Forging a Bottom Swage for the Power Hammer

- In a return to simple blacksmithing projects, I am forging a bottom swage to be used on the power hammer. Anyone who is familiar with blacksmithing - from beginner blacksmith to experienced blacksmith - the work is about forging tools to forge other objects. In this case, my blacksmith forge, anvil and myself, will forge the bottom swage to then forge a flatter for the power hammer which you will see that in my next video.
I plan on using the flatter when forging axes which I hope to make a few videos about. In the meantime, forging this bottom swage will reveal some interesting mistakes I made which you may be able to learn from.
Inspired by the excellent videos from Torbjörn Åhman.

Hi Niels, vielen Dank für dieses schöne Video. Ich genieße sowohl den Inhalt als auch Dein Post-Processing. Wirklich toll gemacht.
Danke. Es freut mich, daß es gefällt.
Very nice! I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you very much!
The coolest thing about blacksmithing is making the tools you need.
Yep. Tools to make tools :-)
Well done sir.
Plz plz plz make one video a week! 😁
I wish as well. Alas, I only get a few hours on the weekend.
I have seen so many swages and other tools done in youtube by blacksmiths already but would you believe that they all looks very similar?
That's probably the result of being made to do similar things. 😉 Couldn't resist, sorry.
Help, i'm being swaged.

I live in riverside county. Where do you get your coal? I’m trying to find a supplier. Well done, by the way.
Unfortunately, I don't know where to get good coal at the moment. I only have a few bags left :-( Lazzari used to carry it.

Hallo,
wie Hoch ist denn dein Kohlenstoffgehalt? Sieht unglaublich hart aus, wenn sogar dein Powerhammer so lange braucht?!
0.4% aber: 4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel known for its toughness and its ability to attain high strengths in the heat-treated condition. It has very good fatigue resistance.
@@NielsProvos Uff, ok. Interesting but definitely to tough for me...I already have problems with forging my 0.8% but I'm afraid to forge with steel less then 0.8% because of the hardening process. Can it be successful with 0.6% or less?
Thangs for the answer by the way
Really depends on the steel. I like steel that I can easily heat-treat without requiring a programmed oven. 4340 seemed good.
