Passed my CAT D yesterday and was convinced I had failed due to two incidents. My examiner explained that as both incidents were not caused by me it didn’t go against me. I got 1 minor for 1 incident as I could have minimised it and for the other got nothing.
Just shows why you need to carry on to the best of your ability no matter what has happened.

Privately used NDC for my training, passed comfortably. On the buses now with a reputable company in London but I still had to show them I'm up to their standards, which I was thankfully to NDC. You will of course learn as you progress your own career.

Preparation is the best way to help you pass your test.
But also trying to stay calm is a big help, if you have anxiety issues and your on meds, REMEMBER to take your meds on the day(unlike me who forgot and I failed my test as I couldn’t think straight!!)
Also it’s a massive help if the examiner can put you at ease, when they are quiet, old school and stones faced that puts the fear of hell in you.
It does matter who you get to conduct your test despite what some might say.

I passed 7 years ago went for new job at arriva and failed assessment maybe it was nerves, my main mistakes were forgetting to look over shoulders. He claimed I not check right mirror but I did but not turn my head to the right. I also went past a van who just pulled in and then started reversing in. I went past him close. I clearly might have become lazy in doing the shoulder checks. I also straddles the lane on a round about, Maybe I might benefit with a bit extra training perhaps. Even experienced drivers make mistakes.

    • @NationalDrivingCentre

This is very true if everyone drove their vehicles the way they drove on the driving test and Obeid the highway code at all times, then there would never be an incident or accident. As we all know, practice does not make perfect practice makes permanent and taking the time to top up the rules and making sure it's all been done correctly is absolutely the right thing to do. An airline pilot has to be assessed and re-trained every six months so why would a bus driver be any different? Thank you so much for your comment and your input.👍👍

Hi NDC. Just wanted to say thanks for your videos, I've recently passed my PCV ( 2 weeks ago) and CPC (on Tuesday this week) tests and along with the great training I got, your videos really helped also. I'm in Northern Ireland and did my test through the streets in Belfast, in a Scania Irizar coach.
I would like to put these two questions, which was asked at an interview I had a few months ago to see if theres any definite answer.
1 You are late to your next bus stop. A lady is waiting and when aboard she complains that she has now missed her hospital appointment. What do you do? What would you say to her? How would you handle the situation?
2 Your doing a school run and a fight breaks out on your bus. What do you do? What do you say? What can you do? How do handle the situation?
Thanks again for all the advice in your videos

Totally agree. Same happened to me. Twice. I didn't watch a door close for long enough was why I failed my 1st test. It was picky and uncalled for. I did look at that door. Not in the industry now, paid back my training bond put it down as a bad experience. I now work in a job no weekends or evenings. Good money. There is a high fail rate which I didn't look at before I chose to do coach drivers career. There are guys at National Express that on their 3rd fail will be let go. That is if they don't quit with the stress of it all beforehand. The industry is short of drivers and it shouldn't be like this. Its not my loss its the industry loss.

Have my re-test in the coming week with a London bus company beginning with A and ending in A lol; it's a retest as the first test with a different examiner was a fail. He asked me 2 safety questions which weren't in the DSA safety question bank (C1 - C28 i think it is), so I didn't know the answers! Thinking about that I then failed my reverse as I couldn't concentrate and hit a cone... which i had never done in practice. Hopefully this time with a different examiner I'll pass but your videos have helped me from starting my theory, to honing my reverse skills. Thanks again.

Passed my PCV test first time with 4 minors. Best advice to give Is always remember to check your tail swing. Turning left = quick glance in the right mirror, turning right = quick glance in the left mirror.
Remember it’s just another drive, no different to being out with your instructor and classmates.
My test had the added pressure of an official dvsa official examining my examiner (in house dvsa approved examiner).

People do fail, better to make mistakes during learning as failure will carry you forward and give you more experience ready for next run. Remember, failure is a strength not a weakness as people who pass first time skip that strength and then make mistakes so learn on road harder way than learners. People who fail once, are stronger and don't make mistakes also have early knowledge or better advantagous start over other drivers passed first time. Often times we call drivers pass first time over confident, this feeling can happen when drivers pass first time rather than continue to follow highway code as normal and what they learned on test. Bottomline is, we all gotta fail sometime and find ways to improve on regardless of what we failed on. 💯

I am now told by NX that they will book me another retest for 3rd time but if I fail again they will get rid of me. My question is. Is this normal for bus companies to get rid of trainees if they can’t pass there practical?

So sorry to hear about this Benjamin. Yes it is not unusual for companies to put you through an allocated number of tests. The best thing to do is have a word with your instructor make sure your instructor feels that you are fully ready to take the third test if there is any doubt make sure they don't put you in for it. There's no point going in for a test that you are not ready to pass. If you have any problems or questions please give me a call kind regards Paul.👍👍

I’m thinking of doing some sort of driver related job as I’ve been stuck in retail for quite some time and would like a change up of job and I think I can offer something but reading up on stuff regarding to more so the category c (class 2) than bus drivers I see a lot of people complaining which puts me off a bit…..
I was also wondering If I were to do the pcv course I’d probably do it off my own back,
Do you find more people finance the overall cost or pay out of their own pocket or their employer funds for it?

    • @NationalDrivingCentre

Hi Stephen, thank you so much for your comment. The best advice I can give you is to brush up on the rules of the highway code. This is where you're going to find the basics for roundabout, techniques, indications and bits and pieces like that.
As we all know, practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. So having a brush up on the general rules would help. Remember if you've been driving for a long time you're gonna have a lot of experience this will help when it comes to judgement and planning.
But we often see the experience driver, indicating right when they wish to go straight on when on a roundabout, or failing to indicate to leave the roundabout, because they have diluted the rules over the years they've been driving. I hope this helps Stephen, if you've got any questions, please give us a call.👍👍👍

So sorry to hear that Darren. When we have a student with nerves there are a couple of routes to try. A mock test with a different instructor can help sometimes, it needs to be a different instructor otherwise the student feels to close to the one they have had all week. You can ask your instructor to come with you on your test, this can have pros and cons but could help. Try commentating it would take your mind of the nerves and fucus on the job. This is such a good tip. Give it a go, it really does work. We hope this can help. Good luck.

  • @dd007x
    @dd007x 2 года назад

I passed my theory all ok. The 3 sections if you fail one you have to resit. Was over the moon to pass. Failed my drivers practical test twice and resigned in disgust over a lack of support. My employer were going to fire me. I had to pay back £2,200 walked away as I felt I deserve better. My theory pass last for 2 years up until Oct 2023 if I want to retake me practical. I won't be. Expensive lesson to learn. I joined a long established coach company who sent me to a training school. The bus I learnt on was a piece of crap awful brakes, steering. An old, old dented dog. Glad I moved on. I deserve better. Totally.

So sorry to hear about the way you were treated. This is why it's so important for companies to do the homework when it comes to training schools. It was an awful experience. Only 57% on average pass the practical test I later read. I should have self funded my licence and then chosen my employer as there are so many bus coach driver vacancies nationwide. The industry is very short of PCV cat D licence holders. I intend to stay out of it as it was such a disappointing and upsetting experience. Really knocked me. I love driving. Customers. People etc. My instructor was a miserable type and mean by nature. I was cleaning buses and doing shadowing for those weeks. I failed the 2nd test as I curbed the rear of the bus lightly. Instant fail return to testing station. I left shortly after this. The 1st fail I felt was petty, picky and mean. I did look at that door.
