Great lesson Austin! :)
Thank you so much! That means a lot coming from you guys. I love everything you are doing for the drum community and have a ton of respect for what you guys have built 🙏
Kieth carlock
Outstanding!
Drumeo, can you bring Austin in as a guest instructor? That would be sick.
Wow. Can't decide if I'm more impressed with Keith Carlock, or the fact that you were able to transcribe this! :)
Is it you to transcribe? Not a software?
The paradiddlediddle was always one of my favorites. Easy to get up to speed, lots of practical applications. One of the 10 or so rudiments worth remembering.
"mmmMMMMMM" -Austin Burcham every video
xDDD
he's great better than me blue boy
Nasty!
Always waiting for it XD
I like how humble you are bro haha! The fact that your pulling off all the stuff that these great drummers are doing is insane. Its a talent in itself you can even break down half of these! Seriously though bro great lesson.
I agree with this. Doing it is one thing. Being able to break down what the greats are doing and then doing it yourself it next level. Very well done.
eathan are these negitive comments from these other guys for real? because if anyone takes the time to break down something i cant work out god i'm blessed at last im on my way to doing it ...thank you all who take the time and have the abilty to do this very articulate these very intrickeid rythem's (please excuse spellings Blue O brien dublin...we have one life it is not a rehearsel IT'S THE REAL THING friends
Excellent analysis, explanation AND demonstration. You are a superb teacher and drummer!!!!
This is one of the most clear, concise, and approachable breakdowns of a seemingly insane chop that I've ever seen. Kudos.
This man is gifted. He's a teacher.
He applies strict analysis to the great drummers. We comprehend more about their talent thanks to him.
Keith open the door for us.
Keith I wish you reach the hall of fame.
Your playing is ridiculously clean. Great great lesson
You have a gift for instruction. I truly enjoy how well you make these chops simple to play.
This is amazing! Love the concept and the transcription and breakdown...these are some seriously inspiring lessons presented in such a way as to make the seemingly impossible suddenly seem quite possible.
Austin, just subscribed to your channel and I must say, I’m impressed. You have a good, clear voice and you use no-nonsense language. I appreciate that. Keep up the good work and I’ll spread the word on your channel! 👍
Austin thanks so much for this channel. Two years ago I learned how to transcribe using Logic from you. It is one of the most valuable tools in my toolbox now. Subscribed!
Very cool breakdowns. Thank you Austin for giving time for us. :D
Great job breakin' it down Austin! Thanks for taking the time and sharing. Continued success! Happy drumming!!!:)
sending some gratitude and kudos from London UK pal. Thanks for breaking these things down for us mortals!
Great job as always! One of Keith's signature fills. Awesome!
This is genuinely one of my favorite fills, I cannot wait to try and learn to play thanks to this, Nice one man!
Hello from the UK pal. Great stuff. Your vid's are one of the best i've seen with regard to lessons, explanation and execution of fills and grooves. They are very helpful! I know how much time and effort must go into them. And just wanted to let you know it's appreciated! Great technic on the drums and with the audio software dude.
Austin you are flippin' amazing. To break down what others are doing in steps and re-teach is a great skill in itself. I've admired Kieth Carlock for awhile and often refer to the Vic Firth clip to say to my drummer friends, "Yeah, but have you seen this?" I wrote to Kieth awhile back explaining that I had no Idea what he was doing but I was blown away, etc. He was very cool to get back to me with a simple 'thanks!'.
That is some crazy stuff! I love how when broken down it becomes so clear.... and you realize how "Attainable" it is... nice lesson, Austin :)
Thank you Austin. You have a great knack for explaining complex concepts so normal people can understand.
This guy is insane, such tasteful grooves. One of my favorite drummers.
Brother you are such a inspiration to the drumming community thank you so much for all your visit Brother you are such a inspiration to the drumming community thank you so much for all your vids
I was already a big fan of the para diddle diddle and used it in several groove and improv situation but you have really given a great approach through studying Keith Car Lot
Thanks again for your videos and your enthusiasm for the drums!!!!
Yup. I'm really digging your analysis, as well as the transcription. The playing certainly aint shabby either :) This one's a keeper, Austin - thanks
I'd like to add that what makes Keith Carlock so great at using this rudiment in his playing, apart from his improvisational genius and phrasing, are his tone, articulation and dynamics. This is evident in the very first segment of this video. Keith is almost always striking the same part of the drum every time, and his doubles are dead even with no pulsation from left hand to right. This makes his rolls silky smooth. He also brings out his accents in prominent fashion so that the emphasis of his phrases are essentially the accents and not the double stroke rolls. The coolest thing by far, in my opinion, is how Keith is able to build and release tension in his rolls with dynamics and well-timed cymbal crashes.
Austin, very cool and inspiring videos) Love your clean playing and your clean sound!
awesome video as usual! great work Austin!!
This was just some INCREDIBLE transcribing and analyzing, thanks a lot!
Dope as always!
Thanks!

This is an example of great instruction. Thank you very much.
Very well-done! Solid rudimental foundation Austin and a clear breakdown of Carlock's go-to fill/groove. Of course, if we could only play it with the same ferocity as Carlock does! Cheers!
you totally naild it Austin! very well played and also explained!
That fill is insane. I can’t stop watching it. Great video. Nice job breaking it down, but, man, it’s still insane.
Once again thanks for breaking it down for us Austin.
Great video. I got to see him years ago in the front row at Bentleys Drum Shop. Definitely someone worth studying. Best doubles I've ever seen and great traditional grip. Lots of power. He's a stick of dynamite !
Keith really works his drums! Brilliant. Really well presented explanation too.
Austin, your videos are sick! In 40 years studying I can't remember enjoying learning from my favorites so much. By the way, your chops are the shit. Keep the videos coming. I'll pay..
I love all your videos Austin, they are very helpful! Would be a great idea if u make a drum video tutorial on how to transcribe the drums (tips or advices)by ear!
how could someone give you a thumbs down? You are a great drummer and teacher. Thank you!
Brilliant vid Austin, thanks very much! I don't know how you managed to transcribe this ... well done my friend!!
Awsome. Really informative. Just goes to show that all mayor players have their own strengths. Great lesson. Thanks for sharing your great analysis of patterns with all off us. You've gained a subscriber
Fantastic. I have seen Carlock do this so many times and always wondered what the heck was going on....thanks for posting!
Awesome video, lesson and playing man. Thank you very much, you've just opened up a whole new world for me. And a pandora's box. Cheers, Stew
Thanks for breaking this one down Austin. It's amazing how the doubles smooth out at 115bpm. Well played.
You are a fantastic musician Austin. Rock On. That was fantastic playing by you man.
Sick!!! The video I’ve been looking for for a long time
incredible listener and teacher you are Austin!
Count this as comment #351 tipping my hat in great respect to you, man! This was an awesome breakdown of one of the best drummers to be born in the last 50 years. Thanks so much for all you do, Austin!
Lovely playing and lovely kit. 👌🥁🥢
"Pretty bad ass, right?" Ha ha, you're not wrong.
SO SO nice to see a fellow traditional grip player!!
excellent lessons. Gonna sub!
Really nice teaching and playing! Thanks for this!
Perfectly explained. Really appreciate these. Keep em coming
Nice break down. I saw him doing this with Steely Dan and couldnt figure out what he was doing. I just knew it was one of the sickest licks I had ever seen. Thanks for breaking it down.
Just discovererd this channel, awesome stuff. Going to watch this whole series for sure :)
thank you very much Austin! Just found this site and it is awesome. Badass...
You are so mechanical but fluid at the same time.... so cool. Well done !
Outstanding video. A great tutorial and really well explained. Pretty damned good drumming, too.
I can’t believe I didn’t see this channel before ! Great stuff !
Met him at the 55 bar a few years ago. He was playing with James Genus on bass and Wayne Krantz on guitar (I hope I spelled the name right!)
Carlock told me that he is actively trying to channel a straight up funky feeling in what he does. I think this is part of why his fills and overall technique are so strong. He plays a lot without getting in the way of the other players. Very hard to do. He is an amazing drummer. Good teaching video btw.
YES! Been wanting to learn this type fill for a while. Thank you man
I was waiting for someone to do this! Great lesson. Thx
Awesome and definitely inspiring! You got some great chops 👌
So funny because I was just showing someone that Vic Firth video. I got to stand right by his high hat at the 55 bar in NYC several years ago with Wayne Krantz and James Genus. It was raw fusion in every sense of that word. Afterwards I spoke to him. He said that he's always trying to channel that THUMP in what he does. It's like the doubles (diddles) are all connected to that thing too. I will never forget that night because the whole group was KILLING it.
Thanks for posting this video. I thought it was so great, I showed it to my 16-year-old son (jazz drummer) and he liked it just as much!
+Andy Olson That's awesome! Glad you both got something out of it :)
Awesome Lesson... Ive combined your approach to Chris Coleman's use of linear triplets with this lesson to create a fun lick!
That was stunning. Brilliant job.
I've been playing drums a long time, and I know a good lesson when I see it. Giving this away for free is a public service.
Wowww man.. I can't believe you did this one. Thank you soo much!
Great job! Saw Keith live a couple of times.
This guy's awesome, I know Keith and saw him play a few days ago, had a nice conv with him but just figured I'd never be able to figure what the hell he's doing, but here I am playing along on my office deck. Thank you!!
Hey Austin, great job on Keith Carlock diddles, he's a great player for sure! Nice job bro. David Curtis Drumming
Dude. Amazing lesson, and playing. Thank you :)
Good quality videos and set up, keep it up.
Loving the traditional grip and "finger control" aspect in your playing. Thank you Bill Pingree.
Good drummers borrow... great drummers steal! I love your channel Austin. Keep it up...
You certainly like to take on big challenges and this was a nice one and my favourite so far
i love your vids man. sooo good.. keep them coming.
Incredible transcription…thanks so much…👌🤩🤩
This has to be the most bad ass of all the fills in the series. Ferocious comes to mind.
Fantastic as always.
thank you. the breakdown makes sense. never could have dissected it myself.
Your channel is great, keep it up!!
Great Explanation and demos!
Thanks!
You are awesome...to be able to copy the greats is very impressive!
