  • Saint Augustine’s ideal of the unbreakable marriage dominated the Middle Ages. By the late medieval period the marriage vows contained the phrase ‘till death do us part’, emphasizing the seriousness of the commitment that was being made. And it certainly was serious! In today's episode of Medieval Madness, we will be exploring divorce in the middle ages, as well as taking a look at the story behind Ridley Scott's newest film The Last Duel, starring Adam Driver, Matt Damon and Jodie Comer.

I'd reconsider the statement regarding horses and bride price. A horse was not even remotely 'trivial'. It may seem so in the contemporary context. A trained destrier is roughly the equivalent of a Bugatti Veyron. The majority of people travelled on foot and via waterways, so a horse is serious coin and an important status symbol for the recipient.

@@greatpower6063 Lol. Kinda easy to claim you are a virgin. I mean, just don't pee on demand to prove it. But that's nonsense anyhow. Then again those assumptions were probably born in some monk's head and written down at a monastery for all we know - and he had likely been left to grow up at a monastery around about 7 years old - so what the hell did he know. Just one more of the religious nonsense thought up by men who weren't necessarily that knowledgeable about the way things work anyhow. Not that there wasn't a lot of monks visiting the local whores too. But I suspect that it may have been a bit different sort of a man who would have written all those things they then put in writing about women and those who just decided to 'have fun' per say.

It was much more likely for a woman to bring a champion and these techniques shown in codex were mostly speculative. Not to mention a married couple fighting to death like this sounds pretty far fetched even for medieval times.

Interesting that presented this so one-sidedly, as if the male peasant was free to do as he pleased, or the male aristocrat wasn't as bound to the rules of marriage-treaty as the female...
I will present this hint, and nothing more, love as the motive of marriage is a privilege suitable to times when technology relieves _both_ the male partner of the risks of his role and the female the toil of hers. When his life is nothing but labor, and hers also nothing but labor... the survivability and compatibility of each takes precedent.

No wonder my very religious first wife kept dreaming that I would die…. It was her escape route while maintaining her faith.

It is interesting to note st Augustine was responsible for the Catholic objections to divorce what she believed is not terribly important he had no direct contact with Jesus and he was not a mistake hundreds of years after Jesus my opinion is better than his many respects as I have received revelation from God when I was a child which led me to believe divorce is permissible and so is polygamy
