Authoritarianism is not the problem. The issue is a racially defined settler state that insists on maintaining one ethnic group in permanent superiority. Israeli Jews should have a right to live in peace and security (just as Palestinians should have the same right), but a settler state defined by racial exclusivity does not, especially when it has been established at the expense of the dispossession and ethnic cleansing of the indigenous population. The problem is the racist, ethno-nationalist political ideology of Zionism, and until the world (and especially the USA) is prepared to stand up and say that this is not acceptable or tolerable then the conflict and the misery and the death will go on and on and on.

The case of Israel is a classic case of the abused becoming the abuser. It would be wonderful if the UN as a body mandated to reduce conflicts and war around the World grew some teeth and became effective in living up to that mandate. All too often the UN fails in its duty of care just like the WHO failed at their mandate to stop global pandemics. Instead of a World built solely on a value system revolving around money and profit, we need a economic and political paradigm shift to a World built on a value system that's primary objective is the happiness and well being of every human being, no matter their country, their religion or color of their skin. Civilization means being civil, compassionate, empathetic, and having a society where no one is left behind.

The 'obligation' to Israel seems purely political. They don't seem to be much of an ally. Where were the Israeli troops in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan? I didn't see them next to our other allies. Did I miss them? Meanwhile Netanyahu meddles with our politics. Recall his visit to Boehner's House of Reps, making a heavily political speech and no acknowledgement to our President.
Families in Gaza have revived an old tradition where they switch their kids. That way if one area gets bombed, at least a few of their children will survive. They started this after Israel wiped out 12 families in the last week. These are families that lived in Palestine for generations and survived British colonialism, Nakba, bombings, hunger, poverty, and medical apartheid. They are not just numbers, they are HUMAN BEINGS.

People don't believe the mainstream media anymore and in the case of this latest conflict regular people on the ground are filming whats really going on and posting it online so we can see real time the human cost. There's also a certain 9/11 quality to it as we see apartment blocks blown up right in the middle of a city with little regard for the regular Palestinian people in the vacinity..

Bahrain must be a true friend to allow us to have a major base and to park a bunch of Navy ships there, and the US Coast Guard too. My daughter lived in Bahrain for 10 months as part of her deployment with an aviation squadron. She was not by herself.
