- Mediaeval phantoms were commonly referred to as revenants. There are reports of spectres floating through walls, like a transparent sheet or sail floating through the air. Some of the apparitions were described as being much more unhappy and paler than they had been in life and were dressed in ragged clothing. But many seem to be far more palpable than how we imagine a spirit to be today. There are reports of ghosts being grappled with and physically held until a priest could come and hear their confession and enable them to leave their earthly prison.

I’m fairly sure that 90-95% of historical ghost sightings were barn owls. A screaming barn owl is absolutely terrifying.
Owls are terrifying full stop. Ever tried to outstare one? You can't.

Sir Osbert was a brave man. One of my running routes on Salisbury Plain takes me up and over an Iron Age Hill Fort. I ran there at dusk on a winter afternoon and it was so eerie. No birdsong, just the wind through the trees. It felt as though I was being watched by unseen eyes and as if the fort is guarded by the spirits of long dead warriors.
The term Revenant was first used in the early 19th century, well past the medieval period. Revenir, the french origin of the word WAS used in the medieval period by the French, but not necessarily to describe a ghost, it primarily had mundane uses as it basically just meant to return or come back. Just wanted to clarify that one since I'm a nerd about words, the medieval period, and all things spooky.

'what did medieval people think of ghosts'. that sentence almost made me smile.
The whole idea about ghosts being demons trying to trick you sounds so accurate to me... I had a loved one pass last year and during the first night I had candles lit all over my room (unrelated to mourning, I just like candles and medieval-ish aesthetics) but as I slept, I had this wild dream that my loved one was in my room struggling to get up. Everything in my dream was perfectly accurate as if the dream wasn't a dream at all. This loved one was contorting and re-animating in my room. I felt sadness as I tried to help them recover since they seemed to be suddenly given a second chance at life, but then I saw nothing in their eyes. Just a blank stare as they tried to compose themselves. I tried to give them water and then I heard an ethereal voice telling me to "STOP, IT IS NOT THEM" over and over... "IT IS NOT THEM". The more I heard this voice getting louder in my room... the more realization and fear set in. As I looked at this relative with blank eyes and watched it struggling to physically function normally again, I got the most disturbing chills. I walked backwards and fell onto my bed. Then I woke up from that dream and I had the most intense cold sensation. It actually smelled like death in my room, that potent and strange smell. I opened a window and turned all the candles off. I could still hear the faint voice over and over telling me "It is not them". I felt like I was getting deceived by something truly evil, posing as my deceased loved one...
Overall, I'm not sure if it was just an intense dream powered by my cool brain or an actual paranormal encounter. I've had crazier paranormal encounters in my life that were significantly more "tangible". So, this didn't seem far from possibility in my mind. So maybe ghosts are demons trying to take advantage. I remember seeing this very compelling video of an old man that lost his wife after yeeears... he made videos showing ghostly activity in his house or talking about his nightmares or how he just wants to see his wife again. Then eventually he attempted to talk to the ghost that he thought was his wife. He had an experience that made him cry out of the sheer pain and fear that it WAS NOT his wife trying to talk to him from beyond... it was something sinister taking advantage of him. The whole time he had been holding out hope that all these paranormal encounters he filmed or experienced were his wife touching him or trying to contact him. Then after his last major experience he was hit with that sudden realization and all his hope was gone. It was the most authentic emotional ghost video relating to this idea that ghosts are demons pretending. I felt everything this man had felt just on a lesser level.
Curious can you link the video because I want to see it admiditly I believe the word ghost can be a catch all term referring to a whole manner of spectral entity's all though it is commonly used to refer to human spirits. I do believe sometimes if a person is stubborn enough they can come back as a spirit often in fear of were there going to be headed but of course it's very rare and the grim reaper himself along with the creator does not want them roaming around as wandering restless spirits but I do believe demons will also use that fact to go around and pretend to be spirits of deceased loved ones often in an attempt to lure and deceive them so they can commit thier evil deeds. so in conclusion the term ghost is kinda a catch all term and I do believe in some cases the ghost is a human spirit but of course it can sometimes also be a demon in disguise trying to trick. so more of a 50/50 in sense depends on whether the entity harms you or not that can determine if your dealing with casper the friendly ghost or a demon pretending to be a human spirit.
Dang. I totally believe you. I think ghosts can rarely be souls in purgatory but mostly it's probably things like what you encountered. Who knows how it may have fucked up your life if you had been deceived by it :|
Have you considered that some ghosts are other spirits pretending to be, but some ghosts really are those people?
I had nightmares of my mother after her death. She would be in a hospital bed. But she was twisted and more like an animated corpse. It was like all the sickness of her addiction had consumed her soul. And that sick twisted creature was all that was left.
I also had similar nightmares of my brother in law after he died. But his head was separated from his body. And it was more like an animated corpse than something alive. What was moving the meat of his head and face around was something sinister.
I still occasionally have dreams of my mom being 'alive'. Usually not as horrible as those first nightmares though.

It's funny that all the hauntings, miracles, and other magical acts seemed to stop with the invention of the camera. Plus, if you think about it... Why are all ghosts and ghouls either of the medieval Era, colonial Era, or modern Era? People have been dying for millions of years. Where's the story of the Caveman ghost who drew cave drawings on people's walls? I wanna hear about Unga-Bunga the feces slinging ghost.

Ghosts and Spirits are very very real, believe me... Had some encounters with some of Them and all i can say is: get a Cat! It Wont Stop the Ghost But you will know Wether it wants to Harm you or Not.
Weirdly, I just feel safer/more at peace in my over 100 year old home now that I have cats.

For anyone interested in an in-depth telling of the Norse Draugr tale of Amsund and Aran, I highly recommend Ocean Keltoi's video on it.
I bet that the spiritual world or beliefes of paranormal entities was far more present during the middle ages. Just to put it simply, there was no artificial light during the night. And if we add to this the very poor education of most people, it was actually very easy to believe in various demons, werewolves, witches or ghosts. Imagine an inky black night in some medieval village near the forest, and some wailing of wild animals, surely many people have had a sleepless night. People must have been scared of unknown. Not all of them of course, but l bet there were quite a lot of them.

I've seen 3 ghosts (simultaneously). They were transparent white, as if made of fog, but without being foggy (nor was it foggy weather). They were as visually crisp and detailed as any human being, though became increasingly transparent the further the sun rose (as it was dawn). They moved in slow motion, and over the course of the hour or so that i watched them, one had walked through a fence and the other two had barely made any notable progress at all. I could tell they were military in uniform (one on a horse), but of what kind I don't know. Interestingly, they challenge what I otherwise would have imagined should have debunked such a story. "How does a ghost keep his horse?" I might have asked if I'd heard the story instead of witnessed it myself. Why they appeared that morning and never again, I also couldn't tell you. I'm not completely sure though if they were actually souls wandering or if it was merely some kind of "echo" of them left behind somehow.

@@kyoku1982 The backyard of the house I grew up in. I'm 36, this wasback when I was maybe 10. Do the math, we didn't all have recording devices in our pockets at the time. And as children are stupid, we seemed to judge even being awake at that hour getting us in trouble was more important than showing our parents the ghosts in the yard. I was so enthralled I could hardly take my eyes off them to begin with.

@@kyoku1982 No, two of my older brothers saw them. The elder of the two was the one who awakened me to see them. He clearly brought me downstairs to make sure he wasn't crazy, because he refused to tell me what he was waking me for, only insisted i go downstairs with him, where he then pointed out of our glass back porch door and asked something along the lines of "what do you see out there?", to which i described seeing army men and a horse, and he concurred, and then sent me to get our other brother to have him verify the same. It was on the very northern tip of Delaware. Brandywine area, just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania border.

Yes, when I began to watch these a few days ago, I tried to look up playlists and there was nothing there. So now I'm having to just pick my way through all the content to find things I am most interested in. Come to think of it, that might be smart - like grocery stores putting the necessities like bread and milk at the very back of the store, so you'll just keep on picking up grocery items along the way.

Souls in Purgatory weren't deemed perfect, just good enough to get to Heaven eventually (or having said the right prayers and had the right beliefs and rites etc). Purgatory was to purge away their sins through temporary suffering.
Had some Talk with a colleague of Mine about people suffering or nagging because they cannot "Go" ( die) and you Always ask why. Her words " purgatory Starts in lifetime" Had me thinking.

No DNA testing has been carried out on any remains suspected to be those of the two Princes.
So fun with the first Norse draug, having the same name as my father, something I tease him about sometimes. The name is quite typical Scandinavian though, just a mix of Thor and Elf. So I'm guessing there's some mysterious story behind this legendary draugr.

They thought they were what they are .. spirits. Or, in other words, the animating energy that gave life to a material body did not 'disappear' but changed - modern physics has a similar sort of notion. Revenants were more like zombies, physical corpses .. but somehow still alive (and capable of being stopped), that is, popular stories rather than philosophical explanations of fleshly death.

I always heard the idea of a Revenant originally meant zombies brought back for a specific purpose (with said purpose usually relating to a goal the dead person had but failed to accomplish in life), & the notion of "a zombie that can think for itself" that most associate with the term nowadays is relatively new.

unrelated but I took an english history class once and had a look into the history of thomas beckett and king henry II, we watched a movie about it, and we were bombarded with homoerotic subtext about two historical figures but more importantly it was educational but I wonder if Beckett's sainthood and the ghost thing are related.
According to the Catholic Education Resource Center, "The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned." It is NOT torture, though there may be "pain" as the soul is "tried in God's fire" to refine it as gold is refined from ore.
