    I mean this with all due respect, for some reason, I feel the audience have no idea how utterly masterful that display of drumming was. The height Keith gets on his sticks (especially with his left hand), and yet he barely touches the small tom-tom (with his left hand) on the downstroke is insane, the fact that he doesn't lose a stick, to me is mind blowing. Couple that with the fact that his grip is so light, I struggle to take it all in and I've watched this video many times. Oh, and I forgot, the solo itself was tasteful to the extreme, story telling at its best.

    • @ricksuch
      @ricksuch Год назад +5

      I’m not quite sure how you can assume that the audience didn’t fully appreciate Keith’s talents by watching this short clip. I was the one who shot this video and had a front row seat. The crowd was mesmerized by Keith and was totally into it. The Jazz Kitchen is a small jazz club and only seats a few hundred people and it was standing room only for these shows. Without too much explanation, the audience totally dug his performance.

    One battle I often have with my own playing is the tightness I hold my stick. I'm a rock/fusion player - not jazz. But I see guys like he and Steve Smith with the lightest touches. I'm 54, still gig and try and emulate the holdings and what I think is the lightness and haven't gotten it yet. Guys like Keith are on another planet. It's a privilege to watch and try and learn from them.

    • @Nagroddy
      @Nagroddy 7 месяцев назад

      @Stevedrums741 You really could change the way you hold your sticks and the way you actually think of the movement of your sticks and the way you play...even at 54. You would have to go through a year or two of practicing at least an hour a day that would require you to become comfortable with a sense of giving up some level of control for a year or so and even be comfortable with dropping your sticks sometimes as your fingers very gradually link up with and REWIRE your brain to hold the sticks with the minimum pressure to keep the sticks in your grasp while allowing full rebound. It is a combo of both mentally & physically switching over your brain to a philosophy of not having control at first in order to be free of tension. It is not giving up ALL tension but giving up unnecessary tension. As you make this very slow transition over a year or two you gain total control like Carlock has.

    Keith Carlock is truly a special musician. Skill and fluency are at very high levels, incredible. But what strikes me most about such a skilled musician are the taste and timbre and stylistic relevance: usually those who have that kind of dexterity tend to get lost in selfishness. He, on the other hand, is always in focus, always goes deep, digs every single note with the intensity that usually distinguishes those who are good but not as good as he is on the instrument. I don't know if he ever loses a beat, he sure never loses good taste. And in the meantime he charges on a herd of bison.

      I agree!
      Most drummers' bass drums sounds can be heard when the beater hits the head, but after that the sound gets stuck inside the bass drum and doesn't come out.
      In other words, you can hear the pulse, but not the resonance.
      With Keith's Bass Drum, the sound reverberate far beyond where the instrument is placed.
      I love the sound of not only his Bass Drum, but also his snare and tom-toms.

Such a neat sounding idea and implementation of Carriying a fill groove all over the kit and extending on it that long, and then sort of does the same thing more later on like 2:04 - 2:14 or so… crazy skill this guy has.
