- From about 1150 onwards the monarchy began to play a much larger part in the management of the justice system in England. Of course, it would be several centuries before the legal system that we know today would be in place, but the start of jury led trials began in this period. Some medieval laws and punishments seem quite shocking by today’s standards and justice during the period was certainly not without its faults and cruelties. Lets take a look at 7 obscure types of medieval laws!

I think you should do some Medieval folklore.. monsters, beasts, tales mythical creatures stuff like that. That would be cool, just a suggestion.
@Big Lou hella funny bro . . . Not.
@Big Lou some bar owner had a magnum bottle of Famous Grouse whiskey on display. He stuck a picture of his mother-in-law on it. His wife was not amused.
Strange how the dragon kept popping up in history and mentioned in the Bible. But nobody to date has discovered dragon bones.

Ashbourne in Derbyshire UK still play football where one side of the town plays the other. In the street. Most shops shutter windows due the ahem joy for the game.
My aussie mate couldnt believe it when he saw that. Also cheese rolling lol
One of my Southworth ancestors, several years after being dubbed a knight baronet, refused an invitation to become a knight of the garder. Said refusal was accompanied by a payment to the king that was equal to the cost charged to become a knight of the garter (after all, it was a money-maker for the king) but he escaped the increased duties that went along with this elevation in status.
All of a sudden my work day is 100% better
Pope Innocent was protesting too much with that name 😂
An entire village ran and hid in the woods? 🤣 Why does that make me laugh so hard?
I also laughed, its straight out of Monty Python
Glad I wasn't born back then, talk about stressed out.
I find it interesting that the peasant class had their own set of laws and justice system. The peasants would vote on who would be the "leader" or "ruler" of said peasant class of the village. They had court cases led by the peasant men of the village and they appoint a judge from neighboring villages or had a nobleman come to act as judge. The peasants would reach agreements in guilty or not and to settlements. The peasants weren't dumb, dirty, stupid, overburden mules at the bottom. They needed to government themselves and their communities. You could say they introduced the early forms of what we now see as modern democratic process and democracy. 🤔 the royal families and nobles were too busy dealing with the capital and national affairs to be nick-picking at local peasant laws and squabbles, so the peasants needed to learn to read and write. There was a reason why these were called the "Dark Ages" we are the ones in the dark about this era due to lack of evidence... lack of documents and artifacts of the lives of the everyday folk. The more findings coming out and shared with the general public the more we realized that the Medieval era was far more complicated and amazing than originally thought.
Question: Were there food or apparel police?
And putting animals on trial? A set of absurdity.
Hey maybe we should bring back the laws about lying for our politicians?
Man the wording on the wasting a Scot with a longbow law is so confusing. So much time spent practicing my archery in the vain hope that eventually Michael Gove would make a visit to the City of York, lo and behold he does, and it turns out they meant **the Scot** has to have a longbow.
Sadly my attempt to hand him the longbow was just met with confusion
Wright you would have been right to have stifled the life out sic' a shite wi' a 'the approbation of a' Scots !
An attempt was made and for that I applaud you.
Sounds like you need the law enacted on you

Iit makes serious mistakes about history. The dude is WRONG about Venice being the biggest city with 100 000 people. During that time Paris had a population with estimates between 250 000 and 750 000.

More recently in Canada, in the town of Thorold blacks had to leave town before sunset & you couldn't sell your house to an Italian.

I'm not a historian but I don't think that prisons was a punishment. The jail was a holding place until the judge came to pronounce the punishment.
These videos are so interesting and well presented. I hope this man is teaching history somewhere. Had I taken a class from him early in my education I may very well have majored in history instead of anthropology. Seriously! Keep them coming please.
The dude is WRONG about Venice being the biggest city with 100 000 people. During that time Paris had a population with estimates between 250 000 and 750 000. By the way, some of those laws actually make sense, like limiting the expenses of the nobles to avoid uprising from the peasants.
I excommunicate you Locusts from the church!!! I'm sure they were heartbroken. :( LOL!
I remember as a kid my family in Long Island was the first to get the new gadget. In the summer of 1971, my parents bought a SONY TRINITRON 20" color TV. The picture was crystal clear and amazing. I thought it was nice they let me use my grandmothers until they gave it to her for Christmas. Stayed up real late in my room watching crystal clear color. I compared color to FM stereo, and black and white to AM mono

He must mean Henry VI.
The English food course limits must be why English speaking countries generally have single or two course meals, while countries like Spain and Italy are known for multi course meals.
12:57 bruh, wtf?!? 😂😂😂 I would have added that picture too, but from the look on the faces of the goat and the guy, if he pushed any harder, it was going to be more than air, flying outta that thing, lololol!

Those look a lot like Bewick's swans and not mute swans. Edit: the solitary swan was a mute swan.
Wow, Royals were haters. Not letting the peasants be great. These laws were messed up and remind me of today. And I agree that soup should be considered a sauce 😂
Some of those laws need to be brought back.
Yeah, like - that was worse than factory farming and husbandry? I agree. Also, Middle Ages platforms are cool!
Best intro ever hahah

Have you already done a video on the dancing plague in Germany? If not, I’d love to see your take on that weird occurrence. Thanks!
I'm sure he would only find the same info every other video about it has. What you actually want is some new evidence or an answer to why it happened. Proof it did or didn't. I'm sorry but the world may never know.
Up until the early 1980's Trial by Combat was still on the law books in Scotland. It wasn't until an armed robber demanded it at the Sherriff's Court that anyone realised the law was still in place. Cue some very quick legislation to remove it.
It still exists in some parts of America.

The arbitrary rules on clothing exist to the present day in the military as regulations for the wear of uniforms and even "civilian clothing".

Football matches haven’t changed much, there’s always violence and destruction by the fans.

I'm guessing York walls while the video is paused but I grew up near York and spent many days there.
Those clothing laws 🤢🤮
You know this isn't Medieval, I always used to wonder exactly WHY, outside of taxation, having a king was a big deal to the 13 Colonies. I kind of get it now.
The first thing I thought of when 'an entire village hid in the woods' was, "Oh, like the IRS!" (tax people in the States)...here we are taught it (the Revolution) was because it took forever for anything to be decided across an ocean and back, and also the British army had pretty much gotten rid of the threat of the French from the North in Canada. We're a bunch of ingrates. ;)
Get what ? And what isn't mideval? Your statement or his video? Depending on what your trying to say I know what you mean .
Some of these laws were complete lunacy
I would like to see something about the residual pagan celebrations, like the wild men coming into town during holidays.
edict of expulsion is still technically in place but good luck upholding that lol or even discussing it on this platform
I used to like Eddie 3 until I found out he banned football. Might organise a 5-a-side match right on his gaff in Rotherhithe.

The legal kill thing wasn't repelled until about 7 years ago. LMAO.

Yes and yes.
Psst the swans on the lake in the video are not mute swans but whooper swans.

Hilariously I was just watching Count Dankula and the entire Scottish and British governments would answer a resounding “yes” to that first question.
It’s funny to see how little the British government has changed in how intrusive and authoritarian it can be but for their own “magnanimity”.
Don't tell Moggy or the boys at Downing street that you can kill a Scotsman. LOL jk
🙂💥🗡 Oh, my, oh so hospitable!

Killing a Scot is no longer legal? My bad!
“The problem with Scotland, is that its full of Scotts!”
Who is Scott? 🙄😂 As a *Scot*, I can confirm there are more than just Scotts. We have McDougalls, Campbells, Murrays - lots of surnames 😌✌🏻
Well you won't have to worry about them from next year, they won't be in your country anymore.
Seems a trifle harsh - but oh well.
Jesus, the whole “you can only wear these clothes and you can only spend this much” is so awful. Royalty and Nobility were really the worst human beings ever, the more you learn about history (and in pretty much any era), the more you learn that human beings with power are usually pretty awful to those without. It’s kind of funny too if you think about it, they almost always claim they’re special in some way, usually “chosen by god” and yet acted in the most unchosen way possible, proving that the poor were probably better people in general. Today, we’ve managed to get rid of the idea that the powerful are “chosen”, but they still tend to act the same way as nobility did throughout history, we seem great at creating new technologies, but pretty bad at evolving into a society that can function where everyone can eat and live happily, it’s still crushing the poor and different to gain power.
Oh, I think everywhere they are still pretty much convinced they are 'chosen'.
@@danatowne5498 yeah, that probably pretty accurate, unfortunately
John Oliver turned down a knighthood as well.
