Thank you for being so open about this subject. I’ll probably get a jot of pushback for saying this: my experience and observations from it is that mental health is more widely acceptable to give to younger generations. This is rightfully so and something long overdue. I noticed the unconscious bias that was happening towards some older generations that were seeking and admitting to working on their mental health. I asked someone about why they treated the older generation different on this and, 1) they didn’t even realize it was being seen as such, and 2) the first thought they said they had was, “well, their older…they’ve had all this time to figure this out already.”

I don't want Galactus or Doctor Doom to be the big bad of the first MCU Fantastic Four movie. To be effective those are villains who both need multimovie setups just like they did for Thanos.
Agreed. I want their first villain to be The Mad Thinker. He's practically made for post-credit foreshadowing scenes. All he has to do is make a vague prediction about the big-bad and POOF. Instant hype.
The best idea is that she is the villain. Keep it simple. Marvel needs to get back to basics and tone down and remember they should play T-ball before they swing for the fences.
Kinda like Thanos sent in his minions, even Loki. He can still be the big bad of this saga, but they need to learn their lesson with how they messed up with Kang. Not even including his firing/recast needed.
Imagine going with a version of the Silver Surfer who only appeared in one comic over Norman Radd who has been the Surfer for 60 years. I am utterly mind boggled at their decision making these days.

Totally agree, the real Silver Silver is a male character Norrin Radd for over 60 years. This new female Surfer is in an alternate universe, which several other channels say the same thing, due to futuristic looking buildings in the 60s setting which don't make sense in our prime universe.

@@spitflamez exactly. Somehow they haven’t realized that there’s a reason why these characters were so popular in the first place. Comic accuracy is the way to go, nine times out of ten.
Exactly had that thought and the fact that it bummed in GOG might be the reason they are trying to stay of that storyline. Also I think they are trying to up the stakes with this version of silver surfer as she would have a compelling reason/story/motivation to back her actions of being Galactus herald/scout: Trying to save planet.
I think they are missing an opprotunity here; The Silver Surfer already had a film, They should use Nova - Frankie Raye.
She is the female human torch, was a herald of Galactus after the Silver Surfer. She is also the step daughter of Phineas Horton, The creator of the Original Human Torch, and the Vision was created from a copy of the Original Human Torch. (Cameo in Captain America the First Avenger). She also joined the Fantastic 4 for a while, and she was in a relationship with Johnny Storm.
Completely agree they have better characters that people like way more than the ones they've been using recently, and that's a big reason I haven't liked Marvel recently.

Norrin Radd, always the Silver Surfer. Not Shalla-Bal being SS, which came out pretty recent, 2000s. My take on this has nothing to do with the actor, or Shalla-Bal, but Silver Surfer is going to always be Norrin Radd. This is not justice for my favorite dude.

It's cool having stories that can be in and/or out of 616. But a problem with them is that the stakes of the story disappear. Wrath of Kahn sorted it with a new timeline created and the stakes are real again. Scalzi just said the alternative possibilities don't exist. That works too. An infinite number of What Ifs? It doesn't thrill me.
100%. Everything has to come back to the central universe. Otherwise the stakes are meaningless and we stop caring.
Which is why I've always Said that the Marvel should have expanded it's focus beyond 616. Get us invested in other universes. Obviously there is a reason this particular reality is important. Its got a greater role to play in the grander arc they are building
Everything introduced before secret wars is all gone this is about creating rhe new 616 with with All of disneys properties. They want a new iron man a new wolverine and intro us to everything new.
It also creates a massive disconnect between those characters and the universe we've been following and these random versions from alternate universes will become cemented in pop culture and the minds of general audiences before we ever get a proper adaptation.

@@BaithNa exactly. I don't understand this obsession with fix x men characters. Like I get it it's nostalgic and some of the actors have really embodied their characters. But I thought it was time to move on with the MCU nd give us a proper origin of the X men.
Here’s my problem… Comics swap around a character’s gender/race etc. Sometimes it works. The MCU is already dangerously close to offending its entire fan base. Not sticking closer to the source material now is scary. They’ve lost the credit to swap around anything. They need to go back to formula… cue the Green Goblin. Copy the comics and deviate naturally.
Besides… it’s Marvel. You could throw a rock and hit a great female character.
not really, there is no Marvel fan base, these sorts of films are only successful if they attract a general audience, and most will just tune out until there's a good film again. Nothing this big is sustained "by the fans"

The argument could be made because of their close morals, backstory, etc. that Captain Carter is just a British gender swapped Captain America.

Personally I typically don’t care about Gender swaps. Ratcatcher in TSS was dope. But I am disappointed that we won’t be seeing Norrin Radd as SS in this film.

You can flip that argument around and bring up the 90s when every Marvel character had their own cartoon series. Silver Surfer in particular was in both the FF series and his own solo series. It was close to comic accuracy as you can get.
Then Marvel went close to bankruptcy and had to sell their characters to a bunch of different movie studios to survive...

We’ve heard Kevin Feige say that he wants more than half of the marvel heroes of the MCU to be female. So it’s not a stretch to say there is an agenda at play. It’s all about the “diversity initiative” But that’s besides the point, majority of fans of the Silver Surfer became, fans of the character because of who he is in the comics. Not the obscure version. You wouldn’t have to explain that there’s a female iteration of the silver surfer if it were popular and let’s please stop labeling fan concerns as some kind of woman hating campaign. Although there are extremists in every group. I feel like people tend to focus on those toxic people. I love this actress in Ozark , but regardless of range, I don’t want to see this Silver Surfer. And I am pretty sure if you ask majority of the fan base they will tell you the same thing. That doesn’t take away from the actors talents at all.

I think it's important to remember the F4 movie is confirmed to take place in an alternate universe. It's very possible that we'll still get to see the traditional Silver Surfer - Norrin Radd - when he makes an appearance in the MCUs 616 universe.
The agenda at play is that everyone has to be a straight mostly white male. That's been the Hollywood agenda since it's inception.

I don't think anyone hated the castings. The only one which was questioned was Ledger. Due to acting chops and personality which he proved wrong. But yes as you say. They didn't hinge on iconic characteristics of the character. But capability of the person playing them

Norrin Radd Surfer is literally 8th most popular Marvel character of all time. There's thousands of comics based on him. Millions of fan art. The comparison is shocking.
If they cast Spider-Man as Jessica Drew instead of Tom Holland as Peter Parker or Sharon Carter instead of Main MCU Steve Rogers you'd maybe have an argument

It sounds like the Brie Larsen Mar-Vell casting. “She’s got a lot of range!” She needs Rogue to siphon her powers and put her in a coma, while the real Captain Marvel shows up to save the day. There are lots of female heroes in the Marvel universe. SS is not one of them. And using Galactus as their first antagonist sets the bar ridiculously high for any future film. Give me the Mole Man any day.

With how good Marvel once was (and still can be) with putting stuff together, they could easily run through a origin with opening credits and a good score playing
I’m just annoyed that, at the moment, we aren’t getting a good Norrin Silver Surfer first. Kinda weird introducing an alternate version of a character when that alternate exists because of the existence of the original. It’d be like getting a Nightwing movie without ever seeing him as Robin first.
I think it has to do with the fact that the Rise of the Silver Surfer, even for what it was, had the best version of Him that we could ever have seen on screen. And they announced that Galactus and Doctor Doom are going to be in this and also confirming it's in an alternate universe, it makes more sense that we're getting a different Silver Surfer because like Spider-Man homecoming or PS4 Spider-Man game, we're jumping into their Universe after shit has gone down.

@@whitey00112 That's also why I'm not the least bit upset about this decision. This would be at least the 6th attempt to adapt the Fantastic Four since the 90s. The 90s actually had Norrin not only in the FF cartoon series, but his own cartoon series too.
However all those attempts at the Fanstic Four and Silver Surfer has been a bust. You know it says something when the most successful attempt at the FF and Silver Surfer was the 2000s movies with Jessica Alba and Chris Evans.
After that many attempts, maybe it's a sign there's fundamental issues with the characters they're adapting and they should try something new.

The movie takes place in an alternate universe in the '60s. Whatever issue the fantastic four find out about in regards to their silver surfer is information they will carry over when they come to the main 616 timeline. That's where everyone will get their naked silver man harolding towards Earth.
This is where I’m leaning too. It also makes a lot of sense.
I don’t know we’ll just have to see because at the same time this can cheap in and take away value from the original silver surfer story. No one‘s gonna be interested because we’ve already seen it done before on screen… it just cheapens the character in my opinion if they ever decided to do the original silver surfer later

I’m not really sure that I agree with that. Given that Marvel hasn’t been too keen on doing a character that’s had a major role already multiple times and the vast number of other characters that are in the FF’s world, I don’t really see them doing the Silver Surfer again if they’re doing that story now. There’s the very real possibility that Galactus and his heralds don’t even exist in the MCU’s 616

If there wasn't a Multiverse and incursion problem happening definitely a time traveling story would work, but I have a feeling that maybe all those stories happen to this universe and we'll just get an explanation of it and not showing it like Uncle Ben in the MCU.

So you all three sat there and gave a very basic description of the silver surfer from the comics and just replaced uninhabited planets with universes on an incursion and try to make it sound original because that’s the whole thing that the silver surfer does bargain with Galactic so he doesn’t eat his planet and then he goes out and seeks uninhabited planets for Galactus to eat and the silver surfer does become a villain until he finds earth and Frankie Ray I don’t know why you guys just sit there and try to make it sound like what you were saying was an original thought

FF being from another universe opens the door for Blue Marvel to also enter from an additional universe. The original human torch can even be from the FF’s WW2 era. They can’t do it forever, but leading into incursions and secret wars, it’s perfect timing.
Personally, I'm not worried about who plays the Silver Surfer. I was out as soon as Pascal was cast as Reed Richards.....

I just wanna sit back and watch what the MCU does with the Fantastic Four. This was the first cartoon superhero series that I watched as a kid in the 70s. This along with “the super friends“ got me into the superhero genre as a kid and it led over into my adult life as I am 52 years old now and couldn’t be a bigger fan of comic book movies, along with Star Wars. Most of the times I don’t want to see the movies go exactly like the comic books dead because I already know what’s gonna happen. I want to be pleasantly surprised. Casting a females silver surfer is no big deal to me , I don’t care. Heck we are in the “Multiverse” phase and with infinite realities anything can happen. I think that’s where some people only believe in the dogma of how things should be instead of how things could be.
I honestly don't see the big deal, this movie is seems to likely be in another universe. It's the Multiverse Saga and we have yet to get a film focused in an entire new universe with no limitations of the 616 continuity. Let’s be honest, we're going to get multiple versions of the Silver Surfer. Hopefully this will help Marvel make this movie stand on it's own like Iron Man.
The X-Men should do a giant-sized X-Men rescue mission from Krakoa. Newer characters the Movie audience has never or rarely seen before rescue older characters we've seen before. Set up using the Island as base and conflict with Genosha.
Guys, you need to get some perspective back. You're talking about how they don't need to do an origin of the fantastic four because we all know who they are. The last fantastic four movie was almost 10 years ago and nobody saw it. The "we" who know who they are are comic book nerds and we're not enough to support the MCU. Just look back at the incredible hulk movie. How much do we now wish we had a real legitimate MCU origin of the hulk? They didn't do that because 'everybody knew who the hulk was' and what is origin was. I completely disagree on this one. Yes, do a fantastic four origin. Do it in the multiverse, in another universe but we should not assume that everybody just knows who they are unless we only want comic nerds to see these movies, in which case the MCU will collapse.

I for one am ok with a female version of the Surfer as long as she plays Shah-ball (not Norin Rad) and that she dies at the end of the movie while trying to save the Fantastic Four by sending them to the 616 MCU so they can warn the other earths/universes about the coming of Galactus. What about that for a plot twist.

This is a movie that Marvel really should have played it safe with. Alexander Skarsgard would have been my choice for Norran Radd Silver Surfer, easy. Johnn Hamm would be Dr Doom.
They know what kind of outrage reaction this would have gotten by doing this casting. I would have just played it very safe and stayed the traditional route with the Fantastic Four.

Honestly, this might end up like the Marvels, not enough people who support this movie will see it to make it a success, the majority of the fans has seemingly wrote this off because it's not what they want. They are going about things all wrong. If you want more women and racial characters or whatever then write them with their own new fresh story that’s unique to them that we can become invested in. Something i just noticed as you said multiverse and show Reed using the time timeform, the visual on the platform looks like a 2d view of the multiverse.
The timing is terrible in terms of optics but i'm okay with this. Marvel normally casts really well, the writing is my worry. Maybe Sister Surfer can kill off the Super Skrull sized hole they left after Secret Invasion?
That South Park was comedy gold and 100% accurate. FF is literally doing what they said putting a chick in it and chances are norrin radd will be her best friend and she’ll have a gf instead so making her gay and lame. That's silly you guys would say it's the removing of an agenda. Fans aren't mad because of this. They are mad because it ignores the MOST NOTORIOUS VERSION of the character. Sure marvel has countless versions and alternative versions of many characters but as far as fan service they want to see noran rad. Likening it to some sort of male patriarchy agenda is silly. That's like if they made a super dog movie, called it super dog. But it was a cat. It's a turn off to people hungry for an adaptation of the most popular original source material. However weve done been introduced to so many miss the mark versions in live action portrayals I wouldn't be surprised if they casted Ben grims "the thing" as geodude from pokemon.

The only thing they seem to have gotten right was setting it in the 1960s because otherwise the Fantastic Four themselves are charmless as hell. I think a good sign that someone is attempting to actually make a good Fantastic Four movie would be if it were an animated feature and not trying to shove TV actors into rubber suits or have Joel from Last of Us whip his wiggly arms around Ruth from Ozark. Even if the casting were perfect (and it's never been), the whole thing is way too ridiculous to be live action.

I don't have any opinions on the casting itself, I just wish they would work on a storyline that hasn't been tried before. There's already a F4: Silversurfer movie. Whether you think it's a good or bad adaptation of the conceit... err.. I mean concept, there are many more characters that can be adapted that haven't yet made it to the big screen.

Since the Fantastic Four will be set in the 1960’s, I think it will go one of two ways:
1. They are in the 1960’s of the “616” (ugh…it really isn’t really the 616) MCU. Whatever plot points happen, I feel like it’s related to the Negative Zone. Either they have their Cosmic Ray origin or they have a Phantom Zone origin like Josh Trank’s FF movie (hope they don’t go back to that well). One way or another, adventures in the Negative Zone leaves them stranded and they reemerge in the present day (maybe time flows differently there in the MCU?).
2. They exist in a parallel universe adjacent to the 616 that is basically the equivalent of the 1960’s. An incursion between their universe and the 616 brings them into the main MCU. I bet Doom caused the dimensional shenanigans that triggered the incursion (but which universe is Doom from?).
I’ve only grabbed my armrests twice in the theatre. Once was seeing Charlie cox as Matt Murdock in no way home and the other was John krasinski as Reed Richards and I was so happy and then they just took it away like that

Also, stop PRETENDING that they are not using Silver Surfer because he is fairly well known. Their is no defense for in turn using the least popular version of the character for a movie that is supposed to reboot and prop up The Fantastic Four...it literally goes AGAINST the entire flipping idea.

So why not actually tell a series of movies making him a great villian by building character, motive and story world. Instead of rushing him into one movie and continuing the Marvel villian problem.
That's what made Thanos such a good villian, he had an entire story arc over multiple movies. Follow the same formula.They have only one time to get this right. Of course FF has other villians so why not introduce them first and slow build the Silver Surfer story arc over multiple movies. So the final battle will be an epic, cosmic level event and not forced. Again same formula as the Avengers and infinity saga. Once they use Silver Surfer and Galactus that's it'll, all they have left is Dr Doom and the rest off the FF villians are not even on the same level.

Yes, Jack Kirby created the herald character in FF 48, all on his own, to the surprise of Stan Lee. But there was no name or persona - he was just this automaton like presence. It was Stan Lee who gave him the name and the tragic personality which continued throughout his appearances in future FF stories. It carried on to the Silver Surfer solo books by Lee and John Buscema, where Stan kind of doubled down on the tragedy. It was NOT a change in the character due to Jack leaving Marvel. It was what Stan always had in mind as the character evolved.

Why does anyone think that the universe at the end of the marvels is 838? They distinctly referenced prof X in that scene and he is dead in 838 by wandas hand.
Xavier in the comics has survived similar psychic attacks that "killed" him. And Binary could be the result of something they did to heal Captain Marvel. She was originally experimented on by the Brood and "something" happened and she got bonus powers. It's a stretch for both characters to be sure. Additionally Krakoan Xmen can literally resurrect themselves so who's to say they don't have that in the oddly Distopian Utopia of 838..

In theory this choice is so tone deaf and dumb it could bankrupt Disney by casting a female SilverSurfer. It could be the last straw. They are putting a ton of money and hope into F4 as Feige has been planning this for a decade and just the choice of casting a female SS is going to cause so much a backlash it just went from a potential billion dollar movie to maybe 250 million.

Shalla-Bal’s Silver Surfer isn't a new character, and it makes sense to have an alternate Earth Silver Surfer for a story set outside the main timeline of the MCU!
Imagine if The Hulk wasn’t in the MCU and you finally hear he’s coming to the MCU and you get all pumped and then find out it’s not Banner Hulk tho it’s Amadeus Cho Hulk. Wouldn’t you feel like, wtf, why? Specifically if they did that move after years of their fans saying no we want the main characters not these obscure D list superhero’s.

Marvel could have partially introduced the alternate universe in a WTW sort of way in Infinity Wars.
By having Doom teleport in a Thanos Fight scene, take instruments reading and teleportating away.
The gender swap thing is crazy because what If it was the other way around? They never make a female character a male. How would people think if they announced a Jason Grey instead of Jean Grey for the xmen or a male Electra in daredevil. Not saying that any of this bothers me, just something to think about. I will not judge a performance untill I see it.

I think they should introduce her in What If. Get a feel for how she would do with the current crowd. I think that worked well for Captain Carter. She was just an amazing character and I adored Hayley playing her. Having her work with her male counterpart was also written well. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I was hoping to see Nova rather than the chick surfer. Nova looks better and she is pretty cool overall as a Herald. Norrin could show up to help the FF4 battle her early on in the movie in order to establish an alliance w the FF4 and Surfer. Make it a 2 part movie and you can have both a great female surfer-type AND the old school Norrin we all love. Can't hurt to give fan service to both sides of the fanverse
ok, this is prolly gonna be a long one as a very long time F4 fan. There are a few things with this upcoming movie that have me very worried that once again were gonna get a fantastic flop. First is the casting of Reed, I think Marvel is making a huge mistake casting Pedro Pascal as Reed and not going with the superior choice of Glenn Howerton, who not only looks way more like Reed throughout the comics but has a way closer personality in things like IASIP that are more in line with the egotistical aloofness of the smartest man on earth. Second, if theyre just going to reboot things after secret wars it seems like a huge waste blowing their load with galactus right out the gate instead of building up his arrival similar to what Fantastic Four Life Story did, just on a smaller timeline. Third, if it wasnt for the Kang problem they could have had a very easy way to introduce them as being starting in the 60s and ended up trapped back in the ancient Egypt and up against a RamaTut variant of Kang. Personally i think they're wasting a perfect opportunity to really set up a major player in either version of secret wars by not making the antagonist of the first film the origin story of Owen Reece the Molecule Man. I would even settle for Moleman for a first villain over going with Galactus. Its been almost 20 years and i still have an extremely bad taste in my mouth from the last time they attempted to bring Galactus to the screen. Also since you guys brought up grindhouse style films, a perfect candidate for that would be the X-Terminators, which would even give them a chance to link Blade and the Vampire Nation into the MCU and would give a reason to bring back X23 along with Jubilee, Dazzler and BoomBoom. ok, rant over
Well, it being Shallah-Bal does not mean she is not a created being that is a clean slate, necessarily. There are a bunch of variants of Shallah-Bal (named that) in the comics across all the multiverse already, so it could be a completely new variant of her story for the movies. On that note, though, I hope they make her more like the Starglow version, or the twin surfers and maybe Norrin is a human that she meets during the movie and their roles are essentially swapped here.
People just need to wait to see the end result, before judging who gets casted or who doesn’t.
There are MANY ways that including her would help the plot along nicely. Keep in mind we do not have many classic FF stories that are not world ending so adding some longterm love affair and acceptance has already been done with Starlord and Gamora but would be great to see happen across incurred universes.
