11:00 omggg you guys don't know how much i needed this today, i'm doing a literature degree (french one tho) and it's been three years of struggling with this feeling of not knowing enough, not having read enough, not being enough, etc. and today it really makes me wonder if i'll be able to go further on with this field of study even though it really passionates me,, sooo what i'm saying is thank you, a lot, for talking about this
not me adding the song of achilles on to my TBR list just so I can take myself back to ready the percy jackson series as a child as it was CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
10:00 Rebecca by Daphne De Maurier is a great classic to start with. Very easy to comprehend writing, interesting plot, iconic characters. This book is one of my faves, just trust me!♥️
this was the best collab i've ever seen on youtube, in any topic. there was such a great friend chemistry and I laughed and smiled the whole time and was very inspired!
this is a hill I will die on: most people who love murakami have just not read enough japanese lit. so much of what he's praised for (magical realism, his style of prose, etc) are present in A LOT of japanese fiction, but he gets a lot of the english speakers' support bc of good marketing, name recognition, and lack of exposure to wider jpn fiction
This is my first introduction to this channel, since I am a huge Noelle fan! Jack I love how much you smile when you talk - your happiness is contagious! I find myself smiling at my computer screen watching this video.
I love thisss! Though I feel like I already ‘perform’ the books in my mind as I’m reading them so I don’t really enjoy audiobooks, like at all...*hides in shame*
i LOVED this part of the conversation because i'd never thought of audiobooks as a performance before! i agree, i think i sort of perform them in my head, but i'm increasingly enjoying audiobooks the more i read because it feels a bit more relaxing and like my inner performer can have a lil' day off hahaha
The booktube collab I didn’t know I needed. Also, I’m not sure if Fahrenheit 451 is considered a classic, but it definitely should be. Top notch science- fiction/ dystopian
Great video! Enjoyed it very much! Jack, loved your answer about Truman Capote, one of my favorite writers. Totally agree about In Cold Blood, such a fascinating book!
So enjoyed listening to the two of you chat. I took my family on holiday to Amsterdam on the basis of my daughter's love of The Fault In Our Stars - and had a fantastic time. We went to visit Anne Frank's house and had a hot chocolate in the hotel the characters stayed in (the film). We also visited the bench which was amazing (it was put back) which was covered in amazing quotes left by visitors. Definitely recommended!
i’m reading song of achilles right now and it’s so beautiful that i don’t want to finish it because i don’t want it to be over and i know it’s going to wreck me 😭
This collab is EVERYTHING Also as a music grad I totally relate to the discussion on the cannon because music has a similar stigma, some of the best, most brilliant pieces of music aren't in that cannon of what is considered important music
I'm starting a lit and lang course at uni next year and I'm terrified everyone will have read more than me. Glad to know i'm not the only one! I adore both of you :)
James Franco’s audible rendition of ‘Slaughterhouse Five’ is my favourite audiobook ever. Franco convinced me that I loved Vonnegut, so I tried to read another Vonnegut and realised that it was just Franco adding to much to the quality of V’s writing and delivering such a beautiful performance. Love it
Insane, I listen to just TWO "Booktuber"s and here they are together. Wonderful content from both of you, please do this more often. Both of you are so much fun, relaxed and knowledgeable, a joy to see your videos.
this was such an amazing collab! love Noelle and love your videos Jack! Can't wait to watch more videos like this from you. p.s your voice and the way you talk and express yourself are worth a podcast
I have been following Jack since my first year of Uni (and I am on my third and last year) and I recently discovered Noelle, who immediately became one my fave book tubers alongside Jack. The fact that you two know each others and you are doing a collaborative makes me scream!! So happy, love you both 🥺💖 (sorry for my bad English)
I loved listening to you. This made me feel like it's about time I start reading and stop thinking that I need to read. I love reading but I never really gave myself enough time to do so. You guys are an inspiration truly. I'm starting at uni this April imso excited... Reading is definitely going to be my meditation.
Such a fun collab, with so many good book recommendations from both of you! ☺️ I'd love to hear Jack's South Asian/ Indian lit recommendations, not often I hear anyone mention those! My boyfriend, who's from India, has a few favs too 😊
Omg!!! I just started following your channel yesterday and I really liked it and I can't believe it, you and Noelle❤️❤️❤️ I love her soo much. You and her, yes❤️, beautiful friendship!
I'm just gonna share the first few classics I've read for people who don't know where to start: Pride and prejudice - Jane Austen Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll Through the Looking-glass - Lewis Carroll The picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde Frankenstein - Mary Shelley Some more tips: - find a copy that is annotated and has an introduction - find a book that you want to read because it's interesting, not because someone says you need to read it - start with modern classics or children's classics because the language is easier to understand (especially if english isn't your first language) - adaptations and even memes can help you to understand the plot - take your time and don't be too harsh on yourself if you get confused or don't understand everything. I still haven't read any Shakespeare because the language is a bid too hard to understand, but I'm gonna get there eventually and so do you (if you want to)
Very enjoyable chinwag, but guys, Dickens didn't create some of the most iconic characters in literature to be rudely snubbed like that, omg. For those interested in classics, definitely give Dickens a try! A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, and Pickwick Papers are all great places to start. He's sarcastic and fun, and his long books were intended to be in multiple volumes like a series, so don't be intimidated. :)
It’s like bringing your two friendship groups together at a birthday party but it works ✨BEAUTIFULLY ✨
