I bought a Tamron 17-70 just yesterday for my a6100 and I am blown away by the quality and range it offers. Its definitely something worth considering while looking at lenses for Sony APS-C cameras. For me, its an all in one lens I can carry easily on any of my trips.
That was my first lens for Sony APSC and still my most used lens. Bit of heft, but SO sharp with fast/smooth focus and good aperture speed. The paired lens then is the 70-200 for a two lens kit (though I have yet to commit to buy it).
This is close to the 5 lenses I have so I agree with you. 1) Sigma 18-50 2.8. Fantastic lens. On my camera most of the time. 2) sigma 16mm 1.4. Makes my life easy. It is sharp and wide. 3) I don't have it and don't think it fits my shooting style. I do have a Tamron 70-180 2.8 for the few times I need a telehoto. 4) Sigma 56. Can't live without it. Takes the best photos of any other lens I've ever used. 5) I sold my Sigma 30 1.4 because I do have a Sony 35mm 1.8 with OSS. Over time I decided the Sony 35mm was just a little better all around. My a6700 is scheduled to be delivered this Friday Aug 4. Can't wait.
Thank you for the video. Another great addition to this list that probably wasn’t available when this was made is the Sigma 10-18/2.8 DC DN to use along side the Sigma 18-50/2.8. Give it a try. The 23/1.4 wasn’t out when I picket up a great used 30/1.4 but if I stay with the A6700 I can see getting that as well. One other difference in my kit was the Sony E 15/1.4 G I bought used at a great price. Probably over priced but nice and small. Did buy it before the 10-18/2.8 came out so it might get sold but still a great lens. So I now have the 10-18/2.8, 18-50/2.8, 70-350/4.5-6.3, 15/1.4, 30/1.4, and 56/1.4 which gives huge coverage for a small kit. One other follow up question. What camera bag do you use for your kit? I recently started my RUclips channel and have been struggling with camera use for filming my material. The thing I need my camera for most is me doing wood working activities in a small garage shop. I have had a Nikon D5100 that I struggled with because it kept going out of focus or it would hunt to get focused. Although I didn't realize it, I think I tried to use it as a point and shoot type camera. So much of the time I would switch to my iPhone 14Promax and use that for my videos. I have realized I needed to up my game on my camera relative to something with good autofocus - my research led me to the A6700 (which I just purchased this week). After getting the camera and watching several YT how-to videos I realized I have so much more to learn about Camera Basics including how to setup the camera to work best for my needs, practical accessories, and simple things like what each cable does and how to use them. When trying to learn about Auto Focus modes and Metering or which mode of the camera (Auto P A S, etc) work etc. I find so many of the how to videos start with a base level of knowledge that it is clear I don't have. Binge watching material to figure all this out. Thank you for this video because trying to figure out the right len(es) I should have is part of my struggle. I started out with a 18-135mm lens and we will see how that works.
love this review :). For those of us who shoot with the A6700, or the previous A6000 series cameras my lens purchases are ALWAYS about size and weight. I travel internationally and if you want great zoom and better image quality, overall, you can't use a cell phone camera alone. So, my SMALL ALTURA sling bag contains the A6600 (now the A6700) plus three lenses: 30mm Sigma, 70-350mm Sony, 18-135mm sony. The Sigma 30mm is for night or interior shooting. If I'm planning on shooting lots of video I bring the very compact Crane m2. Thanks again

Hey tcm! I'm thinking of getting the Sony a6700 for recording lecture videos, especially at a distance of around 15 meters. Do you think it's a good choice for this purpose? If yes, could you suggest any specific settings or lenses that would work best? If not, I'd really appreciate your recommendation for a camera that's suitable for recording 90-minute lectures at a distance of 15-20 meters. Hi, the 6700 can definitely do it, you would probably be best to buy the tamron 17-70 f2.8 lens also. The only other thing that would need to be considered is the audio. U would need a mic.
Great review. I must admit that I have all those lenses. I have both the sigma 30mm & 23mm. Technically the 23mm is a better lens in terms of sharpness, focus speed and lower CA. However, I guess I just prefer the focal lenght of the 30mm for photographing people. It just gives more pleasing and less busy out of focus background in my opinion. I prefer the 23 mm as general walk around where the bias is more scenery and less people and I prefer the 30mm when the bias is more people and less environment.
I have almost the same kit for my a6500 I have all three of your Sigma suggestions and I have the Tamron 70-300 zoom which is brilliant on the crop sensor bodies. I don't have the 30mm Sigma but I do have the Sony 35 f1.8 OSS instead. I doubt if I will pick up the new Sigma 23mm as I also own the Sony./Zeiss 24 f1.8 which is a very nice ( and expensive!) APS-C lens. Thanks for this informative video.

Great selection and presentation! Personally I have the 16 and the 56mm on my a6100. I’ve been curious about wildlife photography, and man, a combo of 18-50 or 17-70 and 70-350 covers an incredible range and different use cases with only two lenses, if you don’t need the 1.4 aperture.

Question: Most YT reviews have labelled the Sigma 56 1.4 DC DN as the sharpest lens, albeit seemingly only fit for portraits. While I agree that is the perennial favorite focal length for portraits, I've found this lens to be quite useful for "tight" landscape/nature photos. I believe it's much sharper that the Sony 18-135 kit lens and has a bot more reach than the Sigma 18-50, which is also a terrific lens. Am I the only one out here who sees this lens being quite flexible in application? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
Great video :) I have Sony A6000 paired with Sony 35 mm f 1.8 and I sometimes lack something wider. Would you go Sigma 18-50mm or Tamron 11-20 or maybe something else? Cheers. I like to shoot photos and short videos a lot.

hi, I was looking for a single lens that allows me to take landscapes (even astro) and portraits In your opinion, with Sigma 18-50 or Tamron 17-70 I could do without a very wide angle (e.g. Sony 11mm or Viltrox 13mm) and Sigma 56mm?
@@alby3906 I've done astro, I prefer a Rokinnon 12mm ultrawide for that. It has worked extremely well. I was able to get 30 second shutter speed on it. For landscapes, it will really depends. I have the Tamron 17-70, I use it for portraits, pretty much all the time. My usual landscape lenses are prime lenses. The Rokinnon 12mm, Sony 20mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Don't see why can't use the 17-70mm for it though. That's been my favorite lens since I got it last August.
I shoot with the Sony a6600 my 4 lenses are, the Sony 16-55mm 2.8, the Sony 70-350, the Sigma 10-18, and the Sigma 56mm 1.8, no complaints, and certainly not looking to add any more.
Great information! Thank you so much. I avoided buying the kit lens altogether because of your video, and purchased the Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 G lens. As I am a student, I was able to get a discount plus an additional discount for bundling it with my camera, so the price was much more affordable. I was definitely interested in the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 too, but as I was in a position only just this once to get the Sony for such a great deal, I went with it. I also bought the Sony 70-350mm, based on your recommendation, for very good discount too. I am also very interested in the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 too, but just can't afford it yet.

Yes, the Sony 16-55 2.8 is perfect also! it was just a bit more $$$ than the sigma 18-50mm and I wanted to offer value as well. But wow, you got the perfect set-up IMO. PERFECT! MAcro is a tricky one, I have tried a few out and have settled on the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Full frame lens. Its good, but I dont use it much.
Thanks very much. I bought this as a set. So everything was about 698 EUR cheaper than buying it individually. Ithinh I don`t shoot Macro that often, but I want to have the possibility to do so. ;-) What do you think about the new 70-200 lens from sony? Is 2000 EUR worth it?
Thanks for sharing. I’m just missing a fast zoom in my kit. Got the Sony 10-18, Sony 18-105, sigma 16 and 56 and meike 35 f1.7. I leased the Sony 70-350 for the British F1 and I was impressed but can’t justify owning one as I don’t usually shoot tele. Need to decide between Sony 16-55 f2.8 and Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for a fast zoom. I’m leaning towards the Sony.
Yeah the sony is a excellent lens, only problem recommending it over the SIgma is the price difference. If they were equally priced I would take Sony. 🙂
@@TheCameraManReviews I check again about the Sony 16-55 and them minimum focus distance is not great. Sony needs to make an upgrade to this lens for better minimum focus distance, and that is where the Sigma is superior. It's a killer lens.
How about Stabilizer when using 3rd party lenses? Is it then IBIS only or OIS only? The 18-50 Sigma is looking absolutely awesome on the A6700, looks like a perfect fit for a good, small universal use combo. I wish Canon would bring out a RF-S version with 2.8 aperture.
Great video. For me it would be the Tamron 17-70 and 70-350 G. No gap in focal lengths except at the wide end to which I would add the 11mm 1.8. To me that’s an exceptional 3 lens APSC kit.
I'll keep throwing the Tamron 18-300 into the ring. It will blow your mind, how often you'll find yourself using it and how much background blur it will give you, even though the aperture is so small. Colors and rendering are great. All it needs is a bit of sharpening in the finish.
Great recommendations! I use the 16mm and 50mm sigma lenses all the time. I have the Sony 18-135mm and I've been pretty disappointed with it, not near as sharp as the sigma lenses

The other lenses I am thinking to buy are Tamron 11-20 and Sony 70-350 mm. My focus is on traveling and taking 3 lenses that will fit in a sling bag. What would be your suggestion? I just have the Sigma 16 mm for interior recording.
Hi, the Tamron 17-70mm is also a great lens, it really is a toss up between that and the Sigma 18-50mm. Advantages of the Sigma are, lighter, smaller, more compact and cheaper. Advantages of the Tamron, extra 20mm reach and comes with built in stabilization (not a big deal if you have the a6700 has it has IBIS.) I personally would go with the sigma and put the money saved towards another lens. But both lenses are superb and you cant go wrong with either.

@@plgl76 Well that is a good question. I have no experience with the 18-300mm Tamron, but I would go with the Tamron 11-20mm 2.8. But then again if I was to go for them, I would probably favor the 18-50mm sigma and the 70-350mm SOny. But I dont think you can really go wrong with either combo. I just have experience with the Sigma/SOny and it works extremely well. I get paid work, even when i am on vacation, with this combo.

Since I decided to start with the 6700, the question is really about budget and which set is better to start, considering that I want to use it in a holiday in Europe
Tameron 11-20 is what I pair with my Sigma 18-50 and I would recommend it to most people over the 16mm unless doing video at that focal length in low light (like a lot of us). Sony 70-350 is 100% the best consideration after that, I do agree. After that it's between the Sigma 16 and 56 depending on the kinds of things one shoots. Good video though.
If you go with the Sigma 18-50 and the Sony 70-350, do you think that the range between 50 and 70 mm is relevant? versus let's say Tamron 17-70 and Sony 70-350, seem all range is covered, or you think the Sigma 18-50 is so much better than the Tamron 17-70, that the 50-70 mm so doesn't matter?
@@plgl76 I like the lightness of the 18-50, weight is high on my list next to image quality, hence hating the kit lens. The 17-70 is a solid choice, but above 50 I'm looking at portrait mostly and the 56mm gives me both the focal length and the 1.4f that I adore the look of, I seldom feel I need to go longer in my portrait - so going up to 70 feels unnecessary. Cost was less of a consideration here, but going with the Sigma lets you afford a nice prime for when you want to go big on bokeh vs. the Tameron. At the end of the day, learning how you shoot and the focal lengths you need and which focal lengths do nicely with a good bokeh, for your kind of style - should help you choose your own zooms and primes.
I upgraded to the a6700 from the a6500. The Tamron 11-20, Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350 are my zoom lenses. I also have Sony 11mm, Sony 15mm, Sigma 23, 30 and 56 are my primes.
@@nathanealhuley1644 just ordered the 70-350, own the 56mm but am selling my 16mm as I don't do enough with it to justify keeping it. The few videos at home I do I'm happy with the Tameron.
On one of the sites, a person wrote a review of the 6700 camera. And here’s what he wrote, and I quote: Severe focus hunting with photos and also freezes the camera with Sigma 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. Probably an issue needing a firmware update on Sigma's end, but until then I cannot use any of my lenses. Did you have the same problems on a Sony 6700 camera with Sigma 16, 30 and 56 lenses? I already wanted to buy this camera with these lenses, but I saw this review.
I have not tried that combo, but I think it would be awesome, it would equate to a 150mm-600mm which would be epic. It would punch in a lot but for the right scene/subject it would be amazing!
Definitely agree on the Sony 70-350mm. It is my breakfast lens when I sit w/A6700 on mini-tripod videoing birds thru double glazed window at 240fps SloMo, buTT I am such a klutz a 89yo w/dyslexic thumbs I need a beginner's video editor w/U-tube tutorials as good as yours for the A6700. How about this deal? A. 10$ (sorry I have only shillings, no #s) for a recommendation that works: just simple cut & splice, dub voice over, capture single frames & adjust exposure. If it only takes you 5' thats $120/hour. WhaddaYaSay? TIA a beginners
emmm, I haven't tried the FE 24mm but I am sure it would work well, bare in mind it would be the equivalent to a 36mm on the Sony a6700 and it is pretty expensive. For your 2 suggested lenses and their prices, I would personally get the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 , Sony 70-350mm and then 2 other Sigma primes.
The Sony/Zeiss Sonnar 55mm f1.8 probably beats the Sigma 56 f1.4 as sharpest lens for E-mount. It is a full frame lens, but is very small and lightweight so is perfect for APS-C. I own both lenses and realistically the Sigma has a tiny advantage in that its lens hood stays on the lens better than the Sony hood stays on the 55, however, I use the 55 more because the images it produces are always very special. I also recommend the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 because it is so much cheaper than the Sigma 23 and is better than the Sigma in one very important characteristic. The Sigma is probably better as a stills photography lens because it is a little sharper in the corners and has less aberrations, but it has a fatal flaw in video. The focus breathing is horrendous. Forget lovely focus pulls. For all its aberrations, the Viltrox has no focus breathing, is as sharp as the Sigma in the center where it counts, and is a lot more affordable, so I give the Sigma 23 a miss.
Just purchased the A6700 last night, was caught on the fence between that and the A7C, went with the gut instinct of longevity and decided the A6700 would hold its value for longer. Anyone else have both cameras and can give a succinct comparison between the two?
Good List, though I think the Sony 15mm f1.4G is a better choice than the Sigma 16mm f1.4. My kit includes Tamron 11-20 f2.8, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, Sony 70-350G, Sigma 56mm f1.4, Sigma 90mm f2.8 DG DN. Also have Samyang 75mm f1,8 and 35mm f1.8 and Sony 24mm f2.8G. Have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and agree it's good but there are better lenses now in that range. Haven't tried the Sigma 23mm f1.4, looks a bit bigger than I would want to use, that why I use the 24mm f2.8G. Yes I know it's 'slower' but it's tiny and super sharp and far more discreet.
@@TheCameraManReviews I think it's great honestly. It's small and coverage especially for video is great when using stabilization within the body and f2.8 is plenty good for most situations. When I travel, it always goes with me, along with the Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350 and then a faster lens options like the 56mm.
I own both sigma 18-50 and Tamron 17-70 for my a6700. Can conclude that video on the Tamron isn’t great handheld. The sigma’s a no brained if you’ve got ibis and want a compact setup
if you want a kit lens that has oss and is fully weather sealed, id recomend the tamron 17-70 2.8. its a couple hundred bucks more than the sigma 18-50.
Yeah I have tried this lens out and its pukka. My only problem with it, and this is just from my point of view, Its so wide that I never found myself using it that much. If I ever need a wider shoot (which in my case is a rarity) I would do a pano and stitch 2-3 photos together with the sigma 16mm.
Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Its a bit of a beast in both size and weight, but the range means you dont change it very often. My kit is Tamron 11-20, 17-70, and the Sony 70-300 on my A6600. All fits nice in a sling bag. Looking to trade the FE 70-300 for the 70-350 APSC just due to the weight and size difference. They both perform almost identically.
@@plgl76 Honestly, I LOVE the 11-20. Takes sharper photo's than the 17-70, and the 17-70 is legendary. I am constantly amazed by the 11-20 and wish I use it more. I just dont have much need for the wide angle. The 11-20 fits so well on the A6600 body and just feels right. The 17-70 feels like a beast on that little body. I had to choose between the Sigma and Tamron and went with the Tamron just due to the added range. The Tamron does tend to fail a bit at 70MM F2.8 and I need to stop it down to 4.0 or I get bad contrast on bright objects. If you travel and want something that more agile, go Sigma 18-50 and Tamron 11-20.
nice , but i would change 1 lens , i like the tamron 18 to 300 , is not sharper , but its more wide angle than the 70-350 even if you give in a litle at the fare side
I would say no, doesn't have the focal length. It would be ok I guess with Basketball, but even then you would be better off with something around 200mm.

After a couple of months I'm leaning more towards the Sigma over the Tamron due to size and weight. I currently have the following and want to keep only three of the six. Tamron 11-20, Tamron 17-70, Sigma 18-50, Sigma 23mm f1.4, Sony FE 85 1.8 and Sony 70-350. Which three would you keep and why?
Can you comment the uses for each of these lens overall, and if I had to choose maybe only 3-4 which is best? I would assume I need one for portrait/people, landscape/scenery, cinematography and long zoom for super far distance.

Yeah a great lens also. It was a toss up between the sigma 18-50 or Tamron 17-70. I just feel that for the price the sigma represents better value if you consider that the Tamron is £300 more. But the Tamron is still a great lens.

At $1300 it’s a tough value proposition for APSC considering what you can get for the money. On the used market that would buy basically any of the G Master primes, and for a couple hundred more you can get a 70-200 2.8 GM. Personally I would never spend over $1000 for a dedicated APSC lens.
But for the price you can buy the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and get a cage, spare battery, and tripod with the savings. Does that not make more sense than the Tamron? Unless of course you can get the Tamron at a good price. I have used the Tamron and enjoyed it, but I just think the Sigma offers better value.

Hi, the 6700 can definitely do it, you would probably be best to buy the tamron 17-70 f2.8 lens also. The only other thing that would need to be considered is the audio. U would need a mic.

Great review. I must admit that I have all those lenses. I have both the sigma 30mm & 23mm. Technically the 23mm is a better lens in terms of sharpness, focus speed and lower CA. However, I guess I just prefer the focal lenght of the 30mm for photographing people. It just gives more pleasing and less busy out of focus background in my opinion. I prefer the 23 mm as general walk around where the bias is more scenery and less people and I prefer the 30mm when the bias is more people and less environment.
I have almost the same kit for my a6500 I have all three of your Sigma suggestions and I have the Tamron 70-300 zoom which is brilliant on the crop sensor bodies. I don't have the 30mm Sigma but I do have the Sony 35 f1.8 OSS instead. I doubt if I will pick up the new Sigma 23mm as I also own the Sony./Zeiss 24 f1.8 which is a very nice ( and expensive!) APS-C lens. Thanks for this informative video.

Great selection and presentation! Personally I have the 16 and the 56mm on my a6100. I’ve been curious about wildlife photography, and man, a combo of 18-50 or 17-70 and 70-350 covers an incredible range and different use cases with only two lenses, if you don’t need the 1.4 aperture.

Question: Most YT reviews have labelled the Sigma 56 1.4 DC DN as the sharpest lens, albeit seemingly only fit for portraits. While I agree that is the perennial favorite focal length for portraits, I've found this lens to be quite useful for "tight" landscape/nature photos. I believe it's much sharper that the Sony 18-135 kit lens and has a bot more reach than the Sigma 18-50, which is also a terrific lens. Am I the only one out here who sees this lens being quite flexible in application? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

@@alby3906 I've done astro, I prefer a Rokinnon 12mm ultrawide for that. It has worked extremely well. I was able to get 30 second shutter speed on it. For landscapes, it will really depends. I have the Tamron 17-70, I use it for portraits, pretty much all the time. My usual landscape lenses are prime lenses. The Rokinnon 12mm, Sony 20mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Don't see why can't use the 17-70mm for it though. That's been my favorite lens since I got it last August.

I shoot with the Sony a6600 my 4 lenses are, the Sony 16-55mm 2.8, the Sony 70-350, the Sigma 10-18, and the Sigma 56mm 1.8, no complaints, and certainly not looking to add any more.

As I am a student, I was able to get a discount plus an additional discount for bundling it with my camera, so the price was much more affordable. I was definitely interested in the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 too, but as I was in a position only just this once to get the Sony for such a great deal, I went with it. I also bought the Sony 70-350mm, based on your recommendation, for very good discount too. I am also very interested in the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 too, but just can't afford it yet.

MAcro is a tricky one, I have tried a few out and have settled on the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Full frame lens. Its good, but I dont use it much.

Raynox does some interesting and inexpensive macro conversion lenses. They can clip on or use the filter thread.

Thanks for sharing. I’m just missing a fast zoom in my kit. Got the Sony 10-18, Sony 18-105, sigma 16 and 56 and meike 35 f1.7. I leased the Sony 70-350 for the British F1 and I was impressed but can’t justify owning one as I don’t usually shoot tele. Need to decide between Sony 16-55 f2.8 and Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for a fast zoom. I’m leaning towards the Sony.
Yeah the sony is a excellent lens, only problem recommending it over the SIgma is the price difference. If they were equally priced I would take Sony. 🙂
@@TheCameraManReviews I check again about the Sony 16-55 and them minimum focus distance is not great. Sony needs to make an upgrade to this lens for better minimum focus distance, and that is where the Sigma is superior. It's a killer lens.
I agree with you on Sigma 30mm. I ditched it for 23mm. 23mm has been great so far except for heavy focus breathing
How about Stabilizer when using 3rd party lenses? Is it then IBIS only or OIS only?
The 18-50 Sigma is looking absolutely awesome on the A6700, looks like a perfect fit for a good, small universal use combo. I wish Canon would bring out a RF-S version with 2.8 aperture.
Great video. For me it would be the Tamron 17-70 and 70-350 G. No gap in focal lengths except at the wide end to which I would add the 11mm 1.8. To me that’s an exceptional 3 lens APSC kit.

I'll keep throwing the Tamron 18-300 into the ring. It will blow your mind, how often you'll find yourself using it and how much background blur it will give you, even though the aperture is so small. Colors and rendering are great.
All it needs is a bit of sharpening in the finish.
No OSS like the Sony though :(

I would choose fx Laowa 9mm 2.8, Sony 15mm 1.4 G, Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 (Sigma 23mm 1.4, Tamron 20mm 2.8), Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and Sigma 90mm 2.8, maybe Zeiss Batis APO-Sonnar 135mm 2.8.
If I will use only two lens, and de kit zoom is not so bad, than I think I will choose the 23mm Sigba F1,4...
Great recommendations! I use the 16mm and 50mm sigma lenses all the time. I have the Sony 18-135mm and I've been pretty disappointed with it, not near as sharp as the sigma lenses

Hi, the Tamron 17-70mm is also a great lens, it really is a toss up between that and the Sigma 18-50mm. Advantages of the Sigma are, lighter, smaller, more compact and cheaper. Advantages of the Tamron, extra 20mm reach and comes with built in stabilization (not a big deal if you have the a6700 has it has IBIS.) I personally would go with the sigma and put the money saved towards another lens. But both lenses are superb and you cant go wrong with either.

@@plgl76 Well that is a good question. I have no experience with the 18-300mm Tamron, but I would go with the Tamron 11-20mm 2.8.
But then again if I was to go for them, I would probably favor the 18-50mm sigma and the 70-350mm SOny. But I dont think you can really go wrong with either combo. I just have experience with the Sigma/SOny and it works extremely well. I get paid work, even when i am on vacation, with this combo.

Tameron 11-20 is what I pair with my Sigma 18-50 and I would recommend it to most people over the 16mm unless doing video at that focal length in low light (like a lot of us). Sony 70-350 is 100% the best consideration after that, I do agree. After that it's between the Sigma 16 and 56 depending on the kinds of things one shoots.

If you go with the Sigma 18-50 and the Sony 70-350, do you think that the range between 50 and 70 mm is relevant? versus let's say Tamron 17-70 and Sony 70-350, seem all range is covered, or you think the Sigma 18-50 is so much better than the Tamron 17-70, that the 50-70 mm so doesn't matter?
@@plgl76 I like the lightness of the 18-50, weight is high on my list next to image quality, hence hating the kit lens.
The 17-70 is a solid choice, but above 50 I'm looking at portrait mostly and the 56mm gives me both the focal length and the 1.4f that I adore the look of, I seldom feel I need to go longer in my portrait - so going up to 70 feels unnecessary.
Cost was less of a consideration here, but going with the Sigma lets you afford a nice prime for when you want to go big on bokeh vs. the Tameron.
At the end of the day, learning how you shoot and the focal lengths you need and which focal lengths do nicely with a good bokeh, for your kind of style - should help you choose your own zooms and primes.
I upgraded to the a6700 from the a6500. The Tamron 11-20, Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350 are my zoom lenses. I also have Sony 11mm, Sony 15mm, Sigma 23, 30 and 56 are my primes.
@@nathanealhuley1644 just ordered the 70-350, own the 56mm but am selling my 16mm as I don't do enough with it to justify keeping it. The few videos at home I do I'm happy with the Tameron.

Thoughts about the Tamron 18-300 all-in-one compared to the duo of Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350?
On one of the sites, a person wrote a review of the 6700 camera. And here’s what he wrote, and I quote: Severe focus hunting with photos and also freezes the camera with Sigma 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. Probably an issue needing a firmware update on Sigma's end, but until then I cannot use any of my lenses.
Did you have the same problems on a Sony 6700 camera with Sigma 16, 30 and 56 lenses? I already wanted to buy this camera with these lenses, but I saw this review.
I have not had that problem. I know Sony updated the firmware so It may have been resolved.

I have not tried that combo, but I think it would be awesome, it would equate to a 150mm-600mm which would be epic. It would punch in a lot but for the right scene/subject it would be amazing!
Definitely agree on the Sony 70-350mm. It is my breakfast lens when I sit w/A6700 on mini-tripod videoing birds thru double glazed window at 240fps SloMo, buTT I am such a klutz a 89yo w/dyslexic thumbs I need a beginner's video editor w/U-tube tutorials as good as yours for the A6700. How about this deal? A. 10$ (sorry I have only shillings, no #s) for a recommendation that works: just simple cut & splice, dub voice over, capture single frames & adjust exposure. If it only takes you 5' thats $120/hour. WhaddaYaSay? TIA

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 - an absolute little featherweight BEAST of a lens.
what’re your thoughts on pairing a sony fe 24mm f/1.4 gm and tamron 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 with the a6700?
emmm, I haven't tried the FE 24mm but I am sure it would work well, bare in mind it would be the equivalent to a 36mm on the Sony a6700 and it is pretty expensive. For your 2 suggested lenses and their prices, I would personally get the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 , Sony 70-350mm and then 2 other Sigma primes.
The Sony/Zeiss Sonnar 55mm f1.8 probably beats the Sigma 56 f1.4 as sharpest lens for E-mount. It is a full frame lens, but is very small and lightweight so is perfect for APS-C. I own both lenses and realistically the Sigma has a tiny advantage in that its lens hood stays on the lens better than the Sony hood stays on the 55, however, I use the 55 more because the images it produces are always very special.
I also recommend the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 because it is so much cheaper than the Sigma 23 and is better than the Sigma in one very important characteristic. The Sigma is probably better as a stills photography lens because it is a little sharper in the corners and has less aberrations, but it has a fatal flaw in video. The focus breathing is horrendous. Forget lovely focus pulls. For all its aberrations, the Viltrox has no focus breathing, is as sharp as the Sigma in the center where it counts, and is a lot more affordable, so I give the Sigma 23 a miss.

Just purchased the A6700 last night, was caught on the fence between that and the A7C, went with the gut instinct of longevity and decided the A6700 would hold its value for longer. Anyone else have both cameras and can give a succinct comparison between the two?

Good List, though I think the Sony 15mm f1.4G is a better choice than the Sigma 16mm f1.4. My kit includes Tamron 11-20 f2.8, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, Sony 70-350G, Sigma 56mm f1.4, Sigma 90mm f2.8 DG DN. Also have Samyang 75mm f1,8 and 35mm f1.8 and Sony 24mm f2.8G. Have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and agree it's good but there are better lenses now in that range. Haven't tried the Sigma 23mm f1.4, looks a bit bigger than I would want to use, that why I use the 24mm f2.8G. Yes I know it's 'slower' but it's tiny and super sharp and far more discreet.

@@TheCameraManReviews I think it's great honestly. It's small and coverage especially for video is great when using stabilization within the body and f2.8 is plenty good for most situations. When I travel, it always goes with me, along with the Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350 and then a faster lens options like the 56mm.

I own both sigma 18-50 and Tamron 17-70 for my a6700. Can conclude that video on the Tamron isn’t great handheld. The sigma’s a no brained if you’ve got ibis and want a compact setup

if you want a kit lens that has oss and is fully weather sealed, id recomend the tamron 17-70 2.8. its a couple hundred bucks more than the sigma 18-50.

Yeah I have tried this lens out and its pukka. My only problem with it, and this is just from my point of view, Its so wide that I never found myself using it that much.
If I ever need a wider shoot (which in my case is a rarity) I would do a pano and stitch 2-3 photos together with the sigma 16mm.

Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Its a bit of a beast in both size and weight, but the range means you dont change it very often. My kit is Tamron 11-20, 17-70, and the Sony 70-300 on my A6600. All fits nice in a sling bag. Looking to trade the FE 70-300 for the 70-350 APSC just due to the weight and size difference. They both perform almost identically.

@@plgl76 Honestly, I LOVE the 11-20. Takes sharper photo's than the 17-70, and the 17-70 is legendary. I am constantly amazed by the 11-20 and wish I use it more. I just dont have much need for the wide angle. The 11-20 fits so well on the A6600 body and just feels right. The 17-70 feels like a beast on that little body. I had to choose between the Sigma and Tamron and went with the Tamron just due to the added range. The Tamron does tend to fail a bit at 70MM F2.8 and I need to stop it down to 4.0 or I get bad contrast on bright objects. If you travel and want something that more agile, go Sigma 18-50 and Tamron 11-20.

I would say no, doesn't have the focal length.
It would be ok I guess with Basketball, but even then you would be better off with something around 200mm.

I would recommend it for quality of image, its just a little pricey and heavy IMO, but still a great lens.

Yeah, I wanted to offer value as well in my recommendations. But 100% agree, if you can afford the Sony then you got a superb lens!
At $1300 it’s a tough value proposition for APSC considering what you can get for the money. On the used market that would buy basically any of the G Master primes, and for a couple hundred more you can get a 70-200 2.8 GM. Personally I would never spend over $1000 for a dedicated APSC lens.

But for the price you can buy the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and get a cage, spare battery, and tripod with the savings. Does that not make more sense than the Tamron? Unless of course you can get the Tamron at a good price.
I have used the Tamron and enjoyed it, but I just think the Sigma offers better value.
