Gaa !! Shuffles are just so dam tough for me .. They make we want to jump out a window .. .I need to seriously lock myself in the basement with my kit until I get it .. This video is the best place to start ! Thanks !!
Your right You Tube is full of video's explaining the half time shuffle, did we need another ?damn right we did, when it's as good as yours my friend, I wish it was about when I was learning that groove, great !!!
the internet may already have lots of videos on this, but if you haven't had the chance to share your take on it, the stage is all yours ! great lesson man!
ghost notes come naturally at times, but this beat along with "fool in the rain," and "Rosanna" just does not happen for me. never been able to get this feel, faking it is 1 thing, but to groove it is another thing. i am still learning after 35 years of drums.
i know that groove is kind of more electronic than your usual stuff but i would love to see you making a video about the song "sunrise in beijing" by Christian Scott. awsome groove.
Hey Austin, I have a request for a possible future episode of Study The Greats. There's a great DRUMMERWORLD video of Adam Nussbaum playing All Blues, and he does this incredible solo from 5:12 to 5:27 or so that you need to check out, as well as a few other amazing moments following it.
That was good, well worth doing. No one up until now had pointed out that the perdie shuffle was in 6 and all the others were in 4. That's how he can get so much out of one beat, it is rhythmically dense. Perhaps worth doing a vid on?
Hey man! Could you possibly look into covering Bernard's groove on Kulee Baba (Steely Dan outtake). Not because it's a famous groove (it's not), but because it's just incredibly interesting in general.
Great video mate, cool to se you trying a new setup too, I know it's pretty in at the moment to have a very flat setup but I love having my toms and cymbals angled towards me like that.
Austin, this video is excellent! Thanks for taking the time to put it on the net to share with the community. This is my first visit to your channel, but certainly won't be my last! I did have a quick question /observation about your transcription. It seems like there is a bit of an accent on the first note in each triplet, and I couldn't tell, but it looks like you are playing a little more with the shank on the first note, and the tip on the third of the triplet. Is this correct? Thanks for your response in advance and kindest regards.
I was watching John blackwells performance on australian drum festival. I remembered I once asked to do something on open handed playing since I admire your technique so much. As you point out in this video. The best purdie shuffle vid, i have seen btw Then there's JB. Just a thougt, A
Hey, love your videos, they are seriously amazing and very impressive! Can you do something by Garstka or Halpern? Maybe the groove in Tempting Time (you'll know which one), or the interlude from Erised? Also the outro Polymeter(polyrhythm?) from Para Mexer is so good. Honestly so many good things from these two. Just some suggestions.
Great lesson, Austin! And you played it damn well. I want to ask you: the height of your snare is because of traditional grip? Would you think put the snare as high as you have it with match grip?
For matched grip I would have it much lower. Traditional grip usually requires a higher position so the left hand can access rim shots without having to drop the left shoulder. Most guys who play traditional keep their snares up pretty high, around the same height as their bellybutton/belt line. It just makes traditional grip work better... Hope that helps!
Great Lesson, i think there's a song called "Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure" by Liquid Tension Experiment, it's basically a 3 minutes song that Tony and Mike created for fun, but Portnoy actually do a Half time shuffle that it blows my mind, it worths the check, thank you for give us all this beautiful lessons
Yea dude! I used to love Liquid Tension Experiment when I was younger. That was actually my first exposure to a halftime shuffle before I really knew what it was and I remember that track really having an impact on me. I had forgotten all about it so it's cool you brought that up haha.
Yea, I've been experimenting with raising my drums and cymbals higher than what I had been previously. I've found that when you put them higher and angle them down more aggressively, you can actually position them much closer to you and I feel like I don't have to reach as far to access all the parts of the kit. Also, with the cymbals, it makes them easier to strike with a swiping motion and I can get more of the stick onto the top surface of the cymbal, as opposed to just hitting straight into the edge. It feels better, sounds better, and increases the lifespan of the cymbals and your sticks that way. Hope that helps!
Austin Burcham ... I agree ... I have been playing with finding the right angle for toms and cymbals over 40 years. I have watched the trends by drummers to look cool over ergonomics. In the 1970's crazy angles were used for ride cymbals and toms. I think the key is finding the seat height, cymbal and tom angle that works for each drummer to not hurt themselves based on their size and height. The older you get the more your poor ergonomic setup and sitting habits affect your knees, back and even your hands.
@Enrinque I saw Bill Bruford do a drum clinic in Vancouver, Canada about 10 years ago. Amazing drummer, I think that's a great suggestion! What do you say Austin??
I did a piece on Bill's middle part of a song on King Crimson's 'BEAT' album. Search youtube for 'My transcription of 'The Howler' drums' , mostly in 15 time signature.
I think that only the single snare note should be used in starting out while the triplet is mastered first, (the two together) then followed by the kick, and finally the ghost notes.
thank you. I was doing this backwards....self taught, got the sound and groove down but backwards. Also was doing it with 8th notes therefore not getting that chukka sound. Thank's for breaking it down. By the way, I've been playing forever. No on line stuff when I started.....Many moons ago 1965
Hi RUclips comment section, new drummer here. First off love these videos dude they're so cool. Quick question about your setup, why are your high hats tilted towards you? Is that a preference or is that something that just happens as a result of playing?
On hi hat stands, there is a little knob under the bottom hat which allows you to change it's angle. This changes the way the top and bottom hats interact with each other while opening and closing. I have mine angled pretty extreme in this video which results in the hi hat angling down toward me a little bit, which I kind of like because I am sitting a little bit lower and putting the cymbals a little bit higher than what I had been. It's just a preference thing so it really just depends on how you want your hi hats to behave and how you have them set up in relation to your body. Hope that helps!
Don't worry about those ghost notes ... they're just rebouuund
Anthony Pilloy heeayah ha ha haaa
Lol absolutely classic
That snare sound is a killer. Love it. Thanks for the video.
Oh man I can watch Bernard groove for hours
Gaa !! Shuffles are just so dam tough for me .. They make we want to jump out a window .. .I need to seriously lock myself in the basement with my kit until I get it .. This video is the best place to start ! Thanks !!
Best instructional video breakdown of the shuffle on RUclips
Love the 6/8 shuffle man that is is funky!
Hey guys, hope you dig this one.... You can get the transcription over at www.abbdrums.com/p/bernardpurdie
Nicely explained. All you need to learn is a great teacher and that you are Austin. Thanks
That snare tone is godly
Austins or Purdies? I think Austins snare sounds fantastic. Purdies not so much.
fuzzylogiceire i meant Austin's, but his production quality is a lot newer and a lot better. I'm sure that Purdie's snare sounded great in person lol.
fuzzylogiceire Purdies sounds like a good punk snare
Your right You Tube is full of video's explaining the half time shuffle, did we need another ?damn right we did, when it's as good as yours my friend, I wish it was about when I was learning that groove, great !!!
Great breakdown, WAY better than other videos on Purdie shuffle.
Fantastic playing as usual Austin..and that's a gorgeous drum sound. 👍👌
i really liked seeing the various songs that incorporate this beat!
Purdie, Bonham and Porcaro are my groove/feel Holy Trinity.

Austin Burcham yes I think I finally understand. Awesome.

The song where he used the first example is "Babylon Sisters".
his snare sounds badass in that video
Superb video! I am a bassist trying to get some drum groove for my tracks. Your videos helps a lot man! Cheers!

Hey Austin, another great vid man!

(Nevermind, it's in the video! Bless you!!)
Good one!

Great video. Dumb question... is the upbeat the "let" of each triplet?
+Rhinsac yep!
Austin, can you do an episode on Rodney Holmes Cowbell groove? It would be awesome
What snare is it?
Hi RUclips comment section, new drummer here. First off love these videos dude they're so cool. Quick question about your setup, why are your high hats tilted towards you? Is that a preference or is that something that just happens as a result of playing?

Thanks! I had always wondered what that little knob was for/why people messed with it. Huge fan of the channel and your playing man, keep it up
