Austin you are one of the best drum teacher and (may I say?) analyst that I know of, you definitely know your stuff....all your videos and insights are of the highest quality. Great humour too! You are a legend. Big thankyou for all your hard work....
+Austin Burcham It sounds like you're playing the triplet groupings straight, In JoJo's performance, I'm almost certain the groupings are swung. That was the only thing that really stood out, this is a crazy lick haha
Dude, you’re a fantastic player. Not only are you able to figure out very difficult phrases (I am not) but you can play them perfectly (I can not). Just awesome.
Found your channel just a couple of weeks ago and just looove it! Never seen anyone pick out so many cool licks the way you do, it's easy to learn and your also a kind of funny guy:). You'll definently have my support and I look forward to see what comes next!
I loved this break down... I've played tons of 3's, 6's' and 4's in a triplet setting but I've never thought of the 5+4 in a triplet setting before. That's going opens some ideas for me now! Thanks again for putting in some major effort into these lessons for us humble viewers!
I ve just started transcribing stuff like Tal Bergman with Rock candy funk party....and I am litterally blown away by the quality of your work. Thank you so much for sharing
Austin I really enjoy your "Study the greats" lessons. Ive played drums on and off 45 years. I appreciate the way you break the Fills and grooves down. i mostly play to headphones and music, I am trying to go back to the rudiments, no point in playing if i cant be a good player.
Austin I left a reply on one of your Jo Jo Mayer videos. Fantastic work. Maybe this is at your website under each transcription but could you just mention the BPM the artist plays each fill or groove? I have an app that gets close to the BPM but an exact number would be great. At the tempos of some of these just 3 or 4 BPM can make or break me. I like to practice at 5 BPM faster than the artist and then bring it back. KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC work please. Maybe Yes Gates of Delirium one day?
Hi Austin. Fantastic channel! I'm a newbie here and I'm blown away by what you're doing....... You're playing - Your vision for the channel and the overall production. Keep it up bro and thanks for doing what your doing!
Austin, thank you so much for these awesome videos. I personally enjoy them & cant get enough of these awesome break downs. This intro in particular had me dying laughing too!!!!!! Keep up the good work 👍 I’m a huge fan
I love these videos they're so good just to open up your mind to stuff and everytime you put a new video out I get so much inspiration and find new ways to create cool chops. Keep it coming if you can. I love your work 👍🏼👌🏼😊
Very cool. I am working on the Vinnie Flam 7's and the Jojo triplets (possibly for months ... years? .. to come). Thank you for your work and inspiration!
A very nice analysis and some great playing by yourself, sir! I got in to Jojo Mayer via an Austrian trio called Depart, are you familiar with them? He does some truly astonishing things with them!
So you are correct now in what he does, BUT he does use the Blushda a lot. His top influences does include Tony Williams, and he has said at a clinic in 2011 (Sofia, which is a video you can find here on RUclips) that it's a lick that he "can't not do." It's a significant part of his vocabulary, and probably a pretty cool lick to have in any vocabulary.
+Michael Scott Last thing I would add, which for the purpose of this video probably doesn't really affect anything, but the tune that this is from is "Glitter," and while it can be played in 3/4 time (and when Jojo solos during the tune, he clearly is feeling 3/4 time), it's a tune that is felt in 6/8. All the evidence you need for that is the tune, which you can buy on Nerve's bandcamp site. Again, it's not worth changing the video over, because this is probably easier to notate in 3/4 than in 6/8, and because Jojo changes the feel between 3/4 and 6/8 so often when soloing over this tune, it's probably more correct this way.
Yea, the blushda is pretty universal now among all the prominent fusion drummers so I will eventually find a better example of it and make an episode out of it. And, for the transcription, I kept bouncing back and forth between using 3/4 and 6/8 but the 3/4 just comes out easier to read so I just stuck with that. Thanks for the comments!
+Austin Burcham I admit I'm still working on the Blushda myself, PLUS, Jojo does actually tend to smooth the Blushda out sometimes when he plays. Also, in reference to the previous video, you'd notate a "smoothed" blushda as a 4:3 tuplet. Four 16ths in the place of three. I remember seeing that notation before in a transcription of Matt Greiner's drum part in "Composure," and if you were to play this lick in the "incorrect" way from the last video, it would be a 4:3. And you're welcome dude! Hey, drummers gotta talk to each other, you know?
Hi Austin, I just subbed to your channel and I like your way of teaching. Have you ever done a tutorial in setting up Logic to chart drum set notation? How did you get Logic to map out perfectly that audio file of Jo Jo's playing? Or did you do it manually? I've tried mapping Logic and got close, but some of the kit components, such as an open hi-hat, are not showing up in the notation. I will check out your videos if you already did a tutorial. If not, would you consider doing one? Thanks
Hi, I've already seen most of your videos, and congrats for ur job ! I wondered how you managed to have a real drums score with garage band ... ! if you have time to help me about that it would be cool !
Hi Austin another fine transcription tutorial thanks a lot. The backing track you use sounds the same as on Jojo's, did you remake it or is it available somewhere?
Love these videos bro. When you do the transcription on logic, on your next video. Could you zoom in on the written part of it, like you did in the Chris Coleman video? Thanks
+Jobias Jackson I'll try to remember to. When I make these videos I forgot to do that sometimes. I do link the transcriptions in the description box so if you do have trouble seeing it in the video, just open it up from that link and you can see it clearly.
Hey man! Good job! Well done!! How did you do that transcript on logic? Does it have something to write music on it? I don't know much about the subject!! But anyways really good job well done!!
nice dissection..i tend to be many sides as well.. some days. im going deep into modal..other times. its jazz. zoukous...no thinking..i think ones musicality language changes and tolerance..
Hi Austin Burcham, I'm shandon from the philippines I already used a logic pro x app for the first time, and I used this for my drum transcription purposes. I would like to ask on how to notate a 32nd note in logic pro app? I tried to figure it out but it's only appears a 16th note triplet. I hope you can help me to solve this problem, thank you and God bless :)
Great lessons....just seems at the end of section time 4:22 you're ending with a LL rather than written RL....If I'm wrong sorry....just checking? thx joe
+joe drummer the way I play it is how it is transcribed out... if you're referring to the very last 2 lefts I play, that last left is actually the 1 of the next bar that leads into the ending section.
+Joel Azia You don't need any plugins, you just have to configure Logic to output drum notation. I made a video on how to do that a while ago if you want to check that out.
Austin you are one of the best drum teacher and (may I say?) analyst that I know of, you definitely know your stuff....all your videos and insights are of the highest quality. Great humour too! You are a legend. Big thankyou for all your hard work....
Thanks man, I appreciate that :-)
Can't agree more, great work done here Austin! :)
Damn I love these Study the Greats videos. Thank you :D

Austin, can't believe it took me 5 years to find this. Thanks. You are really good at this RUclips thing.
Dude, you’re a fantastic player. Not only are you able to figure out very difficult phrases (I am not) but you can play them perfectly (I can not). Just awesome.

+SesiomOllitsac Ah, y otra cosa ¿conoces los bateristas "Benny Greb" y "Chris Dave"? Pues ellos también son fuente de inspiración.
Eso, hasta luego.

Another well done vid! Gotta say, one of my fave things you do is the exclamation after the killer subject matter: "MMM!" & this one: "f__k!" Haha!!
Amazing!
Excellent job Austin

Hi Austin Burcham, I'm shandon from the philippines I already used a logic pro x app for the first time, and I used this for my drum transcription purposes. I would like to ask on how to notate a 32nd note in logic pro app? I tried to figure it out but it's only appears a 16th note triplet. I hope you can help me to solve this problem, thank you and God bless :)
Wow Great Austin thanks
Excuse me, what kind of flam is it? "rL or lR"?
Awesome breakdown! Btw do you play with the signature sticks of the respective drummer for each lesson?

Austin: Congrats on the Vic Firth endorsement. Are your sticks based on the 2B model?
