  • HOW TO REPAIR ROOF SHINGLES - Replace Missing Aspahlt Roofing Shingles Step by Step Guide
    Part two starts at 9:26
Learn how to perform a DIY (Do It Yourself) roof repair when you have missing or broken shingles on your roof.
Step 1: Using a flat bar, separate the tabs of overlapping shignles 2 rows above and 1-2 shingles left and right, so you can completely remeove the damaged shingle.
Pry up the nails that hold down the damaged shingle.
    2) Remove the shigle and replace it with new color mataching shingle.
Most roof manufacturers have similar colors, so as long as your new shingle is the same size as old ones, you are in good shape.
Replace the damaged shingle with new shingle and nail it down with at least 4 galvanazed roofing nails. I recommend using 6 nails per shingle.
Next nail all overlapping shingels above on on the sides
Congrats - you are ALL SET!

Great video. Never in a million years would I have imagined the need to replace/repair my roof shingles. We recently had a wind storm which ripped shingles from my roof. After watching your video, I went to Home Depot to purchase supplies and successfully repaired a 3 foot by 3 foot area. The only thing that you should have mentioned was purchasing a harness. I have a wicked pitch on my roof which required my to be tethered to a rope/harness. Again, great job and you saved me potentially hundreds of dollars, if not thousands.

This is the first video I've viewed so far in my search for "How to repair roof shingles." It was extremely helpful. I'm going to attempt a repair myself and I'm no kind of handyman. At first I wondered why on earth you were ripping out perfectly good shingles around the missing one....LOL.....and I was a bit dismayed by all the fancy-looking tools you used....going to try a weed ripper that I just bought that looks mighty similar to your nail puller! And a good basic hammer with a claw on the end should work as well. I hope....

My roof had been damaged from a big branch that fell and clipped the edge of my roof. The wood trim was broken as well. I fixed it with the help of your video. The only difference was that two edge pieces were cut to different lengths. I cut the new shingles to the same lengths using the damaged ones as a template, and also as a template where to put the new nails. As for the trim I put epoxy glue on both of the broken ends, pulled them together and put screws to hold them in place. Then when it cured I used caulk to fill in the small gaps that the glue didn't fill. It's now undetectable that there was ever any damage. I would have called a roofer to fix it but I don't have much money at the moment.

My girlfriend's brother volunteered to do my roof (to repay a loan) and I was led to believe he knew what he was doing at least according to him. I live on what can be a very windy hill and he didn't nail the shingles properly, putting four nail near the top as opposed to where the lines are for the nails, nor did he pull the cellophane from the glue strips which would have allowed the shingles to be better held down. Consequently the first good wind we got sent shingles flying as well as folding over. Now I get to go up and try and put everything back where it belongs and do it right or pay someone to do it.

Dam you have crappy shingles. Only tiny line of tar underneath each piece nowonder they get lifted up with wind.
Kerabit or Icopal makes shingles that half area of underside is self sealing membrane (tar) which mean shingles stick to each other with help of sun and won't get ever blown away with wind nor water can pass between each layer.
Also you should use sealant which is made of tar.

Just replace the broken shingle by cutting the bad section instead of replacing the whole thing. That is way too much work and you risk damaging other shingles by doing it that way.I don't see other damage to the shingles around the area

Those nails are too high and not close enough to the end of shingle. Smh

All of you roofers are crooks. Never met an honest roofer who does proper work. I bet the roofs on your own houses are perfectly installed.
