I was there, way up front!! Tripped the hell out with the intro to "In Vein". I thought, "What the hell's he playing on?" Fell in love with the song via live performance. So damn sick!
Such an awesome small venue. Damn, don't know how I missed this. Caught you years earlier opening for Face to Face @ Bottom of the Hill so know the small show feels!
I remember being so mad I missed this show bc I was still in high school and didn’t have easy access getting into the city for this at the time. One of the few trio shows I’ve missed in the bay area in the last 20 years (ooof I’m old)
I'm still only on This Could Be Love, and the intro was perfect, the crowd is so into it, and awesome, and you guys sound great. I will finish this. It's, I think around the same time I saw you guys in Pittsburgh at a smaller place, I for the life of me can't remember. Diesel? Or atleast close to the place.
What a setlist. Goodbye forever, nose over tail. Did you ever have an input or preference for tunes that you wrote with the band over earlier stuff on setlists, or did you just play whatever irrelevant
@stephenmaginnis731 I loved playing all of the songs (with maybe two or three exceptions!) but I hated making set lists, as does Matt - it usually falls on Dan to build a set list then Matt or I will move things around or replace one or two questionable numbers. I think that's why I enjoyed shows where we played entire albums, it eliminated that factor, for better or worse.
Looks like you switched to left-handed quite a bit on this show, maybe moreso than other live videos I've seen from this era. Cool to see with the older setlist. Do you notice any particular tendencies when playing lefty?
@ToneResearch Shortly after joining the band, I started switching hands (playing open-handed) to better play certain parts of the older songs - both of my predecessors were lefties with right-handed set ups (for the most part) - so I tend to do it more for their stuff, but not always - it comes and goes depending on the show or maybe my mood? - I also found that playing open-handed allows for a bit more motion when playing around in-between beats, what some might call "flair" or "jackassery".
This was the peak of my trio fandom i was 19 my knees still worked and all my friends were still alive
Thanks for this channel. Hail Derek.
The fucking effortless openhanded playing is just bonkers. Like, every drummer watching this is just losing their minds with every video upload.
thanks for this channel derek! great stuff!
Man... still kicking myself for finding you guys so late in the game...

Fantastic set!!! Thanks for yet another gem from the archive
Thank you for sharing these videos Derek! GRAZIE MILLE! How are you? ❤

It would’ve been so cool to see this intimate of a show with yall. And of course the drumming is stellar as always!
I was at this show with my friend Henry!
How the hell did we get here?! This is such a cool recording! Thank you Derek!
Was this the same set of underplay shows that included Alex's Bar in Long Beach?
Thanks!

Was this the year you guys did that matinee show at SLO brew at like 4pm with broadway calls?
Do you have any footage from NJ shows?
