for the wrecked ship Ripley reported in the hope that HE would benefit from a huge discovery. Perhaps the company knew of Xenomorphs but was totally unaware of the crashed ship on LV-426 at the time Ripley was found. The hearing where Ripley reported the events of her destroying the Nostromo was held by some governmental body NOT Weyland-Yutani. Burke was the only company employee in attendance other than Ripley so the company would not have know what occurred in that hearing until Burke reported back to the company. Burke could have altered or omitted details of the report or withheld the report from the company until after he sent colonist to the wrecked spacecraft so he could have an "exclusive" as he later stated to Ripley. There is a good chance the company may not have know about the engineer's crashed ship at all when Burke sent the colonist to investigate yet Weyland-Yutani may have still known of Xenomorphs from other previous encounters. Burke was fairly low ranking within the company so he had no idea of what he did not know. I would think that Weyland-Yutani held their cards close to the vest and did not share a secret as big as the Xenomorph with rank and file low/mid level managers. Just a thought.
Agree for the most part, though from the first film it's already revealed the company knew of the spaceship and the creature, which is why the Nostromo was sent on a detour while the crew were still asleep. That being said those on the high up will have already gotten the coordinates of the ship and they were willing to sacrifice lives, including lower ranked suits, like they did to the Nostromo crew. There's no way the people on top would forget about a dangerous creature they've been trying to get years after ALIEN; they just send more people. Everyone is expendable as evident across the movies, games and comics.
Edit: They knew of the creature and ship location due to the warning signal it was sending out, otherwise the Nostromo would not have gone out of its direct route back home.
In Alien:Isolation it is set 15 years after alien, before this and Weyland Yutanti bought the space station that the you and the alien are stuck on together on November 19th 2137, and they probably knew it was there because the Anesidora had brought a woman that was infected with a face hugger embryo on November 11th 2137. So Sevastapol had almost a month to warn the civilians on board but when you get to the station on december 11th everything has already gone to shit and it gets worse until the station decended into KG-348

That would be a truly terrifying film.
Agreed that Romulus doesn't have to break canon and that WY was probably aware of what was on LV-426 despite never hearing back from the Nostromo and later establishing a colony there. But accepting that premise, it's odd that WY would wait decades to put this plan in motion through someone like Burke. Everything was fine at Hadley's Hope until he gave the okay to the Jorden family to survey the derelict in 2179.
The logical explanation is that it ultimately wasn't Burke acting unilaterally, but may have just been a stooge who was given the green light from someone higher up. It's likely that someone more influential (a descendant of Peter Weyland?) had more knowledge about the real nature of what was on LV-426 and simply used Burke as a middle management pawn.
All that said, it's peculiar that so much time went by at Hadley's Hope without issue, until Ripley was randomly found by a salvage team. I can buy the premise of a grander conspiracy, but it still doesn't make much sense for WY to set up this nefarious plan and then wait for testimony from a warrant officer who'd been assumed dead for half a century before putting the plan into action.
Considering special order 937, i think they knew something was on there otherwise why have the order at all? I’m pretty sure the head of the bio-weapons division and/or Weyland made sure to keep any alien encounters under wraps. And I think they wanted the colony to expand in numbers before starting the experiment. And it was Jordan that discovered the ship on the planet since the Anesidora crew shut down the beacon
Another interesting but obscure detail is that David actually contacts Weyland Yutani in the promotional material around Alien Covenant with an "olive branch". This could mean that Weyland knew all the way since Covenant about the Alien. Now whether David did actually have an offer for them or just wanted more test subjects (The Nostromo Crew) sent his way will have to be determined in a later movie if Ridley Scott wants to finish between covenant and Alien 1.
Hadley's Hope was an experiment. But with Ripley being found and nothing happening on the planet. They gave Hadley's Hope a kick in the direction on the space ship.
In covenant, David sends back info to WY telling them everything that was done. He also would have given them the idea to keep an ear out for any other signes of the engineers. That is the whole basis for the nostromo being told to check it out. Since the nostromo blew up, WY never got the news about lv-426 until ripley showed back up. As for why the colony was sent there, it is rich in superconducting ore and other metals/minerals.
Now to explain the promethius black goo used in Romulus, again, David sent back the info about what happened during the promethius part of the mission so WY would know about the goo, what it does and where it was. David may not have passed info about what happenned when he finally got to the new planet he planned to go to or what he did to the colonists. There, it all works now
I've always thought that it's obvious that whoever issued the order in the first film, covered things up when the Nostromo didn't come back as scheduled. So that explains why know one seems to know about. And it seems that building a colony is very expensive and so choosing where to put one takes a long time. Perhaps Burke got curious hearing Ripley's story dug into whatever archives he could and found out it was true and decide to resurrect whatever plans there were. Ripley does say later in Aliens she checked the logs and found out it was Burke that gave the orders and told them where to find the crashed ship. If they pay attention and do things right, they'll be able to avoid any conflicts of the story and timeline and make something really good.
Someone pointed out on RUclips comments somewhere, can't remember just this minute, an interesting fact: The woman who referred to LV-426 as a 'rock' with "No indigenous life" originating on it, that she was 'not' a 'Company Exec', she was, it obviously appears now, an 'expert' on the 'Interstellar Trade Commission' Board of Inquiry. A 'Fed', in other words. Hence why Weyland-Yutani had the slimy, self-absorbed 'Burke' present at the Board of Inquiry hearing, so they would have 'One of thier own' there with Ripley. Thought everyone who missed that fact, like myself, might find it interesting, and see things in the ALIEN-cannon from a new perspective. It would appear, at least to me, that once Burke heard Ripley's testimony to the I.T.C., that it was shortly afterward that 'he' sent the colonists to investigate the 'Grid Coordinates' that Ripley and the Narccissus' Flight Recorder surely gave the I.T.C. during the Inquiry proceedings. Of course, Burke's sleazy underhandedness is verified 'twice' in the 'Special Edition' of 1986s "ALIENS," once towards the beginning, when the Hadley's Hope 'Supervisor' answers Lydecker's question, given to him by Newt's parents after they find the derelict, and later when Ripley confronts Burke about 'dooming' the 157 colonists of Hadley's Hope. And do me a favor, save your popcorn and eat it, rather than throwing it at me if this observation I've posted seems 'too elementary' for all you "In The Know"-types, ok? 😂😂😂
My headcanon-ish idea is that the Weyland-Yutani bioweapons division knew that the Xenomorphs were on LV426 somewhere, they just didn't know where exactly since searching a planet-sized moon for something as small as a ship would be excessively difficult, especially keeping it covert to hide their activities from competitors and any governmental oversight. (This is assuming that the transmission that drew the Nostromo in either shut down due to wear and tear and power exhaustion or, as I prefer got shut down by the crew of the Anesidora as per Alien Isolation)
So there's the events of Alien Isolation and now Alien Romulus which presumably leaves WeyYu without specimens, so a guy in the BioWeps division gets an idea. They want a specimen, they know it's on LV426 somewhere, so they put down LV426 as a potential candidate for terraforming in the Colonization division. That way the colonist could poke around and hopefully find the Derelict.
I don't they specifically sent the colonist in to die, the colonist likely didn't factor much except as a means to locate the Derelict. They'd not lose any sleep if a few, or even the entire colony got infected since that just meant more specimens. They likely believed that the colonist would call in on discovering the derelict, WeyYu would send in some Synth Dogcatchers to acquire specimens and sanitize the site then leave the colony in place maybe minus a couple potential infected personnel who would be taken by WeyYu for "the best medical care possible."(translation Observe until they chestburst)
Then while waiting for the colonization to work it's way through the bureaucracy to be approved and the colony expedition to be outfitted, either the people involved with this little project had some tragic losses(accidents, heart attacks, etc.) or they fell afoul of office politics and got purged and the whole true reason that LV426 was colonized was forgotten
Enter Ripley, the only survivor of the Nostromo, and Burke(who always struck me as a low to midrank manager whp was chomping at the bit to get the big score and advance to higher position) Ripley gives her report about the whole situation, Burke, after Ripley's meeting does some digging, maybe calls in some favors, find out about the Companys interest in the Xenomorph, and seeing the opportunity to make it big, he sends the directive to investigate the area where the Nostromo found the derelict. Then that of course leads to Aliens and so on, and so on.
As for the Aliens from Alien Romulus, maybe they were specimens recovered from the wreckage of Sevastopol station, which they (possibly) lose after Alien Romulus

Yes, but Ash / Weyland-Yutani didn't know anything specific, and in "Aliens" they don't know anything as well.
Only Burke takes a chance, wanting to capitalize on finding something big.
That's why he sends someone to the location of the derelict ship, the family of Newt.
This new movie, going by the Trailer, looks good, but the story, right know, doesn't quite add up, I think.
This is the problem with prequels - you end up retconning and trying to explain stuff that didn't really need an explanation
I don't think Ash was put on the Nostromo to investigate xenomorphs. It's possible Wayland Yutani places androids on all deep space missions (as Bishop states in Aliens). To my mind, he was just on the ship and had the signal not been detected, he'd have just completed the mission as normal - but when the Nostromo detected the signal, a hidden programmed agenda was activated (a bit like Robocop's "directive 4" or Star War's "Order 66").

If prometheus is taken in consideration then I don't care for this story. The only thing I want is a proper Aliens 3 with Ripley, Hicks and Newt, if they don't give me this, I don't care at all.
We nearly got that film we all wanted. The three actors where excited for it, at least Sigourney weaver was. RIDLEY SCOTT cock blocked it. So unless they made a movie with alternative actors for the characters we will never get what the fans have wanted for decades.
All of this makes sense however it does mean that the colonial Marines wasn't sent to Hadley's Hope to rescue anyone but probably just to protect Burke while he snags a specimen.
I never assumed that Wayland-Yutani knew of the alien on LV-426. I always made more sense to me that When on a routine run the ship detected the signal from the planet which triggered the standard protocols already programed into all their ships.
All their ships and androids, to me anyway, have special order 937 pre installed just in case the ship stumbles across something valuable.
Additionally, with Burk. I also never assumed that he knew of the Xenomorph at all. He guessed and made his "bad call" based on Riplys testimony and thinking he could snatch up something valuable that his bosses had ignored.

IMO, based only off non-prequels, I'd agree that it's more conceivable they didn't know specifically of the alien until Ripley gets back to Earth. However the last minute insertion of Ash seems to show they knew SOMETHING, perhaps just the signal in the general vicinity and Ash was just to make sure the ship investigated and brought back whatever was there. It suggests the other officer who went with Dallas on previous missions was human and couldn't be trusted.
The colony being there for as long as it was just doesn't seem like the company knew what was there, otherwise they'd probably have highly trained people for the job and not just grunts.
in the original novelisation the distress signal from the space jockey was picked up by Weyland yutani by there deep space satellites, and send back to earth via series of deep space relays... Ridley Scott cut that part out as he wanted more suspense in the film, and therefore highlighting the bad luck of the nautllus just passing through that system

Alien - River of Pain Audiobook explains this better than Romulus ever will. Not enough people give the voice actors enough credit for thier performances.

First off, love the Alien talk Mr H 100% onboard with lore talks. Love it.
I think Weyland Yutani always knew about the Xenomorph going back as far as Prometheus, if Alien Isolation is cannon. "Spoiler Alert" Weyland Yutani bought the Sevastapol space station from Seegson as soon as they got wind of the Nostromo flight recorder being recovered. The orders were then to keep the creatue secured until they could recover it. As a bigger picture I think Weyland Yutani just tries to isolate locations in which the creature has been discovered and tries to recover them. Burke was an idiot, but the board room were all dismissive to Ripleys story because of the red tape its easier to paint some one as crazy when all the evidence has been covered up. I gaurentee if the Facehugger remains or a sample of the Big Chap was onboard the shuttle, she would have been killed.
I don't know how the events of Prometheus and Alien Covenant connect to the Alien because it was never finished, but I think Weyland Yutani knew about those events too, they were trying to find the Derelict on LV426 ultimately they didn't know where it was. Like you said the Nostromo never made it back to report its findings.
Just as a note, Its written into these deep space crew's contracts that a warning or beacon/distress call must be investigated to quote Ash. They never gave up looking for the Xenomorph they just didnt know where it was or how to find it.
So Prometheus will be interesting, because of the TV series being set before aliens and presumably after Prometheus or before it, where aliens are on earth. Interesting to figure out the timelines from there

Because it's like, a team of colonizers that work for a section of Weyland-Yutani establish a colony on a planet that just so HAPPENS to be the same planet the crew of the Nostromo found the Derelict and one company representative sends a communique to them to send a scout to check it out.

Both franchises have a decent movie or two after the first two greats. Obviously they just aren't as good as the first, but T3 isn't terrible and neither is alien 3 or resurrection
I would love to see a Alien movie from the perspective of Weyland Yutani making decisions and discussing what they know about the xenomorph, maybe a scene where Ash is briefed and sent out and swapped with the previous science officer on the Nostramo mission.
I think Weyland knew and sent the colonists out to be taken over by the xenomorphs, then they have a planet full of them to study. The people Ripley briefed may not have known but the higher ups did. I cant wait for Romulus, I think it will give us some nice story and link to the other films nicely. From what I know about the plot I already have changed my thoughts on Prometheus and Covenant.
How xenomorph became civilized by letting their technology intact? Thats the experiment they conduct.
They should ignore all the other films except the first two. The franchise has been so reckless with continuity.

*David, inherited the Company with Weylands death* They knew because David sent that Message which should have taken six months max to reach Earth. David ordered the Crew of the Covenant for experimentation and went rogue, which is why they sent a Walter Unit not a spare body.
Vickers did say she did not want to sit around for years arguing over who ruled the company. And the Dream Machine from Prometheus, meant they picked up Ripley far Earlier than we know .... They saw it. Also They would have sent a retireval ship to follow the Nostromo and most other ships. They always knew
What "dream machine"? I don't remember any kind of "visions" of the future in Prometheus. Guess I'll have to rewatch it soon
@@jr2904 the machine David used in Prometheus at the beginning where he monitored Shaws Dream. It means WY LLC, had access to Ripley's memories in stasis and they did have a craft near to collect the escape pod not 50 years later

This is exactly what I've been hoping this film will tackle, to an extent: The incidents of PROMETHEUS, ALIEN: Covenant, ALIEN (esp. Ripley's messages to the company and her Daughter), ALIEN: Isolation (dramatizing what happened to Amanda Ripley, when she tried to discover the whereabouts of her Mother...encountering the creature); and the lead-up to what will occur in ALIENS, 35 years later.
Weyland is like Umbrella 100% even Peter Weyland was inspired by Ozwell E Spencer with wanting eternal life from a bioweapon, they put the test subjects on the Shake And Bake colony, all the suits prob like some of the scientists or security who Umbrella employ didn't know, or care what Weyland were really planning , theres parallels with what Umbrella did to Racoon City and Weyland Yutani did to LV246.

@BaphometTheGoat It was and Capcom got ideas from Alien and probably heard about concepts not used like the Black Goo being a payload etc but Prometheus was after Resident Evil 5 and Spencer in that game specifically mirrors Weyland so I reckon Spiats borrowed from RE5 a bit also Uroboros the virus in RE5 is a black goo type liquid, Elysium borrows from a game called Vanquish pretty heavily as well... Also a lot of Terminator 2 inspired level design and enemy's like Nemesis and Mr X in Resi 2 and 3 are clearly a nod to T2.

Honestly, I feel like they didn't really know about LV-426, at all. Yea, they have a specimen, maybe they found big chap.. Not sure, scoping the zeta reticula system? They have other stuff to experiment with yes, but had no idea about the gold mine that would have been LV-426 (I mean, an entire engineer ship? Even if they ALREADY have others, they would want that too). I feel like they just didn't know if LV-426 was the planet the Nostromo stopped at until Ripley comes back in Aliens. Now they have all sorts of stuff going on between Alien and Aliens that includes the goo, xenomorph samples, probably even an actual engineer ship/tech.
I was also trying to figure out how big something like "Zeta Reticula System" would be. I mean, at first I thought it just meant the planetary system, but I guess it would be a galaxy system - a large area? I think maybe the RPG has more info on that. I feel like its a very very large area of space that has thousands of stars within it.
To me, Weyland-Yutani didn't necessarily know what was to find on LV-426 before the events of "Alien." After all, there was only an encrypted signal warning anyone not to come. So they added a synthetic to a crew of space truckers and sent them to investigate. They then learned from Ash that a xenomorph was found. Jackpot! But with the USCSS Nostromo suddently gone without a trace, maybe the company elected to set a terraforming colony on the same planetoid hoping to retrieve what led an entire ship to vanish. Only when Ripley returned did they find out what the creature was.
This is spot on. The company had to of sent those people to their death on Hadleys hope on purpose because in Alien they clearly know their is a specimen on LV426. This will clearly fill in the blanks
It makes no sense to set up a colony, terraform the planet - then wait 20 years to send anybody in to investigate. Then when the thing you expected all along happens - you send unbriefed marines in armed with nukes - instead of a fleet of science ships?
Had Ferro left the ramp closed on the drop ship - the marines would have been evacuated after the first battle and would have "nuked the site from orbit" per Ripley's suggestion.
Why would Wayland Yutani risk their 20+ year investment in time and resources on a bunch of trigger happy grunts?
The film makes it clear that's not what happened. They don't own the colony, they co-financed it. Burke instructing the colonists to investigate was a cost-savigns measure. He assumed they would just report back if finding something.
Facts .
It makes zero sense. Why go to all the trouble of setting up a colony, atmospheric processor etc - then leave it to bake unsupervised for over 20 years, only to send in a squad of trigger happy marines armed with nukes and accompanies by a person deeply traumatised by her previous encounter with the species and who wanted to see them dead.
If this was the intended fate of the colony all along - why didn't the company have a science vessel in orbit monitoring the situation, and why didn't they send research ships in when the colony lost contact (indicating an outbreak).

I thought that was well established in Alien that the company knew because the ship was redirected while the crew were asleep. Yep. I agree with your theory. Weyland knew all along that something was there.
WY knew about the xeno before the first movie. WY probably noticed that the Nostromo would be passing by LV-426 on its route and decided that is the easiest way to get a crew to check out a very hazardous situation. That's why Ash was switched in just before their trip.
Yes, WY is the big bad that makes bombastic plans just to achieve simpler goals. Such is the way of evil business. That is why they started terraforming LV-426; find some more xeno specimens and build more land under the company name if the people survive.
Iv thought about it a lot ,you Do a commendable job trying to piece it together but in my opinion the first 30/40 mins of the aliens movie is so full of massive plot holes that all makes no sense that it can only be explained by incompetence on Cameron’s behalf , its still my favourite movie ever along with alien ,but a spade must be called a spade no matter how much I love the film ! I thought Special order 937 was a directive set down into mothers logic, the conversation seamed oddly ambiguous to me the way it stated rerouted to new coordinates as a statement prior to investigate life form.
I've always thought this was not them actually in communication with anybody, Mother had this as a general rule made into its logic, and rather Hal like made completely inhuman decisions based on the hierarchy or directives.
That is what gave this scene more gravity to me in any case, I get the feel that they had encountered quite a variation of alien species by the second film, I don't think WY had any clue about what they were actually in for in the first film.
Maybe though there’s a clue in Alien where Dallas says to Ripley that Ash replaced the usual science officer days before the Nostromo headed out to collect the mined material.

I think it's way more creepy to consider that ABS brakes failed, it all became a train wreck because Ash and Mother lacked proper situational awareness and just couldn't judge how best to handle the situation.

You don't need the big bad corporation trope pushed so hard, it diminishes from the story a bit to me. I think WY is more like the film Brazil where its a shit show of clowns that have no idea whats going on most of the time.

In the original Alien (and Aliens), the bad corp made sense as one of the many issues with an aggressive capitalism steamrolling on the needs of the individual in the 70s-80s.
I think you're right in saying Weyland-Yutani is a faceless/heartless company, where any means justifies the ends.
I like to also propose that Weyland-Yutani also were sending the Colonial Marines to their deaths, too. They were funding the trip to Hadley's Hope. Considering how big the Sulaco is, it looks like it was capable of carrying twice the number of marines we see. Also, considering they had a second drop ship, it suggests that typically, there'd be a two-squad team on board the ship. Since Weyland-Yuntai were sending the marines, they may have made a deal to send the marines with only one squad being sent in hopes of being able to still capture a specimen. Had Ripley not gone, there's a good chance all of the marines would have gotten killed in the nest. And seeing Michael Weyland was on a ship in the area of Fury 161, why would he just so happen to be on that very ship? Simple answer: that ship was on its way to LV-426 a short time after the Sulaco left and had no idea that the colony got nuked due to the damage to the atmosphere processor. They were planning on getting a specimen, and sent the marines with half of the crew they normally would carry in addition to having Gorman, who had only one prior combat drop under his belt and was still wet behind the ears, they were hoping that the marine's deaths could provide some useful information (and they sent Burke because he could control Gorman, who in turn would control the marines, and also who was expendable also. Think about it: Burke may have been under orders from a higher up to send the coordinates to the colonists in hopes of them becoming infected).
But that's just me.
The company should also take some tecnology from the ship with the eggs on? And not just the some eggs
why would W/Y put an ENTIRE facility on LV426... and it's GREAT expense.
So they could move in and study the xenomorph, the colonists establish the facility that the scientists will then use, once the colonists have been turned into specimens

Really makes you wonder what the point of the marine detachment was then. If they wanted to get a xeno to Earth, there were easier ways.

There's no cannon violations from ANY of Sir Ridley's films or Cameron's and/or Fincher's that couldnt be explained with a good story/explanation in a sequel.
For example; We learned indisputably from Alien 3 that all computer activity on ships, Colonies, or outposts owned by Weyland is AUTOMATICALLY relayed to the NETWORK.
So, all investigations on Acheron, including walking distance coordinates for the Juggernaut were relayed to the NETWORK.
Wether automatically or intentionally by Ash; dosent matter. The NETWORK knows. Period.
Here's a few theories for you Mr. H;
1. David IS the NETWORK.
2. The Space Jockey is a Frankenstein creation by DAVID intended to serve a 'Prometheus' myth sentence, akin to Prometheus having his innards eaten by the Eagle.
3. The eggs in the Juggernaut are eggs created by the 2000+ Embryo's from the Covenant.
At any rate, the Company would always have limited knowledge of the Xenomorph's, because individual company members would want exclusive rights to themselves-
-and the Company has to hide their human rights violations with persistent bio weapons experiments.
For me it feels that Romulus is only establishing even more confirmation to the horrors that Weyland-Yutani is up to. And I, of course, welcome this. I have never ever questioned that the company knows a hell lot more than what they ever admit & even what the films even tells us overall. Nor do I dismiss that far from all within Weyland knows what few individuals, mostly at the top, plans & decides to do. The people questioning Ripley in Aliens either knew nothing of what truly happened with the Nastromo & therefor they can deny the truth with conviction since they truly don't know, or they are all or some very talented liars.
But why is there a colony, Hadley's Hope, on LV-426 if Weyland always knew of the derelict there? And why did it take so many decades before the Xeno outbreak even happened? In fact, it tragic-ironically "needed" Ripley's knowledge to happen. It may not be canon, but the novel Alien - River of Pain tells the story of the actual outbreak at Hadley's Hope (this is one of several such stories that exists but are not considered full canon). In the novel, & even more so in the audio drama of the same novel, Weyland scientists are even sent to Hadley's Hope for the very secret purpose to study the Xeno's. According to this novel Weyland-Yutani knows that this alien life form exists in this solar system but is still not sure of the exact planet body. The strongest contender is LV-426 but they are still not sure since nothing of what happened with the Nastromo is fully confirmed. So they build the colony, as indeed a secret lab-rat hands down, just in case it is the same planetoid. If not, the base is still close to the source. The official reason for Hadley's Hope is to be an outpost where you stop before you continue to another world. If the colony works, great. But it & whoever lives & works there were always expendable, just as the Nastromo crew & also the cargo. So, according to River of Pain, the company knew they were close but didn't have exact directions of the source to the Xeno. And the answer as to why they didn't find the derelict without Ripley's given coordinates is that mapping LV-426 is hard & also dangerous. The whole world is still volcanic in places & is far from ideal for land expeditions. And even if they have mapped a lot from satellites in space they have still not been able to see exactly everything. The bad weather that the actual terraforming producers makes mapping from space in fact harder. One could indeed argue that this is still a BS explanation & that they, with their technology, still should have found the derelict much sooner. BUT I read just days ago that NASA, right here & right now in our real reality, has discovered a brand new gigantic volcano on Mars in one of that planets most famous & studied regions! Why they had not seen the volcano before until 50 years later is explained that they misunderstood earlier observations & the surrounding canyon it is located in kind of camouflaged the volcano as well. So even if the "new" volcano on Mars is enormous & is located in a very popular & well-explored area it still took us 50 years to properly discover it & realize what it actually is! If we can miss far larger structures for so long on Mars today, why can't they miss a derelict spaceship on a very much smaller world in another solar system roughly 150 years from now? Even if they were even directly looking for it? I find it easier & easier to accept that Weyland-Yutani indeed knew about the Xeno's but they didn't know the exact location, not even the exact world, just the solar system. And the rumors states that what they have in Romulus comes via a, let's call it a detour. Still from LV-426 but via a detour. We'll all see in August what that means. But the company knew. In the time between Alien & Aliens, the company already had their hands on the Xeno, as both Isolation & Romulus suggests. But by the time of Aliens they needed & wanted more & the true purpose of Hadley's Hope is revealed, regardless if you include what River of Pain suggests or not.
Also, asks yourselves this; why was Burke even visiting Ripley at Gateway Station at the hospital? Why did the company feel any need at all to send one of their representatives to be there as soon as she wakes up? It might seem like a nice gesture for them to seem to care when a long-lost employee suddenly shows up after 57 years after a mission they sent her on. But why visit her already at the hospital? Why have Burke already there before she wakes up? They were desperate to know of her story, what Ripley exactly knows. So they can investigate & confirm the details they didn't have earlier but also to deny their real involvement asap. Of course they knew. They always knew. And Ripley's survival & discovery after 57 years is both a blessing & a curse to them. What valuable info can she provide to finally find what they need? And what info may she have that could damage them? No wonder they sent a guy that looks like a sweet little boy from next door but is in fact a wolf in cheeps clothing.

WY couldn't knew about the derelict ship and its content since all information were on the Nostromo and it got destroyed. Keep in mind that it was the ships computer who came across the signal and Mother decided to change course and wake the crew. This universe has no FTL communication and Ripley, the only remaining witness, was adrift in space for 57 and when she was found, there already have been pioneers on LV-426 with no scientist to investigate alien activity.
This is a retcon to justify a story set in that timeline for nostalgia reasons.

@royalecrafts6252 Scott copied the dark horse trilogy, with the engineers being in the 1st graphic novel and who designed the alien as a colonialsation device. In the end the aliens take the earth. Engineers leave to clear the planet before taking the aliens out and taking the earth.
Here's how I see it.
Weyland-Yutani, or at least some element of it, was well aware of the creature, and if you take AvP and AvP:R into account, then technically they are aware of two creatures. The prequels explain how those intial attempts went when Weyland-Yutani was less aware of the creatures.
Alien.
Weyland-Yutani sent the Nostromo to LV-426 to recover a sample. It failed. A rather costly ship,$42,000,000 in adjusted dollars. That cost doesn't include the massive refinery it was towing, nor the ore being processed in said refinery.
Space travel is, relatively speaking, safe and Nostromo's round trip travel time was less than a year, so Weyland Yutani would have known fairly quickly that the Nostromo crew had failed. In addition, the loss of the ship and cargo would have had an impact on Weyland-Yutani, loss of reputation and stock price. As a result those who knew of the retrieval attempt would have slid back under their stones wanting to avoid any fallout.
Aliens.
I don't think that everyone at Weyland-Yutani is "bad" or knew of the creature, and I seriously doubt that of those who debriefed Ripley knew about it.
Even Carter J. Burke is someone who I don't think knew about the creature initially, but after hearing of Ripley's wild tale, it peaked his interest, and he saw those $$$ flashing before his eyes. Alien ship, unknown creature, all ripe for a profit making effort. Burke does some sniffing around and learns, or at least suspects some truth to Ripley's tale, and gets Hadley's Hope to send someone to check the derelict site.
As for Hadley's Hope, again I'll say that I don't think everyone at Weyland-Yutani is "bad", or knew of the creature. I believe that elements of Weyland-Yutani, the bad ones who did know, began working behind the scenes to make LV-426 seem like a good investment for a terraformiming colony, so that they would be in a better position to make a more effective retrieval attempt from LV-426.
This would take time, as they need it to be under the radar, so an altered flyby analysis here, a doctored scan there, and LV-426 seems profitable. Hadley's Hope gets established, not for sample collection, but simply to make the place habitable. Once that happens then Weyland-Yutani can start exploiting the planet. Weyland-Yutani is in this for the long haul, both those who know of and are interested in the creature, and those who aren't.
Burke's actions effectively derailed Weyland-Yutani's efforts, both the good and the bad. It is my belief that once Hadley's Hope had been up and running for a bit, and stabilized the atmosphere enough, a second site would have been set up, away from Hadley's Hope and closer to the derelict, to make another retrieval attempt.
Other sources.
Other sources, whose canon is in question, have all shown that aquiring samples is possible. The problem lies with containment. People, and others, keep treating them like dumb animals, instead of an intelligent, probelm solving species. When intelligent beings get taken and used as lab rats, they want out.
The catch is that, in order to eradicate this species, you would need to understand the species, which means you need to study it, and so once more, even those who want to study to eventually eradicate them, capture and try to contain them. In order to be able to control the species, Which is what Weyland-Yutani wants they need to study it.
So as far as Hadley's Hope colony and why it's there? Much of the extended lore went over my head as a kid and teen, but as an adult I've found some pieces to fill in the blanks. The first is the company knew that a ship carrying xenomorph species was there they just didn't know where, as crazy as that sounds given the events from Alien but makes sense because there was a piece of info that was left out of the film. In the Alien novelization or extended ones the beacon that brought the Nostromo crew there was turned off by either Dallas, Kane, or Lambert so with out that beacon the company only knew the planet and not the coordinates of the specimens. So the company sends the colony down under the assumption that it's for terraforming the planet but really it's in the hopes of finding the ship. Now some people may go how did the colonists never come across the ship until Ripley gave her report with the coordinates of the ship well even after LV-426 was terraformed the planet was still very unpredictable in terms of weather as the storms it had were massive and caused a ton of interference with the electricals. Also when you look at the tech from the Aliens franchise it isn't the best or most advanced at times yes they have androids, yes they have faster than light travel, but it isn't Star Trek or even Star Wars for that matter. The tech of Aliens has some massive draw backs especially when it comes to locating things in Aliens when the marines find Newt all they know is something is following them not what or who, when the signal is received it takes a great deal of time for Ripley to discover the signal is a warning, most other franchises would have answers to those types of questions. So it's not a stretch to think even after being on a planet for decades that limited tech couldn't find a seemingly fossilized shipwreck on a very unpredictable planetoid.
Prometheus was a problem, but covenant with david creating the drone xenomorph type just kills the whole mysticism of the alien.

Exactly, Prometheus and Covenant didn't add anything to make the Xenomorphs more interesting or mysterious, those were pretentiously and unnecessarily philosophical.
Alien worked so well because of the casting and writing of characters, and left enough to the imagination to make the Xenomorph an interesting creature surrounded in mystery.
And Aliens expanded the lore enough with the eusocial aspect of the Xenomorphs in a way that still kept them mysterious while focusing on the human aspect and the corporate shenanigans of Weyland-Yutani just wanting to capture a specimen.
Nothing made sense.

If something's top secret it's very hard to tell who actually knows what. It's very likely that the board of inquiry in Aliens was deliberately kept in the dark by Weyland Yutani about what happened on the Nostromo and beyond - not least to downplay Ripley's story and make her look untrustworthy (psychological evaluation/treatment) "as an expendable" crew member. It's quite possible that Ash already transferred sufficient data before everything went wrong on the Nostromo. And even if not, it's very unlikely that the disappearance of the ship would be ignored for 57 years - especially if a secret special order is involved. Hadley's Hope may have also been built primarily by equally uninformed employees for the sole purpose of terra-forming. If something goes wrong, the reaction must be comprehensible to all outsiders, which is why the company sent the marines. It can only be desirable that the marines are killed - for whatever reason - so that the Xenomorph isn't made public.

Why would the company send a colony to their deaths? If the company knew Acheron had the xenomorphs. After Alien, Alien Romulus and Alien Isolation. Makes more sense to send a scientific crew with a full mercenary crew to capture a xenomorph then spend billions building a colony to terraform the planet.
David told Weyland Yutani at the end of Alien Covenant. The company always knew.
In the Alien RPG rule book, they have a introductory scenario. Where you are 5 crew that work on Hadley's hope and were out fixing an atmosphere processor then you all came back to the base that is overrun by xenomorphs. One colonist found the engineer ship and came back with a burster. A few corporates had a shuttle loaded with Ovomorphs ready to take them back to Wayland Yutanni. If they used this lore that is where the xenomorphs on Romulus came from. It would be cool if we find this out in the movie, because all the new lore that's in these rpg books has to be approved by Disney. Anyway that scenario is a blast to play and you can finish it in about 4 hours. Hit me up Mr. H if you want to live in a character in an alien movie. In the Alien RPG (which is considered canon) The flight recorder is recovered from the Nostromo in 2137. This is roughly 5 years before Romulus is meant to be set. I've always went with the theory that Weylend-Yutani, being such a large entity has various divisions acting separately from each other. Some more nefarious than others adds to the richness of this world. If it wasn't for basic and at times incompetent studio executives and Hollywood egos we could have had decades of quality movies and drama series that could have easily rivalled many of the major franchises today. We can only hope that this is a step in the right direction moving forward.
Everyone keeps assuming that the xenomorph specimens in Romulous are from LV-426. I am pretty sure that xenomorphs are on other planets even if we ignore the AvP series. They mention in both Alien and Aliens that the species was not indigenous to LV-426 because of the condition of the alien pilot. Could it be that the Engineers earlier used to drop live eggs on a planet instead of the black goo and since the incident with The Pilot switch to the goo canister drops? We never see the queen that laid the eggs on LV-426 (of course The Pilot could have jettisoned the queen before the chest bursting).
I have always thought that they maneuvered Ripley into going back to LV-426 just to get rid of a loose end since Burke was suppose to secure samples, two birds with one stone.
There are other worlds out there that has Xenomorphs as well. Alien Dark Descent is a good example of that. They haven't explored the Xenomorph Homeworld outside of the games and comics.
We don’t need explanations of where the aliens came from. The beauty of Alien was its simplicity. Just simple, claustrophobic horror.

As for Covent, making it cannon was a mistake, having David be the creator of the alien, takes the mystery about them away. It also separates the predator movies into a separate universe

Well, in the real world decisions by individuals at the highest level would not be known to persons outside of the elite circle. As far as countless people within the Weyland-Yutani company knowing of the Xenomorph's existence - it's highly unlikely as the Xenos would be deemed 'classified' or 'top secret' - so the likelihood that everyone within the company would know of any Xenomorphs on LV 426 would be minimal at best.
The issue I have is, that as Vanluin said, There have been people there for 20 years. What I think happened was, WY (A single person or small group) discovered the beacon, decoded it, realized it was a warning from an alien ship. And decided to keep it to them selves, rerouting the Nostromo to that location with Orders to bring back some form of Sample of Alien Life, at all costs.
They just didn't know what it was (assuming the events of Covanant and Prometheus happen) all they may have known was This is not a Human intelligence (UNTIL the third prequal movie is made we don't know how much anyone in the company Knew of the Xenomorph, or the Engineers). It's vital to recover it. So when the Nostromo failed to return, they sorta buried their involvement. And the data of the Derelict's signal got lost in the files. It wasn't until Ripley returned, with Co-ordinates that Burke was able to investigate, it is also possible he was hoping to make a big score on his own, not telling anyone of the location or what was there so when it was found, he could be the only one to profit. It's like Ripley said, "I just checked the Colony Logs, 6/12/79 signed Burke, Carter, J. Why didn't you warn them Burk, Why didn't you WARN THEM?"
And Remember the Ship the alien eggs were on had the "Alien lifeform, been here for a long time, Its fossilized" That takes tens of thousands of years. I don't think Humans were in space around that time. So what I think the Engineer ship was, was an ancient vessel that housed a cargo of the ORGINAL Xenomorph Species, Not the Bio engineered recreated monstrosities David created.
I can answer this. In Alien River of Pain(a more fleshed out version of Newts Tale) it’s explained that the company knew something had happened in that sector and knew what it might have been but didn’t know the exact origin. So they played the guessing/long game and decided to establish a colony on a random planetoid hoping to discover something in the future. If the spoilers are correct the research station Romulus takes place on only found the Giger Alien floating in space. Doesn’t mention finding Acheron or the derelict. If they did they wouldn’t need the Giger alien for the black goo. It’d be there in the juggernaut sitting dead on LV-426. So we can assume everyone in the movie dies and all research is lost. Because why would Burke risk his life if he knew these things existed elsewhere?

That makes sense why Hadley's Hope was chosen for a colony. They knew the Xenomorph was there but didn't know where to look exactly. Ripley surviving and being rescued filled in the blanks and they had a location now. It's almost as if Hadley's Hope was going to eventual be a stepping stone/research station. This weirdly answers questions we didn't really know needed to be asked. I love this explanation, it makes sense.
It doesn't make sense. If hadleys hope was intended to find the ship why would burke change the flight logs to get rid of any mention of the ship. And why does ripley stop hicks from killing burke saying he has to go back. Doesn't that show the whole company isn't in on the conspiracy?
@@festo512 Plus why would the company send marines armed with nukes? That's a pretty big risk. If Ferro had left the landing ramp on the drop ship closed - the marines would have been evacuated after the first assault and would have nuked the site from orbit - thus destroying decades of planning.
The ending of AVP2:Requiem hinted at this. Weyland and Yutani knew about the Xenomorphs long before the Nostromo crew's deadly terrifying encounter with a Xenomorph.
Probably already said, but I’m sure WY lost their specimens after Romulus… Ripley emerging later gives WY another shot at acquiring another specimen to replace what was lost. This is why the Hadleys Hope mission was so important for the company.
I always thought the company knew about the xeno during the time of Repleys encounter. Remember “ mother” did say “bring back organism”

Even Ash in ALien 1 was completely aware of the xenomorph and did seem to already have some knowledge about them. He gave the impression of being on a specific secret mission to obtain more knowlegde about them even at the cost of the crew. Such priotities would not have been set without at least knowing what to deal with.
My assumption is that, given the length of time for sub-light travel to get to these remote planets like LV-426, Weyland-Yutani probably had multiple concurrent missions/projects underway with the underlying purpose of obtaining a xenomorph specimen. I don't think there necessarily has to be a linear chain of events between movies. Additionally, LV-426 had one single ship of what was likely a fleet, many of which were potentially carrying a cargo of facehugger pods so there were probably a lot of opportunities for colonists/marines/etc. to have first encountered them. Ultimately, it's very clear that the company has vastly more information than they are revealing. Each movie/book gives us another piece of the puzzle.
Mr. H, you should have been on the drinkers site to help him and the other panelists to explain their concerns and criticisms of the trailer. Almost every point, or question they had, you have explained in you coverage. So it would be nice if you could set them straight on their issues.

Tbf. Weyland yutani knowing what they were doing regarding Hadleys hope, kinda explains their condescending attitudes towards Ripley & Her explanation of what happened on the Nostromo!
Something i always saw as a deliberate move by WY was how the marines original Lt was swapped out for the inexperienced Gorman two days before they shipped out. Clearly they knew then and didn't want anyone to get in the way of procuring any specimans.
Yet they sent a warship armed with nukes? Had Ferro left the drop ship landing ramp closed - the marines would have been evacuated after the first assault and nuked the site from orbit. That's a pretty big risk for the company to take.
I think WY knew about the ship and were grooming the colony for it - however it wasn't quite ready as a containment facility. Burke only found out about when Ripley told her story and at that point - not knowing WY wider plans nor understanding the power - thought he'd be the new corporate hero and sent a survey team to check it out.
My theory is that WYC wanted a queen and/or wanted to see what a large scale infestation was like thus they sent the terraformers to their dooms.
Previous contacts appear to have involved just a single xeno (haven't seen Romulus so don't know if there is one or many xenos) and the weapons division were interested in a large scale infestation or they theorised the existence of a queen. For them capturing a queen would make things a bit easier as they would have an unlimited and easier to obtain source of eggs.

The colony size infestation could have been a field test of the xenos against current conventional military forces - hence the presence of the colonial marines in the rescue mission. Bourke was there as an expendible observer but would have been told to capture a specimen as a cover in order to keep to real purpose of the mission secret (Bourke no doubt was not aware of the true purpose)
