- In this video I will be making a balling up swage as part of a gate restoration I'm currently working through. The gate is a 1930's wrought iron gate and need some major work to make it fit for purposes.

I have seen Tim make balls this way. He is quite creative. Nice job with the video, it's all about the leaning process.
Very nice job on the swages Dan! This way now you can punch out as many of those ball screws as you can in short order and they should all be the same size. Well done sir! Well done!

What can you say. That was a learn experiance. Had seen ball swedges b4... But not made like that. Very interesting and whole lot handier than true ball impression.

Hey good day or evening, great job! Thanks for sharing that with us. Personally I hand forge the balls. Have a cheesy video of it on my channel. But it does take some time to make balls, as you know. May have to make a tool like yours. Especially If there is ever a need to crank out a large quantity of them for a large project. Please excuse some of the grammatical errors and such using the Siri microphone. Maybe my speech is impaired🤪! Thanks again for sharing and teaching everyone your awesome techniques. This gate project is great.
Because H13 is air hardening it should drill fine if you anneal it in the forge overnight. Normalizing in vermiculite is still too fast.

Intrigueing tooling, definitely solves the issue of splash too if you were to drop forge using a dye.
Fantastic tooling, Dan. I’m probably showing my level of “novice”, but I never would have expected a cross channel like that to create a ball so beautifully. Another lesson to tuck away for the future. Keep up the great work, and I will see about being able to support on Patreon.

Hi Dan the tooling great but why don't you use mild steel and case harden it a lot cheaper then using H13 use that for the tools you need .just a suggestion as we make lots of swages form mild steel good video dan

I just ordered an anvil from Holland Anvil. They make their anvils out of H13. My guess is it will last longer than I will. Lol
I bet the hs13 would be easier to drill if it was hot like 600-800 degrees Fahrenheit or 300-450 normal degrees haha .
Daniel, this isn't related to the video, but, it's your most recent video and your more likely to see this: Question: for pattern welded damascus, after seeing many failures on the show "forged in fire", and then seeing Joey Vanderseeg(sp?) Forge weld miniature anvils, (really shows what's going on with the metal during the welding) seems like it would be less likely for the welds to fail if the starting material is thick, say 16mm or more each layer, never forged past half before rewelded back to the original combined thickness, until the number of layers achieved. The metal seems like itwould retain it's heat better than a bunch of thin layers stacked at the start, is this correct? Or is it such a small difference it doesn't matter? Or is it those on the show are to pressed for time to get good welds on their damascus?
The issue is the make up of the show not the Smith. Fif doesn't give a realistic presentation of what is involved in blacksmithing or even knife making.
Also joey is using wrought iron most of the time and welds steel face on. This is a completely different to making Damascus. Different skills.
Would you know if cromoly steel good for making blacksmith tools 🤔
Daniel: I am repairing a steel fence at a Historic Site in Philadelphia, PA. I've completed making new hinges for the double gate and several other parts successfully. My last task is to straighten a number of upright 3/4" Square Stock, 6 ft Uprights, in the fence, that have been bent by vandals. They want me to straighten then on site and without Heating the steel. I will have to cold bend the uprights back to "Straight" where they stand. I'd send a photo, however; this media does not facilitate sending photos. I'm looking for recommendations on a process to straighten the uprights in place. It appears that the vandals placed an object between the uprights and applied pressure, bending and bowing the uprights. Any suggestions???? Best Wishes, Charlie
The issues you will find is holding every thing in place. Also most of the time bending the rials cold requires over bending them. Generally holding the rails in a fixed position and some well placed blows with a sledge should do it. Ratchet straps and a bottle jack go a long way as well. No quick fix just time and stress sadly.

Why wouldn't you just weld a ball bearing to a rod and use that for your positive to make the tool. TP
Cause I wouldn't have a nice transition that won't snap off whilst making the swage. I mean you could but experience tells me that would be a shit job.

I don't have easy access to vermiculite, though I do have quite a bit of perlite. Would perlite do just as good a job as vermiculite?
I have no idea but ill look into it give me a day or two

@@stuffbywoody5497 Well I'm just an old fart and do things as simply as I can.. I just push things into my ash bucket and let them cool over night. Now doesn't mean it will anneal first go if it is really thick steal but a second go round if needed usually does the trick. The whole idea is to tool slowly. Before vermiculite/perlite or all the other modern crap out there, the old blacksmiths used sand and or ash.
