    This week's celebrity book club victim is: Dua Lipa!!! Dua has been recommending a bunch of books on her Instagram story, from Stephen King's Misery to Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life... so of course I decided to read all of them.

    I think A Little Life is written really well, but I'm honestly always a little surprised at how it's so many people's favourite book. It's one of my favourite books because the exploration of trauma and how positive relationships can help us cope/overcome it is just masterful. For me, it has always been a book about friendship and how it can be the light that guids us out of the darkest times.
      It IS extremely sad (although "sad" doesn't even cover the despair and helplessness I felt reading it) and there are literally trigger warnings for everything you can possibly think of in this book (maybe except for animal cruelty) but I say it's worth the read if you think you can take it.

      I think that the amount of suffering experienced by the characters in this book is unrealistic tbh and it feels very manipulative. It covers very sensitive topics, but it doesn't do them justice, it does it mainly for shock value. I mean how many times can one person be raped by different people in their life statistically? In this book it happens way too often, not to mention other troubles.

    I read The Underground Railroad in a lit class and we talked a lot about how the monotony of the writing was the POINT of the book, because we often talk about these topics in a way that's so dramatic and outrageous when in reality, slavery was happening everywhere in the USA. It's not a big special story, it is a version of a story that was happening to every enslaved person in America. I do agree that other books about the topic that do enhance and tell the stories in strong detail are important and can be more entertaining to read. But I think it's also cool/important to read about it in a way that really enhances (for me, anyway) the idea that it wasn't a special or singular story, it was a common one.

    • @jack_edwards
      @jack_edwards  2 года назад +70

      I would agree if it was fact-based, but (for me) the author imagining what it would be like if the underground railroad was an actual locomotive takes this from an authentic slave narrative to speculative fiction. it was the lack of depth in the characters that made me not enjoy this book!

      @@rayaanne1719 hmmmm that's a really good question. I haven't read a lot of bulgarian books translated in english, because bulgarian literature rarely gets translated in english tbh (except for the really popular books). With that in mind, I don't think that the difference would be that big. You do need some historical context for "under the yoke" and "the iron candlestick" tho. Bulgaria was under the ottoman rule for about 5 centuries and they (and the greeks, but that's another subject for another day) really tried to remove any trace of our culture. Till a certain point, church ceremonies were held in greek, not bulgarian. You have these rich people ( I have no idea how they called them in the english translation but the чорбаджии in bulgarian) that often sided with the turks aka betrayed the nation. For additional context - bulgaria gets the desired independent church in 1870, and then in 1878 bulgaria gets freed from the ottoman rule with the help of russia (I am not just saying this for fun, there is a lot of foreshadowing for this event in the iron candlestick). I think that's it.
      In those novels, the Bulgarian language is a bit difficult to read, even for me, but they probably simplified it a lot for the translations.

      @@rayaanne1719 if you are interested in reading these books, I encourage you to quickly google the bulgarian national revival and the fight for independence, simply because those books kinda expect you to know what is happening? Trust me, a quick 15 minute research will make your life much easier and reading the books would be much more enjoyable. + you get to learn some new things about a smaller, but really fucking old, country !
