Daniel Melgar well idk about that. I mean it’s a terrific song but at wits end is really great, but BAL edges it out imo. But every song on DOT is better then the rest of adtoe
No, I believe there's a huge problem with DT Fans, they're so biased and blinded with a special relationship with Portnoy (since the 6 inner degrees etc.), and because of that, they can't see how amazing M.Mangini is. He was the best fit for the team since day 1, and everyone kept crying like that baby who still proclaims his already-tainted peanut-butter toast that fell to dirt, but refuses to get a new, better blueberry jam spread on a whole wheat toast.
Distance over Time is a fantastic record. I loved The Astonishing as well, but this one new one is just as great in a different way. My favorite album is still Scenes from a Memory though.
John is such a classy guy! I saw them at the Paramount in Seattle on the Awake tour and they were having technical difficulties with the sound. James was visibly upset but John stayed cool and thanked everyone for being patient. Class act!
It is by far your best sounding album. I love all of your stuff, but this is my favorite albums since Images and Words. Barstool Warrior.... favorite. Every time I hear the guitar solo it makes me tear up. Beautiful. Pale Blue Dot.... a close second. See you in Detroit. Looking forward to it.
I thought it was exceptionally tasteful and well written. I was not a big fan of their previous album, but this one stood out as a no-nonsense rocking album.
I don’t hear it?? There are “moments” of heaviness for me.....the rest is too noisy and dense for my liking. I preferred the clarity of old....even on train of thought....
I would just love to hear heavier DT albums with different vocalist, like Tom S. Englund from Evergrey or Russell Allen of Symphony X. I love LaBrie on Images and Words up to Metropolis Pt2
@@Marifet124 it's ok. It just doesn't have the legs that some of their other material has. As always I am not absolute. However this new one feels more fresh
Shhhh he's a musician not a physicist :P You are correct though. Displacement has a completely different meaning as an album title too. It sounds more dark, "distance" implies progression yet "displacement" to me sounds more like being isolated.
@@thevomit5851 aight. Next album. Displacement over time. It should be a space prog album based on Carl Sagan pale blue dot again. But now the entire thing hehe.
@@thevomit5851 there. Jordan rudess gets extra freedom to nuts on keyboard. Same for the entire band. It should be like a totally different and new genre
To go full nerd, it is actually change of position over change in time; dx / dt. But since the number of notes in John leads goes to infinity while the amount of time goes towards zero, it's cool.
Best album since SDOIT. Very focused writing, strong melodies, tight and exceciveless compositions, remniscent of the old nineties DT magic. Cannot put it down! Highly recommended to any serious music fan.
I don't really care for any of the bands he mentioned. But I definitely would've mentioned Haken, Caligula's Horse, Soen, and Leprous. I think those are some of the best acts out there.
I’m gonna be really pedantic here, BUT JOHN WAS WRONG. He said distance/time was velocity but velocity is a vector quantity so the equation distance/time=speed not velocity :)
Imo it's by far there best sounding album. Older albums I found a little lack luster production-wise and felt they deserved better. Dramatic Turn Of Events comes to mind. Shame, great album otherwise
Good formula because a lot of DT cds are overblown sessions of self indulgent, gibberish that really doesn't appeal to all. This cd is full of good music, imagine that?
The album is not heavy enough to balance out the cheese overload that The Astonishing has been. DoT is still a very good album and Petrucci the best Metal guitar player/writer ever.
10 questions, 10 minutes, as precise as DT themselves 😁
no dislikes so far too :D
Editing?
It is a great album! But one day DT fans will recognize how phenomenal "A Dramatic Turn of Events is"!
Fido Llama i think it’s great but I think dot just edges it out
I agree DTOE is great imo
No song from the DoT album is better than Breaking all Illusions
Daniel Melgar I definitely agree but not to discredit DoT since Breaking all illusions is one of my favorite dt songs of all time
Daniel Melgar well idk about that. I mean it’s a terrific song but at wits end is really great, but BAL edges it out imo. But every song on DOT is better then the rest of adtoe
Mike Mangini is getting some much deserved praise for his work on Distance over Time.
now we know:)

Great album. No filler

Filler is not in the DT vocabulary
I would not say GREAT,but good one!

👌👌👌👊👊👊I agree
Scenes is the Daddy, yup.
My favourite is train of thought
The Astonishing a disaster
Scenes is their masterwork, much like zeppelin's "presence"!
sound prodution wise, I think DoT is the best in DT's history. That guitar tone is simply ideal.
Alex Alx Totally agree about guitar tone but that drum sound from Train of Thought is quite possibly the best ever recorded in my opinion...
@@thomasduffy7977 drumwise I like 6 degrees
Awake ... ;)

The decision to make a shorter album was the best decision possible. The new material sounds fresh and awesome.
Man, I'm really hoping that they make a European leg of the complete set tour with the DoT and Scenes from a Memory! This new album kicks ass!
It is by far your best sounding album. I love all of your stuff, but this is my favorite albums since Images and Words.
Barstool Warrior.... favorite. Every time I hear the guitar solo it makes me tear up. Beautiful.

John is such an awesome down the earth person, it would be cool to just talk music with him for hours
Johh you are the kindest guy and the best guitar player. New album is amazing!
Dreamtheater is a huge reason there are so many great players now.
I thought it was exceptionally tasteful and well written. I was not a big fan of their previous album, but this one stood out as a no-nonsense rocking album.
Yes!!! BTBAM got a mention. Don't love them as much as DT but love to hear them get credit
Jacob Josefsberg I was surprised that he didn’t mention Haken
Me too!!!!
Affinity is an absolute meisterwerk which takes the genre into fresh places....meanwhile DT haven’t really moved on. Still love ‘em though :o)
What does those letters mean?
I have to say this album got me in to DT. May be the heavy factor.
Nag
Get on to Train of Thought, it’s waaaaay heavier.
If that's what you dig about it, I HIGHLY recommend their album Train of Thought. You will SHIT. BRICKS.
I don’t hear it?? There are “moments” of heaviness for me.....the rest is too noisy and dense for my liking. I preferred the clarity of old....even on train of thought....
Seems like John got to choose all his favorite newer prog bands for the upcoming tour.
